Hitherto in matters craniological the student has been confronted with the primary difficulty that the series upon which he intends to work has been unearthed many years after burial. In consequence the question of age, sex, and nationality has remained a matter of doubt. In the present series of Hokien and Tamil skulls this difficulty has been entirely eliminated. As the skulls were collected immediately after death, the age, sex, and nationality of each is known. On removal from the body each skull had a metal tally attached to it, so that no error could arise in the process of preparation. In craniological and craniometrical work one frequently meets with the term “Chinese,” and the author is uncertain of the probable locality from which the skulls were obtained. China covers a vast expanse much larger than most people realise, and its inhabitants include a large variety of branches which vary widely in craniological features. Even in language and religion they differ, and it frequently happens that individuals living 100 miles from one another cannot understand each other's spoken language, although the written characters are identical. In fact the Hokiens call the Northern Chinese “foreigners.” The dissimilarity between the Cantonese Chinese and the Hylam Chinese skull is, I believe, as great as that between the Scottish and the German skull.

The development of non-toxic and inexpensive materials for arsenic removal is required due to water sources being polluted by arsenic in many countries around the world. The main aim of this study was to characterise the capacity and behaviour of Mg/Fe layered double hydroxides/biochar [Magnesium/Iron-Layered Double Hydroxide (Mg/Fe-LDH)] composite for arsenate adsorption from solution. Apple tree pruning residues were used to produce biochar at 500 °C under oxygen-limited atmosphere. Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar was synthesised using a spontaneous in situ co-precipitation method. Batch experiments were used for the assessment of the kinetics, isotherms, and the effects of initial solution pH (4, 6, 8, and 10), ionic strength (0.01, 0.1, and 0.2 mol L−1), and co-occurring anions (carbonate and phosphate) on the arsenate removal. Scanning electron microscope images showed Mg/Fe-LDH were loaded on the biochar porous structure, and X-ray diffraction analysis affirmed the presence of crystalline LDH minerals in Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar. Surface modification of biochar by Mg/Fe-LDH increased the maximum arsenate adsorption capacity (3.6 mg g−1) ten times compared to unmodified biochar (0.35 mg g−1). Arsenate removal capacity increased from 4.2 % to 54.2 % with modification of biochar by Mg/Fe-based LDH. Kinetic studies indicated that >90 % of Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar arsenate adsorption from a starting concentration of 10 mg L−1 occurred in the first 120 min. Pseudo-second order and Langmuir models described well the kinetics and isotherm of arsenate adsorption by biochar and Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar. Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar showed maximum arsenate removal capacity at pH 6. Increasing solution ionic strength and the presence of phosphate and carbonate anions suppressed arsenate removal by Mg/Fe-LDH-biochar. In summary, surface modification of biochar using Mg/Fe-LDH produced a potentially more cost-effective, locally available, reusable, and non-toxic arsenic adsorbent for decontamination of surface- and groundwater.

Little is known about the tooth wear of South American theropod dinosaurs. This paper describes wear facets in Abelisauridae, Carcharodontosauridae and some indeterminate theropods teeth, from the Marília Formation. Four types of wear facets are proposed: vertically-oriented attritional striations; perpendicular attritional surfaces; oval wear facets; and apical grooves. All these worn surfaces were produced by dental occlusion, except the apical grooves, which are produced by the contact between predator teeth and the prey bone during predator–prey interaction. More detailed biomechanical and hardness testing of teeth and bone may further elucidate the pattern of tooth wear in theropods.

It is not my intention to enter into any detailed description of the external characters of the several interesting organic remains which are found imbedded in the limestone of Burdiehouse, that being a task which belongs to their distinguished discoverer Dr Hibbert.

As little do I mean to describe the geological relations of the limestone bed, that being equally the province of Dr Hibbert. It will be sufficient to state generally, that it forms one of the lowest members of the carboniferous group, being inferior in position even to the Encrinal mountain limestone of its immediate vicinity; and that besides its numerous animal remains, some of which will be mentioned in the sequel, it contains throughout its entire mass numerous impressions of land and fresh-water tropical plants.

This study is concerned with the relationship between carbonisation conditions and properties of the resultant bagasse char, and the challenging proposal for the use of fine bagasse char particles as high-performance solar light collectors. Bagasse char was obtained by carbonising raw bagasse at temperatures of 200–900°C for three hours in nitrogen (N2) gas. Characterisation of the resultant bagasse char was performed by elemental analysis (EA), scanning electric microscope (SEM) observation, estimation of colour, nominal bulk density and evaluation of specific surface area and pore structure by N2 gas absorption/desorption. The most typical property of the resultant bagasse char is its unique pore structure, which is clear in SEM observation. The largest specific surface area of bagasse char in this study was about 600 m2/g, which is as large as commercial activated carbon materials. Macro-, meso- and micro-porous structures in the bagasse char induce many important characteristics, such as increased hydrophilicity, very low bulk density and excellent light absorption and accumulation. We also suggest the use of bagasse char as an excellent heat insulation material. The energy used for air conditioning in a private house or office building can be decreased by more than 50–60% by use of this insulator on the roof or walls.

In April 1846, I communicated to the Royal Society a paper on a new organic base, to which I gave the name of Picoline, and which occurs in coal-tar, associated with the Pyrrol, Kyanol, and Leukol of Runge. In that paper I pointed out that the properties of picoline resembled, in many respects, those of a base which Unverdorben had previously extracted from Dippel's animal oil, and described under the name of Odorine; and more especially mentioned their solubility in water, and property of forming crystallisable salts with chloride of gold, as characters in which these substances approximated very closely to one another. And further, I detailed a few experiments on the odorine of Unverdorben extracted from Dippel's oil, with the view of ascertaining whether or not they were actually identical, but on too small a scale to admit of a definite solution of the question.

This paper sets the wider global and Scottish context for this Special Issue of EESTRSE. Climate change is inextricably linked to wellbeing, security and sustainability. It poses a fundamental challenge to the way we organise society and our relationship to the exploitation of the Earth's resources. Rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere, linked to burning fossil fuels and land use, present a major risk of climate change, with serious but uncertain impacts emerging at a regional scale. A new industrial revolution is needed to achieve energy security and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with energy efficiency and energy production emitting low or no CO2 at its heart. At present, on a global scale, there is a mismatch between the emphasis on economic growth and the need to reduce emissions and achieve a sustainable use of resources. A more sustainable blueprint for the future is emerging in Europe and Scotland has much to gain economically and socially from this change. Scotland's ambitious emission reduction targets (42% cut by 2020 and 80% by 2050) are achievable, but require major commitment and investment. Despite success in cutting emissions from activities within Scotland, Scotland's consumption-based emissions rose by 11% in 1996–2004.

Dinosaur body fossil material is rare in Scotland, previously known almost exclusively from the Great Estuarine Group on the Isle of Skye. We report the first unequivocal dinosaur fossil from the Isle of Eigg, belonging to a Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) taxon of uncertain affinity. The limb bone NMS G.2020.10.1 is incomplete, but through a combination of anatomical comparison and osteohistology, we determine it most likely represents a stegosaur fibula. The overall proportions and cross-sectional geometry are similar to the fibulae of thyreophorans. Examination of the bone microstructure reveals a high degree of remodelling and randomly distributed longitudinal canals in the remaining primary cortical bone. This contrasts with the histological signal expected of theropod or sauropod limb bones, but is consistent with previous studies of thyreophorans, specifically stegosaurs. Previous dinosaur material from Skye and broadly contemporaneous sites in England belongs to this group, including Loricatosaurus and Sarcolestes and a number of indeterminate stegosaur specimens. Theropods such as Megalosaurus and sauropods such as Cetiosaurus are also known from these localities. Although we find strong evidence for a stegosaur affinity, diagnostic features are not observed on NMS G.2020.10.1, preventing us from referring it to any known genera. The presence of this large-bodied stegosaur on Eigg adds a significant new datapoint for dinosaur distribution in the Middle Jurassic of Scotland.

In the second volume of the Asiatic Researches, an extract is given from the Surya Siddhanta, the ancient book which has been long, though obscurely, pointed out as the source of the astronomical knowledge of the Brahmins. The Surya Siddhanta is in the Sanscrit language: It is one of the Sastras, or inspired writings of the Hindoos, and is called the Jyotish, or Astronomical, Sastra. It professes, as we learn from Mr Davis, the ingenious translator, to be a revelation from heaven, communicated to Meya, a man of great fanctity, about four millions of years ago, toward the close of the Satya Jug, or of the Golden Age of the Indian mythologists; a period at which man is said to have been incomparably better than he is at present; when his stature exceeded twenty-one cubits, and his life extended to ten thousand years.

In February 1909 Mr John Thompson, Hull, forwarded to me for identification, along with species of Hydroids, specimens of a “Pedicellina,” which he was unable to identify with any known British form. These specimens proved to be of particular interest; and although a first consignment was dead on arrival in Edinburgh, Mr Thompson was successful in obtaining additional specimens, which, having travelled safely, were kept under observation in a living state for a week, when they were preserved for more detailed examination. Cocaine was found to be the most successful narcotising agent.

The history of the habits and development of the salmon has been for ages a subject of dispute, even among men of science and experience. The general theory which prevailed regarding its earlier stage of existence was, that the spawn deposited in the autumn or beginning of winter, produced by development the smolts which were seen descending to the sea in the course of the next ensuing spring.

In regard to its after state, some supposed that the smolts which descended the rivers in spring or early summer returned as grilses that same season. Many doubted this theory, and maintained that it was impossible, or very improbable, that they should return so speedily in that greatly enlarged condition; their only argument, however, being founded on the unlikelihood of such a rapid growth.

It is well known that no satisfactory demonstration has ever been given of Fermat's celebrated theorem, which asserts that the equation an = bn + cn is impossible, if a, b, c, are whole numbers, and n is any whole number greater than 2. In Legendre's Théorie des Nombres, he demonstrates the cases of n = 3, n = 4, and n = 5, the latter only in his Second Supplement. In Crelle's Mathematical Journal, ix. 390, M. Dirichlet, a mathematician of Berlin, has demonstrated the case of n = 14, but I am not aware whether his demonstration is considered successful. Legendre informs us (Second Supplement, p. 3) that the Academy of Sciences, with the view of doing honour to the memory of Fermat, proposed, as the subject of one of its mathematical prizes, the demonstration of this theorem; but the Concourse, though prolonged beyond the usual term, produced no result.

While the external infiltration of water has been identified from modern geothermal and/or fossil hydrothermal systems through stable isotopes, the physicochemical boundary conditions like the initial oxygen isotopes of water $( {{\rm \delta }^{ 18}{\rm O}_{\rm W}^{\rm i} } ) $ and rock as well as alteration temperature were implicitly presumed or empirically estimated by the conventional forward modelling. In terms of a novel procedure proposed to deal with partial re-equilibration of oxygen isotopes between constituent minerals and water, the externally infiltrated meteoric and magmatic water are theoretically inverted from the early Cretaceous post-collisional granitoid and intruded Triassic gneissic country rock across the Dabie orogen in central-eastern China. The meteoric water with a $ {{\rm \delta }^{ 18}{\rm O}_{\rm W}^{\rm i} } $ value of −11.01 ‰ was externally infiltrated with a granitoid and thermodynamically re-equilibrated with rock-forming minerals at 140°C with a minimum water/rock (W/R)o ratio around 1.10 for an open system. The lifetime of this meteoric hydrothermal system is kinetically constrained less than 0.7 million years (Myr) via modelling of surface reaction oxygen exchange. A gneissic country rock, however, was externally infiltrated by a magmatic water with $ {{\rm \delta }^{ 18}{\rm O}_{\rm W}^{\rm i} } $ value of 4.21 ‰ at 340°C with a (W/R)o ratio of 1.23, and this magmatic hydrothermal system could last no more than 12 thousand years (Kyr) to rapidly re-equilibrate with rock-forming minerals. Nevertheless, the external infiltration of water can be theoretically inverted with oxygen isotopes of re-equilibrated rock-forming minerals, and the ancient hydrothermal systems driven by magmatism or metamorphism within continental orogens worldwide can be reliably quantified.

The non-archosauriform archosauromorph Dinocephalosaurus orientalis was first described from the Upper Member of the Guanling Formation (late Anisian, Middle Triassic) of Guizhou Province by Li in 2003 on the basis of a complete articulated skull and the first three cervical vertebrae exposed in dorsal to right lateral view. Since then, additional specimens have been discovered in southwestern China. Here, five newly discovered specimens are described for the first time, and redescriptions of the holotype IVPP V13767 and another referred specimen, IVPP V13898, are provided. Together, these permit the description of the complete skeleton of this remarkable long-necked marine reptile. The postcranial skeleton is as much as 6 metres long, and characterised by its long tail and even longer neck. The appendicular skeleton exhibits a high degree of skeletal paedomorphosis recalling that of many sauropterygians, but the skull and neck are completely inconsistent with sauropterygian affinities. The palate does not extend back over the basisphenoid region and lacks any development of the closed condition typical of sauropterygians. The arrangement of cranial elements, including the presence of narial fossae, is very similar to that seen in another long-necked archosauromorph, Tanystropheus hydroides, which at least in part represents a convergence related to an aquatic piscivorous lifestyle. The long and low cervical vertebrae support exceptionally elongate cervical ribs that extend across multiple intervertebral joints and contribute to a ‘stiffening bundle of ribs’ extending along the entire ventral side of the neck, as in many other non-crocopodan archosauromorphs. The functional significance of the extraordinarily elongate neck is hard to discern but it presumably played a key role in feeding, and it is probably analogous to the elongate necks seen in pelagic, long-necked plesiosaurs. Dinocephalosaurus orientalis was almost certainly a fully marine reptile and even gave birth at sea.

About ten months ago, I had the honour of communicating to the Royal Society, a description of a new instrument for ascertaining the Magnetic Dip. Having made very considerable improvements in the apparatus, by means of which some curious results on the magnetic laws, especially those that relate to the production and annihilation of magnetism in iron, have been obtained,—I now beg leave to submit to the Society a drawing and description of my improved instrument, together with an outline of some of the most interesting experiments made with it. Many of the results appear to me to be new; if so, their importance will be my excuse for repeating some parts of the description given in the former paper. It has been long known that iron might be rendered magnetical by percussion; but I am not aware that the precise effect of position has ever been suggested, I remain, &c.

The notice which, at the suggestion of Dr Brewster, is now to be laid before the Society, respecting a remarkable shower of hail which lately fell in Orkney, has been drawn up partly from conversations with Richard Caithness, a plain but intelligent country man, who possesses a small farm at Hunday in the island of Stronsa, and whose property suffered severely from the shower; and partly from subsequent correspondence with the Reverend William Taylor of Stronsa, whose house lay in the track of the cloud, and with Mr Robert Lindsay, Student of Divinity, who had an opportunity of witnessing the effects of the hail at Lopness, on the neighbouring island of Sanda, when the shower was nearly exhausted. They agree in all important particulars; but even at the risk of some repetition, their own words shall, as often as possible, be employed.

The morning of the 24th of July 1818, was, in Orkney, clear and warm, with a slight air of wind at due south.

The Cnoc Rhaonastil dolerite boss on Islay, NW Scotland represents a body of alkali-olivine basalt magma which differentiated at low pressure and in situ, from dolerite through teschenite to minor nepheline-syenite. The syenites occur as isolated pods and pegmatitic schlieren within the leucodolerite, and have an exotic mineralogy including Zr-aegirine, Zr-arfvedsonite, Ca-catapleiite, zirconolite and aenigmatite. Fluor-apatite occurs as an accessory phase in the dolerite, but becomes more abundant within the teschenite and syenites. Total REE contents within apatites in the dolerites are typically low (σREE = 0·57–3·21 wt.% oxide), the highest REE contents occurring in irregular, deuterically altered rims and internal patches. The REE-enriched rims also have slightly elevated SiO2 contents at 0·81–0·95 wt.%, suggesting that the substitution scheme Ca2++P5+ ⇔ REE3++Si4+ was operating. These apatites have up to 0·08 wt.% Cl and 3·7 wt.% F, with most being almost pure end-member fluor-apatite. The majority of the teschenite apatites show the least REE-enrichment (σREE = 0·27–0·45 wt.%), coupled with low Na (<0·12 wt.%) and low SiO2 (<0·39 wt.%) contents. However, within the syenites two distinct populations of apatite exist. The first, most common, variety consists of unzoned, low-REE apatites (max. 3·1 wt.% σREE, again in irregular rims and patches), whereas the second variety is often complexly zoned, and has variably enriched zones up to a maximum σREE content of 42 wt.%; this is by far the most REE-enriched natural fluor-apatite so far reported from the British Isles. The REE-enriched zones are often less than 3 μm wide, and have Na content up to 5·4 wt.% Na2O, implying that the substitution scheme Na+ + REE3+⇔2Ca2+ dominated over the more typical scheme involving Si4+ which operated in the dolerites and teschenite. Other zones are either variably enriched in Y (up 2·1 wt.% Y2O3) or Th (up to 0·85 wt.% ThO2). However, there is no correlation between Y and REE contents, suggesting that crystallographic factors were involved in apatite Y and REE partitioning. The REE-rich apatites have very low Cl content (<0·04 wt.%), but high F concentrations (<2·8 wt.%). It is believed that these strongly enriched apatites crystallised under disequilibrium conditions from isolated, variably REE-enriched domains, within the fluid-rich residual syenitic magma. These domains may have been generated by the prior crystallisation of monazite, Ca-catapleiite or zirconolite, which can be found as small inclusions within albite and interstitial analcime. The dynamic process of slumping of the denser teschenite back into the leucodolerite crystal mush is believed to have played an important role in the release of deuteric fluids and the concentration of residual magmas.

A little more than a year ago, I was led to conclude that the primitive hypoblast in pelagic Teleostean ova was derived mainly from the unsegmented protoplasm forming the floor of the segmentation cavity. In this respect my results were mainly in harmony with the researches of Lereboullet (21), Kupffer (18 and 19), Klein (16), Van Bambeke (3), and others, but opposed to the more recent investigations of Henneguy (10), Hoffmann (14), Kingsley and Conn. (15), Ryder (24), Agassiz and Whitman (1), and Cunningham (8.) At that time I adopted Agassiz and Whitman's name of periblast for the subgerminal layer containing free nuclei, though I differed from those authors in my idea of the mode of origin of the nuclei. As, however, I regard the tissues derived from this layer as belonging chiefly to the parablastic group of His and Waldeyer, I propose to return for the present to the older name of parablast. I was not enabled to trace the origin of this layer in my earlier investigations, and thus failed to grasp its significance. More recently I have had an opportunity of studying the development of several other types, particularly the herring and cod. In the herring the germinal mound is not formed until after fertilisation. Partly owing to this circumstance, and partly also to the early period at which the assimilation of yolk commences, the eggs of the herring are particularly well suited for a study of the parablast question.
