The study of very short-period contact binaries provides an important laboratory in which the most important and problematic astrophysical processes of stellar evolution take place. Short-period contact systems, such as CC Com, are particularly important for binary evolution. Close binary systems, especially those with multiple system members, have significant period variations, angular momentum loss mechanisms predominance, and pre-merger stellar evolution, making them valuable astrophysical laboratories. In this study, observations of CC Com, previously reported as a binary system, and new observations from the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) and the space-based telescope TESS have revealed that there is a third object with a period of about eight years and a fourth object with a period of about a century orbiting the binary system. From simultaneous analysis of all available light curves and radial velocities, the sensitive orbital and physical parameters of the system components are derived. The orbital parameters of the components are P$_\mathrm{A}=0.2206868 \pm 0.0000002$ days, P$_\mathrm{B}=7.9\pm0.1$ yr, P$_\mathrm{C}=98\pm5$ yr, $e_3$ = 0.06, $e_4$ = 0.44 and the physical parameters as M$_\mathrm{A1}=0.712\pm0.009$ M$_{\odot}$, M$_\mathrm{ A2}=0.372\pm0.005$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{B;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.074$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{C;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.18$ M$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A1}=0.693\pm0.006$ R$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A2}=0.514\pm0.005$ R$_{\odot}$, L$_\mathrm{A1}$ = 0.103 L$_\odot$, L$_\mathrm{A2}$ = 0.081 L$_\odot$. Finally, the evolutionary status of the multiple system CC Com and its component stars is discussed.

HD34445 is a system that consists of a star and six planets. In some previous work, we investigated the dynamical stability of the system by means of numerical simulations. Here, we explore the system further by carrying out additional numerical experiments. A total of 100000 simulations confirm previous findings of the stability status of the system at the 1σ and 99% c.i. level. We find that only 2.7% of the systems with parameters varied within 1σ from the mean were unstable, while that percentage rose to about 28% for systems with parameter values taken within the 99% c.i. These preliminary results are presented and discussed herein.

We present 63 new multi-site radial velocity (RV) measurements of the K1III giant HD 76920, which was recently reported to host the most eccentric planet known to orbit an evolved star. We focused our observational efforts on the time around the predicted periastron passage and achieved near-continuous phase coverage of the corresponding RV peak. By combining our RV measurements from four different instruments with previously published ones, we confirm the highly eccentric nature of the system and find an even higher eccentricity of $e=0.8782 \pm 0.0025$ , an orbital period of $415.891^{+0.043}_{-0.039}\,\textrm{d}$ , and a minimum mass of $3.13^{+0.41}_{-0.43}\,\textrm{M}_{\textrm{J}}$ for the planet. The uncertainties in the orbital elements are greatly reduced, especially for the period and eccentricity. We also performed a detailed spectroscopic analysis to derive atmospheric stellar parameters, and thus the fundamental stellar parameters ( $M_*, R_*, L_*$ ), taking into account the parallax from Gaia DR2, and independently determined the stellar mass and radius using asteroseismology. Intriguingly, at periastron, the planet comes to within 2.4 stellar radii of its host star’s surface. However, we find that the planet is not currently experiencing any significant orbital decay and will not be engulfed by the stellar envelope for at least another 50–80 Myr. Finally, while we calculate a relatively high transit probability of 16%, we did not detect a transit in the TESS photometry.

The detection of Earth-size exoplanets is a technological and data analysis challenge. Future progress in Earth-mass exoplanet detection is expected from the development of extreme precision radial velocity measurements. Increasing radial velocity precision requires developing a new physics-based data analysis methodology to discriminate planetary signals from host-star-related effects, taking stellar variability and instrumental uncertainties into account. In this work, we investigate and quantify stellar disturbances of the planet-hosting solar-type star HD121504 (G2V spectral type) from 3D radiative modeling obtained with the StellarBox code. The model has been used for determining statistical properties of the turbulent plasma and obtaining synthetic spectroscopic observations for several Fe I lines at different locations on the stellar disk to mimic high-resolution spectroscopic observations.

Detection of Earth-mass planets with the radial velocity method requires a precision of about 10cm/s to identify a signal caused by such a planet. At the same time, noise originating in the photospheric and subphotospheric layers of the parent star is of the order of meters per second. Understanding the physical nature of the photospheric noise (so-called stellar jitter) and characterizing it are critical for developing techniques to filter out these unwanted signals. We take advantage of current computational and technological capabilities to create 3D realistic models of stellar subsurface convection and atmospheres to characterize the photospheric jitter. We present 3D radiative hydrodynamic models of several solar-type target stars of various masses and metallicities, discuss how the turbulent surface dynamics and spectral line characteristics depend on stellar properties, and provide stellar jitter estimates for these stars.

The substantial number of binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) now known ($\sim 50$) has revealed a strong connection between binarity and some morphological features including jets and low-ionisation structures. However, some morphological features and asymmetries might be too complex or subtle to ascribe to binary interactions alone. In these cases, a tertiary component, that is, a triple nucleus, could be the missing ingredient required to produce these features. The only proven triple, NGC 246, is alone insufficient to investigate the shaping role of triple nuclei, but one straightforward way to identify more triples is to search for binaries in nuclei with known visual companions. Here we demonstrate this approach with the SALT HRS (High Resolution Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope) discovery of a 4.81-d orbital period in the CSPN of Sp 3 which has a visual companion 0.31 arcsec away. The spectroscopic distance of the visual companion is in agreement with distance estimates to the nebula, the Gaia DR2 parallax of the central star, and the gravity distance of the central star. This supports a physical association between the visual companion and the inner 4.81 d binary, making the nucleus of Sp 3 a likely triple. We determine $T_\mathrm{eff}=68^{+12}_{-6}\ \text{kK},\ \log g=4.6\pm0.2\ \text{cm s}^{-2}$, and $v_\mathrm{rot}=80\pm20\ \text{km s}^{-1}$ for the primary from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model atmosphere analysis. The peculiar nebula presents an apparent bipolar morphology, jets, and an unexpected ‘extreme’ oxygen abundance discrepancy factor (adf) of $24.6^{+4.1}_{-3.4}$. The adf is inconsistent with the purported trend for longer orbital period post-common-envelope (CE) PNe to exhibit normal adfs, further highlighting the dominant influence of selection effects in post-CE PNe. Lastly, the Type I nebular abundances of Sp 3, whose origin is often attributed to more massive progenitors, are incongruous with the likely Galactic Thick Disk membership of Sp 3, possibly suggesting that rotation and binarity may play an important role in influencing the AGB nucleosynthesis of PNe.

In Kawahara et al. (2018) and Masuda et al. (2019), we reported the discovery of four self-lensing binaries consisting of F/G-type stars and (most likely) white dwarfs whose masses range from 0.2 to 0.6 solar masses. Here we present their updated system parameters based on new radial velocity data from the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, and the Gaia parallaxes and spectroscopic parameters of the primary stars. We also briefly discuss the astrophysical implications of these findings.

Solar simulations and observations showed that the detection of Earth twins around Sun-like stars is difficult in radial velocities with current methods techniques. The Sun has proved to be very useful to test processes, models, and analysis methods. The convective blueshift effect, dominating for the Sun, decreases towards lower mass stars, providing more suitable conditions to detect low mass planets. We describe the basic processes at work and how we extended a realistic solar model of radial velocity, photometry, astrometry and LogR′HK variability, using a coherent grid of stellar parameters covering a large range in mass and average activity levels. We present selected results concerning the impact of magnetic activity on Earth-mass planet detectability as a function of stellar type. We show how such realistic simulations can help characterizing the effect of stellar activity on RV and astrometric exoplanet detection.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory has detected relatively hard X-ray emission from the central stars of several planetary nebulae (PNe). A subset has no known late-type companions, making it very difficult to isolate which of several competing mechanisms may be producing the X-ray emission. The central star of NGC 2392 is one of the most vexing members, with substantial indirect evidence for a hot white dwarf (WD) companion. Here we report on the results of a radial velocity (RV) monitoring campaign of its central star with the HERMES échelle spectrograph of the Flemish 1.2 m Mercator telescope. We discover a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 1.902208 ± 0.000013 d and an RV semi-amplitude of 9.96 ± 0.13 km s−1. The high degree of nebula ionisation requires a WD companion (M ≳ 0.6M⊙), which the mass-function supports at orbital inclinations ≲ 7°, in agreement with the nebula orientation of 9°. The hard component of the X-ray spectrum may be explained by the companion accreting mass from the wind of the Roche lobe filling primary, while the softer component may be due to colliding winds. A companion with a stronger wind than the primary could produce the latter and would be consistent with models of the observed diffuse X-ray emission detected in the nebula. The diffuse X-rays may also be powered by the jets of up to 180 km s−1, and active accretion would imply that they may be the first active jets of a post-common-envelope PN, potentially making NGC 2392 an invaluable laboratory to study jet formation physics. The 1.9 d orbital period rules out a double-degenerate merger leading to a Type Ia supernova, and the weak wind of the primary likely also precludes a single-degenerate scenario. We suggest that a hard X-ray spectrum, in the absence of a late-type companion, could be a powerful tool to identify accreting WD companions.

To investigate the binary hypothesis in the formation of planetary nebulae, we have been doing long-term photometry and radial velocity (RV) monitoring of bright post-AGB stars which possess bipolar or ellipsoidal nebulae but no indication of a disk in their spectral energy distribution, indicative of a binary companion. RV’s are determined by cross correlating high-resolution spectra with a line mask. Stellar variability and companions both deform the cross correlation function (CCF) and induce periodic variations in the RV. To uniformly quantify the asymmetry of the CCF from a Gaussian, we propose to fit the CCF profile with a Gauss-Hermite series and determine all CCF parameters (RV, skewness, FWHM, and depth) in one single fit. We analyze the correlation and time series of these CCF parameters for V448 Lac and conclude that its RV variability is most likely due to stellar pulsation and not to an orbiting body.

From 1977 to 1999, thousands of accurate radial velocities in both hemispheres were made on a large variety of programmes with the two CORAVEL scanners. The data base of ~350000 individual observations will now be made available to complement the Gaia data.

We monitor a sample of CEMP-no stars using the CFHT and SALT telescopes to gain additional knowledge about the possible binarity of these stars. This information is valuable for each individual star, and additionally it could be used to further constrain their binary fraction. We find two new CEMP-no binaries and four additional CEMP-no stars that show some indication of radial velocity variations, resulting in a CEMP-no binary fraction of ~20%.

The Gaia-ESO survey (GES; Gilmore et al. (2012), Randich et al. (2013)) is a spectroscopic survey complementing the Gaia mission to bring accurate radial velocities and chemical abundances for 105 stars. Merle et al. (submitted to A&A; see also this volume) developped a tool (DOE) to detect multiple peaks in the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) of GES spectra. Using the GIRAFFE HR10 and HR21 settings, we were able to compare the efficiency of our SB detection tool depending on the wavelength range and resolution. We show that a careful design of CCF masks can improve the detection rate in the HR21 settings. HR21 spectra are similar to the ones produced by the RVS spectrograph of the Gaia mission, though the lower resolution of RVS spectra may result in a lower detection efficiency than the case of HR21. Analysis of RVS spectra in the context of spectroscopic binaries can take advantage of the lessons learnt from the GES to maximize the detection rate.

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES, Gilmore et al. 2012) provides a unique opportunity to detect spectroscopically multiplicity among different populations of the Galaxy using the cross-correlation functions (CCFs). We present here the GES internal Data Release 4 (iDR4) results of the detection of double, triple and quadruple-line spectroscopic binary candidates (SBs) and discuss some peculiar systems.

Gaia is an ESA cornerstone mission conducting a full sky survey over its 5 year operational period. Gaia performs astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements. The data processing is entrusted to scientists and engineers who have formed the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC). The photometric science alerts started in 2014. The first intermediate data release (Gaia DR1) took place 14 September 2016 and it has been extensively used by the community. Gaia DR2 is scheduled for April 2018. Gaia is expected to be able to continue observations roughly for another 5 years after the nominal phase. The procedure to grant funding for the extension period has been initiated. In case funding is granted, the total operational time of Gaia may be 10 years.

T-Tauri stars (TTS) are late-type pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars that are gravitationally contracting towards the MS. Those that possess a massive accretion disc are known as classical T-Tauri stars (cTTSs), and those that have exhausted the gas in their inner discs are known as weak-line T-Tauri stars (wTTSs). Magnetic fields largely dictate the angular momentum evolution of TTS and can affect the formation and migration of planets. Thus, characterizing their magnetic fields is critical for testing and developing stellar dynamo models, and trialling scenarios currently invoked to explain low-mass star and planet formation. The MaTYSSE programme (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in Exoplanets) aims to determine the magnetic topologies of ~30 wTTSs and monitor the long-term topology variability of ~5 cTTSs. We present several wTTSs that have been magnetically mapped thus far (using Zeeman Doppler Imaging), where we find a much wider range of field topologies compared to cTTSs and MS dwarfs with similar internal structures.

It is widely accepted that binary interactions are responsible for the shaping of planetary nebula. However, these binary interactions and evolutionary channels are poorly understood. Our recent study revealed a newly discovered population of low-luminosity, low-metallicity, likely binaries in the Magellanic Clouds: dusty post-RGB stars. They are likely to have evolved off the RGB via binary interaction. In this paper we present preliminary results of the first radial velocity monitoring of the post-RGB stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the implications on stellar (binary) evolution. We also investigate their link, if any, to the planetary nebulae systems.

In this contribution the focus is on post-AGB binaries. It is now well established that these are often surrounded by stable long-lived circumbinary discs of gas and dust. Here we introduce our monitoring programme with our high-resolution spectrograph HERMES mounted on the 1.2m Mercator telescope. We illustrate the use of time-series high-resolution spectra and show that jets observed in many systems are launched at the location of the companion. The jet is likely originating from a circum-companion accretion disc. The link of these systems to some PNe relies on the detection of similar orbits and hence wide spectroscopic orbits among central stars of PNe. The conclusion is that Keplerian discs as well as circum-companion discs are fundamental to understanding the properties and evolution of these interacting evolved binaries.

CARMENES is a pair of high-resolution (R ≳ 80, 000) spectrographs covering the wavelength range from 0.52 to 1.71 μm with only small gaps. The instrument has been optimized for precise radial velocity measurements. It was installed and commissioned at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto observatory in Southern Spain in 2015. The first large science program of CARMENES is a survey of ~300 M dwarfs, which started on Jan 1, 2016. We present an overview of the instrument, and provide a few examples of early science results.

Young associations, being sparsely populated and relatively close to the Sun, their members are found all over the sky. In the Solar Neighborhood, young moving groups are found within 100 pc with ages ranging from 5 to 120 Myr. While known members of these groups were identified mostly through the Hipparcos data, only the most massive members have been fully characterized so far, and defined the core members. In the last decades, several new candidate members have been identified, using different approaches. Based on the global properties of the core members (kinematics and over luminosity), those methods used several criteria to establish the membership, from qualitative manner to quantitive methods using reduced chi-squared or membership probability. A full confirmation of the membership for those numerous candidates requires radial velocity and parallax measurements to confirm their kinematics, age-dating indicator measurement to assess their youth and multiplicity follow-up to rule out binary objects. In this proceeding, we summarize a general recipe to assign membership, describe the numerous challenges for assigning membership, and end with a discussion on the appropriateness and reliability of the BANYAN I and II tools to assess membership.
