When low- and intermediate-mass stars pass through the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) they experience dramatic changes in their circumstellar shell (CSE) influenced by their mass loss, the possible presence of a (closeby) companion and the magnetic field. Masers, well spread in this environment, provide a powerful tool to reveal the CSE changes occurring when the stars undergo a transitional phase on the AGB. These can be indirect, via for instance the modification of the pumping conditions or a direct consequence of e.g. a companion and/or of the magnetic field. Evidences of such changes have been observed towards Miras, materialized by strong - both in intensity and degree of polarisation - (OH) flaring events and towards stars believed to be transitioning from the Mira to the OH/IR phase, showing an unusual high degree of polarisation. How OH maser emission can be used as a signpost of transitional phases along the AGB is explored.

The database of circumstellar OH masers by Engels & Bunzel (2015) was updated to include new 1612, 1665, and 1667 MHz OH maser observations published between 2015 and 2022. A cross-correlation of the database was made with infrared catalogues (AllWISE and 2MASS) and with GAIA DR3. This led frequently to significantly improved coordinates and identified contaminations with non-stellar sources. About 40% of all OH maser-detected stars were not detected by GAIA. These are mostly representatives of the population of highly obscured stars at the end of AGB or at the beginning of post-AGB evolution.

The OH/IR stars evolving on the Asymptotic Giant Branch are large-amplitude variable stars with periods in the range of ~400 to 2500 days, significantly longer than those of the related Mira variables. We use preliminary results from a monitoring program of the 1612-MHz OH maser variations of a sample of > 70 OH/IR stars to study a possible extension of Mira Period-Luminosity Relations to longer periods. The period distribution of the sample is split around P ~ 1100 days. Using WISE W3 absolute magnitudes as proxies for the luminosity and the best available distances, we found no convincing relation between periods and absolute magnitudes. A cause could be rapid evolution of the ‘extreme OH/IR stars’ (the group with P >1100 days) close to the tip of the AGB, where no increase of luminosity is expected on the short time-scales involved.

The role of mass loss from massive stars, especially episodic mass loss, is one of the outstanding open questions facing stellar evolution theory. Multiple lines of evidence are pointing to violent, episodic mass-loss events being responsible for removing a large part of the massive stellar envelope, especially in low-metallicity galaxies. The ERC ASSESS project aims to determine whether episodic mass loss is a dominant process in the evolution of the most massive stars by conducting the first extensive, multi-wavelength survey of evolved massive stars in the nearby Universe. The project hinges on the fact that mass-losing stars form dust and are bright in the mid-infrared. We aim to investigate the properties of evolved targets in nearby galaxies and estimate the amount of ejected mass, which will constrain evolutionary models. In this work we present some of our first observational results from the galaxies NGC 6822 and IC 10 obtained with OSIRIS (GTC).

The evolutionary link between Red Supergiants and Luminous Blue variables is interesting, but still poorly understood. We present the results of a study of the Galactic candidate luminous blue variable Wray 15-906, revealed via the detection of its infrared circumstellar shell (of ≍2 pc in diameter) with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Herschel Space Observatory. Using the stellar atmosphere code CMFGEN and the Gaia parallax, we found that Wray 15-906 is a relatively low-luminosity, log(L/Lȯ) ≍ 5.4, star with a temperature of 25±2 kK. In the framework of single star evolution, the obtained results suggest that Wray 15-906 is a post-red supergiant star with an initial mass of ≍ 25Mȯ and that before exploding as a supernova it could transform for a short time into a WN11h star. The presence of a shell with a mass 2.9±0.5Me indicates that Wray 15-906 has suffered substantial mass loss in the recent past.

The recent generation of dedicated wide-field, high-cadence sky-surveys have overwhelmed discovery statistics for all manner of extra-galactic transients, and uncovered new phenomena seemingly linked to the demise of massive stars. For the more established classes of transients, such as core-collapse supernovae, surges in discoveries are allowing true population studies to provide quantitative constraints not only on the explosion properties, but also on the progenitor populations. Crucially, such population insights are benefiting from creation of samples of transients constructed with largely unbiased methods for discovery and characterisation. Surrounding these discoveries are increasing samples of extreme transients that do not fit the standard core-collapse paradigm - requiring the invocation of exotic progenitor stars and placing demands on the stellar evolution of such systems. Here I will provide a high-level observationally-driven overview of recent results related to massive stellar transients.

This contribution presents new results on two members of the class of post-Red Supergiants, IRAS 17163-3907, the central star of the Fried Egg nebula and IRC +10420. New optical spectra in the blue spectral range confirm their spectral type to be of A-supergiant class. Our VLTI/GRAVITY K-band interferometry reveals that the neutral Na i 2.2 μm line emitting region is smaller than that of the hydrogen Brγ emission. This can be explained with the hydrogen emission the result of collisional excitation populating the higher levels in a neutral region instead them being populated through recombination in an ionised environment as mostly inferred in stellar winds. Finally, the central star of the Fried Egg nebula, has undergone 3 distinct mass loss episodes over the last hundreds of years. As it is likely that at least the last mass loss event occurred when the star was already a Yellow Hypergiant and not a Red Supergiant, we put forward the bi-stability mechanism as explanation for the mass loss.

Supernova properties in radio strongly depend on their circumstellar environment and they are an important probe to investigate the mass loss of supernova progenitors. Recently, core-collapse supernova observations in radio have been assembled and the rise time and peak luminosity distribution of core-collapse supernovae in radio has been obtained. In this talk, we will discuss the constraints on the mass-loss prescriptions of red supergiants obtained from the assembled radio properties of Type II supernovae. We take a couple of mass-loss prescriptions for red supergiants, calculate the rise time and peak luminosity distribution based on them, and compare the results with the observed distribution. We found that the widely spread radio rise time and peak luminosity distribution of Type II supernovae can only be explained by mass-loss prescriptions having strong dependence on the luminosity. Red supergiant mass-loss prescriptions should have steep luminosity dependence in the supernova progenitor range.

Massive stars drive strong winds that impact the surrounding interstellar medium, producing parsec-scale bubbles for isolated stars and superbubbles around young clusters. These bubbles can be observed across the electromagnetic spectrum, both the wind itself and the swept up interstellar gas. Runaway massive stars produce bow shocks that strongly compresses interstellar gas, producing bright infrared, optical and radio nebulae. With the detection of non-thermal radio emission from bow shocks, particle acceleration can now also be investigated. I review research on wind bubbles and bow shocks around massive stars, highlighting recent advances in infrared, radio and X-ray observations, and progress in multidimensional simulations of these nebulae. These advances enable quantitative comparisons between theory and observations and allow to test the importance of some physical processes such as thermal conduction and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in shaping nebulae and in constraining the energetics of stellar-wind feedback to the interstellar medium.

S-type AGB stars, with C/O ratios close to 1, are expected to have a mixed circumstellar chemistry as they transition from being oxygen-rich stars to carbon-rich stars. Recently, several different carbonaceous molecules, thought to be more characteristic of carbon stars, have been found in the circumstellar envelope of the S-type AGB star W Aql. We have obtained new high spatial resolution ALMA images of some of these molecules, specifically HC3N, SiC2 and SiC, and SiN, which we present here. We report diverse behaviour for these molecules, with SiC2 being seen with a symmetric spatial distribution around the star, SiN and SiC being asymmetrically distributed to the north-east of the star, and HC3N being seen in a broken shell to the south-west. These differing distributions point to complex dynamics in the circumstellar envelope of W Aql.

Binary interaction with a stellar or planetary companion has been proposed to be the driving mechanism behind large-scale asymmetries, such as spirals and disks, observed within AGB outflows. We developed the first chemical kinetics model that takes the effect of a stellar companions’s UV radiation into account. The presence of a stellar companion can initiate a rich photochemistry in the inner wind. Its impact is determined by the intensity of the UV radiation and the extinction the radiation experiences. The outcome of the inner wind photochemistry depends on the balance between two-body reactions and photoreactions. If photoreactions dominate, the outflow can appear molecule-poor. If two-body reactions dominate, chemical complexity within the outflow can increase, yielding daughter species with a large inner wind abundance. A comprehensive view on the molecular content of the outflow, especially combined with abundance profiles, can point towards the presence of a stellar companion.

Close binary evolution is widely invoked to explain the formation of axisymmetric planetary nebulae, after a brief common envelope phase. The evolution of the primary would be interrupted abruptly, its still quite massive envelope being fully ejected to form the PN, which should be more massive than a planetary nebula coming from the same star, were it single. We test this hypothesis by investigating the ionised and molecular masses of a sample consisting of 21 post-common-envelope planetary nebulae, roughly one fifth of their known total population, and comparing them to a large sample of regular planetary nebulae (not known to host close-binaries). We find that post-common-envelope planetary nebulae arising from single-degenerate systems are, on average, neither more nor less massive than regular planetary nebulae, whereas post-common-envelope planetary nebulae arising from double-degenerate systems are considerably more massive, and show substantially larger linear momenta and kinetic energy than the rest. Reconstruction of the common envelope of four objects further suggests that the mass of single-degenerate nebulae actually amounts to a very small fraction of the envelope of their progenitor stars. This leads to the uncomfortable question of where the rest of the envelope is, raising serious doubts on our understanding of these intriguing objects.

Massive stars are amongst the rarest but also most intriguing stars. Their extreme, magnetised stellar winds induce, by wind-ISM interaction, famous multi-wavelengths circumstellar gas nebulae of various morphologies, spanning from large-scale wind bubbles to stellar wind bow shocks, rings and bipolar shapes. We present two- and three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the circumstellar medium of such massive stars at different phase of their evolution. Particularly, we investigate the stability properties of 3D MHD bow shock nebulae around the runaway red supergiant stars IRC-10414 and Betelgeuse. Our results show that their astrospheres are stabilised by an organised, non-parallel ambient magnetic field. These findings suggest that Betelgeuse’s bar is of interstellar origin. Last, we explore the circular aspect of the young nebula around the Wolf-Rayet stars. It is found that Wolf-Rayet nebulae are not affected by the ISM gas distribution in which the stellar objects lie, even in the case of fast stellar motion: as testifies the ring-like surroundings of the Milky Way’s fastest Wolf-Rayet star, WR124. The morphology of these nebulae is tightly related to their pre-Wolf-Rayet wind geometry and to their phase evolution transition properties, which can generate bipolar shapes. We will further discuss their diffuse projected emission by means of radiative transfer calculations and show that the projected diffuse emission can appear as bipolar structures as in NGC6888.

The winds observed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are generally attributed to radiation pressure on dust, which is formed in the extended dynamical atmospheres of these pulsating, strongly convective stars. Current radiation-hydrodynamical models can explain many of the observed features, and they are on the brink of delivering a predictive theory of mass loss. This review summarizes recent results and ongoing work on winds of AGB stars, discussing critical ingredients of the driving mechanism, and first results of global 3D RHD star-and-wind-in-a-box simulations. With such models it becomes possible to follow the flow of matter, in full 3D geometry, all the way from the turbulent, pulsating interior of an AGB star, through its atmosphere and dust formation zone into the region where the wind is accelerated by radiation pressure on dust. Advanced instruments, which can resolve the stellar atmospheres, where the winds originate, provide essential data for testing the models.

The post-main sequence evolutionary path of massive stars comprises various transition phases, in which the stars shed large amounts of material into their environments. Our studies focus on two of them: B[e] supergiants and yellow hypergiants, for which we investigate the structure and dynamics within their environments. We find that each B[e] supergiant is surrounded by a unique set of rings or arc-like structures. These structures are either stable over time or they display high variability, including expansion and dilution. In contrast, yellow hypergiants are embedded in multiple shells of gas and dust. These objects are famous for their outburst activity. Moreover, the dynamics in their extended atmospheres imply an enhanced pulsation activity prior to outburst. The physical mechanism(s) leading to episodic mass ejections in these two types of stars is still uncertain. We propose that strange-mode instabilities, excited in the inflated envelopes of these objects, play a significant role.

To look at propagating winds from evolved stars into the interstellar medium is to look at how they are sustained. To understand their origins, we must look to the circumstances that create them in the first instance. In this article, I examine the physical conditions under which pulsation-enhanced, dust-driven winds are first generated. These initial conditions can help constrain the late evolutionary stages of these stars and provide insight into the mechanisms that cause the mass loss itself.

The cosmic origin of fluorine is still under debate. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are among the few suggested candidates to efficiently synthesis F in our Galaxy, however their relative contribution is not clear. In this paper, we briefly review the theoretical studies from stellar yield models of the F synthesis and chemical equilibrium models of the F-containing molecules in the outflow around AGB stars. Previous detections of the F-bearing species towards AGB and post-AGB stars are also highlighted. We suggest that high-resolution ALMA observations of the AlF, one of the two main carriers of F in the outflow of AGB stars, can provide a reliable tracer of the F-budget in AGB stars. This will be helpful to quantify the role of AGB stars in the Galactic F budget.

This contribution focuses on a rare example of the class of post-Red Supergiants, IRAS 17163-3907, the central star of the Fried Egg nebula. In particular, we discuss some of our recently published results in detail. The inner parts of the circumstellar environment of this evolved massive star are probed at milli-arcsec resolution using VLTI’s GRAVITY instrument operating in the K-band (2 µm), while larger, arcsecond, scales are probed by VISIR diffraction limited images around 10 µm, supplemented by a complete Spectral Energy Distribution. The spectro-interferometric data cover important diagnostic lines (Brγ, Na I), which we are able to constrain spatially. Both the presence and size of the Na i doublet in emission has been traditionally challenging to explain towards other objects of this class. In this study we show that a two-zone model in Local Thermal Equilibrium can reproduce both the observed sizes and strengths of the emission lines observed in the K-band, without the need of a pseudo-photosphere. In addition, we find evidence for the presence of a third hot inner shell, and demonstrate that the star has undergone at least three mass-loss episodes over roughly the past century. To explain the properties of the observed non-steady mass-loss we explore pulsation-driven and line-driven mass-loss and introduce the bi-stability jump as a possible underlying mechanism to explain mass-loss towards Yellow Hypergiants.

Circumstellar discs are known to exist in great variety, from gas-rich discs around the youngest stars to evolved debris discs such as the solar system’s zodiacal cloud. Through gravitational interaction, exoplanets embedded in these discs can generate density variations, imposing potentially observable structural features on the disc such as rings or gaps. Here we report on a mirrored double crescent pattern arising in simulations of discs harbouring a small, moderately eccentric planet - such as Mars. We show that the structure is a result of a directed apsidal precession occurring in particles that migrate the planet’s orbital region under Poynting-Robertson drag. We further analyze the strength of this effect with respect to planet and particle parameters.
