The effects of birth weight, maternal age and parity on survival of single lambs have been studied in a Blackface and a Welsh Mountain flock.

In both flocks the maximum survival rate was found to occur among lambs with birth weights just above the mean. Mortality increased as lambs' birth weight increased or decreased from the optimum, but was especially heavy at the lower extreme of the range of birth weights.

Mortality decreased with age of dam to 14·3% for lambs from 4- to 6-year-old Blackface ewes and to 9·4% for lambs of 3- to 4-year-old Welsh ewes. Ewes having their first lambs gave mortality rates twice as great as for the mature ewes in the same flocks. The lower chances of survival of first born lambs irrespective of dam's age accounts for the apparent trend of mortality with maternal age in the Blackface.

Changes in mortality rates associated with variation in lamb's birth weight and with the age structure of the ewe flock were estimated. Possible means of improvement of survival rate are discussed.

The objective of this study was to evaluate if a multi-sensor system (milk, activity, body posture) was a better classifier for lameness than the single-sensor-based detection models. Between September 2013 and August 2014, 3629 cow observations were collected on a commercial dairy farm in Belgium. Human locomotion scoring was used as reference for the model development and evaluation. Cow behaviour and performance was measured with existing sensors that were already present at the farm. A prototype of three-dimensional-based video recording system was used to quantify automatically the back posture of a cow. For the single predictor comparisons, a receiver operating characteristics curve was made. For the multivariate detection models, logistic regression and generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) were developed. The best lameness classification model was obtained by the multi-sensor analysis (area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC)=0.757±0.029), containing a combination of milk and milking variables, activity and gait and posture variables from videos. Second, the multivariate video-based system (AUC=0.732±0.011) performed better than the multivariate milk sensors (AUC=0.604±0.026) and the multivariate behaviour sensors (AUC=0.633±0.018). The video-based system performed better than the combined behaviour and performance-based detection model (AUC=0.669±0.028), indicating that it is worthwhile to consider a video-based lameness detection system, regardless the presence of other existing sensors in the farm. The results suggest that Θ2, the feature variable for the back curvature around the hip joints, with an AUC of 0.719 is the best single predictor variable for lameness detection based on locomotion scoring. In general, this study showed that the video-based back posture monitoring system is outperforming the behaviour and performance sensing techniques for locomotion scoring-based lameness detection. A GLMM with seven specific variables (walking speed, back posture measurement, daytime activity, milk yield, lactation stage, milk peak flow rate and milk peak conductivity) is the best combination of variables for lameness classification. The accuracy on four-level lameness classification was 60.3%. The accuracy improved to 79.8% for binary lameness classification. The binary GLMM obtained a sensitivity of 68.5% and a specificity of 87.6%, which both exceed the sensitivity (52.1%±4.7%) and specificity (83.2%±2.3%) of the multi-sensor logistic regression model. This shows that the repeated measures analysis in the GLMM, taking into account the individual history of the animal, outperforms the classification when thresholds based on herd level (a statistical population) are used.

The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of dietary n-3 or n-6 fatty acid (FA) supplementation on blood FA, metabolite and hormone concentrations, follicle size and dynamics and corpus luteum (CL) size. Reproductively normal heifers (n = 24) were individually fed diets of chopped straw and concentrate containing either (i) no added lipid (CON; n = 8); (ii) 2% added fat as whole raw soya beans (WSB, n-6; n = 8); or (iii) 2% added fat as fish oil (FO, n-3; n = 8). Following oestrous cycle synchronisation, blood samples were collected at appropriate times and intervals for the measurement of hormones, FAs and metabolites. On days 15 and 16 of the cycle, animals were subjected to an intravenous oxytocin challenge and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) response, measured as venous concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto PGF2α (PGFM). Dry matter intake and average daily gain were similar among treatments (P > 0.05). Plasma concentration of linoleic acid was highest on WSB (P < 0.05), while eicosapentaenoic (EPA, n-3; P < 0.0001) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, n-3; P < 0.0001) were greatest in the FO group. Plasma concentrations of arachidonic acid were higher on FO (P < 0.05) compared with CON and WSB. Plasma triglyceride concentrations increased, while β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) decreased with time on all diets (P < 0.05). There was a diet × time interaction (P < 0.01) for non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Plasma cholesterol was higher on WSB and FO (P < 0.01) compared with CON. Progesterone (P4) and oestradiol (E2) concentrations, as well as follicle growth rate and CL diameter were similar across diets (P > 0.05). There was a diet × day interaction for PGFM (P < 0.01). When corrected for systemic E2 : P4 ratio, day 15 concentrations of PGFM were higher in the WSB group at 15 and 30 min (P < 0.01) post oxytocin administration compared with CON and FO, which were similar (P > 0.05). Concentrations of PGFM on day 16 were similar for WSB and FO and were greater than CON at 15 (P < 0.01) and 45 min (P < 0.05) post oxytocin administration, and at 30 min for FO (P < 0.05). With the exception of PGFM, dietary lipid source did not affect the reproductive variables measured.

Grass silage with a dry-matter (DM) content of 253 g/kg and containing 142 g crude protein and 670 g digestible organic matter/kg DM was offered ad libitum to 56 first- and second-lactation British Friesian cows during the first 75 days post-calving. In addition the animals received supplementary concentrates containing either 95 (T1), 137 (T2), 174 (T3) or 209 (T4) g crude protein per kg fresh weight, with extracted soya bean meal being used as the protein source. All concentrates were offered at equal levels across treatments, the amounts being 8 kg for first- and 10 kg per day for second-lactation animals. The silage DM intakes recorded over the period were 514, 524, 548 and 545 ± 19·9 kg and milk outputs were 1349, 1451, 1533 and 1628 ±40·2 kg for treatments Tl to T4 respectively. The rate of live-weight change and the milk fat, solids-not-fat, protein, lactose and ash contents of the milk were not affected significantly by any of the treatments. Diet digestibilities were determined using three animals per treatment. The digestibility coefficients were for DM 0·738, 0·746, 0·776 and 0·772 ± 0·0088 and nitrogen 0·597, 0·641, 0·707 and 0·727 ±0·0126 for treatments T1 to T4 respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes of stress status in dairy goats induced to subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). The level of acute phase proteins (APPs) including haptoglobin (HP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) in plasma and their mRNA expression in liver, as well as plasma cortisol and genes expression of key factors controlling cortisol synthesis in adrenal cortex were compared between SARA and control goats. SARA was induced by feeding high concentrate diet (60% concentrate of dry matter) for 3 weeks (SARA, n=6), while control goats (Con, n=6) received a low concentrate diet (40% concentrate of dry matter) during the experimental time. SARA goats showed ruminal pH below 5.8 for more than 3 h per day, which was significantly lower than control goats (pH>6.0). SARA goats demonstrated a significant increase of hepatic HP and SAA mRNA expression (P<0.05), and the level of HP but not SAA in plasma was markedly increased compared with control (P<0.05). The level of cortisol in plasma showed a trend to increase in SARA goats (0.05<P<0.1). In adrenal cortex, mRNA expression of 17α-hydroxylase cytochrome (P45017α) (P<0.01) and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) (P<0.05) was significantly increased in SARA goats. The contents of 3β-HSD and P450 side-chain cleavage protein were increased by 58.6% and 39.4%, respectively, but did not reach the statistical significance (P>0.05). These results suggested that SARA goats experienced a certain stress status, exhibiting an increase in HP production and cortisol secretion.

Analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA)-encoding gene sequences from gut microbial ecosystems reveals bewildering genetic diversity. Some metabolic functions, such as glucose utilisation, are fairly widespread throughout the genetic spectrum. Others, however, are not. Despite so many phylotypes being present, single species or perhaps only two or three species often carry out key functions. Among ruminal bacteria, only three species can break down highly structured cellulose, despite the prevalence and importance of cellulose in ruminant diets, and one of those species, Fibrobacter succinogenes, is distantly related to the most abundant ruminal species. Fatty acid biohydrogenation in the rumen, particularly the final step of biohydrogenation of C18 fatty acids, stearate formation, is achieved only by a small sub-group of bacteria related to Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens. Individuals who lack Oxalobacter formigenes fail to metabolise oxalate and suffer kidney stones composed of calcium oxalate. Perhaps the most celebrated example of the difference a single species can make is the ‘mimosine story’ in ruminants. Mimosine is a toxic amino acid found in the leguminous plant, Leucaena leucocephala. Mimosine can cause thyroid problems by being converted to the goitrogen, 3-hydroxy-4(1H)-pyridone, in the rumen. Observations that mimosine-containing plants were toxic to ruminants in some countries but not others led to the discovery of Synergistes jonesii, which metabolises 3-hydroxy-4(1H)-pyridone and protects animals from toxicity. Thus, despite the complexities indicated by molecular microbial ecology and genomics, it should never be forgotten that gut communities contain important metabolic niches inhabited by species with highly specific metabolic capability.

The long-term genetic contributions were calculated for 219 Finnish Ayrshire bulls born between 1958 and 1964 to 707 Finnish Ayrshire bulls made available for artificial insemination and born between 1986 and 1988. Three strategies were employed:(i) using all known pedigree information; (ii) ignoring information on the dam of females; (iii) only using information on sires. Expected contributions were calculated using gene flow matrices.

The contributions from strategies 1, 2 and 3 were only 0.6 (1 and 2) or 0.7 (strategy 3) of those expected. The causes of this shortfall for strategies 2 and 3 were identified as (i) the use of an imported sire and (ii) generation skipping. For strategy 1, 0.2 of the expected pathways remained unaccounted for and were ascribed to missing pedigree information.

Of the 219 ancestors, only 86 made positive contributions to the descendants. Only 10 ancestors made contributions more than the average, and one bull accounted for 0.3 of all pathways traced on strategy 2. There was general agreement in the relative contributions of individual bulls when assessed using the three strategies.

The rate of inbreeding (ΔF) estimated by regression from 1974 to 1988 and using known pedigrees was 0.0018 per year and the average coefficients of additive genetic relationship among cohorts was increasing by 0.0030 per year. AF was estimated using the contributions calculated by strategies 1, 2 and 3 to be 0.0147, 0.0151 and 0.0125 per generation respectively. These were converted into rates per year by assuming a generation interval of 6.5 years taken from both published and new information on generation intervals in the Finnish Ayrshire population. This gave annual rates of 0.0023, 0.0023 and 0.0019. The estimates from strategy 3 were obtained without the use of any pedigree information pertaining to dams.

Thirty pelleted diets were given to broiler chickens (eight birds per diet; 21 to 35 days of age) for individual in vivo measurements of dietary net energy (NE) value, using three trials with 10 diets/trial. Amino acid formulation of diets was done on the basis of ratios to CP. NE was measured according to the body analysis method. The basal metabolism component of NE values was calculated on the basis of mean metabolic weight using a coefficient obtained in a previous experiment. Information about apparent metabolisable energy (AME) value of diets, AME corrected to zero nitrogen retention (AMEn) and digestibilities of proteins, lipids, starch and sugars was available from a previous publication. In each trial, mean NE/AME ratios of diets varied by about 6%. From the multiple regressions (n=30) expressing NE and AMEn values as functions of digestible component contents, it was deduced that the NE/AMEn ratios assigned to dietary components were 0.760, 0.862, 0.806, 0.690 and 0.602 for CP, lipids, starch, (sucrose+glucose) and fermentable sugars (α-galacto-oligosaccharides and lactose), respectively. The NE/AME ratio of CP was 0.680. Regression calculations showed that the NE values assigned to individual birds (n=240) could also be predicted with diet AMEn values (NE=0.80 AMEn; R 2=0.770) or with an equation combining AMEn value and CP/AMEn ratio (R 2=0.773). The latter ratio was found to be the only additional parameter that was significant when added in the NE regression scheme based on AMEn.

One hundred and twenty spring-born steers comprising 40 Friesians (FR), 40 Limousin × Friesians (LM), and 40 Blonde d'Aquitaine ' Friesians (BL), were reared together from shortly after birth to slaughter at a mean age of 771 days. They were at pasture in summer and were housed and offered grass silage plus concentrates in winter. All were implanted with anabolic agents. During the finishing winter, there was a 3 (breed types) ' 2 (3 or 6 kg concentrates per day) ' 2 (94 or 181 day finishing period) factorial arrangement of treatments.

Slaughter weights per day of age, carcass weights per day of age and carcass weights of FR, LM and BL were 846, 828 and 866 (s.e. 8·0) g, 464, 476 and 497 (s.e. 4·9) g and 358, 368 and 385 (s.e. 3·8) kg respectively. LM had lower carcass length, carcass depth, leg length and leg width values than FR or BL but when these measurements were expressed per kg carcass weight the values for LM and BL were similar. Both LM and BL had better carcass conformation than FR, and BL had a lower carcass fat score than either FR or LM between which there was no difference. FR, LM and BL had carcass lean, fat and higher-priced lean proportions of 634, 669 and 685 (s.e. 3·7), 185, 168 and 144 (s.e. 3·7) and 352, 361 and 361 (s.e. 1·4) g/kg respectively.

Increasing the concentrate level from 3 to 6 kg per day increased side weight by 9·6 kg (P < 0·001). This consisted of 0·6 kg bone, 3·3 kg lean and 5·7 kg fat. Extending the finishing period from 94 to 181 days increased side weight by 30·3 kg (P < 0·001). This consisted of 2·6 kg bone, 12·0 kg lean and 15·7 kg fat. Allometric regression coefficients for side lean, bone and fat weights on side weight were not significantly affected by breed type or concentrate level. The coefficients for lean, bone and fat were 0·80 (s.e. 0·04), 0·58 (s.e. 0·05) and 2·27 (s.e. 0·16) respectively. The coefficients for weights of lean in the hind-shin, fore-shin, fillet and brisket on side lean weight were 0·8 or lower. The corresponding coefficients for silverside, inside round, knuckle, rump and strip-loin were between 0·8 and 1·0 while the flank, shoulder, neck, chuck, plate, fore-rib and cube-roll had coefficients in the range 1·0 to 1·5.

In New Zealand, agriculture is predominantly based on pastoral grazing systems and animal excreta deposited on soil during grazing have been identified as a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Forage brassicas (Brassica spp.) have been increasingly used to improve lamb performance. Compared with conventional forage perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), a common forage in New Zealand, forage brassicas have faster growth rates, higher dry matter production and higher nutritive value. The aim of this study was to determine the partitioning of dietary nitrogen (N) between urine and dung in the excreta from sheep fed forage brassica rape (B. napus subsp. oleifera L.) or ryegrass, and then to measure N2O emissions when the excreta from the two different feed sources were applied to a pasture soil. A sheep metabolism study was conducted to determine urine and dung-N outputs from sheep fed forage rape or ryegrass, and N partitioning between urine and dung. Urine and dung were collected and then used in a field plot experiment for measuring N2O emissions. The experimental site contained a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture on a poorly drained silt-loam soil. The treatments included urine from sheep fed forage rape or ryegrass, dung from sheep fed forage rape or ryegrass, and a control without dung or urine applied. N2O emission measurements were carried out using a static chamber technique. For each excreta type, the total N2O emissions and emission factor (EF3; N2O–N emitted during the 3- or 8-month measurement period as a per cent of animal urine or dung-N applied, respectively) were calculated. Our results indicate that, in terms of per unit of N intake, a similar amount of N was excreted in urine from sheep fed either forage rape or ryegrass, but less dung N was excreted from sheep fed forage rape than ryegrass. The EF3 for urine from sheep fed forage rape was lower compared with urine from sheep fed ryegrass. This may have been because of plant secondary metabolites, such as glucosinolates in forage rape and their degradation products, are transferred to urine and affect soil N transformation processes. However, the difference in the EF3 for dung from sheep fed ryegrass and forage rape was not significant.

An alternative form, y = Anmce−cn, of the lactation model of Wood, y = Anbe−cn, is suggested. The new parameter, m, is the time required to achieve maximum milk yield. The correlations between non-linear parameters are reduced.

The effect of sex on carcass measurement, physico-chemical properties, nutritional value and sensory characteristics of foal meat slaughtered at 15 months was investigated. Twelve foals (six females and six males) from an extensive production system in freedom regimen were used for this study. Sex had no statistical influence on carcass measurements, chemical composition, colour parameters, textural properties, amino acid content and sensory characteristics. In contrast, there was a clear effect on the fatty acid profile of longissimus dorsi. Slaughter weight was not significantly (P > 0.05) different between sexes, although higher values were observed in male group compared with female group (194 v. 184 kg). As a consequence, this trend affected carcass weight being slightly (P > 0.05) heavier in the male group than in the female group. On the other hand, cooking loss samples from males showed significantly higher values than those from females (21.50% v. 14.96%, P < 0.05). From a nutritional point of view, the n-6/n-3 ratio in both sexes was within the recommended range for the human diet and this ratio was ostensibly different between the sexes (1.83 v. 1.36, P < 0.05, for male and female, respectively) and it showed a strong correlation (r = −0.91, P < 0.01) with C18:3n-3 content.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect on reproductive performance of varying level of concentrate supplementation with both high and medium genetic merit cows in a spring calving grass-based system of milk production. The effect of year, cow genetic merit for milk production and concentrate feeding level on milk production, body condition score, live weight, blood metabolites and dry-matter (DM) intake were studied. A repeated measures model with a factorial arrangement of genetic merit and concentrate feeding level was used to do this. Associations between these variables and pregnancy to first service (PREG1), pregnancy to first and second service (PREG12) and overall pregnancy (PREG) rates were assessed using logistic regressions for year 2.

Cows were grouped into high (HM) and medium (MM) genetic merit based on their pedigree indices for milk production (PD milk). The HM cows had a PD milk of + 276 (s.d. 100) kg, while the MM cows had mean PD milk of + 81 (s.d. 95) kg. Within genetic merit groupings, cows were assigned to one of three concentrate feeding levels; low (LC), 376 kg; medium (MC), 810 kg; and high (HC), 1540 kg of concentrate per cow per lactation. In year 1, all 78 cows were second lactation animals, while in year 2, 71 cows (previously in year 1) were third lactation and 12 second lactation. All cows calved between February and April, and were presented for rebreeding from late April until late July each year.

When treatment means were compared, genotype and concentrate feeding levels had no significant effects on reproductive performance while year was significant for most parameters. Comparing year 2 to year 1 pregnancy rate to first service (P 0•001; 37 v. 64%), pregnancy rate to first and second service (P < 0•05; 64 v. 81%), overall pregnancy rate (P < 0•05; 78 v. 92%) were lower. Also in year 2, cows had significantly higher milk yields at first insemination (36•9 v. 32•3 kg per cow per day), greater live-weight losses from calving to first insemination (-86 v. –53 kg per cow), lower live-weight gain in the 90 days after their first insemination (+ 24•6 v. + 34•2 kg per cow), higher DM intake (20•6 v. 17•3 kg DM per cow per day) and lower plasma glucose concentrations (3•18 v. 3•61 mmol/l) than in year 1.

In year 2, there were significant negative associations between the likelihood of PREG12 and both PD milk and live-weight gain in the 90 days after first insemination. The results of this study indicate that continued selection for increased milk production, resulting in greater partitioning of energy to milk production rather than body reserves will reduce reproductive performance and offering higher levels of concentrate supplementation may not alleviate this problem.

Three experiments of 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design were made with sheep or cattle given a basal diet of barley straw. Fish meal (FM) and unmolassed sugar-beet pulp (SBP) were given either separately or in combination as supplements to untreated (US) or ammonia-treated barley straw (AS) to form eight diets. The diets were given for 8 weeks in experiment 1 (24 sheep), 10 weeks in experiment 2 (24 steers) and 20 weeks in experiment 3 (32 steers and bulls). Urea was added to the shredded straw US and AS, to give a final concentration of 17 g nitrogen per kg dry matter (DM). n I experiments 1 and 3, both FM and SBP, given alone or in combination, significantly increased the DM and organic matter digestibility of urea-supplemented US, but not of AS. Ammonia treatment of straw given alone increased DM intake from 414 to 729 g/day in sheep and from 4·75 to 6·09 kg/day in cattle. All animals given US as the sole food lost body weight, but cattle gained weight when US was combined with either 50 g/kg FM or 15 g/kg SBP. It was necessary to combine the two supplements to achieve a significant gain in body weight of sheep. Although the diets based on AS promoted growth in all the animals, the body-weight gains achieved with US combined with 50 g/kg FM or 15 g/kg SBP were greater than those when AS was given as the sole food.

The study was undertaken in a Creole goat flock at INRA-Gardel in Guadeloupe, to evaluate the opportunity to use artificial selection as a means of controlling gastro-intestinal infection during early lactation. The flock grazed all year on Digitaria decumbens pastures. Faecal and blood samples were taken from kids at 11 months of age and from does at kidding before drenching (week 0) and at weeks 4 and 6 after kidding. Faecal egg counts (FEC) were estimated using a modified McMaster method. Blood samples were used to determine packed cell volume (PCV) and eosinophil concentrations (EOS) values. Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Oesophagostomum columbianum were the main strongyle species identified in faecal cultures. The data came from 1092 litters obtained from 688 does sired by 142 bucks and 413 dams. Variance and covariance components for genetic and residual effects were estimated with multivariate animal models using the restricted maximum likelihood VCE package. Repeatability and overall heritability for FEC during the post-partum period were 0·17 and 0·10±0·02. The genetic correlations between FEC and PCV were −0·56±0·11 at 4 weeks after kidding and −0·79±0·13 at 6 weeks after kidding. The genetic correlations between FEC and EOS were 0·37±0·15 at 4 weeks after kidding and 0·68±0·17 at 6 weeks after kidding. Hence, does that contributed least to pasture contamination during the postpartum period also had low EOS and high PCV breeding values. The genetic correlations between FEC measured at 11 months of age and FEC during periparturient period ranged from 0·57±0·12 to 0·76±0·16. Therefore, breeding goats for increased resistance during the post-weaning period will lead to a less marked and less persistent rise in doe FEC during early lactation. The epidemiological implications of this selection have to be quantified in terms of lower pasture contamination, lower kid parasitism, and higher milk production of does.

Two experiments were conducted to compare the performance and behaviour of lactating sows and piglets in farrowing pens with crates or multisuckling systems (group housing of sows and piglets in the second half of lactation). All sows were farrowed in commercial accommodation based on farrowing pens with crates. In experiment 1, fifteen purebred Landrace or Large White sows and litters were recorded in crates as a control (C). Three replicates of six sows and litters were recorded in a multisuckling system (M) in which the sows and litters were group-housed from 2 weeks after farrowing until weaning. Experiment 2 involved 30 Manor Meishan sows (0·25 Meishan genes). The sows and litters were arranged into three treatments and two replicates with five sows and litters in each group. Treatments comprised a control farrowing pen with crate system and two multisuckling systems differing in degree of accessibility of the piglet creep area. Multisuckling 1 (Ml) had a solid creep front with an open doorway (0·5 X 0·9 m) for piglet access. In multisuckling 2 (Ml), the lower 30 cm of the solid creep front was removed to facilitate piglet access and allow visual contact with the sows. Piglets were weaned at 31 days in experiment 1 and 29 days in experiment 2. After weaning, piglets were moved to controiled-environment, fully slatted accommodation and monitored for 7 days in experiment 1 and for 12 days in experiment 2. Mortality rate in the two systems was not significantly different. However, some piglets in the M system were crushed after grouping (0·3 and 0·2 piglets per litter in experiments 1 and 2, respectively). Growth rate was reduced in M piglets in the week after grouping (256, 184 (s.e.d. 21·4) g/day, P < 0·01 for C and M respectively in experiment 1 and 243, 150 and 209 (s.e.d. 12·2) g/day, P < 0·01 for C, Ml and Ml respectively in experiment 2) but was higher after weaning (271, 313 (s.e.d. 35·7) g/day, P > 0·05 for C and M respectively in experiment 1 and 148, 280 and 222 (s.e.d. 15·0) g/day, P < 0·01 for C, Ml and Ml respectively in experiment 2). In consequence, piglet live weight at 1 week after weaning did not differ between treatments (9·33, 9·74 (s.e.d. 0·36) kg for C and M respectively in experiment 1 and 9·30, 914 and 9·53 (s.e.d. Oil) kg for C, Ml and Ml respectively in experiment 2). Sucking behaviour of M piglets in both experiments was severely disrupted (P < 0·01) on the day of grouping and the day after grouping. Despite synchronized suckling, M litters had a high incidence of cross suckling (> 50%) throughout lactation. M piglets spent more time than C outside the creep area, even with a more open creep (Ml). The Meishan sows tended to be more docile and fought less at grouping than the white breeds (0·39 and 1-71 fights per sow per h). Immediately after weaning, C piglets spent more time fighting (8·0 and 1·0 (s.e.d. 0·99) % of time, P < 0·01 for C and M respectively in experiment 1 and 4·51, 0·09 and 0·09 (s.e.d. 019) % of time, P < 0·01 for C, Ml and M2 respectively in experiment 2). These studies demonstrate that, in a multisuckling system, piglets achieved similar overall growth rate to C piglets, since both received checks in growth at different times and for different reasons.

Indicator traits used to select pigs for increased resistance to infection or improved health must be heritable and, preferably, be associated with improved performance. We estimated the heritability of a range of immune traits and their genetic and phenotypic correlations with growth performance. We measured immune traits on 589 pigs and performance on 1941 pigs from six farms, three of which were classified as ‘high health status’ (i.e. specific pathogen-free) and three were of lower health status. All pigs were apparently healthy. Immune traits were total white blood cells (WBC), and peripheral blood mononuclear leucocyte (PBML) subsets positive for CD4, CD8α, gamma delta (γδ) T cell receptor, CD11R1 (natural killer cell marker), B cell and monocyte markers at the start and the end of standard growth performance tests. At both time points, all immune traits were moderately to highly heritable except for CD8α+ cells. At end of test, heritability estimates (h2) (±s.e.) were 0.18 (±0.11) for total WBC count. For PBML subset proportions, the heritabilities were 0.52 (±0.14) for γδ TCR+ cells, 0.62 (±0.14) for CD4+ cells, 0.44 (±0.14) for CD11R1+ cells, 0.58 (±0.14) for B cells and 0.59 (±0.14) for monocytes. Farm health status affected the heritabilities for WBC, being substantially higher on lower health status farms, but did not have consistent effects on heritabilities for the PBML subsets. There were significant negative genetic correlations between numbers and proportions of various PBML subsets and performance, at both start and end of test. In particular, the proportion of PBML cells that were CD11R1+ cells, at end of test, was strongly correlated with daily gain (rg = −0.72; P < 0.01). There were also weaker but significant negative phenotypic correlations between PBML subsets measured at end of test and performance, for γδ+ T cells, CD8α+, CD11R1+ cells, B cells or monocytes. Phenotypic correlations with daily gain were generally lower at the start of test than at the end of test. These results show that most of the major pig PBML subsets are heritable, and that systemic levels of several of these PBML subsets are genetically negatively correlated with performance. This approach provides a basis for using immune trait markers when selecting boars that can produce higher-performing progeny.

Grains rich in starch constitute the primary source of energy for both pigs and humans, but there is incomplete understanding of physiological mechanisms that determine the extent of digestion of grain starch in monogastric animals including pigs and humans. Slow digestion of starch to produce glucose in the small intestine (SI) leads to undigested starch escaping to the large intestine where it is fermented to produce short-chain fatty acids. Glucose generated from starch provides more energy than short-chain fatty acids for normal metabolism and growth in monogastrics. While incomplete digestion of starch leads to underutilised feed in pigs and economic losses, it is desirable in human nutrition to maintain consistent body weight in adults. Undigested nutrients reaching the ileum may trigger the ileal brake, and fermentation of undigested nutrients or fibre in the large intestine triggers the colonic brake. These intestinal brakes reduce the passage rate in an attempt to maximise nutrient utilisation, and lead to increased satiety that may reduce feed intake. The three physiological mechanisms that control grain digestion and feed intake are: (1) gastric emptying rate; (2) interplay of grain digestion and passage rate in the SI controlling the activation of the ileal brake; and (3) fermentation of undigested nutrients or fibre in the large intestine activating the colonic brake. Fibre plays an important role in influencing these mechanisms and the extent of their effects. In this review, an account of the physiological mechanisms controlling the passage rate, feed intake and enzymatic digestion of grains is presented: (1) to evaluate the merits of recently developed methods of grain/starch digestion for application purposes; and (2) to identify opportunities for future research to advance our understanding of how the combination of controlled grain digestion and fibre content can be manipulated to physiologically influence satiety and food intake.

1. The experiment was designed to investigate the effect of growth at a high ambient temperature, 33–35°C, on the protein and energy metabolism of pigs, compared with 25°C. The high temperature caused an increase in rectal temperature of 1·4° to 1·7°C. The animals were given two low levels of feeding while growing between 25 and 70 kg live weight; energy and nitrogen retention were measured periodically.

2. The apparent digestibilities of the dietary dry matter and energy were decreased and urinary nitrogen losses were increased at the high temperature. Heat production was increased at the high temperature, by between 2% and 10%, the effect becoming more pronounced during the course of the experiment. Retention of energy and nitrogen was reduced at the high temperature.

3. The net efficiency of utilization of metabolized energy above maintenance was between 63% and 67%, and was not significantly affected by live weight or temperature. The results suggested that maintenance requirement was increased at the high temperature.

4. Analyses of sample joints indicated that the high temperature caused an increase in fat percentage only at the higher level of feeding; this result agreed with fat and protein retention calculated from the balances.

In experiment 1, 12 cows (treatment L) received natural daylight (mean 8 h), 10 h supplementary light (mean intensity 481 lux) and dark (mean 6 h), and 12 cows (treatment N) received natural daylight (mean 8 h) and dark (mean 16 h) for 8 weeks. Supplementary light increased milk yield and tended to increase food intake and loss of live weight. There were no significant effects on milk composition although milk fat concentration tended to be reduced for cows in treatment L. Daily feeding times were not affected by treatment although more feeding took place during the supplementary light in treatment L. Supplementary light increased the time spent lying down per day and reduced the distance walked per day, although cows in treatment L spent less time lying during the light supplementation period. In both treatments, the activity rate was increased on the day of oestrus, but in treatment L the incidence of oestrus-specific behaviour was significantly reduced compared with treatment N.

In experiment 2, 16 cows received natural daylight (mean 9 h) and 10 h supplementary light of mean intensity 0, 101, 191 or 529 lux in a change-over design. There were no significant effects of supplementary light or its intensity on the food intake, milk yield or live-weight change of the cows, but milk fat concentration was reduced for cows receiving supplementary light at 101 or 529 lux and milk protein concentration was reduced for cows receiving light at 529 lux.
