Ergot alkaloids in endophyte-infected (Neotyphodium coenophialum) tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum) have been shown to cause a reduction in blood flow to the rumen epithelium as well as a decrease in volatile fatty acids (VFA) absorption from the washed rumen of steers. Previous data also indicates that incubating an extract of endophyte-infected tall fescue seed causes an increase in the amount of VFA absorbed per unit of blood flow, which could result from an alteration in the absorptive or barrier function of the rumen epithelium. An experiment was conducted to determine the acute effects of an endophyte-infected tall fescue seed extract (EXT) on total, passive or facilitated acetate and butyrate flux across the isolated bovine rumen as well as the barrier function measured by inulin flux and tissue conductance (Gt). Flux of ergovaline across the rumen epithelium was also evaluated. Rumen tissue from the caudal dorsal sac of Holstein steers (n=6), fed a common diet, was collected and isolated shortly after slaughter and mounted between two halves of Ussing chambers. In vitro treatments included vehicle control (80% methanol, 0.5% of total volume), Low EXT (50 ng ergovaline/ml) and High EXT (250 ng ergovaline/ml). Results indicate that there is no effect of acute exposure to ergot alkaloids on total, passive or facilitated flux of acetate or butyrate across the isolate bovine rumen epithelium (P>0.51). Inulin flux (P=0.16) and Gt (P>0.17) were not affected by EXT treatment, indicating no alteration in barrier function due to acute ergot alkaloid exposure. Ergovaline was detected in the serosal buffer of the High EXT treatment indicating that the flux rate is ~0.25 to 0.44 ng/cm2 per hour. Data indicate that specific pathways for VFA absorption and barrier function of the rumen epithelium are not affected by acute exposure to ergot alkaloids from tall fescue at the concentrations tested. Ergovaline has the potential to be absorbed from the rumen of cattle that could contribute to reduced blood flow and motility and lead to reduced growth rates of cattle.

A comparison was made of three diets given to pigs after weaning at 28 days of age: control, control + 300 g spring peas per kg or control + 300 g spring peas + 1·2 g DL-methionine per kg. The latter diet led to similar food conversion ratio and better growth rate than the control diet. It seems therefore that provided diets are properly balanced for all limiting amino acids, spring pea (Pisum sativum subsp. hortense) can be used at least up to 300 g/kg in weaned pig diets.

Twenty-seven multiparous Large White sows were used to determine the effect of season in a tropical climate and dietary fibre on their feeding behaviour during lactation. The experiment was conducted in Guadeloupe (French West Indies, latitude 16°N, longitude 61°W) between October 1999 and January 2001; climatic conditions in the farrowing room were equivalent to outdoor conditions. Two seasons were determined a posteriori from climatic criteria recorded continuously in the farrowing room. During the warm season, ambient temperature and relative humidity averaged 25°C and 0·868, respectively. The corresponding values for the hot season were 27·5°C and 0·835. Experimental diets offered during lactation were a control diet (C; 140 g neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) per kg) and a high fibre diet (HF; 200 g NDF per kg). Sows were offered food ad libitum between the 6th and the 27th day of lactation. Daily food intake between day 6 and day 27 decreased during the hot season (P < 0·001; 3226 v. 5571 g/d during the warm season). This was achieved by a reduction of both meal size (P < 0·05; 460 v. 718 g per meal) and ingestion and consumption time (P < 0·01; -11·1 and -15·3 min/day, respectively) whereas the number of meals remained constant (8·4 meals per day on average). During warm season, hourly food intake peaked twice daily near sunrise and sunset. During the hot season, peaks were attenuated and food intake was reduced during the hotter periods of the day and increased during the fresher period of the day, especially in early morning. As a result the diurnal partition of food intake was significantly affected by season; proportionately 0·62 and 0·47 of total food intake occurred during the day in warm and in hot seasons, respectively. Standing duration averaged 138 min/ day with no significant difference between seasons. Feeding behaviour criteria were not influenced by diet composition. In conclusion, the season in a humid tropical climate significantly affects the feeding behaviour of lactating sows.

The use of polynomial functions to describe the average growth trajectory and covariance functions of Nellore and MA (21/32 Charolais+11/32 Nellore) young bulls in performance tests was studied. The average growth trajectories and additive genetic and permanent environmental covariance functions were fit with Legendre (linear through quintic) and quadratic B-spline (with two to four intervals) polynomials. In general, the Legendre and quadratic B-spline models that included more covariance parameters provided a better fit with the data. When comparing models with the same number of parameters, the quadratic B-spline provided a better fit than the Legendre polynomials. The quadratic B-spline with four intervals provided the best fit for the Nellore and MA groups. The fitting of random regression models with different types of polynomials (Legendre polynomials or B-spline) affected neither the genetic parameters estimates nor the ranking of the Nellore young bulls. However, fitting different type of polynomials affected the genetic parameters estimates and the ranking of the MA young bulls. Parsimonious Legendre or quadratic B-spline models could be used for genetic evaluation of body weight of Nellore young bulls in performance tests, whereas these parsimonious models were less efficient for animals of the MA genetic group owing to limited data at the extreme ages.

More energy-efficient, readily dimmable, long-lasting and more affordable light-emitting diode (LED) lights are increasingly finding applications in poultry production facilities. Despite anecdotal evidence about the benefits of such lighting on bird performance and behavior, concrete research data were lacking. In this study, a commercial poultry-specific LED light (dim-to-blue, controllable correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4500 to 5300 K) and a typical compact fluorescent light (CFL) (soft white, CCT=2700 K) were compared with regards to their effects on growing performance, activity levels, and feather and comb conditions of non-beak-trimmed W-36 pullets during a 14-week rearing period. A total of 1280-day-old pullets in two successive batches, 640 birds each, were used in the study. For each batch, pullets were randomly assigned to four identical litter-floor rooms equipped with perches, two rooms per light regimen, 160 birds per room. Body weight, BW uniformity (BWU), BW gain (BWG) and cumulative mortality rate (CMR) of the pullets were determined every 2 weeks from day-old to 14 weeks of age (WOA). Activity levels of the pullets at 5 to 14 WOA were delineated by movement index. Results revealed that pullets under the LED and CFL lights had comparable BW (1140±5 g v. 1135±5 g, P=0.41), BWU (90.8±1.0% v. 91.9±1.0%, P=0.48) and CMR (1.3±0.6% v. 2.7±0.6%, P=0.18) at 14 WOA despite some varying BWG during the rearing. Circadian activity levels of the pullets were higher under the LED light than under the CFL light, possibly resulting from differences in spectrum and/or perceived light intensity between the two lights. No feather damage or comb wound was apparent in either light regimen at the end of the rearing period. The results contribute to understanding the impact of emerging LED lights on pullets rearing which is a critical component of egg production.

Assessment of safety and efficacy within the porcine coronary artery model remains a standard requirement for new therapies delivered to the coronary arteries before proceeding to clinical testing. Human coronary procedures carry a very low mortality rate; however, procedural mortality for porcine experiments is often high, despite these animals being young and free of atherosclerosis. Some of these deaths are due to poor technique, and therefore avoidable. However, despite the wide use of this model, a systematic description of the procedure has never been published. This article will detail how porcine angiography and stent implantation is performed in our institution and will discuss the relevant differences between humans and pigs with regard to anaesthesia, pharmacotherapy, vascular access, catheter selection and angiographic views. Important variations to the technique that have been reported are also covered.

The ease with which cattle can be handled during routine husbandry operations is a major concern to producers. Ease of handling is difficult to define but includes the case with which cattle can be moved through yards, through a race or held in a crush or scales. Few studies have attempted to measure ‘ease of handling’ of animals. ‘Temperament scores’ of cattle of various breeds, sexes and ages based on the scoring system originally described by Tulloh (1961) were recorded by Hearnshaw, Barlow and Want (1979). These scores were highly repeatable between scorers and within animals although some decline in scores occurred with repeated measurements. Hearnshaw et al. (1979) suggested that the scores were a measurement of ease of handling rather than temperament.

A basal diet was formulated to meet the nutrient requirements of growing rabbits. Another diet was formulated by substituting 152 g/kg of the basal diet with sunflower hulls (SH diet). One hundred and sixty-eight weaned 30-day-old rabbits were given these diets and finishing performance was recorded. Eighty animals were used to study the effect of SH inclusion on caecal fermentation traits at two ages (5 and 35 days after weaning) and disaccharidase activity in the small intestine at 35 days after weaning. Inclusion of SH in the diet reduced growth rate by proportionately 0·056 in the first 2 weeks after weaning (P 0 ×001), but had no effect from 14 to 65 days after weaning. Accordingly, daily gain was lower by a factor of 0·035 over the whole finishing period (P 0×01). There was no effect of treatment on food intake during the 14 days after weaning, but SH inclusion tended to increase it from this time onwards ( +0·026; P = 0 ×06) and over the whole finishing period ( + 0·018; P = 0 ×09). This effect was parallel to a 0·09 proportional decrease in the weight of caecal contents (P 0 ×01) observed in animals of 2 kg live weight. Food efficiency was lower by a factor of 0·05 (P 0×001) in all the periods considered when SH was included in the diet. Mortality rate (6%) was not affected by treatment nor was caecal pH or caecal concentrations of volatile fatty acids and ammonia nitrogen either at 5 days (5×75, 72×7 mmol/l and 16×6 mmol/l, respectively) or at 35 days after weaning (5×70, 74×3 mmol/l and 9 ×7 5 mmol/l, respectively). Inclusion of SH increased sucrase specific activity at the ileum by a factor of 0·47 (P 0×01) but had no effect on maltase specific activity at the jejunum or ileum or on sucrase specific activity at the jejunum. In conclusion, SH included at moderate levels (150 g/kg) in the diet reduced accumulation of digesta in the caecum, which increased voluntary food intake but impaired growth rate and food efficiency. Inclusion of SH did not affect caecal fermentation or mortality.

The follicle destiny towards ovulation or atresia is multi-factorial in nature and involves outcries, paracrine and endocrine factors that promote cell proliferation and survival (development) or unchain apoptosis as part of the atresia process. In several types of cells, sphingosine-1-phospate (S1P) promotes cellular proliferation and survival, whereas ceramide (CER) triggers cell death, and the S1P/CER ratio may determine the fate of the cell. The aim of present study was to quantify S1P and CER concentrations and their ratio in bovine antral follicles of 8 to 17 mm classified as healthy and atretic antral follicles. Follicles were dissected from cow ovaries collected from a local abattoir. The theca cell layer, the granulosa cells and follicular fluid were separated, and 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) concentrations were measured in the follicular fluid by radioimmunoassay. Based on the E2/P4 ratio, the follicles were classified as healthy (2.2±0.3) or atretic (0.2±0.3). In both follicular compartments (granulosa and theca cell layer), sphingolipids were extracted and S1P and CER concentrations were quantified by HPLC (XTerra RP18; 5 µm, 3.0×150 mm column). Results showed that in both follicular compartments, S1P concentrations were higher in healthy antral follicles than in atretic antral follicles (P<0.05). The concentration of CER in the granulosa cells was higher in atretic antral follicles than in healthy antral follicles, but no differences were observed in the theca cell layer. The S1P/CER ratio in both follicular compartments was also higher in healthy antral follicles. Interestingly, in these follicles, there was a 45-fold greater concentration of S1P than CER in the granulosa cells (P<0.05), whereas in the theca cell layer, S1P had only a 14-fold greater concentration than CER when compared with atretic antral follicles. These results suggest that S1P plays a role in follicle health, increasing cellular proliferation and survival. In contrast, reduction of S1P and the S1P/CER in the antral follicle could trigger cellular death and atresia.

In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.

In three separate experiments a total of 144 Greyface ewes was offered direct-cut or wilted silage from week 4 to 5 of pregnancy until lambing with varying levels of concentrate during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. Wilting resulted in a proportional increase in the intake of silage dry matter of 0·08 on average but, because digestibility of the wilted silages was lower, digestible energy intake of both silages was similar. Average change in ewe live weight from housing until after lambing was not affected by silage type and there was a small, non-significant increase in lamb birth weight on direct-cut silage. There was no evidence of any reduction in silage intake as total concentrate intake over the last 6 weeks of pregnancy increased to about 18 kg, and limited evidence of a reduction at higher levels with some indication of a greater reduction on direct-cut than on wilted silage. Compared with no-concentrate feeding the highest level increased ewe live weight by 252 g/kg concentrate and there was a non-significant effect on lamb birth weight of 13 g/kg concentrate.

Starchy grain is usually supplemented to diets containing low-quality forage to provide sufficient energy for ruminant animals. Ruminal degradation of grain starch mainly depends on the hydrolysis of the endosperm, which may be variable among grain sources. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of endosperm structure of wheat and corn on in vitro rumen fermentation and nitrogen (N) utilization of rice straw. The 3×4 factorial design included three ratios of concentrate to forage (35:65, 50:50 and 65:35) and four ratios of wheat to corn starch (20:80, 40:60, 60:40 and 80:20). The endosperm structure was detected by scanning electronic microscopy and a confocal laser scanning microscopic. An in vitro gas test was performed to evaluate the rumen fermentation characteristics and N utilization. Starch granules were embedded in the starch–protein matrix in corn, but more granules were separated from the matrix in the wheat endosperm. With the increasing ratio of wheat, rate and extent of gas production, total volatile fatty acids, and ammonia N increased linearly (P<0.01), but microbial protein concentration decreased (quadratic, P<0.01), with the maximum value at a ratio of 40% wheat. The efficiency of N utilization decreased linearly (P<0.01). Rumen fermentation and N utilization were significantly affected by the concentrate-to-forage ratio (P<0.01). Significant interactions between the concentrate-to-forage ratio and the wheat-to-corn ratio were detected in total volatile fatty acids and the efficiency of N utilization (P<0.01). In summary, the starch–protein matrix and starch granules in the wheat and corn endosperm mixture play an important role in the regulation of rumen fermentation and N utilization under low-quality forage.

This study investigated the efficiency of growth and the carcass characteristics of 24 Greyface (Border Leicester × Scottish Blackface), 24 Texel (12 purebred and 12 Texel × Texel-Greyface) and 24 Rouge (12 purebred and 12 Rouge × Rouge-Greyface) lambs finished on the same level of feeding. The efficiency of live-weight gain (kg/MJ) was higher in Greyface compared with Texel lambs (P < 0·01). The efficiency of empty body-weight gain (kg/MJ) was higher in Greyface (P < 0·01) and Rouge (P < 0·05) compared with Texel lambs. The efficiency of carcass gains (kg/MJ) tended to be higher in Greyface and Rouge compared with Texel lambs (P = 0·07). The efficiency of non-carcass component gains (kg/MJ) was also higher in Greyface compared with Texel lambs (P 0·05). Carcass water, protein, lipid and ash gains did not vary significantly between the genotypes, however carcass energy gain tended to be higher in Greyface and Rouge compared with Texel lambs (P = 0·08). The relative proportions of water, protein, lipid and ash in carcass gains did not vary significantly between the genotypes. At the end of the experiment carcass water content was higher in Texel compared with Greyface lambs (P < 0·05) and carcass ash content was lower in Texel compared with Greyface (P < 0·01) and Rouge (P < 0·05) lambs. The concentration of saturated fatty acids was higher in Greyface compared with Rouge lambs (P < 0·001) and higher in Rouge compared with Texel lambs (P < 0·05). Monounsaturated fatty acid concentrations were higher in Rouge compared with Greyface lambs (P < 0·05) and higher in Texel compared with Rouge lambs (P < 0·001). Polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations were higher in Rouge and Texel compared with Greyface lambs (P < 0·01). The ratio of n-6:n-3 fatty acids was lower in Rouge compared with Greyface lambs (P < 0·05).

The efficiency of empty body gain was higher in male compared with female lambs (P < 0·05). Carcass water (P < 0·01) and protein (P < 0·05) gains were higher in male lambs. At the end of the experiment male carcasses contained a higher content of water (P < 0·05), protein (P < 0·01) and ash (P = 0·07), and a lower lipid (P < 0·05) and energy (P < 0·001) content. Carcass lipids from male lambs contained a higher concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (P < 0·001) and tended to contain a lower concentration of saturated fatty acids (P = 0·06).

Echinacea pallida (EPAL), a herbaceous flowering plant with immunomodulatory properties, has been chosen to determine the pre- and post-supplementary effects on the growth performances, bacterial community, blood parameters and immunity of growing rabbits. The same Grimaud does (14-week-old) from the studied in the first part of this study were randomly divided into two groups (n=50/group). The first group was fed a basal diet without supplementation (Control group, C) while the another group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 3 g EPAL/kg diet (Echinacea group, E). From the second parturition, 80 weaned kits (40 from the C does and 40 from the E does) were randomly assigned to four groups of 20 animals each and were fed a growing commercial diet supplemented with or without a 3 g EPAL/kg diet: the CC group (rabbits from the C does fed the control diet), CE group (rabbits from the C does fed the supplemented diet), EC (rabbits from the E does fed the control diet) and EE group (rabbits from the E does fed the supplemented diet). The dietary EPAL treatment did not affect the growth performance. Ten fattening rabbits from each group were selected to evaluate the bacterial community and blood parameters, while the remaining rabbits (n=10/group) were used to study phagocytosis and the humoral immune response. The variability was evaluated from hard faeces at 35, 49 and 89 days, and the caecal content at 89 days. The variability of the bacterial community of the EE group was higher than that of the other groups. The phagocytic activity was higher in the CE and EE groups than in the CC and EC ones (30.9 and 29.7 v. 21.2 and 21.8%; P<0.05), whereas no statistically significant difference was observed for the blood parameters or humoral immune response against vaccination (rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus) at 95 days old which the serum was collected at 88, 102, 109, 116 and 123 days old. In conclusion, no impact of EPAL dietary supplementation has been observed on the growth performances, bacterial community, blood parameters or humoral immune responses in growing rabbits, except for an increase in phagocytic activities.

A total of 1754 records for litter traits of 458 D'man ewes sired by more than 45 rams were analysed to estimate repeatability, heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlations. Repeatability estimated by the intraclass correlation method was 0·11, 0·11, 0·12 and 0·15 for litter sizes at birth and at weaning and litter weights at birth and at weaning, respectively. Paternal half-sib estimates of heritability were 0·09 (s.e. 0·06), 0·04 (s.e. 0·05), 0·15 (s.e. 0·07) and 0·08 (s.e. 0·05), respectively. Genetic correlations among the traits were all positive and varied from 0·17 to 0·72, whereas phenotypic correlations ranged from 0·68 to 0·86.

The objective of this trial was to examine the daily herbage requirement and grass dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows of different levels of milk production with rotational grazing and optimum grazing conditions. The daily herbage allowance (DHA) that was required was defined as the allowance that permitted the herds to graze to a post-grazing sward height (SHA) of 70 mm. Four herds of 15 primiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were assembled with similar characteristics but different milk production potentials. The herds grazed separately and were offered a DHA such that the SHA was 70 mm for all herds. The daily yield per cow, for the 4 weeks prior to the start of the experiment (PMY), was 17·4, 19·8, 21·8 and 24·3 kg milk (s.e.0·20, P < 0·001), 0·72, 0·78, 0·87 and 0·93 kg fat (s.e. 0·021, P < 0·001), 0·59, 0·66, 0·71 and 0·77 kg protein (s.e. 0·009, P < 0·001) for herds 1 to 4, respectively. The experiment began on 30 June and finished on 16 August. The swards offered were 18-day re-growths following a previous defoliation by grazing. Herbage mass pre- and post-grazing was 2143 (s.e.33·3) and 622 (s.e.18·2) kg dry matter (DM) per ha above 40 mm, respectively and were similar for the four herds. The DHA was 21·2, 21·9, 22·9 and 23·9 (s.e. 0·13, P < 0·001) kg DM per cow above 40 mm. Individual cow grass DMI was determined once during the experimental period using the alkane technique. Experimental milk yield (EMY) was 15·1, 17·4, 18·6 and 20·8 (s.e. 0·33, P < 0·001) kg per cow per day. DMI was 14·5, 15·4, 15·5 and 16·1 (s.e. 0·47, P > 0·05). Variations in DMI were best described by the relationship: DMI = 0·85 (s.e. 3·038) + 0·32 (s.e. 0·082) ✕ EMY + 0·012 (s.e. 0·0054) ✕ experimental live weight + 2·10 (s.e. 0·738) ✕ weight gain + 0·020 (s.e. 0·0085) ✕ days in milk (residual s.d. = 1·477 and r = 0·75). EMY was linked to DMI and PMY according to the expression: EMY = –0·64 (s.e. 1·532) + 0·256 (s.e. 0·0865) ✕ DMI + 0·705 (s.e. 0·0620) ✕ PMY (residual s.d. = 1·204 and r = 0·872). It is concluded that higher yielding herds require higher DHA and this is associated with higher DMI of those herds.

Rapeseed, sunflower and soya-bean meals were compared as the main sources of protein in concentrate supplements given to dairy cattle. The supplements contained (per kg) 620 g rapeseed meal, 760 g sunflower meal or 500 g soya-bean meal and all three were formulated to contain 300 g protein per kg. Each animal was given daily TO kg dairy compound, 3·5 kg supplement, 3·5 kg sugar-beet pulp pellets and offered maize silage ad libitum. A randomized-block design with 39 cattle was used and treatments were applied for 16 weeks. All three supplements were eaten rapidly and there were no refusals. Daily mean milk yields were rapeseed 26·7, sunflower 25·3 and soya bean 25·1 (s.e.d. 1·44) kg; milk fat and protein concentrations were not affected by the treatments. There were no significant treatment differences in live weight and condition score. It was concluded that these high protein supplements based on rapeseed meal, sunflower meal and soya-bean meal were of equal feeding value for milk production.

1. Because dressing percentage increases as body weight increases, an adjustment for body weight is necessary when the dressing percentages of animals of different body weights are being compared. Instead of comparing animals on this basis, it is suggested that the power function y = axb, relating carcass weight and body weight, when computed in the logarithmic form, provides a suitable method for making adjustments of this kind.

2. Using this function, differences in yield of carcass have been shown, between breeds and between seasons, in a study involving Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and Beef Shorthorn cattle.

3. A similar function has been used to describe the relationship between fat content of carcass and carcass weight and body weight, using data from the same breed study.

Monthly and fortnightly milk production records were analysed from 59 autumn-calving Angus and Angus × Holstein crossbred cows. Half the cows had been administered 10 mg thyroxine per day from day 60 to 120 of lactation and half were controls. Four published equations to characterize individual lactation curves were compared. These were: (1) log Y(n) = log –a1 + b1log n – c1n (Wood); (2) equation 1 with each log Y(n)2 weighted by Yin)2 (Wood weighted); (3) log [Y(n)/n7 = log l/a3 – k3n(Jenkins); and (4) log Y(n) = a4 – b4n‘(l + 25·5 n’) + c4n2 = d 4/ n (Morant), where Y(n) is milk yield on day n of lactation, n' is n–110 (the mid point of lactation), and the a, b, c, k and d parameters are estimated from solution of the equations. The lactation curve from the Jenkins equation projected peak milk yield to occur some 30 days later than estimates from the other equations. It underestimated production early and late in lactation and overestimated it during mid lactation. For several cows, the Morant equation projected that peak production occurred at the end of lactation. Also, analysis of variance of milk production variables was less sensitive when the traits were estimated by the Morant equation than when they were estimated by one of the others. The Wood weighted equation resulted in estimates of peak day of lactation and peak yield that were less variable and more realistic than estimates from the Wood equation. Collectively, therefore, the Wood weighted equation was deemed most suitable to characterize variability among and within these beef cows in milk production. All four equations, however, ranked the 59 cows similarly for estimated 220-day yield.
