The objectives of the current study were to determine the degree to which space allocation in a deep-bedded system influences swine performance and pork quality. The deep-bedded method employed was hoop structures, which are large, tent-like shelters with cornstalks or straw for bedding. One hundred gilts ranging in weight from 59 to 71 kg were randomly assigned to treatments of low (0.70 m2 per pig, n = 50) or high (1.13 m2 per pig, n = 50) space allocation. During the 45-day experimental period, gilts were ad libitum fed a two-phase diet. Six gilts per treatment were used for carcass composition and pork quality evaluation for each replication. Five replications were conducted over a period of 4 months. Pigs finished with greater space allocation had smaller longissimus muscle area and produced pork that appeared to be darker. Variations in fatty acid composition and lipid percentage of subcutaneous adipose and longissimus dorsi muscle were observed when space allocation was changed within hoop structures. Less space resulted in greater proportion of lipid present as polyunsaturated fatty acids. Greater space allocation resulted in lower total lipid in subcutaneous pork adipose tissue. Space allocation did not affect fat firmness. Replications spanned the months of August to November, with temperatures ranging from 32°C to −2°C within the hoop structure. As environmental temperature declined, the proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids increased. Providing more space during finishing in these systems had only a small affect on pig growth and pork quality. Variations observed from replication to replication at fluctuating temperatures provide insight to seasonal differences in growth and adipose tissue composition and firmness. Therefore, finishing pigs in these systems may lead to seasonal variation in lipid composition.

Ground full-fat rapeseed (FFRS) and the resulting extracted oil (RSO), meal (RSM) and recombined RSO and RSM (ORSM) from a triple-low cultivar containing low levels of erucic acid, glucosinolates and tannins were evaluated. RSO, FFRS and ORSM were included into a basal diet to give levels of added oil of 40, 80 and 120g/kg. RSM was also incorporated into the basal diet at the same rates as in ORSM. The 12 experimental diets together with the basal diet were given to 13 gilts in a metabolism trial conducted over four time periods. A 10-day acclimatization in holding pens preceded a 5-day total collection of faeces and urine in metabolism crates. Rapeseed products, diets, faeces and urine were analysed for gross energy (GE) and all, except urine, for oil content measured by two methods (petroleum ether and acid hydrolysis prior to ether extraction). Apparent digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of rapeseed products were determined by single-level assay and by regression. Oil DE was also derived indirectly as a product of apparent oil digestibility (AOD) and oil GE. Apparent nitrogen digestibility was estimated for diets and rapeseed products. The response of dietary DE, ME and AOD to rates of test material inclusion was linear (P < 0·001) in all cases except for ORSM and RSM the DE and ME of which, in addition, showed evidence of curvilinearity. Age of pig had no significant effect on dietary AOD and energy values. Linear regression techniques were better than single level assays (particularly at low rates of inclusion) in determining energy values and gave DE values of 42·4, 190, 14·6 and 25·8 MJ/kg dry matter for RSO, FFRS, RSM and ORSM respectively. Oil DE and AOD were not influenced by method of evaluation. The results of this study indicated improved energy values for FFRS and RSM of a triple-low cultivar over published data for high-glucosinolate varieties but not over data for double-low varieties. In addition it appears that AOD is the main factor determining dietary utilization of FFRS and would need to be considered in order to optimize the nutritive value of FFRS in diets for growing pigs.

Forty Assaf fattening lambs (initial age 13 to 15 weeks) offered a diet of barley straw and a commercial concentrate were used to assess the effect of naringin (a type of citrus flavonoid with proven antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in monogastric animals) at a dose of 1.5 g/kg per dry matteron plasma lipid peroxidation thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), immune response, ruminal bacterial community and protection provided by the ruminal wall against subclinical acidosis. After 49 days of the experimental diets, lambs were subjected to a 4-h transportation stress period. As expected, TBARS values were significantly increased in all the lambs just after the transportation period, but no effect of naringin was observed. Although naringin lowered red blood cell count, neither the total white blood cells counts nor the production of IFN-γ were affected by naringin. No anti-inflammation activity preventing rumenitis was detected, but a clear effect on ruminal bacterial community was observed in lambs consuming naringin. Further experiments, using different doses of naringin might show health benefits of naringin supplementation in lambs, but a clear beneficial effect on health was not readily apparent in this study.

Bioethanol production has led to the production of considerable quantities of different coproducts. Variation in nutrient profiles as well as nutrient availability among these coproducts may lead to an imbalance in the formulation of diets. The objectives of this study were to fractionate protein and carbohydrates by an in situ approach, to determine ruminal availability of nutrients for microbial protein synthesis and to determine protein availability to dairy cattle for three types of dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS; 100% wheat DDGS (WDDGS); DDGS blend1 (BDDGS1, corn to wheat ratio 30 : 70); DDGS blend2 (BDDGS2, corn to wheat ratio 50 : 50)) and for different batches within DDGS type using the 2010 DVE/OEB protein evaluation system. The results indicated that all DDGS types are quantitatively good sources of true protein digested and absorbed in the small intestine (DVE values; 177, 184 and 170 g/kg dry matter (DM) for WDDGS, BDDGS1 and BDDGS2, respectively). Rumen degraded protein balances (OEB) values were 159, 82, 65 g/kg DM in WDDGS, BDDGS1 and BDDGS2, respectively. Despite the differences in ruminal availability of nutrients among the different batches of DDGS, the DVE values only differed between the batches of BDDGS1 (194 v. 176 g/kg DM). In conclusion, when DDGS is included in the rations of dairy cattle, variation in its protein value due to factors such as DDGS batch should be taken into consideration.

Lupine seeds have the potential to be an alternative to imported dietary proteins. In rabbits, it has been indicated that White lupine seed (WLS) is a suitable protein source. Other lupine species, for example, narrow-leaved lupine seed (NLS), have not yet been tested in rabbit diets. Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of the dietary inclusion of NLS on growth performance, sanitary risk index (SRI), coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) and nitrogen output in fattening rabbits. Narrow-leaved lupine was compared with WLS as a main protein source. For Experiment I, a total of 198 Hyplus rabbits (37 days of age) were allocated into two groups (99 rabbits per group), fed the WLS I diet (120 g/kg of WLS cv. Amiga) or the NLS I diet (150 g/kg of NLS cv. Probor), and used for performance and carcass trait evaluations. In addition, the CTTAD of the diets and the nitrogen output were determined in 10 Hyplus rabbits per treatment (37 days of age). For Experiment II, a total of 180 Hyplus rabbits (32 days of age) were allocated into two groups (90 rabbits per group), fed the WLS II diet (120 g/kg of WLS cv. Amiga) or the NLS II diet (130 g/kg of NLS cv. Primadona), and used for performance and carcass trait evaluations. In addition, the CTTAD of the diets was determined in 10 Hyplus rabbits per treatment (32 days of age). Regardless of the treatment, the dietary inclusion of NLS had a negative effect on growth of the rabbits. The nitrogen excretion and coefficients of nitrogen retention of rabbits were not affected by the treatments. In Experiment I, SRI (37 to 80 days of age) was higher in rabbits fed the NLS I diet than in those fed the WLS I diet (38.4% v. 23.2%, respectively; P = 0.031). Similarly, in Experiment II (32 to 74 days of age), SRI was higher in rabbits fed the NLS II diet than in rabbits fed the WLS II diet (37.8% v. 23.3%, respectively; P = 0.052). In conclusion, regardless of the variety, the dietary inclusion of NLS had no negative effect on the nitrogen output or dressing-out percentage of rabbits when compared to those of rabbits fed the WLS diets. With respect to the SRI and performance, however, NLS did not provide a satisfactory outcome.

One hundred and thirty-two ewes of the Merino (M), Finn × Merino (FLXM), Border Leicester × Merino (BLXM), Bleu de Maine × Merino (BMXM), Texel × Merino (TXM), Cheviot × Merino (ChXM) and Merino Landsheep × Merino (MLXM) were evaluated for efficiency of lamb production. Individual food intakes of every ewe and also of her lamb(s) were determined over a complete production cycle. Efficiency of lamb production (kg lamb marketed at 35 kg live mass per kg food consumed by the ewe and her lamb(s)) indicated that the FLXM was the most efficient, followed by the TXM, Merino, MLXM, BLXM, ChXM and the BMXM was the least efficient. No significant differences (P < 0·05) were found between genotypes for efficiency of lamb production for ewes producing and rearing singletons until 35 kg live mass with ewe mass included as a covariate. Efficiency of wool production of the Merino was significantly (T < 0·001) higher than that of the other crosses. These results emphasize the importance of reproduction traits in improving efficiency of lamb production.

Seventy-eight Beulah (BH) and 78 Welsh Mountain (WM) wether lambs (mature live weights (MLW) 60 and 70 kg respectively), were used to investigate genotypic differences in performance and compensatory growth during the post-weaning period. After an initial slaughter of 12 of each breed, a complete straw-based pelleted diet (122 g crude protein and 10·4 Mj metabolizable energy per kg dry matter (DM)) was offered ad libitum to a further 29 of each which were slaughtered at a range of live weights between proportionately 0·35 andl -00 of ML W. As well as these groups undergoing normal growth (NG), the remaining lambs were given the same diet at a level sufficient to maintain constant live weight (LW) for 3 months. Eight of each breed were then slaughtered and the remaining 29 of each offered the diet ad libitum for a period of post-restricted growth (PRG); these 29 were also slaughtered between 0·35 and 1·00 of MLW. During the periods of ad libitum food supply, voluntary food intake was greater in BH than WM lambs (BH: 38·3, WM: 35·3 g DM per kg LW, P < 0·01) and during PRG as compared with NG although this result was due to a response only in WM lambs (NG - BH: 38·0, PRG-BH: 38·5, NG - WM: 33·3, PRG - WM: 37·2 g DM per kg LW, breed × pattern of food supply interaction, P < 0·05). Daily live-weight gain (LWG) was greater during PRG than NG in both breeds (NG: 3·15, PRG: 4·80 g/kg LWper day, P < 0·05). This effect was greatest in the first 8 weeks of growth but persisted into the period 16 weeks to maturity. WM lambs had overall slightly leaner carcasses and a lower proportion of protein in the fleece-free empty body than BH when compared at the same proportion of MLW; particularly during PRG. The protein in the carcass-weight gain (CWG) was greater in WM lambs during PRG than during NG (NG: 98, PRG: 123 g/kg, P < 0·05), but did not differ significantly in BH (NG: 106, PRG: 118 g/kg). The proportion of fat in CWG was concomitantly smaller during PRG. There are thus breed differences in the performance and carcass composition of lambs during compensatory growth. Genotypes to be finished by continuous feeding or a regimen incorporating food restriction should be carefully chosen for date offinishing in relation to desired carcass composition.

Salers are a native French breed used for beef and dairy production that has expanded to all the continents. The Salers breed was introduced to the north of Spain in 1985 with only 15 individuals from France and has successfully increased to over 20 000 animals. Although over time new animals have been imported from France for breeding, it is possible that the limiting number of founder animals could have resulted in a reduction of the genetic diversity found in Spanish Salers. Thus, the purpose of the present study has been to characterize the genetic diversity of Salers breed in Spain and evaluate a possible founder effect due to reduced number of the first reproducers. A total of 403 individuals from 12 Salers herds were analyzed using 12 microsatellite markers and compared with phylogenetically and geographically close related Blonde d’Aquitaine, Limousin and Charolais French breeds but also other 16 European breeds. Microsatellites in Salers were polymorphic, with a mean allelic richness of 5.129 and an expected heterozygosity of 0.621 across loci (0.576 to 0.736 among all breeds). Average observed heterozygosity was 0.618. All the loci fit the Hardy–Weinberg (HW) equilibrium except TGLA227 locus due to a significant deficit of heterozygotes in only one of the herds, probably attributable to a sampling effect. When all loci were combined, Salers inbreeding coefficient did not differ statistically from 0 (FIS=0.005), indicating not significant excess or deficit of heterozygotes (P=0.309). Based in allelic distribution, Salers revealed a frequency of 0.488 in BM2113-131 and 0.064 in BM2113-143 diagnostic alleles, which are specific to the African zebu. These zebu alleles are also found in some French breeds, supported by STR data previously postulated hypothesis of a migration route through Mediterranean route by which North African cattle may have left a genetic signature in southern Europe. Phylogenetic tree and population structure analyses could unambiguously differentiate Salers cattle from the other populations and 10% of the total genetic variability could be attributed to differences among breeds (mean RST=0.105; P<0.01). Mutation-drift equilibrium tests (sign test and Wilcoxon’s sign rank test) were in correspondence to the absence of founder effect when Bonferroni was applied. Gene diversity previously reported in French Salers was comparable with the observed in our population. Thus, high genetic diversity in Spanish Salers highlights the resources of this population, which looks toward future breeding and selection programs.

The relationship between carcass and meat quality research and industry requirements is examined with reference to changes in consumer demand.

It is argued that much applied research has not focused sharply enough on commercial requirements and that technology transfer has been slow. But there are signs that the pace of future development will be faster, associated with a reorientation of research objectives. The three key factors stimulating change are as follows.

(1) Increasing demand by retailers for a consistent product (a demand enforced by the buying power of the major multiple grocers).

(2) The reappraisal by breeders of selection objectives.

(3) Recent developments in sensor technology and the exploitation of information technology at the producer-processor interface.

The implications of each of these are discussed.

Driven by these factors research will be targeted increasingly on integrated systems from production to consumption, aimed at specific markets setting different balances between production costs and quality. These will be blueprints for best operating practices and the ‘state of the art’ against which new research developments will be evaluated.

Throughout the review, emphasis is placed on the importance of good communication between research workers and industry to confront change and realize the opportunities created.

The macroscopically measured thickness of the skin of bacon-weight pigs has been found to differ between entire boars and castrates. The histological analysis showed that this difference can be attributed to a significantly stronger development of the dermis in the boars compared with the castrates.

The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for preweaning traits and their relationship with reproductive, productive and morphological traits in alpacas. The data were collected from 2001 to 2015 in the Pacomarca experimental farm. The data set contained data from 4330 females and 3788 males corresponding to 6396 and 1722 animals for Huacaya and Suri variants, respectively. The number of records for Huacaya and Suri variants were 5494 and 1461 for birth weight (BW), 5429 and 1431 for birth withers height (BH), 3320 and 896 for both weaning weight (WW) and average daily gain (DG) from birth to weaning, 3317 and 896 for weaning withers height (WH), and 5514 and 1474 for survival to weaning. The reproductive traits analyzed were age at first calving and calving interval. The fiber traits were fiber diameter (FD), standard deviation of FD (SD), comfort factor and coefficient of variation of FD and the morphological traits studied were density, crimp in Huacaya and lock structure in Suri, head, coverage and balance. Regarding preweaning traits, model of analysis included additive, maternal and residual random effects for all traits, with sex, coat color, number of calving, month–year and contemporary group as systematic effects, and age at weaning as linear covariate for WW and WH. The most relevant direct heritabilities for Huacaya and Suri were 0.50 and 0.34 for WW, 0.36 and 0.66 for WH, 0.45 and 0.20 for DG, respectively. Maternal heritabilities were 0.25 and 0.38 for BW, 0.18 and 0.32 for BH, 0.29 and 0.39 for WW, 0.19 and 0.26 for WH, 0.27 and 0.36 for DG, respectively. Direct genetic correlations within preweaning traits were high and favorable and lower between direct and maternal genetic effects. The genetic correlations of preweaning traits with fiber traits were moderate and unfavorable. With morphological traits they were high and positive for Suri but not for Huacaya and favorable for direct genetic effect but unfavorable for maternal genetic effect with reproductive traits. If the selection objective was meat production, the selection would have to be based on the direct genetic effect for WW but not on the maternal genetic effect that has been shown to have less relevance. Other weaning traits such as WH or DG would be indirectly selected.

Records of beef cows on a ranch in south-east Mexico gave 1377 ages at first calving (AFC) and 3932 calving intervals (CI) for the comparison by least-squares analysis of the genetic groups: commercial zebu (CZ), Brahman, other zebu breeds and their zebu crosses (zebu), F, crosses born to zebu dams by Bos taunts or Santa Gertrudis sires, and 3/4 bred zebu and 3/4 Bos taurus. Subsamples of 1090 ages at first calving and 3154 intervals were analysed considering the breed groups: CZ, Brahman, Guzerat, Gyr and Indo-brazil, and the F1 crosses resulting from matings between these zebu breeds, Santa Gertrudis and Charolais as sire breeds and the CZ as the dam breed. Three populations were analysed for each model, the original ranch population and two populations reduced by retrospective culling. The original population had a mean AFC and CI of 1226 and 489 days respectively reduced by the first and second culling by 24 and 37 days and by 62 and 83 days respectively. Repeatability of CI increased from 0·06 to 0·11 and 0·14 respectively.

Genetic group significantly influenced AFC. In the original population F1 heifers had a significantly younger AFC than Brahman and zebu heifers but not significantly younger than the other genetic groups. Heifers with 0·25, 0·75 and 1·00 zebu genes did not have significantly different AFCs. After the retrospective culling only the 3/4 bred zebus were significantly superior to the worst group, the zebus. The effect of breed group was only significant in the original population but generally the same rank order was maintained after the retrospective culling. F, Charolais × CZ heifers had the youngest AFC, a superiority of 67 days over CZ and 92 days over Brahman. Purebred zebus and their F, crosses with CZ did not calve earlier than CZ dams. Genetic group had a highly significant effect on CI. Females with 0·50 and 0·75 Bos taurus genes had shorter CIs than females with 0·75 and 1·00 zebu genes. The superiority was maintained after culling. Breed group had a significant effect in each population. F1 Charolais × CZ dams had the shortest CI. CZ had equivalent or shorter CI than all zebu breeds and their F1 crosses with CZ. Heterosis effects for AFC and CI in the zebu crosses were generally advantageous but small, while the heritabilities for the zebu population were negative for AFC and 0·05, 0·22 and 0·06 for CI in the original and two culled populations respectively.

During two experimental periods, eight non-lactating, rumen fistulated Simmental cows were given 2 kg/day of a cereal based concentrate and fescue hay ad libitum. The hay differed in neutral-detergent fibre concentration (LNDF: low; HNDF: high) and physical form (L: long; C: coarsely chopped). The rumen degradability of the dietary ingredients and of an extracted soya-bean meal was studied using the polyester-bag method.

The estimated effective rumen degradability <DG) of dry matter (DM) was significantly higher for LNDF than for HNDF hay (0·490 v. 0·401; P < 0·01). The DM DG of the extracted soya-bean meal and the dietary concentrate were higher when incubated with LNDF than with HNDF diets (0·630 v. 0·581, P < 0·05, and 0·541 v. 0·514, respectively).

Chopping the hay significantly increased the daily DM intake for HNDF diets (from 9·9 to 11·6 kg; P < 0·05), while no statistical differences were found between the other diets (10·2 and 9·6 kg, respectively for L-LNDF and C-LNDF diets). Cows given HNDF hay drank less water (42·4 v. 51·7 I/day) and total water consumption, expressed per unit of DM intake, was lower for the HNDF diets (4·1 v. 5·3 I/kg DM; P < 0·01).

Dietary treatments did not affect the estimated rumen turn-over rate of hay (0·027 per h on average, k1), hay post-rumen turn-over rate (0·069 per h on average, k2) or the estimated rumen liquid turn-over rate (0·100 per h on average, kj. The calculated outflow from the rumen was lower for the HNDF diets (159·4 v. 198·7 I/day). The daily amount of estimated saliva secreted did not differ between treatments, although saliva expressed per kg DM intake was significantly lower for the HNDF diets (10·8 v. 14·8 I/kg DM; P < 0·05).

The HNDF diets gave a lower post-feeding rumen pH (6·29 v. 6·58; P < 0·01), a higher concentration of n-butyrate (9·58 v. 8·32 mmol/l; P < 0·05) and a lower concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) (80·5 v. 128·5 mg/l; P < 0·05). Of the C4 and C5 iso-acids, the rumen liquid from cows given HNDF diets had significantly lower concentrations of isobutyrate, isovalerate and n-valerate (P < 0·01). Hay physical form did not affect rumen pH, NH3-N and volatile fatty acid concentrations.

Using data on age at 100 kg of three pig breeds (Large White, Landrace and Duroc) the connectedness between herds in China was evaluated by the connectedness rating (CR) method. The results show that most herds in China have low average CR (0–3.59%) with other herds. In Large White, of the 36 herds analyzed there are 20 herds, which are connected with at least one other herd. In Landrace and Duroc, of the 27 and 18 herds analyzed, only four and five herds, respectively, were found having connectedness with other herds. Generally, the connectedness exists only among two or few herds in the same region. A certain degree of connectedness between herds is a precondition for cross-herd genetic evaluation. A national or regional cross-herd genetic evaluation is not practicable at the present time in China. More intense efforts are needed to establish and enhance the connectedness between herds by means of extensively using artificial insemination (AI) in the swine industry in China.

A total of 24 castrated male Creole were used for digestibility studies on three sugarcane (SC) products: final molasses, SC juice and ground SC. Digestibility of macronutrients were determined in three consecutive experimental trials between 35 and 60 kg BW. The first trial measured the effect of a constant rate of incorporation of those SC products in a control diet (23% on a dry matter (DM) basis) on digestibility of energy and nutrients. The second and the third trials were designed to determine the effects of increasing rates of inclusion of SC juice and ground SC in the control diet on the digestibility of nutrients and energy. The DM content of molasses, SC juice and ground SC were 74.3%, 19.3% and 25.8%, respectively. Free sugar contents were 73.8%, 81.6% and 51.5% of DM for molasses, SC juice and ground SC, respectively. In contrast with molasses and SC juice, NDF content of ground SC was very high (40.3% DM). Energy digestibility coefficients (DC) were 99.0% and 83.6% for SC juice and molasses, respectively. For ground SC, amounts and composition of intakes differed from feed allowance as a consequence of chewing-then-spitting out most of the fibrous contents of ground SC. Expressed as a percentage of energy intake and energy allowance, DC of energy for ground SC were 68.6% and 31.9%, respectively. On an intake basis, digestible energy (DE) and metabolisable energy (ME) values were higher for SC juice (17.3 and 17.2 MJ/kg DM, respectively) than for molasses (13.1 and 12.6 MJ/kg DM, respectively) or ground SC (12.3 and 11.8 MJ/kg DM, respectively). On an allowance basis, the corresponding values for ground SC were only 5.7 and 5.6 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The gradual inclusion rate of SC juice in the diet up to 66% resulted in a linear increase of the DC of the diet organic matter and energy (P < 0.001) by 0.10% per 1% in SC juice DM. On the other hand, the partial substitution of the control diet by ground SC up to 74% resulted in a linear (P < 0.05) reduction of digestibility of nutrients and energy. Each 1% increase of ground SC incorporation rate resulted in a 0.13% and 0.61% linear decrease of DC of the energy, expressed as a percentage of energy intake or energy allowance, respectively. In conclusion, our study provides updated energy values of SC products usable as energy sources for feeding pigs.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of cyadox on endocrine hormones and growth factor in pigs. Forty-eight crossbred pigs (35±7 days) were randomly allotted to one of four treatments, with six replicate pens per treatment and two pigs per pen. Pigs were offered one of four diets including a control diet or the control diet supplemented with cyadox at either 25, 50 or 100 mg/kg for 8 weeks. Growth performance data and serum were collected every 2 weeks. Serum epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin, thyroid hormones (tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)), and cortisol concentrations were determined. Results indicated that average daily gain (ADG) and gain/food ratio increased linearly and quadratically with increasing cyadox levels. The treatment containing cyadox at 50 mg/kg improved ADG by proportionately 0·241 and food efficiency by 0·25 ( P<0·05) during the entire experiment. In our study, EGF (during weeks 4 to 8), insulin (during weeks 4 to 6), thyroid hormones (in week 4) concentrations increased quadratrically ( P<0·05) and the cortisol concentrations (in week 4) decreased linearly ( P<0·01) with increasing supplementation of cyadox. Pigs given 50 mg/kg cyadox diet had greater ( P<0·05) EGF concentrations than pigs on other diets throughout the experiment. An increase (proportionately 0·22) in serum insulin concentrations in cyadox group was also observed ( P<0·05) in week 4. From week 2 to week 4, the T4 concentrations of cyadox group increased by 50% ( P<0·05). Moreover, feeding cyadox to pigs elevated their serum T3 concentrations ( P<0·05) in the 4th week and 8th week. The cortisol concentrations of cyadox group were decreased ( P<0·05) in week 4. These results suggest that cyadox improve pig performance by altering concentrations of peripheral metabolic hormones and growth factor.

Two experiments determined the effects of daily oral supplements of vitamin A (retinol) and injected preparations of vitamin A on liver vitamin A concentration and plasma carotenoid (PC) concentration. Vetade is an oily injectable vitamin A preparation, while Nov-a-Vit is an aqueous injectable vitamin A preparation. Angus crossbred heifers were used in experiment 1 and Angus and Simmental crossbred steers were used in experiment 2. All cattle grazed pasture but were given also 1 kg per head of pellets daily and vitamin A supplements were included in the pellets when required. In experiment 1, one group of heifers was given 1 × 106 i.u. vitamin A per head daily for 31 days, while a second group in another part of the paddock was not supplemented with vitamin A. A third group of heifers grazed with this latter group and was injected with 2·5 × 106 i.u. vitamin A (Vetade) three times weekly. The oral vitamin A supplement proportionately reduced plasma and liver carotenoid concentrations by 0·49 and 0·41 respectively, while increasing liver vitamin A concentration three-fold. By contrast, the Vetade failed to increase liver vitamin A concentration or to reduce liver and plasma carotenoid concentrations. In experiment 2, two groups of steers were injected twice weekly for 7 weeks with 2 × 106 i.u. vitamin A as Nov-A-Vit or as Vetade. A third treatment group, grazing with these steers, received no vitamin A injection, while a fourth group grazing in a separate area of the paddock was supplemented daily with 1 × 106 i.u. vitamin A per head in their diet. The injection of Nov-A-Vit and the oral vitamin A supplement decreased PC concentration by a similar amount but the increase in liver vitamin A concentration was larger for steers injected with Nov-A-Vit. Vetade injections failed to increase liver vitamin A concentration and there was no decrease in PC concentration. The plasma cholesterol concentration for the treatment groups varied over the duration of the experiment but could not be related to the vitamin A treatment or to the changes in PC concentration. These results indicate that vitamin A injections can be used to reduce PC concentration provided they increase liver vitamin A concentration.

The present study was designed to examine the pattern of changes in plasma leptin concentration during the early stage of young ruminants. Five crossbred lambs weaned at 45 days were housed individually in pens. The lambs were offered timothy hay, rolled barley and soya-bean meal to meet a 200 g daily gain, and were given free access to water and mineral block. Blood samples were collected just before the morning feeding and at 30-min intervals for 6 h after the morning feeding beginning at 0·5 months after weaning and thereafter monthly for the next 6 months. Plasma leptin level increased dramatically from 0·5 to 3 months after weaning. Thereafter, it dropped to a similar level to that at 2 months after weaning and remained at that level. Moreover, plasma leptin level was not affected by feeding, and no variation throughout the day of sampling was observed. Plasma insulin levels showed similarity to changes in plasma leptin levels. Plasma insulin levels were positively correlated (r = 0·63) with plasma leptin levels. This study shows that plasma leptin level dramatically increases after weaning. Additionally, it suggests that insulin contributes to the increase of leptin with growth in lambs.

Morphometry has proven to be a useful tool, both for the clinician and horse owners, for evaluating the body condition in equids due to its objectivity, easiness and capacity for detection of important metabolic disturbances. However, limited information is available on the use of morphometric ratios to characterize regional and overall adiposity and much less about their application in different genders, ages and horses with different levels of obesity. The objectives were to evaluate body and neck absolute measurements and ratios; factors affecting them such as the influence of gender, age, appearance of the neck crest and overall body condition and; relationships among these measurements. A total of 154 Andalusian horses classified according to their gender, age, body score status and cresty neck condition were evaluated in this cross-sectional study. Two evaluators assigned a body condition score (BCS, 1 to 9) and a cresty neck score (CNS, 0 to 5) to each horse. Horses were divided into males and females; young (2 to 5 years) and adults (6 to 15 years); obese (BCS⩾7) and non-obese (BCS<7); cresty neck (CNS⩾3) and non-cresty neck horses (CNS<3). Morphometric measurements (cm) included were: height at the withers (HW); body length (BL), girth (GC) and waist (WC) circumferences; neck length (NL); three neck circumferences (NCs), over the first (NC25%), the second (NC50%) and the third part (NC75%) of the NL and neck crest height (NCH). These measurements were also used to calculate the following ratios: GC : HW, WC : HW, GC : BL, WC : BL, NC25% : HW, NC50% : HW, NC75% : HW, NC25% : BL, NC50% : BL, NC75% : BL, NC25% : NL, NC50% : NL, NC75% : NL, NC25% : NCH, NC50% : NCH and NC75% : NCH. The results showed that most of the absolute measurements and ratios were greater than those described in other light breeds. In addition, most neck ratios were higher (P<0.050) in males than in females, however, all body ratios were greater (P<0.001) in females. Among the absolute measurements, WC in obese horses and NC25% and NC75% in cresty neck horses highlighted as higher. Either GC : HW or WC : HW and NC75% : BL were alternative surrogates for the appraisal of overall and regional adiposity in Andalusians. Several interactions were observed between the gender and adiposity scoring systems affecting the morphometric evaluation. This study establishes absolute morphometric measurements and ratios in Andalusian horses. It also highlights the variability of morphometric values and how the outcome of these can be influenced by demographic variables and the breed analyzed. Further studies are necessary to set morphometric reference values in other breeds.

In intensive feeding systems, competition may be high and social dominance may affect animal performance by changing dry matter intake (DMI) and behavioral time budgets. If competition level is maintain over time, the strategies developed by heifers of different social status are expected to differ. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare individual DMI, intake rate and eating, ruminating, lying and standing behaviors in dominant (DOM) and subordinate (SUB) pre-pubertal dairy heifers in a model study implying continuous competitive situations. A total of 16 Holstein and Jersey×Holstein pre-pubertal heifers (251±10 days old, weighing 208±14 kg; mean±SEM) were allocated into eight homogeneous dyads. Each dyad was maintained during 120 days (day 0=beginning of measurements) in pens, and received a total mixed ration from one feeder/dyad. The DOM and SUB heifers was determined (day 0, twice during the first month of the experiment and every month afterwards) by observation of the winner in agonistic interactions in each dyad after the feed was supplied. The general activity pattern (eating, ruminating, lying and standing) of each heifer was recorded by direct instantaneous scan-sampling, every 10 min for 12 h, in 7 days (days 1, 21, 35, 60, 75, 100 and 120). Individual DMI was estimated with the double marker technique, in three intervals (I=days 17-26; II=days 78-87 and III=days 112-120), while estimated intake rate (kg/min) was calculated for each interval as the DMI per total eating time. After the experiment was concluded, data of the first 5 and the last 6 h of the 12 h scan-sampling (related to the moment the feed was supplied) was grouped according to the moments of greater and lesser competition for feed on each day. During the first 5 h, where competition was expected to be highest, no differences in eating behavior were found between heifers of different social status, but DOM heifers spent more time ruminating and lying than SUB heifers, while SUB spent more time standing than DOM heifers. No differences were found on DMI between DOM and SUB, but SUB ate at a faster rate on interval II compared with DOM heifers. In conclusion, in this model study of heifer dyads, SUB heifers had greater intake rate with no differences in feed intake, spent less time ruminating and lying, and more time standing than DOM heifers during the first hours after feed delivery.
