We consider the natural $A_{\infty }$-structure on the $\mathrm{Ext}$-algebra $\mathrm{Ext}^*(G,G)$ associated with the coherent sheaf $G=\mathcal{O}_C\oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_1}\oplus \cdots \oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_n}$ on a smooth projective curve $C$, where $p_1,\ldots,p_n\in C$ are distinct points. We study the homotopy class of the product $m_3$. Assuming that $h^0(p_1+\cdots +p_n)=1$, we prove that $m_3$ is homotopic to zero if and only if $C$ is hyperelliptic and the points $p_i$ are Weierstrass points. In the latter case we show that $m_4$ is not homotopic to zero, provided the genus of $C$ is greater than $1$. In the case $n=g$ we prove that the $A_{\infty }$-structure is determined uniquely (up to homotopy) by the products $m_i$ with $i\le 6$. Also, in this case we study the rational map $\mathcal{M}_{g,g}\to \mathbb{A}^{g^2-2g}$ associated with the homotopy class of $m_3$. We prove that for $g\ge 6$ it is birational onto its image, while for $g\le 5$ it is dominant. We also give an interpretation of this map in terms of tangents to $C$ in the canonical embedding and in the projective embedding given by the linear series $|2(p_1+\cdots +p_g)|$.

In this article, we study the homomorphisms between scalar generalized Verma modules. We conjecture that any homomorphism between scalar generalized Verma modules is a composition of elementary homomorphisms. The purpose of this article is to confirm the conjecture for some parabolic subalgebras under the assumption that the infinitesimal characters are regular.

We show how a theorem of Gabber on alterations can be used to apply the work of Cisinski, Suslin, Voevodsky, and Weibel to prove that $K_n(X) \otimes \mathbb{Z}[{1}/{p}]= 0$ for$n < {-}\! \dim X$ where $X$ is a quasi-excellent noetherian scheme, $p$ is a prime that is nilpotent on $X$, and $K_n$ is the $K$-theory of Bass–Thomason–Trobaugh. This gives a partial answer to a question of Weibel.

We calculate equivariant elliptic cohomology of the partial flag variety $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}G/H$, where $H\subseteq G$ are compact connected Lie groups of equal rank. We identify the ${\rm RO}(G)$-graded coefficients ${\mathcal{E}} ll_G^*$ as powers of Looijenga’s line bundle and prove that transfer along the map

The aim of this paper is to introduce $\tau $-tilting theory, which ‘completes’ (classical) tilting theory from the viewpoint of mutation. It is well known in tilting theory that an almost complete tilting module for any finite-dimensional algebra over a field $k$ is a direct summand of exactly one or two tilting modules. An important property in cluster-tilting theory is that an almost complete cluster-tilting object in a 2-CY triangulated category is a direct summand of exactly two cluster-tilting objects. Reformulated for path algebras $kQ$, this says that an almost complete support tilting module has exactly two complements. We generalize (support) tilting modules to what we call (support) $\tau $-tilting modules, and show that an almost complete support $\tau $-tilting module has exactly two complements for any finite-dimensional algebra. For a finite-dimensional $k$-algebra $\Lambda $, we establish bijections between functorially finite torsion classes in $ \mathsf{mod} \hspace{0.167em} \Lambda $, support $\tau $-tilting modules and two-term silting complexes in ${ \mathsf{K} }^{\mathrm{b} } ( \mathsf{proj} \hspace{0.167em} \Lambda )$. Moreover, these objects correspond bijectively to cluster-tilting objects in $ \mathcal{C} $ if $\Lambda $ is a 2-CY tilted algebra associated with a 2-CY triangulated category $ \mathcal{C} $. As an application, we show that the property of having two complements holds also for two-term silting complexes in ${ \mathsf{K} }^{\mathrm{b} } ( \mathsf{proj} \hspace{0.167em} \Lambda )$.

We show that the minimal model program on any smooth projective surface is realized as a variation of the moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.

We prove that on any compact manifold $M^{n}$ with boundary, there exists a conformal class $C$ such that for any Riemannian metric $g\in C$ of unit volume, the first positive eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian satisfies ${\it\lambda}_{1}(M^{n},g)<n\,\text{Vol}(S^{n},g_{\text{can}})^{2/n}$. We also prove a similar inequality for the first positive Steklov eigenvalue. The proof relies on a handle decomposition of the manifold. We also prove that the conformal volume of $(M,C)$ is $\text{Vol}(S^{n},g_{\text{can}})$, and that the Friedlander–Nadirashvili invariant and the Möbius volume of $M$ are equal to those of the sphere. If $M$ is a domain in a space form, $C$ is the conformal class of the canonical metric.

Finite $W$-algebras are certain associative algebras arising in Lie theory. Each $W$-algebra is constructed from a pair of a semisimple Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}$ (our base field is algebraically closed and of characteristic 0) and its nilpotent element $e$. In this paper we classify finite-dimensional irreducible modules with integral central character over $W$-algebras. In more detail, in a previous paper the first author proved that the component group $A(e)$ of the centralizer of the nilpotent element under consideration acts on the set of finite-dimensional irreducible modules over the $W$-algebra and the quotient set is naturally identified with the set of primitive ideals in $U({\mathfrak{g}})$ whose associated variety is the closure of the adjoint orbit of $e$. In this paper, for a given primitive ideal with integral central character, we compute the corresponding $A(e)$-orbit. The answer is that the stabilizer of that orbit is basically a subgroup of $A(e)$ introduced by G. Lusztig. In the proof we use a variety of different ingredients: the structure theory of primitive ideals and Harish-Chandra bimodules for semisimple Lie algebras, the representation theory of $W$-algebras, the structure theory of cells and Springer representations, and multi-fusion monoidal categories.

Let $G$ and $\tilde{G}$ be Kleinian groups whose limit sets $S$ and $\tilde{S}$, respectively, are homeomorphic to the standard Sierpiński carpet, and such that every complementary component of each of $S$ and $\tilde{S}$ is a round disc. We assume that the groups $G$ and $\tilde{G}$ act cocompactly on triples on their respective limit sets. The main theorem of the paper states that any quasiregular map (in a suitably defined sense) from an open connected subset of $S$ to $\tilde{S}$ is the restriction of a Möbius transformation that takes $S$ onto $\tilde{S}$, in particular it has no branching. This theorem applies to the fundamental groups of compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with non-empty totally geodesic boundaries. One consequence of the main theorem is the following result. Assume that $G$ is a torsion-free hyperbolic group whose boundary at infinity $\partial _{\infty }G$ is a Sierpiński carpet that embeds quasisymmetrically into the standard 2-sphere. Then there exists a group $H$ that contains $G$ as a finite index subgroup and such that any quasisymmetric map $f$ between open connected subsets of $\partial _{\infty }G$ is the restriction of the induced boundary map of an element $h\in H$.

We introduce a dual logarithmic residue map for hypersurface singularities and use it to answer a question of Kyoji Saito. Our result extends a theorem of Lê and Saito by an algebraic characterization of hypersurfaces that are normal crossing in codimension one. For free divisors, we relate the latter condition to other natural conditions involving the Jacobian ideal and the normalization. This leads to an algebraic characterization of normal crossing divisors. As a side result, we describe all free divisors with Gorenstein singular locus.

We prove that if $y''=f(y,y',t,\alpha ,\beta ,\ldots)$ is a generic Painlevé equation from among the classes II, IV and V, and if $y_1,\ldots,y_n$ are distinct solutions, then $\mathrm{tr.deg}(\mathbb{C}(t)(y_1,y'_1,\ldots,y_n,y'_n)/\mathbb{C}(t))=2n$. (This was proved by Nishioka for the single equation $P_{{\rm I}}$.) For generic Painlevé III and VI, we have a slightly weaker result: $\omega $-categoricity (in the sense of model theory) of the solution space, as described below. The results confirm old beliefs about the Painlevé transcendents.

We prove that if $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}S$ is a properly embedded $\pi _1$-injective surface in a compact 3-manifold $M$, then $\pi _1S$ is separable in $\pi _1M$.

A theorem due to Ohkawa states that the collection of Bousfield equivalence classes of spectra is a set. We extend this result to arbitrary combinatorial model categories.

The Chevalley involution of a connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field takes every semisimple element to a conjugate of its inverse, and this involution is unique up to conjugacy. In the case of the reals we prove the existence of a real Chevalley involution, which is defined over $\mathbb{R}$, takes every semisimple element of $G(\mathbb{R})$ to a $G(\mathbb{R})$-conjugate of its inverse, and is unique up to conjugacy by $G(\mathbb{R})$. We derive some consequences, including an analysis of groups for which every irreducible representation is self-dual, and a calculation of the Frobenius Schur indicator for such groups.

We give a generalized and self-contained account of Haglund–Paulin’s wallspaces and Sageev’s construction of the CAT(0) cube complex dual to a wallspace. We examine criteria on a wallspace leading to finiteness properties of its dual cube complex. Our discussion is aimed at readers wishing to apply these methods to produce actions of groups on cube complexes and understand their nature. We develop the wallspace ideas in a level of generality that facilitates their application. Our main result describes the structure of dual cube complexes arising from relatively hyperbolic groups. Let $H_1,\ldots, H_s$ be relatively quasiconvex codimension-1 subgroups of a group $G$ that is hyperbolic relative to $P_1, \ldots, P_r$. We prove that $G$ acts relatively cocompactly on the associated dual CAT(0) cube complex $C$. This generalizes Sageev’s result that $C$ is cocompact when $G$ is hyperbolic. When $P_1,\ldots, P_r$ are abelian, we show that the dual CAT(0) cube complex $C$ has a $G$-cocompact CAT(0) truncation.

We investigate subgroups of $\text{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ which preserve an open nondegenerate convex cone in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and admit in that cone as fundamental domain a polyhedral cone of which some faces are allowed to lie on the boundary. Examples are arithmetic groups acting on self-dual cones, Weyl groups of certain Kac–Moody algebras, and they do occur in algebraic geometry as the automorphism groups of projective manifolds acting on their ample cones.
