The main purpose of this work is to contrast and analyze a large time-stepping numerical method for the Swift-Hohenberg (SH) equation. This model requires very large time simulation to reach steady state, so developing a large time step algorithm becomes necessary to improve the computational efficiency. In this paper, a semi-implicit Euler schemes in time is adopted. An extra artificial term is added to the discretized system in order to preserve the energy stability unconditionally. The stability property is proved rigorously based on an energy approach. Numerical experiments are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the large time-stepping approaches by comparing with the classical scheme.

Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are a coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations consisting of the Nernst-Planck equation and the electrostatic Poisson equation with delta distribution sources, which describe the electrodiffusion of ions in a solvated biomolecular system. In this paper, some error bounds for a piecewise finite element approximation to this problem are derived. Several numerical examples including biomolecular problems are shown to support our analysis.

In this paper, we study an efficient scheme for nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations discretized by mixed finite element methods. We mainly concern the case when pressure coefficients and source terms are nonlinear. To linearize the nonlinear mixed equations, we use the two-grid algorithm. We first solve the nonlinear equations on the coarse grid, then, on the fine mesh, we solve a linearized problem using Newton iteration once. It is shown that the algorithm can achieve asymptotically optimal approximation as long as the mesh sizes satisfy H = O(h1/2). As a result, solving such a large class of nonlinear equations will not be much more difficult than getting solutions of one linearized system.

This paper derives a higher order hybrid stress finite element method on quadrilateral meshes for linear plane elasticity problems. The method employs continuous piecewise bi-quadratic functions in local coordinates to approximate the displacement vector and a piecewise-independent 15-parameter mode to approximate the stress tensor. Error estimation shows that the method is free from Poisson-locking and has second-order accuracy in the energy norm. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

This paper aims to investigate nonlinear oscillations of an elevator cable in a drum drive. The governing equation of motion of the objective system is developed by virtue of Lagrangian’s method. A complicated term is broached in the governing equation of the motion of the system owing to existence of multiplication of a quadratic function of velocity with a sinusoidal function of displacement in the kinetic energy of the system. The obtained equation is an example of a well-known category of nonlinear oscillators, namely, non-natural systems. Due to the complex terms in the governing equation, perturbation methods cannot directly extract any closed form expressions for the natural frequency. Unavoidably, different non-perturbative approaches are employed to solve the problem and to elicit a closed-form expression for the natural frequency. Energy balance method, modified energy balance method and variational approach are utilized for frequency analyzing of the system. Frequency-amplitude relationships are analytically obtained for nonlinear vibration of the elevator’s drum. In order to examine accuracy of the obtained results, exact solutions are numerically obtained and then compared with those obtained from approximate closed-form solutions for several cases. In a parametric study for different nonlinear parameters, variation of the natural frequencies against the initial amplitude is investigated. Accuracy of the three different approaches is then discussed for both small and large amplitudes of the oscillations.

In this paper the fractional Euler-Lagrange equation is considered. The fractional equation with the left and right Caputo derivatives of order α ∈ (0,1] is transformed into its corresponding integral form. Next, we present a numerical solution of the integral form of the considered equation. On the basis of numerical results, the convergence of the proposed method is determined. Examples of numerical solutions of this equation are shown in the final part of this paper.

In this paper, we present numerical computational methods for solving the fracture problem in brittle and ductile materials with no prior knowledge of the topology of crack path. Moreover, these methods are capable of modeling the crack initiation. We perform numerical simulations of pieces of brittle material based on global approach and taken into account the thermal effect in crack propagation. On the other hand, we propose also a numerical method for solving the fracture problem in a ductile material based on elements deletion method and also using thermo-mechanical behavior and damage laws. In order to achieve the last purpose, we simulate the orthogonal cutting process.

In this work, the modified ghost fluid method is developed to deal with 2D compressible fluid interacting with elastic solid in an Euler-Lagrange coupled system. In applying the modified Ghost Fluid Method to treat the fluid-elastic solid coupling, the Navier equations for elastic solid are cast into a system similar to the Euler equations but in Lagrangian coordinates. Furthermore, to take into account the influence of material deformation and nonlinear wave interaction at the interface, an Euler-Lagrange Riemann problem is constructed and solved approximately along the normal direction of the interface to predict the interfacial status and then define the ghost fluid and ghost solid states. Numerical tests are presented to verify the resultant method.

Fourier transform is applied to remove the time-dependent variable in the diffusion equation. Under non-harmonic initial conditions this gives rise to a non-homogeneous Helmholtz equation, which is solved by the method of fundamental solutions and the method of particular solutions. The particular solution of Helmholtz equation is available as shown in [4, 15]. The approximate solution in frequency domain is then inverted numerically using the inverse Fourier transform algorithm. Complex frequencies are used in order to avoid aliasing phenomena and to allow the computation of the static response. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving 2-D diffusion equations.

The differential quadrature method (DQM) has been successfully used in a variety of fields. Similar to the conventional point discrete methods such as the collocation method and finite difference method, however, the DQM has some difficulty in dealing with singular functions like the Dirac-delta function. In this paper, two modifications are introduced to overcome the difficulty encountered in solving differential equations with Dirac-delta functions by using the DQM. The moving point load is work-equivalent to loads applied at all grid points and the governing equation is numerically integrated before it is discretized in terms of the differential quadrature. With these modifications, static behavior and forced vibration of beams under a stationary or a moving point load are successfully analyzed by directly using the DQM. It is demonstrated that the modified DQM can yield very accurate solutions. The compactness and computational efficiency of the DQM are retained in solving the partial differential equations with a time dependent Dirac-delta function.

In this paper, the nonlinear boundary value problem (BVP) for the Jeffery-Hamel flow equations taking into consideration the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effects is solved by using the modified Adomian decomposition method. We first transform the original two-dimensional MHD Jeffery-Hamel problem into an equivalent third-order BVP, then solve by the modified Adomian decomposition method for analytical approximations. Ultimately, the effects of Reynolds number and Hartmann number are discussed.

The paper makes a comparative study of the finite element method (FEM) and the finite difference method (FDM) for two-dimensional fractional advection-dispersion equation (FADE) which has recently been considered a promising tool in modeling non-Fickian solute transport in groundwater. Due to the non-local property of integro-differential operator of the space-fractional derivative, numerical solution of FADE is very challenging and little has been reported in literature, especially for high-dimensional case. In order to effectively apply the FEM and the FDM to the FADE on a rectangular domain, a backward-distance algorithm is presented to extend the triangular elements to generic polygon elements in the finite element analysis, and a variable-step vector Grünwald formula is proposed to improve the solution accuracy of the conventional finite difference scheme. Numerical investigation shows that the FEM compares favorably with the FDM in terms of accuracy and convergence rate whereas the latter enjoys less computational effort.

In this paper, we analyze a nonconforming finite element method for the computation of transmission eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions. The error estimates of the eigenvalue and eigenfunction approximation are given, respectively. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results.

A new simple mathematical method has been proposed to predict rock stress around a noncircular tunnel and the method is calibrated and validated with a numerical model. It can be found that the tunnel shapes and polar angles affect the applicable zone of the theoretical model significantly and the applicable zone of a rectangular tunnel was obtained using this method. The method can be used to predict the values of the concentrated stress, and to analyze the change rate of rock stress and back to calculate the mechanical boundary condition in the applicable zone. The results of the stress change rate indicate that the horizontal stress is negatively related to the vertical boundary load and positively related to the horizontal boundary load. The vertical stress is negatively related to the horizontal boundary load and positively related to the vertical boundary load. These findings can be used to explain the evolution of the vertical increment in stress obtained with field-based borehole stress monitoring.

In this paper, the magnetic field effects on natural convection of power-law nanofluids in rectangular enclosures are investigated numerically with the lattice Boltzmann method. The fluid in the cavity is a water-based nanofluid containing Cu nanoparticles and the investigations are carried out for different governing parameters including Hartmann number (0.0≤Ha≤20.0), Rayleigh number (104≤Ra≤106), power-law index (0.5≤n≤1.0), nanopartical volume fraction (0.0≤ϕ≤0.1) and aspect ratio (0.125≤AR≤8.0). The results reveal that the flow oscillations can be suppressed effectively by imposing an external magnetic field and the augmentation of Hartmann number and power-law index generally decreases the heat transfer rate. Additionally, it is observed that the average Nusselt number is increased with the increase of Rayleigh number and nanoparticle volume fraction. Moreover, the present results also indicate that there is a critical value for aspect ratio at which the impact on heat transfer is the most pronounced.

In this paper, the static analysis of functionally graded (FG) circular plates resting on linear elastic foundation with various edge conditions is carried out by using a semi-analytical approach. The governing differential equations are derived based on the three dimensional theory of elasticity and assuming that the mechanical properties of the material vary exponentially along the thickness direction and Poisson’s ratio remains constant. The solution is obtained by employing the state space method (SSM) to express exactly the plate behavior along the graded direction and the one dimensional differential quadrature method (DQM) to approximate the radial variations of the parameters. The effects of different parameters (e.g., material property gradient index, elastic foundation coefficients, the surfaces conditions (hard or soft surface of the plate on foundation), plate geometric parameters and edges condition) on the deformation and stress distributions of the FG circular plates are investigated.

Numerical instability may occur when simulating high Reynolds number flows by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) model of the LBM can improve the accuracy and stability, but is still subject to numerical instability when simulating flows with large single-grid Reynolds number (Reynolds number/grid number). The viscosity counteracting approach proposed recently is a method of enhancing the stability of the LBM. However, its effectiveness was only verified in the single-relaxation-time model of the LBM (SRT-LBM). This paper aims to propose the viscosity counteracting approach for the multiple-relaxation-time model (MRT-LBM) and analyze its numerical characteristics. The verification is conducted by simulating some benchmark cases: the two-dimensional (2D) lid-driven cavity flow, Poiseuille flow, Taylor-Green vortex flow and Couette flow, and three-dimensional (3D) rectangular jet. Qualitative and Quantitative comparisons show that the viscosity counteracting approach for the MRT-LBM has better accuracy and stability than that for the SRT-LBM.

The scattering of the open cavity filled with the inhomogeneous media is studied. The problem is discretized with a fourth order finite difference scheme and the immersed interface method, resulting in a linear system of equations with the high order accurate solutions in the whole computational domain. To solve the system of equations, we design an efficient iterative solver, which is based on the fast Fourier transformation, and provides an ideal preconditioner for Krylov subspace method. Numerical experiments demonstrate the capability of the proposed fast high order iterative solver.

This paper deals with the two-level Newton iteration method based on the pressure projection stabilized finite element approximation to solve the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes type variational inequality problem. We solve a small Navier-Stokes problem on the coarse mesh with mesh size H and solve a large linearized Navier-Stokes problem on the fine mesh with mesh size h. The error estimates derived show that if we choose h = O (|logh|1/2H3), then the two-level method we provide has the same H1 and L2 convergence orders of the velocity and the pressure as the one-level stabilized method. However, the L2 convergence order of the velocity is not consistent with that of one-level stabilized method. Finally, we give the numerical results to support the theoretical analysis.

The lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) is considered as a promising approach for simulating flows of liquid and gas. Most of LBE studies have been devoted to regular square LBE and few works have focused on the rectangular LBE in the simulation of gaseous microscale flows. In fact, the rectangular LBE, as an alternative and efficient method, has some advantages over the square LBE in simulating flows with certain computational domains of large aspect ratio (e.g., long micro channels). Therefore, in this paper we expand the application scopes of the rectangular LBE to gaseous microscale flow. The kinetic boundary conditions for the rectangular LBE with a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) collision operator, i.e., the combined bounce-back/specular-reflection (CBBSR) boundary condition and the discrete Maxwell's diffuse-reflection (DMDR) boundary condition, are studied in detail. We observe some discrete effects in both the CBBSR and DMDR boundary conditions for the rectangular LBE and present a reasonable approach to overcome these discrete effects in the two boundary conditions. It is found that the DMDR boundary condition for the square MRT-LBE can not realize the real fully diffusive boundary condition, while the DMDR boundary condition for the rectangular MRT-LBE with the grid aspect ratio a≠1 can do it well. Some numerical tests are implemented to validate the presented theoretical analysis. In addition, the computational efficiency and relative difference between the rectangular LBE and the square LBE are analyzed in detail. The rectangular LBE is found to be an efficient method for simulating the gaseous microscale flows in domains with large aspect ratios.
