The analysis of thermoelastic deformations of a simply supported functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates subjected to a time harmonic sinusoidal temperature field on the top surface and varying through-the-thickness is illustrated in this paper. The FGM sandwich plates are assumed to be made of three layers and resting on Pasternak’s elastic foundations. The volume fractions of the constituents of the upper and lower layers and, hence, the effective material properties of them are assumed to vary in the thickness direction only whereas the core layer is still homogeneous. When in-plane sinusoidal variations of the displacements and the temperature that identically satisfy the boundary conditions at the edges, the governing equations of motion are solved analytically by using various shear deformation theories as well as the classical one. The influences of the time parameter, power law index, temperature exponent, top-to-bottom surface temperature ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and the foundation parameters on the dynamic bending are investigated.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in microchannels play prominent roles in many engineering applications. The present study is an effort towards the simulation of flow in microchannel considering FSI. Top boundary of the microchannel is assumed to be rigid and the bottom boundary, which is modeled as a Bernoulli-Euler beam, is simulated by size-dependent beam elements for finite element method (FEM) based on a modified couple stress theory. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) using D2Q13 LB model is coupled to the FEM in order to solve fluid part of FSI problem. In the present study, the governing equations are non-dimensionalized and the set of dimensionless groups is exhibited to show their effects on micro-beam displacement. The numerical results show that the displacements of the micro-beam predicted by the size-dependent beam element are smaller than those by the classical beam element.

In this paper, He's homotopy perturbation method is utilized to obtain the analytical solution for the nonlinear natural frequency of functionally graded nanobeam. The functionally graded nanobeam is modeled using the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory with von Karman nonlinearity relation. The boundary conditions of problem are considered with both sides simply supported and simply supported-clamped. The Galerkin's method is utilized to decrease the nonlinear partial differential equation to a nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equation. Based on numerical results, homotopy perturbation method convergence is illustrated. According to obtained results, it is seen that the second term of the homotopy perturbation method gives extremely precise solution.

This paper is devoted to time domain numerical solutions of two-dimensional (2D) material interface problems governed by the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) Maxwell's equations with discontinuous electromagnetic solutions. Due to the discontinuity in wave solutions across the interface, the usual numerical methods will converge slowly or even fail to converge. This calls for the development of advanced interface treatments for popular Maxwell solvers. We will investigate such interface treatments by considering two typical Maxwell solvers – one based on collocation formulation and another based on Galerkin formulation. To restore the accuracy reduction of the collocation finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm near an interface, the physical jump conditions relating discontinuous wave solutions on both sides of the interface must be rigorously enforced. For this purpose, a novel matched interface and boundary (MIB) scheme is proposed in this work, in which new jump conditions are derived so that the discontinuous and staggered features of electric and magnetic field components can be accommodated. The resulting MIB time-domain (MIBTD) scheme satisfies the jump conditions locally and suppresses the staircase approximation errors completely over the Yee lattices. In the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm – a popular GalerkinMaxwell solver, a proper numerical flux can be designed to accurately capture the jumps in the electromagnetic waves across the interface and automatically preserves the discontinuity in the explicit time integration. The DGTD solution to Maxwell interface problems is explored in this work, by considering a nodal based high order discontinuous Galerkin method. In benchmark TM and TE tests with analytical solutions, both MIBTD and DGTD schemes achieve the second order of accuracy in solving circular interfaces. In comparison, the numerical convergence of the MIBTD method is slightly more uniform, while the DGTD method is more flexible and robust.

This paper presents three boundary meshless methods for solving problems of steady-state and transient heat conduction in nonlinear functionally graded materials (FGMs). The three methods are, respectively, the method of fundamental solution (MFS), the boundary knot method (BKM), and the collocation Trefftz method (CTM) in conjunction with Kirchhoff transformation and various variable transformations. In the analysis, Laplace transform technique is employed to handle the time variable in transient heat conduction problem and the Stehfest numerical Laplace inversion is applied to retrieve the corresponding time-dependent solutions. The proposed MFS, BKM and CTM are mathematically simple, easy-to-programming, meshless, highly accurate and integration-free. Three numerical examples of steady state and transient heat conduction in nonlinear FGMs are considered, and the results are compared with those from meshless local boundary integral equation method (LBIEM) and analytical solutions to demonstrate the efficiency of the present schemes.

We propose some new weighted averaging methods for gradient recovery, and present analytical and numerical investigation on the performance of these weighted averaging methods. It is shown analytically that the harmonic averaging yields a superconvergent gradient for any mesh in one-dimension and the rectangular mesh in two-dimension. Numerical results indicate that these new weighted averaging methods are better recovered gradient approaches than the simple averaging and geometry averaging methods under triangular mesh.

In this work, the improved (G′/G)-expansion method is proposed for constructing more general exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equation with the aid of symbolic computation. In order to illustrate the validity of the method we choose the RLW equation and SRLW equation. As a result, many new and more general exact solutions have been obtained for the equations. We will compare our solutions with those gained by the other authors.

In the present work concentrated on the two-dimensional problem of generalized thermoelasticity for a fiber-reinforced anisotropic thick plate under initial stress. Using generalized thermoelasticity theory with fractional order heat conduction, the problem has been solved by a normal mode analysis. The effect of hydrostatic initial stresses and fractional order parameter is shown graphically on the distributions of the temperature, displacement and thermal stress components. It is found from the graphs that the initial stress and the fractional parameter significantly influences the varieties of field amounts.

This paper deals with the solvability and the convergence of a class of unsymmetric Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method with radial basis function (RBF) kernels generated trial spaces. Local weak-form testings are done with step-functions. It is proved that subject to sufficiently many appropriate testings, solvability of the unsymmetric RBF-MLPG resultant systems can be guaranteed. Moreover, an error analysis shows that this numerical approximation converges at the same rate as found in RBF interpolation. Numerical results (in double precision) give good agreement with the provided theory.

In present paper, the locomotion of an oblate jellyfish is numerically investigated by using a momentum exchange-based immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann method based on a dynamic model describing the oblate jellyfish. The present investigation is agreed fairly well with the previous experimental works. The Reynolds number and the mass density of the jellyfish are found to have significant effects on the locomotion of the oblate jellyfish. Increasing Reynolds number, the motion frequency of the jellyfish becomes slow due to the reduced work done for the pulsations, and decreases and increases before and after the mass density ratio of the jellyfish to the carried fluid is 0.1. The total work increases rapidly at small mass density ratios and slowly increases to a constant value at large mass density ratio. Moreover, as mass density ratio increases, the maximum forward velocity significantly reduces in the contraction stage, while the minimum forward velocity increases in the relaxation stage.

The second order weighted and shifted Grünwald difference (WSGD) operators are developed in [Tian, Zhou and Deng, Math. Comput., 84 (2015), pp. 1703–1727] to solve space fractional partial differential equations. Along this direction, we further design a new family of second order WSGD operators; by properly choosing the weighted parameters, they can be effectively used to discretize space (Riemann-Liouville) fractional derivatives. Based on the new second order WSGD operators, we derive a family of difference schemes for the space fractional advection diffusion equation. By von Neumann stability analysis, it is proved that the obtained schemes are unconditionally stable. Finally, extensive numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the performance of the schemes and confirm the convergence orders.

A new sharp interface method with the combination of Ghost Fluid Method (GFM) and Cut Cell scheme is developed to study compressible multi-phase flows with clear interfaces. Straight-line cutting is applied on the cells passed by the interface. A new real-ghost mixing method is presented and applied around the cut cells to deal with very small cut cells. A cut face reconstruction method similar to volume of fluid is applied to deal with topological change problems. A high order Level Set (LS) method is applied to evolve the free interface, with the Level Set velocities from exact Riemann solver on the cut faces. Various 1D and 2D numerical examples are tested to show the robustness and ability of the present method in wide flow variable domains. This method benefits from cut cell on the sharp interface description, shows good conservation performance, and does not have the topological change difficulty of the full cut cell method presented in Chang, Deng & Theofanous, J. Comput. Phys., 242 (2013), pp. 946–990.

In this work, we examine the mathematical analysis and numerical simulation of pattern formation in a subdiffusive multicomponents fractional-reaction-diffusion system that models the spatial interrelationship between two preys and predator species. The major result is centered on the analysis of the system for linear stability. Analysis of the main model reflects that the dynamical system is locally and globally asymptotically stable. We propose some useful theorems based on the existence and permanence of the species to validate our theoretical findings. Reliable and efficient methods in space and time are formulated to handle any space fractional reaction-diffusion system. We numerically present the complexity of the dynamics that are theoretically discussed. The simulation results in one, two and three dimensions show some amazing scenarios.

In this paper the space variable-order fractional Schrödinger equation (VOFSE) is studied numerically, where the variable-order fractional derivative is described here in the sense of the quantum Riesz-Feller definition. The proposed numerical method is the weighted average non-standard finite difference method (WANSFDM). Special attention is given to study the stability analysis and the convergence of the proposed method. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to show that this method is reliable and computationally efficient.

This paper investigates the laminar boundary layer flow of nanofluid induced by a radially stretching sheet. Nanofluid model exhibiting Brownian motion and thermophoresis is used. Series solutions for a reduced system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations are obtained by homotopy analysis method (HAM). Comparative study between the HAM solutions and previously published numerical results shows an excellent agreement. Velocity, temperature and mass fraction are displayed for various values of parameters. The local skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number are computed. It is observed that the presence of nanoparticles enhances the thermal conductivity of base fluid. It is found that the convective heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) is decreased with an increase in concentration of nanoparticles whereas Sherwood number increases when concentration of nanoparticles in the base fluid is increased.

We present a convex-splitting scheme for the fourth order parabolic equation derived from a diffuse interface model with Peng-Robinson equation of state for pure substance. The semi-implicit scheme is proven to be uniquely solvable, mass conservative, unconditionally energy stable and L∞ convergent with the order of . The numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and also show good agreement of the numerical solution with laboratory experimental results.

In this paper, we develop a multi-symplectic wavelet collocation method for three-dimensional (3-D) Maxwell’s equations. For the multi-symplectic formulation of the equations, wavelet collocation method based on autocorrelation functions is applied for spatial discretization and appropriate symplectic scheme is employed for time integration. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed method is multi-symplectic, unconditionally stable and energy-preserving under periodic boundary conditions. The numerical dispersion relation is investigated. Combined with splitting scheme, an explicit splitting symplectic wavelet collocation method is also constructed. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed methods are efficient, have high spatial accuracy and can preserve energy conservation laws exactly.

An analysis is performed to study the influence of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on unsteady MHD laminar boundary layer flow of viscous, incompressible fluid over a vertical stretching plate embedded in a sparsely packed porous medium in the presence of heat generation/absorption. The flow in the porous medium is governed by Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. A uniform heat source or sink is presented in the solid phase. By applying similarity analysis, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of time dependent non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations and they are solved numerically by Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method along with shooting technique. The obtained results are displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of different physical parameters on the velocity, temperature profile and heat transfer rate for both fluid and solid phases. Moreover, the numerical results obtained in this study are compared with the existing literature in the case of LTE and found that they are in good agreement.

A spectral Jacobi-collocation approximation is proposed for Volterra delay integro-differential equations with weakly singular kernels. In this paper, we consider the special case that the underlying solutions of equations are sufficiently smooth. We provide a rigorous error analysis for the proposed method, which shows that both the errors of approximate solutions and the errors of approximate derivatives decay exponentially in L∞ norm and weighted L2 norm. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate our error analysis.

Characteristic boundary conditions that are capable of handling general fluid mixtures flow at all flow speeds are developed. The formulation is based on fundamental thermodynamics theories incorporated into an efficient preconditioning scheme in a unified manner. Local one-dimensional inviscid (LODI) relations compatible to the preconditioning system are proposed to obtain information carried by incoming characteristic waves at boundaries accurately. The approach has been validated against a variety of sample problems at a broad range of fluid states and flow speeds. Both acoustic waves and hydrodynamic flow features can pass through the boundaries of computational domain transparently without any un-physical reflection or spurious distortion. The approach can be reliably applied to fluid flows at extensive thermodynamic states and flow speeds in numerical simulations. Moreover, the use of the boundary condition shows to improve the computational efficiency.
