Let G be a finite solvable group. We prove that if $\chi\in{{\operatorname{Irr}}}(G)$ has odd degree and $\chi(1)$ is the minimal degree of the nonlinear irreducible characters of G, then $G/\operatorname{Ker}\chi$ is nilpotent-by-abelian.

Gagola and Lewis [‘A character theoretic condition characterizing nilpotent groups’, Comm. Algebra 27 (1999), 1053–1056] proved that a finite group G is nilpotent if and only if $\chi (1)^{2}$ divides $\lvert G:\textrm {ker}\,\chi \rvert $ for every irreducible character $\chi $ of G. The theorem was later generalised by using monolithic characters. We generalise the theorem further considering only strongly monolithic characters. We also give some criteria for solvability and nilpotency of finite groups by their strongly monolithic characters.

We present a family of counterexamples to a question proposed recently by Moretó concerning the character codegrees and the element orders of a finite solvable group.

Let G be a finite solvable group and let p be a prime divisor of $|G|$ . We prove that if every monomial monolithic character degree of G is divisible by p, then G has a normal p-complement and, if p is relatively prime to every monomial monolithic character degree of G, then G has a normal Sylow p-subgroup. We also classify all finite solvable groups having a unique imprimitive monolithic character.

We say that a group G of local (maybe formal) biholomorphisms satisfies the uniform intersection property if the intersection multiplicity $(\phi (V), W)$ takes only finitely many values as a function of G for any choice of analytic sets V and W of complementary dimension. In dimension $2$ we show that G satisfies the uniform intersection property if and only if it is finitely determined – that is, if there exists a natural number k such that different elements of G have different Taylor expansions of degree k at the origin. We also prove that G is finitely determined if and only if the action of G on the space of germs of analytic curves has discrete orbits.

We investigate unramified extensions of number fields with prescribed solvable Galois group G and certain extra conditions. In particular, we are interested in the minimal degree of a number field K, Galois over $\mathbb {Q}$ , such that K possesses an unramified G-extension. We improve the best known bounds for the degree of such number fields K for certain classes of solvable groups, in particular for nilpotent groups.

We give sufficient conditions for the non-triviality of the Poisson boundary of random walks on $H(\mathbb{Z})$ and its subgroups. The group $H(\mathbb{Z})$ is the group of piecewise projective homeomorphisms over the integers defined by Monod [Groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA110(12) (2013), 4524–4527]. For a finitely generated subgroup $H$ of $H(\mathbb{Z})$, we prove that either $H$ is solvable or every measure on $H$ with finite first moment that generates it as a semigroup has non-trivial Poisson boundary. In particular, we prove the non-triviality of the Poisson boundary of measures on Thompson’s group $F$ that generate it as a semigroup and have finite first moment, which answers a question by Kaimanovich [Thompson’s group $F$ is not Liouville. Let $G$ be a finite group and let $p$ be a prime factor of $|G|$. Suppose that $G$ is solvable and $P$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. In this note, we prove that $P{\vartriangleleft}G$ and $G/P$ is nilpotent if and only if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(1)^{2}$ divides $|G:\ker \unicode[STIX]{x1D711}|$ for all irreducible monomial $p$-Brauer characters $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ of $G$.

A space X is said to be Lipschitz 1-connected if every Lipschitz loop 𝛾 : S1 → X bounds a O (Lip(𝛾))-Lipschitz disk f : D2 → X. A Lipschitz 1-connected space admits a quadratic isoperimetric inequality, but it is unknown whether the converse is true. Cornulier and Tessera showed that certain solvable Lie groups have quadratic isoperimetric inequalities, and we extend their result to show that these groups are Lipschitz 1-connected.

Let $G$ be a finite solvable group and let $p$ be a prime. We prove that the intersection of the kernels of irreducible monomial $p$-Brauer characters of $G$ with degrees divisible by $p$ is $p$-closed.

Let $G$ be a finite solvable group and let $p$ be a prime. In this note, we prove that $p$ does not divide $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(1)$ for every irreducible monomial $p$-Brauer character $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ of $G$ if and only if $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup.

Let $H$ be a group. The co-maximal graph of subgroups of $H$, denoted by $\Gamma \left( H \right)$, is a graph whose vertices are non-trivial and proper subgroups of $H$ and two distinct vertices $L$ and $K$ are adjacent in $\Gamma \left( H \right)$ if and only if $H\,=\,LK$. In this paper, we study the connectivity, diameter, clique number, and vertex chromatic number of $\Gamma \left( H \right)$. For instance, we show that if $\Gamma \left( H \right)$ has no isolated vertex, then $\Gamma \left( H \right)$ is connected with diameter at most 3. Also, we characterize all finitely groups whose co-maximal graphs are connected. Among other results, we show that if $H$ is a finitely generated solvable group and $\Gamma \left( H \right)$ is connected, and moreover, the degree of a maximal subgroup is finite, then $H$ is finite. Furthermore, we show that the degree of each vertex in the co-maximal graph of a general linear group over an algebraically closed field is zero or infinite.

This note completes the proof of the structure theorem for pp-matroid groups which was stated in our earlier paper J. Krempa and A. Stocka [‘On sets of pp-generators of finite groups’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.91 (2015), 241–249].

Let $X$ be a simple, connected, $p$-valent, $G$-arc-transitive graph, where the subgroup $G\leq \text{Aut}(X)$ is solvable and $p\geq 3$ is a prime. We prove that $X$ is a regular cover over one of the three possible types of graphs with semi-edges. This enables short proofs of the facts that $G$ is at most 3-arc-transitive on $X$ and that its edge kernel is trivial. For pentavalent graphs, two further applications are given: all $G$-basic pentavalent graphs admitting a solvable arc-transitive group are constructed and an example of a non-Cayley graph of this kind is presented.

We remedy an omission in the proof of Proposition 2.7 of the paper ‘Cohomology and profinite topologies for solvable groups of finite rank’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.86 (2012), 254–265. This proposition states that a solvable group with finite abelian section rank has merely finitely many subgroups of any given index.

We show that a finite loop, whose inner mapping group is the direct product of a dihedral $2$-group and a nonabelian group of order $pq$ ($p$ and $q$ are distinct odd prime numbers), is solvable.

The bipartite divisor graph B(X), for a set Xof positive integers, and some of its properties have recently been studied. We construct the bipartite divisor graph for the product of subsets of positive integers and investigate some of its properties. We also give some applications in group theory.

We first prove that the Whitehead group of a torsion-free virtually solvable linear group vanishes. Next we make a reduction of the fibered isomorphism conjecture from virtually solvable groups to a class of virtually solvable $\mathbb {Q}$-linear groups. Finally we prove an L-theory analogue for elementary amenable groups.
