Lipid mobilization was investigated in pigs selected for high and low backfat thickness for four generations. Both epinephrine and pituitary lipid mobilizing factors (LMF) induced in vitro lipolysis in pig fat. The release of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) from fat pads sampled from the group selected for thin backfat, the control group, and the group selected for thick backfat differed significantly, the means being 1·16 ± 0·18, 0·83 ± 0·06 and 0·40 ± 0·04 μmol/100 mg per 3 hr respectively.

The inhibition by pig serum from the same groups of an LMF- induced adipokinesis in rabbits also differed significantly. The mean NEFA concentrations were, in the same sequence, 5·05 ± 0·15, 3·35 ± 0·27 and 1·29 ± 0·11 milliequiv/litre respectively. A difference in feeding level of about 20% between 25 and 90 kg live weight did not influence lipid mobilization in vitro.

The serum inhibition method may be a useful aid to early selection for leanness, since it appears that the method may be used for pigs 5 to 6 weeks old.

Exogenous bovine pituitary somatotropin (GH) can influence markedly body composition in fattening lambs. However, neither the effects of biosynthetic somatotropin nor the effects of dose and method of administration have been reported. Fifty Dorset-cross lambs (female and castrated male) were given concentrate ad libitum and treated between 10 and 22 weeks of age with biosynthetic bovine somatotropin either dissolved in buffer and injected subcutaneously (s.c.) in proportion to body weight (0·025, 0·1 or 0·25 mg/kg per day), dissolved in buffer and continuously infused s.c. (0·1 mg/kg per day) or suspended in olive oil and injected s.c. (0·1 mg/kg per day), and compared with 10 untreated control lambs. Somatotropin had little effect on live-weight gain (controls = 228 g/day; final live weight 37 kg), food intake and food conversion efficiency, and only marginally increased the weight of muscle and bone dissected from the shoulder joint. The weights of the major fat depots in the abdominal cavity and of fat dissected from the shoulder joint were linearly related to dose of somatotropin (P < 0·001). Lambs given the highest dose had less visceral fat (1·18 v. 2·84 kg; P < 0·001) and proportionately less fat (285 v. 374 g/kg; P < 0·001) and more muscle (542 v. 447 g/kg) and bone (172 v. 149 g/kg; P < 0·001) in the shoulder joint than control lambs. There was a positive curvilinear relationship (P < 0·01) between clean wool growth (mid-side patch sample) and dose; lambs injected daily with 0·1 mg somatotropin per kg grew one-third more wool than control lambs. Method of administration affected plasma somatotropin profiles but had no significant influence on any of the responses measured. The anabolic actions of somatotropin may have been limited in this experiment by a low sodium concentration in the diet. It is concluded that the lipolytic/anti-lipogenic effect of somatotropin can occur in the absence of conditions conducive to the stimulation of muscle protein deposition and that the response is dose dependent but not influenced by method of administration of the hormone.

Footrot is a costly endemic disease of sheep. This study investigates the potential to decrease its prevalence through selective breeding for decreased lesion score. Pedigreed mule and Scottish Blackface (SBF) ewes were scored for lesions on each hoof on a 0 to 4 scale for up to 2 (SBF ewes) or 4 (mules) times over 2 years. One score was obtained for SBF lambs. An animal was deemed to have lesions (severe lesions) if at least one hoof had a score of at least 1 (2). The prevalence of lesions was 34% in lambs, 17% in SBF ewes and 51% in mules. The heritability of lesions (severe lesions) analysed as repeated measurements of the same trait in a threshold model was 0.19 (0.26) in SBF ewes and 0.12 (0.19) in mules. Estimates for the sum and maximum of scores as well as the number of feet affected were much lower, as were estimates for permanent animal effects (i.e. non-genetic effects associated with an animal). When successive scores on the same animal were analysed as correlated traits, heritability estimates for most traits tended to be higher, except for severe footrot in mules where estimates varied greatly over time. The phenotypic correlations between successive scores in SBF ewes were close to 0, genetic correlations were moderately positive (0.18 to 0.55). Correlations in mules were generally of a similar size, but some genetic correlations were higher (up to 0.92). There was a clear trend for heritabilities for lesions and severe lesions to increase with higher prevalence of lesions, even when analysed in a threshold model. Heritability estimates for traits that combine scores over several events in mules, identifying the more persistently affected animals, ranged from 0.12 to 0.23 with the highest estimates for the average number of feet that were (severely) affected in animals scored for a minimum at two events. The heritability of all lesion traits in lambs was estimated as 0. It is concluded that selection for lower lesions is possible in ewes but not lambs, and that a simple binary score at an animal level is at least as effective as a comprehensive score at hoof level. Given the low repeatability of lesion scores, repeated measures over time will improve effectiveness of selection. Selection across environments (flocks, seasons) with different prevalences of lesions scores will need to take account of variation in the heritability.

An investigation was made into a possible relationship between the relative growth potential and skeletal muscle fibre number in low birth weight Large White pigs and their heaviest birth-weight littermates. Estimates of the total fibre number of m. semitendinosus were made from 23 pairs of ‘small’ and ‘large’ littermates. Littermates were slaughtered at the same age and were of a mean live weight 86 (s.d. 15) kg. Small littermates (mean birth weight 939 (s.d. 164) g) had, on average, lower live weights at slaughter (P < 0·001) and lower muscle fibre numbers (P < 0·05) than their large littermates (mean birth weight 2085 (s.d. 343) g). However, pigs within the low birth-weight category exhibited various degrees of catch-up growth with their heaviest littermates and some individuals actually exceeded their large littermates in live weight at slaughter. The relative live weights at slaughter and relative muscle fibre numbers of small and large littermates were determined by expressing the value for the small littermate as a proportion of the corresponding value for its large littermate. No correlation existed between relative live weight at slaughter and relative muscle fibre number of small and large littermates. The small littermates were then divided into two groups by their mean value of relative small to large slaughter weight (0·84). The littermates of low relative slaughter weight (≤0·84) exhibited a large range of muscle fibre numbers although their mean fibre numbers were lower than their large littermates (P < 0·05). This large range was probably responsible for the lack of correlation mentioned above. Those small littermates which exhibited a good degree of catch-up growth (relative slaughter weight >0·84) possessed fibre numbers which were not significantly different from those of their large littermates. These results suggest that pigs which exhibit an appreciable degree of catch-up growth always contain high relative numbers of fibres in their muscles. Those which show a poor degree of catch-up growth (≤O·84) exhibit a range of fibre numbers because there may be environmental and other factors which prevent some pigs from realizing their full growth potential. The results of the present study advocate muscle fibre number as an indicator at birth of potential for post-natal growth performance.

It is well known that energy plays an important role in sow growth and development. Increasing the utilization of lipids will be beneficial to sows. Emulsifiers are substances which stabilize mixtures and prevent oil and water from separating, thereby enhancing the digestion of lipids. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary emulsifier (lysophospholipids (LPL)) supplementation in diets differing in fat contents on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and milk composition in lactating sows, as well as performance and fecal score in piglets. A total of 32 multiparous sows (Landrace×Yorkshire) were used in a 21-day experiment. On day 110 of gestation, sows were weighed and moved into the farrowing facility, randomly assigned in a 2×2 factorial arrangement according to their BW with two levels of LPL (0 and 30 mg/kg) and two levels of fat (4.75% and 2.38% fat; 13.66 and 13.24 MJ/kg). BW loss and backfat thickness loss were decreased (P<0.05) by LPL supplementation. Backfat thickness at weaning was higher (P<0.05) in sows fed LPL supplementation diets. The apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen, gross energy and crude fat in sows fed LPL diets was increased (P<0.05) compared with those fed non-LPL diets. Sows fed the high-fat diets had higher (P<0.05) milk fat on day 10 and milk lactose on day 20 than those fed the low-fat diets. Milk fat and lactose concentrations in LPL supplementation treatments was increased (P<0.05) compared with non-LPL treatments on day 10 and day 20, respectively. Positive interaction effects (P<0.05) between fat and LPL were observed for milk fat concentration on day 10. In conclusion, LPL addition decreased BW loss and backfat thickness loss, improved nutrient digestibility and milk fat as well as milk lactose concentrations. In addition, there was a complementary positive effect of dietary fat and LPL supplementation on milk fat concentration in lactating sows.

An analysis has been carried out of over 88000 calving survey records for bulls of eight beef breeds tested in commercial dairy herds in England and Wales. The data were collected from 1981 to 1993. The traits analysed were the degree of difficulty at calving, assessed from no difficulty to serious difficulty, calf mortality to 48 h, gestation length, and subjective assessments of calf size and conformation.

Major sire breeds in the survey were the Hereford (30070 records, 93 sires), Charolais (25816 records, 105 sires) and the Limousin (15420 records, 55 sires). Other sire breeds were Belgian Blue (5391 records, 24 sires), Simmental (3864 records, 19 sires), Aberdeen Angus (2886 records, 12 sires), Piedmontese (2423 records, 7 sires) and the Blonde d'Aquitaine (2271 records, 8 sires).

Information was routinely recorded on cow age (heifer or mature), sex of the calf, and the year and month of the calving, while cow size and the regional location of the herd were also recorded in later years.

Heifers had more difficult calvings, higher calf losses and shorter gestations than mature cows (all P < 0·05) Seriously difficult calvings and calf mortality were higher for male calves, which were also larger and had better conformation than heifer calves (P < 0·05).

Sire breed effects were significant for all traits, although sire breed ranking for calving ease was different for cow and heifer calvings and some interactions involving sire breed were also significant. For cow calvings, the easiest calving breeds were the Hereford (1·1%) and the Aberdeen Angus (1·4%), while the Charolais (4·3%), Blonde d'Aquitaine (3·7%) and Simmental (3·1%) had most difficult calvings.

Gestation length differed between sire breeds, from Aberdeen Angus (281·0 days) and Hereford (282·7 days) up to the Limousin (288·1 days) and the Blonde d'Aquitaine (289·0 days). For calf size and conformation, the Simmental, Charolais and Blonde d'Aquitaine were the best.

In general, summer months were associated with lower incidences of difficult calvings, lower losses and shorter gestations.

Large cows had calves which were larger and of better conformation than small or medium cows, but large cows also had longer gestations, more difficult calvings and poorer calf survival (all P < 0·05).

Statistical models are discussed that should be used for the genetic evaluation of calving survey traits, when beef bulls are to be used in dairy herds in the United Kingdom.

Selection for prolificacy in sows has resulted in higher metabolic demands during lactation. In addition, modern sows have an increased genetic merit for leanness. Consequently, sow metabolism during lactation has changed, possibly affecting milk production and litter weight gain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lactational feed intake on milk production and relations between mobilization of body tissues (adipose tissue or skeletal muscle) and milk production in modern sows with a different lactational feed intake. A total of 36 primiparous sows were used, which were either full-fed (6.5 kg/day) or restricted-fed (3.25 kg/day) during the last 2 weeks of a 24-day lactation. Restricted-fed sows had a lower milk fat percentage at weaning and a lower litter weight gain and estimated milk fat and protein production in the last week of lactation. Next, several relations between sow body condition (loss) and milk production variables were identified. Sow BW, loin muscle depth and backfat depth at parturition were positively related to milk fat production in the last week of lactation. In addition, milk fat production was related to the backfat depth loss while milk protein production was related to the loin muscle depth loss during lactation. Backfat depth and loin muscle depth at parturition were positively related to lactational backfat depth loss or muscle depth loss, respectively. Together, results suggest that sows which have more available resources during lactation, either from a higher amount of body tissues at parturition or from an increased feed intake during lactation, direct more energy toward milk production to support a higher litter weight gain. In addition, results show that the type of milk nutrients that sows produce (i.e. milk fat or milk protein) is highly related to the type of body tissues that are mobilized during lactation. Interestingly, relations between sow body condition and milk production were all independent of feed level during lactation. Sow management strategies to increase milk production and litter growth in modern sows may focus on improving sow body condition at the start of lactation or increasing feed intake during lactation.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of an improved growth, dietary nutrient availability and overall health of broiler chickens reared on recycled litter when fed a standardised combination of essential oils (EO; carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde and capsicum oleoresin). To assess the effect of dietary treatments, feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency, availability of dietary nutrients and energy, villus morphometry, excreta sialic acid concentration, hepatic antioxidants and serum amyloid A (SAA) when fed to broiler chickens were evaluated. Counts of Eimeria spp. oocysts were also determined in excreta samples. Four experimental diets were offered, including two basal control diets based on either wheat or maize that contained 215 g CP/kg and 12.13 MJ/kg metabolisable energy and another two diets using the basal control diets supplemented with the EO combination at 100 mg/kg diet. Each diet was fed to eight floor pens, containing two birds each, following randomisation. Birds fed the EO-supplemented diets had an improved (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR). Birds fed maize-based diet had an improved daily weight gain and FCR (P<0.05) compared with wheat-fed birds. Wheat-based diet tended (P=0.056) to have greater N-corrected apparent metabolisable energy and had greater fat retention coefficient (P<0.05) compared with maize-based diets. No differences (P>0.05) were observed in villus morphometry, sialic acid secretion, number of oocysts and SAA. Feeding the EO improved (P<0.05) the retention of dietary Ca and Na. Compared with maize, feeding wheat-based diets improved the retention coefficients for Ca, P and Na (P<0.05). Feeding dietary EO improved (P<0.05) the concentrations of the hepatic antioxidants, including carotene, coenzyme Q10 and total vitamin E. The hepatic concentration of carotene of the maize-fed birds was 55.6% greater (P<0.05) compared with the wheat-fed birds. These results demonstrated that the addition of a standardised combination of EO in wheat- and maize-based diets provided benefits in terms of feed efficiency, mineral retention and antioxidant status of the birds when reared on recycled litter.

This study examined the effect of a bovine colostrum whey supplementation on growth performance, feed intake, faecal Escherichiacoli population and systemic immune response of piglets at weaning. A total of 96 piglets weaned at 26 ± 2 days of age were assigned for 4 weeks to one of the two treatments: (1) the control (commercial diet with bovine milk whey powder) and (2) the colostrum (commercial diet with freeze-dried bovine colostrum whey) treatments. The two supplements were incorporated in the diet at a level of 20 g/kg during the first 2 weeks after weaning and lowered to a level of 10 g/kg for the next 2 weeks. BW and feed intake were measured weekly. Faecal E. coli counts were determined weekly on specific culture media. Blood samples were collected weekly and submitted to a cell counter analyser for their main components (red and white blood cells, platelets) and flow cytometry was used to determine the lymphocyte population (B, T, Th and Tc). Finally, total seric immunoglobulin (IgM, IgG and IgA) concentrations were determined by the ELISA method. During the first week of the trial, the piglets from the colostrum treatment had improved average daily gain (170 g/day v. 81 g/day, P < 0.001), average daily feed intake (346 g/day v. 256 g/day, P = 0.03) and feed efficiency (BW gain/feed intake) (0.48 v. 0.31, P = 0.04). The pigs fed the colostrum treatment had also a 25% increase in circulating IgA (P = 0.03) compared with the control treatment the first week. It is concluded that a distribution of bovine colostrum whey (20 g/kg diet) during the first week post-weaning induces a systemic IgA response and has a beneficial action on growth performances and feed efficiency.

Cloning of cattle from embryos has been achieved by nuclear transfer. Repeated cloning to produce large clones of genetically identical individuals for commercial use may soon become possible. The main advantage in breeding will come from identifying and using superior clones, selected to fit particular husbandry and marketing niches. Two types of cattle clones will be required, terminal clones chosen for economic merit in production traits, such as growth and carcass traits, and maternal clones chosen for reproduction and maternal traits, such as short calving interval, ease of calving, milking and mothering ability and small mature size. Clonal selection and use will provide several steps of improvement. An initial gain will come by recruiting clones from elite stocks and further responses by selecting the best clones for commercial use. This will reverse the normal improvement lag between breeding and commercial stocks. Heterosis will also be exploited by using crossline clones. For continuous genetic improvement, genetic variation will be maintained by breeding the next generation from a number of selected male and female clones and testing and selecting their progeny, the new set of clones, as before. For maximum improvement rates, both male and female clones will need to be tested. In the short term (5 to 10 years), benefits will come from testing a large number of clones by which gains in economic merit of proportionately 0·15 to 0·30 of the mean can be achieved. Further improvements will come by rebreeding the best clones and testing and selecting the new set of clones from which annual genetic response rates of proportionately 0·02 to 0·03 per year are possible. Cloning thus offers considerable advantages in the improvement of beef cattle.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of supplemental genistein (an isoflavonoid) on performance, lymphoid organs’ development, and cellular and humoral immune responses in broiler chicks. A total of 675-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to the five replicate pens (15 chicks each) of nine experimental diets. Dietary treatments included a negative (not-supplemented) control diet, two positive control groups (virginiamycin or zinc-bacitracin, 20 mg/kg), and diets containing 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 mg/kg of genistein. The cutaneous basophil hypersensivity (CBH) test was measured at day 10 of age after toe web injection with phytohemagglutinin-P. In addition, sera samples were collected after different antigen inoculations to investigate antibody responses. At day 28 of age, three randomly selected birds from each pen were euthanized to evaluate the relative weights of lymphoid organs. Results showed that dietary supplementation of both antibiotics increased (P<0.01) feed intake during 1 to 42 days of age. Furthermore, daily weight gain was influenced (P<0.01) by dietary treatments throughout the trial, so that the birds fed on antibiotics and 20 to 80 mg/kg genistein diets revealed the greater weight gains compared with other experimental groups. The best (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio assigned to the birds fed on diets containing antibiotics and moderate levels (40 to 80 mg/kg) of genistein. Although the relative weights of thymus (P<0.05) and bursa of Fabricius (P<0.01) were greater in birds fed on genistein-supplemented diets compared with antibiotics-supplemented birds, the spleen weight was not affected by experimental diets. Similarly, CBH response and antibody titers against Newcastle and infectious bronchitis disease viruses were markedly (P<0.05) greater in chicks fed on diets supplemented with 20 to 80 mg/kg of genistein. Interestingly, the higher dosages of genistein suppressed CBH and antibody responses to the levels seen by control and antibiotics chicks. Dietary inclusion of genistein increased (P<0.05) lymphocytes and subsequently reduced (P<0.01) heterophil to lymphocyte ratio. The present findings indicate that dietary genistein supplementation at the levels of 20 to 80 mg/kg not only improves growth performance, but also could beneficially affect immunological responses in broiler chicks.

Over 4 years, a flock of mature North Country Cheviot ewes was grazed on different swards between weaning in August and mid October to achieve a range of condition scores at 5 weeks before mating (post-weaning period). During the subsequent 5 weeks before a synchronized mating (pre-mating period), all ewes were grazed on a perennial ryegrass/white clover sward, provided at high (H) or low (L) herbage masses (1600 to 2100 or 1200 to 1400 kg dry matter (DM) per ha, respectively). Ovulation rate was derived from the number of corpora lutea in 101 ewes slaughtered after first mating. Conception and lambing rates were derived from the number of lambs born to first mating of 406 ewes. In 2 out of the 4 years, 79 ewes were used to estimate herbage intake.

There was no effect of post-weaning management on reproductive performance. Herbage intake and reproductive performance were examined in relation to the body condition of the ewes at 5 weeks before mating. On an H herbage mass pre-mating, herbage intake in the period immediately prior to mating was greatest in ewes in low body condition and declined significantly with increasing condition. On an L herbage mass pre-mating, herbage intake did not vary significantly with condition. Ovulation rate was low in ewes in low body condition (scores =≤·25) at 5 weeks before mating, increased significantly with increasing condition up to scores 2·50/2·75 but did not change significantly above such intermediate scores. Conception and lambing rates increased significantly with increasing body condition up to scores 2·50/2·75 and then decreased significantly as condition increased above these levels. These effects of body condition were greater on an L herbage mass pre-mating than they were on an H herbage mass. Ewes in the intermediate body condition scores of 2·50 and 2·75 at 5 weeks before mating had a low sensitivity to contemporary nutrition pre-mating. Such condition levels are therefore considered to be above the range of condition in the North Country Cheviot breed within which reproductive response is affected by contemporary nutrition pre-mating.

The lower reproductive performance of ewes in high body condition (scores 3=3·00) at 5 weeks before mating was related to an increase in estimated ova and embryo loss and may be associated with a reduced herbage intake.

Following weaning of their first litter at 42 days post partum, 36 Landrace × (Landrace × Large White) sows were fasted for 24 hr then allocated to one of three feed levels, 1·8, 2·7 and 3·6 kg food/day, until the day after mating. During pregnancy all the sows received 1·8 kg food/day.

The incidence of infertility and anoestrus was greatest for sows fed 1·8 kg/day and least for sows fed 3·6 kg·day. Sows fed 1·8 kg/day took significantly (P < 0·01) longer (21·6 + 3·0 days) to return to oestrus than sows fed 3·6 kg/day (9·2 ± 2·2 days). The mean litter size for sows fed 1·8, 2·7 and 3·6 kg food/day was 9·4 ± 0·9, 10·1 ± 0·8 and 11·5 ± 0·6 piglets respectively, but these differences were not significant.

The relationships between the level of skatole in backfat, the rate of skatole metabolism in isolated liver microsomes, hepatic cytochrome P450IIE1 content and mRNA levels were investigated in Large White ✕ Landrace (LW) and the Meishan ✕ Landrace (M) breeds. A method based on thin layer chromatography was developed and used for measurement of microsomal skatole metabolism. Skatole metabolism by liver microsomes was inhibited by diallyl sulphide, a specific inhibitor of cytochrome P450IIE1 but not by inhibitors of other P450 isoforms. We have shown that the rate of skatole metabolism by liver microsomes was proportional to the microsomal P450IIE1 content. In LW pigs there was considerable variation in cytochrome P450IIE1 expression and P450IIE1 protein level and there was a significant negative correlation between backfat skatole level and hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450IIE1 content. Pigs exhibiting low P450IIE1 content in general also showed low levels of P450IIE1 mRNA. These results show that the levels of deposition of backfat skatole in LW pigs are inversely related to the rate at which skatole can be metabolized by liver microsomes, and this in turn depends on the level of expression of cytochrome P450IIE1 mRNA in the liver. In the M breed generally the P450IIE1 protein and mRNA levels were very low and backfat skatole level was high. However the skatole level varied over a 10-fold range and there was no significant correlation with P450IIE1 protein or mRNA content. The M breed was shown to express high levels of the multidrug resistance protein in liver, and it is suggested that export of skatole from liver via this transport protein may be an additional factor regulating backfat skatole in M pigs, but not in the LW breed.

1. Over the weight range 23–50 kg live weight, pigs were fed either ad libitum or to a restricted scale. From 59 to 91 kg live weight, eight pairs of barrows and eight pairs of gilts were fed on each of two diets varying in nutrient density. The effects of feed restriction, nutrient density of the diet and sex on voluntary feed intake, performance and carcass characteristics were studied.

2. Pigs which had been restricted grew more slowly and contained less fat and more lean at 50 kg live weight.

3. When restricted pigs were offered feed ad libitum from 59 to 91 kg live weight they ate more and had higher daily intakes of digestible energy than pigs liberally fed in early life.

4. There was evidence of compensatory growth in pigs which had received the restricted diet, but there was no significant difference in feed utilization between restricted and ad libitum pigs. It was concluded that the compensatory growth was largely the result of increased appetite.

5. Pigs finally fed on a low energy diet, in comparison with those on a high energy diet, ate more feed but less digestible energy indicating that appetite was physically limited. Efficiency of conversion of digestible energy to live weight was similar on both treatments. A higher proportion of acetic acid was produced in the caecum of pigs fed the low energy diet. Pigs receiving the low energy diet had lower killing-out percentages not entirely caused by differences in the weight of the gut and its contents. The carcasses of pigs on the low energy diet were leaner than those on the high energy diet.

6. Barrows consumed more digestible energy per day than gilts, required more feed and digestible energy per unit live-weight gain, had lower killing-out percentages, shorter carcasses, larger backfat measurements and smaller eye-muscle areas as estimated by A × B measurements. Barrow carcasses contained less dissected lean and more fat than gilts' carcasses.

7. The results are discussed in relation to other work and it is concluded that voluntary feed intake is influenced by the nutrient density of the diet and the level of energy requirement of the pig, which may be affected by previous nutritional history.

To determine the effect of age at castration on physiological and immunological stress indices, 60 Holstein-Friesian bull calves were sourced so that they were in one of five age groups for Burdizzo castration on day 0 (16 July 2002; no. = 10 per treatment) : 1·5, 2·5, 3·5, 4·5, and 5·5 months of age (mean body weight ± s.e. = 63 ± 2·5, 89 ± 3·7, 104 ± 3·7, 142 ± 3·6, 169 ± 8·1 kg, respectively), or were sham castrated at 5·5 months of age (171 ± 2·9 kg body weight) to serve as intact controls specific to this age group. Blood samples were collected at 15- to 30-min intervals from 2 h before until 8 h after treatment, with further samples collected at 10 and 12 h on day 0, and on days 1, 2 and 3, and weekly from days 7 to 35 after treatment. Following castration, peak plasma cortisol responses were significantly greater in 5·5-month-old castrates than intact calves, and all calves castrated at a younger age had reduced peak responses, with the greatest reduction in 1·5-month-old castrates. Overall, the integrated cortisol responses for the first 3 h after castration were three-fold greater in 5·5-month-old castrates than intact calves. While the integrated cortisol responses were reduced by proportionately 0·46 and 0·35 in 1·5- and 4·5-month-old castrates, the lower responses observed in 2·5- and 3·5- month-old castrates were not significantly different from the 5·5-month-old castrates. The integrated cortisol responses for the next 9 h after castration were not different among treatment groups. On day 3 after castration, peak plasma haptoglobin and fibrinogen concentrations were significantly greater in 5·5-month-old castrates than intact calves, but the concentrations were markedly reduced in calves castrated at 1·5 and 2·5 months than when castrated at 5·5 months of age. On day 1, phytohaemagglutinin-induced in vitro interferon-γ production was suppressed in 5·5-month-old castrates compared with intact calves. Scrotal circumferences increased in all castrates on day 1 and 7 and were greater in 5·5- month-old castrates than intact calves, but the swelling was reduced in the 1·5- compared with 5·5-month-old castrates. The temperature differences between the core body and scrotal skin were greater on day 2 and 3 in the 1·5-month-old than all other castrates. There was no effect of castration on the overall 42-day growth rates of calves. In conclusion, the physiological stress and inflammation caused by Burdizzo castration, indicated by increased plasma cortisol, acute-phase proteins, scrotal swelling, and depressed temperature differences between the core body and scrotal skin were reduced by castrating calves at 1·5 months rather than at 5·5 months of age.

The objectives of this study were to assess the relationship between blood lactate variation measured at the plant, and pork quality variation on a large sample size and under commercial preslaughter handling conditions. A total of 600 pigs were randomly chosen on arrival at a commercial slaughter plant and blood samples taken from the ear vein at unloading (UN), after lairage (LA), in the restrainer (RE; before stunning) and at exsanguination (EX) were analysed for lactate content using a Lactate Scout Analyzer (LSA). In order to have a large range of measures, pigs were distributed into two groups; one kept in lairage overnight (G1) and the other for 2 to 3 h (G2) before slaughter. Meat quality was assessed in the Longissimus thoracis (LT), Semimembranosus (SM) and Adductor (AD) muscles by measuring the pH 30 min postmortem (pH1) and at 24 h postmortem (pHu), the colour and the drip loss. Blood lactate levels did not differ between G1 and G2 (P>0.05). A reduced muscle lactate and glucose contents (P=0.02 and P=0.004, respectively) resulting in a lower (P<0.001) glycolytic potential (GP) was observed in the LT muscle of G1 pigs when compared with G2 loins. In the LT muscle of G1 pigs, the lower GP resulted in an increased pHu (r=−0.67; P<0.001), decreased drip loss (r=0.57; P<0.001) and darker colour (r=0.50; P<0.001) compared with G2. In both G1 and G2 pigs, the lower GP was correlated to higher pHu value in the SM and AD muscles (r=−0.73; P<0.001). The greatest correlation was observed in G2 between blood lactate levels at LA and pHu value of the SM and AD muscles (r=0.46 and r=0.44, respectively; P<0.001 for both muscles). The second greatest correlation was found between blood lactate levels at EX and pH1 value in the SM muscle in both groups (r=−0.37 and r=−0.41, respectively; P<0.001 for both groups). Based on the results of this study, it appears that blood lactate levels, as measured by the LSA, reliably reflect the physiological response of pigs to perimortem stress and may help explain the variation in pork quality.

A commercial pig spends nearly half of its life in utero and its nutrition during this time can influence birth weight and postnatal growth. We hypothesised that postnatal growth is increased in pigs raised by sows with a high backfat depth and high level of energy intake during gestation compared with sows with a low backfat depth and low level of energy intake during gestation. This was tested in a 2×3 factorial design experiment with 2 factors for gilt backfat depth (Thin and Fat) and 3 factors for gestation feed allowance (Restricted, Control and High). Between d 25 and d 90 of gestation, Thin gilts (n=68; 12±0.6 mm P2 backfat) and Fat gilts (n=72; 19±0.6 mm P2 backfat) were randomly allocated, as individuals, to a gestation diet (6.19 g/kg lysine, 13.0 MJ DE/kg) at the following feed allowances: 1.8 kg/day (Restricted); 2.5 kg/day (Control) and 3.5 kg/day (High). For the remainder of gestation and during lactation all gilts were treated similarly. At weaning (day 28), 155 piglets were sacrificed and 272 were individually housed and followed through to slaughter (day 158). At day 80 of gestation, fasted Thin Restricted gilts had lower serum IGF-1 concentrations than Thin High or Thin Control fed gilts (P<0.001). Pigs born from Fat gilts had greater backfat depths (P<0.05), a lower lean meat yield (P<0.05) and were heavier (P<0.05) at slaughter than pigs born from Thin gilts. Gilt gestation feed allowance had only transitory effects on average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency and had no effect on pig weight at slaughter (P>0.05) or lean meat yield (P>0.05). In conclusion, gilts with a backfat depth of ~19 mm at insemination produced pigs that were heavier and fatter at ~158 days of age than those born from gilts with ~12 mm backfat depth at insemination. Maternal body condition during gestation had a more predominant influence on growth parameters of the offspring, such as weight at slaughter and backfat depth, than did feed level during gestation.

Crossbreeding parameters and variance components were estimated for lactation and reproductive traits of crosses between the Sahiwal, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire breeds in a dairy herd in sub-humid coastal Kenya. An individual animal model urns fitted to the data with a fixed effect for 20 distinct breed crosses. The estimates of breed cross means were then regressed on average breed content, expected average heterozygosity and recombination loss to determine the additive breed contributions, and the contributions of dominance and epistasis to heterosis. It was estimated that the Sahiwal contributed about 1345 kg (proportionally 0·33) less milk per lactation than the Brown Swiss. The Ayrshire was intermediate. The large amount of heterosis from the crosses of the Sahiwal (Bos indicusj and Bos taurus breeds more than compensated for the lower additive value of the Sahiwal when used in a three-breed rotational cross or synthetic. Heterosis amotig Bos taurus breeds was negligible. Estimates of the maternal heterosis and recombination loss (epistasis) were not significant, although the latter were consistently large and positive. It was concluded that the heterosis between the zebu and European breeds was mainly due to dominance effects. Estimates of heritability for milk yield traits were low (around 0·09 to 0·13) compared with other studies, although estimates of repeatability (around 0·29 to 0·33) were similar to results from the literature, indicating that the accuracy of estimated breeding values in this crossbred herd was reduced because of the non-additive genetic effects. The genetic improvement of crossbred herds is discussed.

The live-weight responses, voluntary herbage intakes and diet compositions of two breeds of sheep of different mature live weights, grazing two contrasting hill vegetation communities, were studied over three consecutive grazing seasons. A total of 228 Latxa and 255 Gallega non-lactating ewes, with mature live weights of 42.4 and 33.1 kg respectively, grazed two replicates, each of two 5-ha plots comprising by area either 0⋅3 Calluna vulgaris and 0.7 grass species (Agrostis capillaris, Festuca rubra and Nardus stricta) (treatment C3) or 0.7 C. vulgaris and 0⋅3 of the above grass species (treatment C7).

The Latxa ewes achieved higher rates of live-weight gain than the Gallega ewes under conditions of high availability (sward surface height >3⋅0 cm) of the preferred grass species (A. capillaris and F. rubra) but had lower rates of live-weight gain in the later part of the grazing season when the availability of the preferred grass species was low. In general, the Latxa ewes had higher voluntary herbage intakes per unit live weight and selected a diet of higher digestibility than the Gallega ewes (P < 0⋅001). The composition of the diet was significantly affected by treatment (P < 0⋅001) and was of a higher digestibility in the earlier part of the grazing season (P < 0⋅001).

The results indicate the existence of a significant (P < 0⋅001) genotype × environment interaction affecting diet selection and animal performance. Between-breed differences in diet selection are likely to be important in determining grazing behaviour and thus the suitability of different genotypes for particular environments. Breeds with a small body size are likely to be better suited to the poorer land resources where the availability of preferred species is low.
