A scheme is developed to study numerical solution of the time-fractional shock wave equation and wave equation under initial conditions by the homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The fractional derivatives are taken in the Caputo sense. The solutions are given in the form of series with easily computable terms. Numerical results are illustrated through the graph.

We propose a numerical solution to incorporate in the simulation of a system of conservation laws boundary conditions that come from a microscopic modeling in the small mean free path regime. The typical example we discuss is the derivation of the Euler system from the BGK equation. The boundary condition relies on the analysis of boundary layers formation that accounts from the fact that the incoming kinetic flux might be far from the thermodynamic equilibrium.

Mast cells (MCs) play an important role in the immune system. Through connective tissues, mechanical stimuli activate intracellular calcium signaling pathways, induce a variety of mediators including leukotriene C4 (LTC4) release, and affect MCs’ microenvironment. This paper focuses on MCs’ intracellular calcium dynamics and LTC4 release responding to mechanical stimuli, explores signaling pathways in MCs and the effect of interstitial fluid flow on the transport of biological messengers and feedback in the MCs network. We use a mathematical model to show that (i) mechanical stimuli including shear stress induced by interstitial fluid flow can activate mechano-sensitive (MS) ion channels on MCs’ membrane and allow Ca2+ entry, which increases intracellular Ca2+ concentration and leads to LTC4 release; (ii) LTC4 in the extracellular space (ECS) acts on surface cysteinyl leukotriene receptors (LTC4R) on adjacent cells, leading to Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels. An elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration further stimulates LTC4 release and creates a positive feedback in the MCs network. The findings of this study may facilitate our understanding of the mechanotransduction process in MCs induced by mechanical stimuli, contribute to understanding of interstitial flow-related mechanobiology in MCs network, and provide a methodology for quantitatively analyzing physical treatment methods including acupuncture and massage in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

In this paper, we construct semi-discrete two-grid finite element schemes and full-discrete two-grid finite element schemes for the two-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The semi-discrete schemes are proved to be convergent with an optimal convergence order and the full-discrete schemes, verified by a numerical example, work well and are more efficient than the standard finite element method.

Multi-field coupling simulation method based on the physical principles is used to simulate the discharge characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator. Considering the effect of the energy transferring for air, the flow characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator are simulated. The elastic heating sources and ion joule heating sources are the two main sources of energy. Through the collisions, the energy of ions is transferred to the neutral gas quickly. The flow characteristics of a series of blast waves and the synthetic jet which erupt from the plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) actuator are simulated. The blast wave not only promotes outward, but also accelerates the gas mixing the inhaled gas from the outside cavity with the residual gas inside the cavity. The performances of PSJ actuator fluctuate in the first three incentive cycles and become stable after that.

This article is devoted to analyze some ambiguities coming from a class of sediment transport models. The models under consideration are governed by the coupling between the shallow-water and the Exner equations. Since the PDE system turns out to be an hyperbolic system in non conservative form, ambiguities may occur as soon as the solution contains shock waves. To enforce a unique definition of the discontinuous solutions, we adopt the path-theory introduced by Dal Maso, LeFLoch and Murat [18]. According to the path choices, we exhibit several shock definitions and we prove that a shock with a constant propagation speed and a given left state may connect an arbitrary right state. As a consequence, additional assumptions (coming from physical considerations or other arguments) must be chosen to enforce a unique definition. Moreover, we show that numerical ambiguities may still exist even when a path is chosen to select the system's solution.

In this paper, a nonlinear boundary value problem in a three dimensional thin domain with Tresca’s friction law is considered. The small change of variable z = x3/ε transforms the initial problem posed in the domain Ωε into a new problem posed on a fixed domain Ω independent of the parameter ε. As a main result, we obtain some estimates independent of the small parameter. The passage to the limit on ε, permits to prove the results concerning the limit of the weak problem and its uniqueness.

In the paper, we present an efficient two-grid method for the approximation of two-dimensional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations using a expanded mixed finite-element method. We transfer the nonlinear reaction diffusion equation into first order nonlinear equations. The solution of the nonlinear system on the fine space is reduced to the solutions of two small (one linear and one non-linear) systems on the coarse space and a linear system on the fine space. Moreover, we obtain the error estimation for the two-grid algorithm. It is showed that coarse space can be extremely coarse and achieve asymptotically optimal approximation as long as the mesh sizes satisfy . An numerical example is also given to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

In this paper, a new formulation is proposed to evaluate the origin intensity factors (OIFs) in the singular boundary method (SBM) for solving 3D potential problems with Dirichlet boundary condition. The SBM is a strong-form boundary discretization collocation technique and is mathematically simple, easy-to-program, and free of mesh. The crucial step in the implementation of the SBM is to determine the OIFs which isolate the singularities of the fundamental solutions. Traditionally, the inverse interpolation technique (IIT) is adopted to calculate the OIFs on Dirichlet boundary, which is time consuming for large-scale simulation. In recent years, the new methodology has been developed to efficiently calculate the OIFs on Neumann boundary, but the Dirichlet problem remains an open issue. This study employs the subtracting and adding-back technique based on the integration of the fundamental solution over the whole boundary to develop a new formulation of the OIFs on 3D Dirichlet boundary. Several problems with varied domain shapes and boundary conditions are carried out to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed scheme in comparison with the SBM based on inverse interpolation technique, the method of fundamental solutions, and the boundary element method.

The elastic-plastic response of the functionally graded thick-walled tube subjected to internal pressure is investigated by using the relation of the volume average stresses of constituents and the macroscopic stress of composite material in micromechanics. The tube consists of two idealized isotropic elastic-plastic materials whose volume fractions are power functions of the radius. As the internal pressure increases, the deformations of one phase and two phases from elastic to plastic are analyzed. In order to simplify the calculations we assume both materials with the same Poisson's ratio. By using the assumption of a uniform strain field within the representative volume element and the Tresca yield criterion, the theoretical solutions are obtained for the case of two elastic phases and the case of two plastic phases, and the function of the radial displacement is presented for the case with both elastic and plastic phases. The yield criterion of functionally graded material is given in terms of the yield stresses and volume fractions of constituents rather than Young's modulus and yield stress with different unknown parameters of the whole material in the existing papers. Finally we also discuss the position where the plastic deformation first occurs and the conditions for which material first yields in the tube.

The finite difference (FD) method is popular in the computational fluid dynamics and widely used in various flow simulations. Most of the FD schemes are developed on the uniform Cartesian grids; however, the use of nonuniform or curvilinear grids is inevitable for adapting to the complex configurations and the coordinate transformation is usually adopted. Therefore the question that whether the characteristics of the numerical schemes evaluated on the uniform grids can be preserved on the nonuniform grids arises, which is seldom discussed. Based on the one-dimensional wave equation, this paper systematically studies the characteristics of the high-order FD schemes on nonuniform grids, including the order of accuracy, resolution characteristics and the numerical stability. Especially, the Fourier analysis involving the metrics is presented for the first time and the relation between the resolution of numerical schemes and the stretching ratio of grids is discussed. Analysis shows that for smooth varying grids, these characteristics can be generally preserved after the coordinate transformation. Numerical tests also validate our conclusions.

In this paper, we investigate the superconvergence results for optimal control problems governed by parabolic equations with semidiscrete mixed finite element approximation. We use the lowest order mixed finite element spaces to discrete the state and costate variables while use piecewise constant function to discrete the control variable. Superconvergence estimates for both the state variable and its gradient variable are obtained.

Direct numerical simulations of the transition process from steady laminar to chaotic flow are considered in this study with the relatively new incompressible lattice Boltzmann equation. Numerically, a multiple relaxation time fully incompressible lattice Boltzmann equation is implemented in a 2D driven cavity. Spatial discretization is 2nd-order accurate, and the Kolmogorov length scale estimation based on Reynolds number (Re) dictates grid resolution. Initial simulations show the method to be accurate for steady laminar flows, while higher Re simulations reveal periodic flow behavior consistent with an initial Hopf bifurcation at Re 7,988. Non-repeating flow behavior is observed in the phase space trajectories above Re 13,063, and is evidence of the transition to a chaotic flow regime. Finally, flows at Reynolds numbers above the chaotic transition point are simulated and found with statistical properties in good agreement with literature.

In this paper, a switch function-based gas-kinetic scheme (SF-GKS) is presented for the simulation of inviscid and viscous compressible flows. With the finite volume discretization, Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are solved and the SF-GKS is applied to evaluate the inviscid flux at cell interface. The viscous flux is obtained by the conventional smooth function approximation. Unlike the traditional gas-kinetic scheme in the calculation of inviscid flux such as Kinetic Flux Vector Splitting (KFVS), the numerical dissipation is controlled with a switch function in the present scheme. That is, the numerical dissipation is only introduced in the region around strong shock waves. As a consequence, the present SF-GKS can well capture strong shock waves and thin boundary layers simultaneously. The present SF-GKS is firstly validated by its application to the inviscid flow problems, including 1-D Euler shock tube, regular shock reflection and double Mach reflection. Then, SF-GKS is extended to solve viscous transonic and hypersonic flow problems. Good agreement between the present results and those in the literature verifies the accuracy and robustness of SF-GKS.

In this article, by applying the Stokes projection and an orthogonal projection with respect to curl and div operators, some new error estimates of finite element method (FEM) for the stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are obtained. To our knowledge, it is the first time to establish the error bounds which are explicitly dependent on the Reynolds numbers, coupling number and mesh size. On the other hand, The uniform stability and convergence of an Oseen type finite element iterative method for MHD with respect to high hydrodynamic Reynolds number Re and magnetic Reynolds number Rm, or small δ=1–σ with

(C0, C1 are constants depending only on Ω and F is related to the source terms of equations) are analyzed under the condition that . Finally, some numerical tests are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm.

A problem of two equal, semi-permeable, collinear cracks, situated normal to the edges of an infinitely long piezoelectric strip is considered. Piezoelectric strip being prescribed out-of-plane shear stress and in-plane electric-displacement. The Fourier series and integral equation methods are adopted to obtain analytical solution of the problem. Closed-form analytic expressions are derived for various fracture parameters viz. crack-sliding displacement, crack opening potential drop, field intensity factors and energy release rate. An numerical case study is considered for poled PZT–5H, BaTiO3 and PZT–6B piezoelectric ceramics to study the effect of applied electro-mechanical loadings, crack-face boundary conditions as well as inter-crack distance on fracture parameters. The obtained results are presented graphically, discussed and concluded.

In this paper, a method for extracting stress intensity factors (SIFs) in orthotropic thermoelasticity fracture by the extended finite element method (XFEM) and interaction integral method is present. The proposed method is utilized in linear elastic crack problems. The numerical results of the SIFs are presented and compared with those obtained using boundary element method (BEM). The good accordance among these two methods proves the applicability of the proposed approach and conforms its capability of efficiently extracting thermoelasticity fracture parameters in orthotropic material.

We explore the stability of matching boundary conditions in one space dimension, which were proposed recently for atomic simulations (Wang and Tang, Int. J. Numer. Mech. Eng., 93 (2013), pp. 1255–1285). For a finite segment of the linear harmonic chain, we construct explicit energy functionals that decay along with time. For a nonlinear atomic chain with its nonlinearity vanished around the boundaries, an energy functional is constructed for the first order matching boundary condition. Numerical verifications are also presented.

This paper proposes an extrapolation cascadic multigrid (EXCMG) method to solve elliptic problems in domains with reentrant corners. On a class of λ-graded meshes, we derive some new extrapolation formulas to construct a high-order approximation to the finite element solution on the next finer mesh using the numerical solutions on two-level of grids (current and previous grids). Then, this high-order approximation is used as the initial guess to reduce computational cost of the conjugate gradient method. Recursive application of this idea results in the EXCMG method proposed in this paper. Finally, numerical results for a crack problem and an L-shaped problem are presented to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed EXCMG method.

In this paper, we construct a simplified neuronal model that is capable of simulating the instigation of cortical spreading depression (CSD) and propagation of a CSD wave. Our model is a simplification and extension of a single neuron model proposed in the literature for studying the instigation of CSD. Using the simplified neuronal model, we construct a network of these simplified neurons. This network model shows that the propagation of a CSD wave occurs naturally after it is instigated electrically or chemically. Although the model is simple, the speed of the CSD wave predicted by our model is consistent with experimentally observed values. Finally, our model allows us to investigate the effects of specific ion channels on the spread of a CSD wave.
