Oder adults have been stereotyped (1), both explicitly and implicitly, as being asexual or naturally lacking sexual desires (2).

The objective of this study is to analyse the perspectives of sexual unwellness (SU) of Portuguese and Slovenian older adults.

A qualitative research was carried out, in which these perceptions were analysed at a cultural level. Methods: The sample of this study consisted of 136 older participants, between 65 and 96 years of age. Participants were of two different nationalities and lived in the community. Participants were interviewed, and all interviews were carried out through the process of literal transcription and subsequent content analysis.

Eight key mutually exclusive themes emerged from the interviews: unavailability of partner; traditional values; body restrictions; low self-esteem and well-being; poor social support; dissatisfaction with physical appearance; pain during sex; and difficulties meeting new people. Unavailability of partner was the most important theme (17.9%) for the studied sample and specifically among Portuguese participants. Conversely, difficulties meeting new people was the least reported theme (6.8%) for the entire sample. For Slovenians traditional values were most relevant with respect to feeling sexually unwell.

A growing amount of studies investigating the mental health impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic worldwide have been recently published, even though very few studies investigating the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown on the mental health of fathers of newborns during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on paternal postpartum depression (PPD).

A case report describing a 37-years-old man with an obsessive-compulsive personality who manifests the onset of a clinically relevant PPD following his wife’s delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of obsessive symptomatology.

At baseline and during a 12-months follow-up were administered the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19-S), Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and Y-BOCS-II (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale).

Patient was successfully treated with vortioxetine up to 20 mg/die with a significant clinical remission of depressive and obsessive symptomatology at 6 months and a maintenance therapy with vortioxetine 10 mg daily.

PPD should be better investigated, particularly the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health of fathers of newborns during the COVID-19-related situation.

Little is known regarding how the risk of suicide in refugees relates to their host country. Specifically, to what extent, inter-country differences in structural factors between the host countries may explain the association between refugee status and subsequent suicide is lacking in previous literature.

We aimed to investigate the risk of suicide among refugees in Sweden and Norway according to their sex, age, region/country of birth and duration of residence.

Each suicide case between the age of 18-64 years during 1998 and 2018 (17,572 and 9,443 cases in Sweden and Norway, respectively) was matched with up to 20 population-based controls, by sex and age. Multivariate-adjusted conditional logistic regression models yielding adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were used to test the association between refugee status and suicide.

The aORs for suicide in refugees in Sweden and Norway were 0.5 (95% CI: 0.5-0.6) and 0.3 (95% CI: 0.3-0.4), compared with the Swedish-born and Norwegian-born individuals, respectively. Stratification by region/country of birth showed similar statistically significant lower odds for most refugee groups in both host countries except for refugees from Eritrea (aOR 1.0, 95% CI: 0.7-1.6) in Sweden. The risk of suicide did not vary much across refugee groups by their duration of residence, sex and age.

The findings of almost similar suicide mortality advantages among refugees in two host countries may suggest that resiliency and culture/religion-bound attitudes could be more influential for suicide risk among refugees than other post-migration environmental and structural factors in the host country.

According to current knowledge inflammation seems to be strongly associated with pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Multiple studies and meta-analyses showed increased levels of inflammatory markers in plasma of schizophrenia patients. Individual studies have shown a relationship between the levels of inflammatory markers and the presence of deficit syndrome, but their results are inconsistent.

Analysis of associations between inflammatory markers and the presence of deficit syndrome in schizophrenia.

Studied group consisted of 50 patients with diagnosed schizophrenia (F20) for at least 10 years, including 14 patients with deficit schizophrenia (DS) and 36 patients with non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS). DS and NDS did not differ significantly in age, BMI, duration of schizophrenia, types and doses of antipsychotics (chlorpromazine equivalent), but differed in sex (x2=4.28,p=0.039). Concentrations of inflammatory markers i.e. IL-6,IL-8,IL-10,TNFα,IFNγ,CRP were measured in serum using sensitive ELISA assays.

Initial analysis showed significantly lower concentration of IL-8 in DS compared to NDS (t=-3.18,p=0.002). This association remain significant (F=7.63,p=0.0085) after co-varying for age, sex, BMI, duration of schizophrenia, type of antipsychotic medications and antipsychotics doses. Multiple logistic regression showed that female gender (OR=0.18 [0.04-0.87],p=0.034) and higher IL-8 concentrations (OR=0.03 [0.002-0.39],p=0.007) are independent predictors of lower odds of having DS.

Low IL-8 concentrations seem to be promising predictor of the presence of DS in schizophrenia patients, but results need further investigations. Migratory flows are increasing more and more, especially regarding the refugee crisis during the last years. There are around 86,7 million migrants in Europe. Migrants share similar experiences that may affect their physical and mental health, such as loss of a social network, lack of economical support or high levels of stress and discrimination.

To analyze the obstacles that migrants must face to obtain a mental health assistance and the importance of an intercultural approach.

A narrative review of the existing literature on the subject.

Although there exists evidence that shows that migrants tend to have more health needs, they usually seek less medical advice and receive a poor-quality attention, fulfilling the inverse-care law. This is due to several reasons. Many migrants are excluded of the health care system due to bureaucratic impediments. Also, the language has a determining role, since a higher quality of communication could lead to a better understanding of the symptoms, reducing the risk of erroneous evaluations. Besides, different background and culture between the patient and the doctor can result in lack of communication, mistrust, mistreatment, poor adherence, and worse prognosis.

Despite the exponential growth of migration in the last decade and the continue progression, migrants still face many barriers to receive healthcare. It is necessary to do more research on the mental health of migrants and ethnic minorities to ensure quality care to different cultures.

We have recently validated the Portuguese shortest version of the Perinatal Depression Screening Scale-PDSS-7 (items selected from the PDSS-21; each one representing a dimension evaluated by the PDSS-35), for the assessment of depression severity in pregnancy, both in Portugal and Brazil.

To analyze the validity and reliability of the PDSS-7 Portuguese version to evaluate postpartum women both from Portugal and Brazil.

The Portuguese sample was composed of 304 women between the 2nd-6th postpartum months (Mean=20.09±7.21 weeks postpartum). These participants were not the same who participated in the psychometric study that led to the selection of the seven items. The Brazilian sample was composed of 121 women (Mean=10.51±4.53 weeks postpartum). All the participants completed the European/Brazilian Portuguese versions of PDSS-21, which was composed of the same items and included the seven items of PDSS-7. Participants also filled in the validated versions of Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale and Profile of Mood States.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed that the unidimensional model of PDSS-7 presented acceptable/good fit indexes in both samples (Portuguese/Brazilian: χ2/d.f.=2.6598/1.7897; RMSEA=.0740/.0807, CFI=.8289/.7934, TLI=.7901/.8434, GFI=.9298/.9496; p<.001). The PDSS-7 Cronbach’s alphas were of .841/.856 and all the items contributed to the internal consistency. Pearson correlations with postpartum anxiety (.646/.763) and negative affect (.666/.676) were significantly (p<.01) high. PDSS-7 mean scores were higher in the Brazilian sample (16.06±7.39 versus 11.37±4.37, p<.01).

PDSS-7 presented validity (construct and convergent), reliability and utility in clinical and research settings, including in transcultural studies, in Portugal and Brazil, namely in the postpartum.

Psychotic episodes characterized by sudden onset of polymorphous psychotic symptoms and fast resolution have been a subject of interest of many psychiatrists throughout the History. Controversies about the diagnostic criteria and nomenclature of cycloid psychoses persist nowadays, what has hampered its study. In last years, several reports associating this disease with autoimmune pathologies have been published, revealing a possible association between them.

To contribute to the knowledge of cycloid psychoses, reporting a case of motility psychoses and exploring its possible association with autoimmune diseases.

Case report and literature review.

A 48-years-old woman presents a history of eleven admissions at the Psychiatry nursery in the last nineteen years, due to psychotic episodes. Usually, these episodes follow a default in psychopharmacological therapeutic, and are characterized by rapid onset of psychomotor agitation, with prominent nonpurpuseful exuberant movements, incoherent speech, mood oscillations and polythematic delusion. Between these decompensations, she recover her normal functioning, being medicated with lithium and an antipsychotic. During one of her admissions, at 2015, she developed fever and a stuporous state. The magnetic resonance and lumbar puncture were normal, the electroencephalogram revealed generalized lentification. Autoimmunity investigation evidenced positive antithyroid antibodies (with normal thyroid function) and the echography validated the diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

This case report reveals a possible relationship between cycloid psychoses and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. We need to share more knowledge to understand if it represents a comorbidity or a pathogenic process with the same etiology, what will influence the treatment of these patients.

Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Since the outbreak, neuropsychiatric presentations such as delirium have been developing.

Our aim is to describe sociodemographic and clinical differences between inpatients cursing with Acute Confusional Syndrome (ACS) with and without COVID-19 pneumonia.

This is an observational-descriptive study. All patients attended by the liaison psychiatry service of Hospital del Mar, between February and April 2020, with ACS diagnosis were included. The sample was divided in 2 groups (with and without COVID-19 pneumonia). Sociodemographic and clinical variables including sex, age, previous somatic or psychiatric history, ACS risk factors, ACS subtype and pharmacological treatment were compared. Chi-square and U Mann Whitney tests were used.

The total sample was 62 patients. 43.5% were women with a mean age of 71,7 (SD 11,3). Covid pneumonia group included 26 patients. There was a higher percentage of Hypoxemia in Covid pneumonia patients (p<0,001). There were significant differences between Covid pneumonia group and ACS in relation to: a previous diagnosis of Ischemic Heart Disease (p=0,007), Heart Failure (p=0,029) and Nephropathy (p=0,022). Dexmedetomidine (p=0,001) was highly used for ACS treatment in Covid pneumonia patients.

In this sample, patients with ACS and Covid pneumonia had a bigger rate of hypoxemia and previous history of Ischemic Heart Disease, Heart Failure and Nephropathy compared to the rest of ACS patients. Dexmedetomidine was more commonly used for the treatment of ACS in Covid pneumonia group. More studies would be necessary to assess the significance.

Ketamine, synthesized in 1962 as phencyclidine derivate, is denominated a “dissociative anesthetic” because of its side-effects, such as dissociative episodes and psychotic-like symptoms, which have limited its applicability on clinical practice. Otherwise, in the last decades the non-medical use of ketamine has been growing and today is one of the most popular illicit substances consumed between adolescents and young adults.

Increasing the knowledge and understanding of the factors related to crescent use of ketamine and the experiences and consequences associated to its consumption.

Clinical interview with patients diagnosed with ketamine use disorder and bibliographic research in Pubmed database using the terms “Ketamine use” and “Ketamine addiction”.

Pat et al. (2002) describes a clinical case of a young male, diagnosed with substance use disorders, specifically alcohol and cocaine use disorders, that started a treatment with ketamine. After the treatment, pleasant depersonalization experiences contributed to the development of patient’s ketamine dependence. Other patient’s reports confirm the association of ketamine use with psychedelic effects and dissociative episodes and pointed these effects as main reason for its consumption.

The adverse effects that limited the medical use of ketamine are the same that promote its utilization with recreational purposes by adolescents and young adults in parties and nightclubs. About the ketamine dependence, the literature is scarce and doesn´t clearly identify a physical withdrawal syndrome, pointing only to a serious psychological dependence. Thus, with the crescent non-medical use of ketamine, it’s urgent to develop an intervention plan directed to this problem.

The prevalence of substance use disorder has rapidly increased recently. It is believed that the occurrence of mental disorders is strongly associated with substance use.

To identify prevelance of different psychiatric mobidity & symptomatology as Comorbidity amon the diagnosed patients of Substance Use Disorder

This study was conducted from June till December 2021. A total of 486 PDUs were recruited for this study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed among PDUs admitted at the Rehabilitation Centre during the period of the study. The questionnaire inquired about the demographic details of the PDUs, their substance history and the occurrence of any MDs.

The mean age of the PDUs was 25.9 + 6.0 years. A total of (95%) men and (5%) women reported their gender. There were single (74.7%), married (23.1%), divorced (1.4%) and separated (0.7%) PDUs. A large majority of the PDUs (n = 159, 55.6%) had been using different drugs for more than three years. The various MDs reported among the PDUs were delusion (n = 100, 35.2%); paranoia (n = 51, 17.8%); mania (n = 36, 12.6%); depression (n = 156, 54.5%); (n = 100, 35.2%); auditory hallucinations (n = 73, 25.7%); visual hallucinations (n = 106, 37.3%) and anxiety (n = 46, 16.2%). Among 164 cannabis users, hallucinations (n = 35, 21.3%; p = 0.04) was the only significant MD.

Delusion and paranoia were amongst the most highly prevalent MDs reported. The occurrence of auditory hallucinations, mania and paranoia were significantly associated with cannabis, heroin and cocaine use, respectively.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is recognized as an effective treatment for anxiety disorders. Transdiagnostic group CBT (tCBT) targets cognitive and behavioural intervention strategies common to anxiety disorders. tCBT allows the treatment of a larger number of patients simultaneously and therapists only need to master a single intervention protocol. However, tCBT may present several challenges for therapists, particularly regarding group management.

To explore therapists’ perceptions and experience of group management during tCBT for mixed anxiety disorders.

A qualitative study embedded in a randomized controlled trial of group tCBT (Roberge & Provencher; CIHR, 2015-2021). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 of the 21 therapists to document their perceptions and to identify improvements for tCBT delivery. The data were analyzed using a deductive approach and based on the interactive cyclical process of data reduction, display and conclusion drawing.

Therapists raised the challenge of the heterogeneous characteristics of participants’ anxious profile, since they had to be creative to provide exercises that were suitable for a whole group. Exposure exercises, a key component of tCBT, were particularly affected by the composition of the groups. Previous group animation experience and the ability to establish a therapeutic alliance from a group perspective were important facilitators. Co-therapy also facilitated the intervention, since it allowed the therapists to be more vigilant to group dynamics and favored the organization of tCBT.

This study highlights the importance of exploring therapists’ perceptions and experience about group management in order to identify facilitators and barriers of group tCBT in community-based care.

In 2019 there were 1,760 patients in Denmark’s hospitals who experienced cardiac arrest (IHCA patients = In Hospital Cardiac Arrest patients). Of these patients about 70% survived. There is only limited knowledge about the mental and cognitive state of cardiac arrest survivors. However, it seems, that cardiac arrest survivors, perform mentally and cognitively worse compared to the background population. The mental and cognitive difficulties can lead to reduced quality of life for both those affected and their relatives.

Because the above-mentioned area has limited knowledge, further studies are needed to shed more light into the problem.

To find out if the patients can be included in the study, the patient journals will be studied. After that there will be performed an interview-survey-based study, in which IHCA patients’ possible symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicide risk, the patients’ quality of life and any cognitive disorder, shortly after and three months after cardiac arrest, will be examined. The study will also, if possible, focus on the patients’ relatives and on the eventual difficulties they may experience in the aftermath of a relative surviving a cardiac arrest. The above-mentioned will be done using already existing relevant psychiatric and neuropsychological examination tools. In relation to the patients’ relatives, however, a separate survey tool, that has been developed, will be used.

It is an ongoing study. Results are expected in 2023.

In the long run the study hopefully can contribute to establishing relevant help, counseling and rehabilitation for the patients and relatives affected.

Numerous studies point to a high effectiveness of psychosocial rehabilitation using psychopharmacological treatment, psychosocial methods and spiritually oriented care technologies.

Description of the experience of using a spiritually oriented approach in complex rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders.

Clinical, pathopsychological, statistic. The study involved two groups of patients with illness (ICD-10 F 20.04 – F 20.05, F25.х, F21.3-21.4, F 33.4, F31.7, F32.2 – 18 patients) and comorbid addictive disorders (ICD-10 F10.2х1- F10.2х2 - 17 patients). “The Social Adjustment Scale–Self-Report SAS-SR” (М. Weissman, S. Bothwell, 1976); “Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short form health survey” (SF-36, John E.Ware, 1992); “Methodology of the severity of anti-drug potential” (Kopeyko G.I. et al, 2018); “The Scale of Religiosity” (Kaz’mina O.Y., 2000) were used to assess the effectiveness.

All patients received psychopharmacological treatment and participated in rehabilitation work in patient community organizations using psychosocial and spiritually oriented therapy. The rehabilitation program included psychoeducation, skills training, group and individual psychotherapy, social activity. Spiritually oriented assistance was realized in the tradition of dialogical approach (Florenskaya T.A., 1992) and included conversations on Evangelical topics, work in therapeutic groups on the principles of a religious community. Longer remission times, a social functioning improvement, a tendency to change lifestyle based on the values of religious worldview, anti-drug potential increase and a higher understanding of religious life with an orientation towards internal religiosity were revealed among the participants of complex rehabilitation program.

Perspective of using biopsychosociospiritual approach in psychiatry in work with patients with schizophrenia and patients with comorbid addictive disorders was shown.

Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is an emotional disorder characterized by uncontrollable outbursts of laughing and/or crying. It is caused by lesions that damage pathways in the frontal lobe and descending to the brain stem, basis pontis and cerebellum. The main causes are neurodegenerative diseases.

To present a case of PBA secondary to cerebral toxoplasmosis.

The present study is a case report of a patient admitted for HIV-related toxoplasmosis to our hospital. We also researched previous case reports of PBA secondary to CNS infection using a pubmed query.

Mr. JA is a 38-year-old male, with no prior psychiatric or medical history. He reported having had same-sex sexual encounters previously. He was admitted for ataxia and dysarthria in a medical unit, and diagnosed of HIV infection, with a CD4 count of 19 cells/μL. The MRI showed a lesion of 22x19x18mm with ring enhancement predominantly in basis pontis, compatible with toxoplasmosis(Image1). Treatment with sulfadiazine, pyrimethamine and dexamethasone was initiated. After five days of hospitalization he was referred to Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry for involuntary and uncontrollable outbursts of laughing and crying, insomnia, but no other psychopathological symptoms. Therefore, citalopram 20mg per day was started, with reduction on the frequency of outbursts.

The clinical presentation suggested the diagnosis of PBA due to cerebral toxoplasmosis. Although we found no previous reports of PBA related to HIV infection or toxoplasmosis, the location of the toxoplasmosis lesion is congruent with the typical damaged pathways in PBA. To our knowledge, this is the first report about PBA secondary to HIV-related toxoplasmosis.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is considered one of the most disabling mental illnesses with significant family, social and occupational repercussions resulting in impaired quality of life (QOL).

To assess the QOL of patients with SCZ or schizoaffective disorder (SAD) and to analyze the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with its alteration.

This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study, which began in December 2019, conducted with 60 subjects followed for SCZ or SAD, at the psychiatry outpatient unit of the Hedi Chaker University Hospital in Sfax (Tunisia). General, clinical and therapeutic data were collected using a pre-established questionnaire. QOL was assessed with the «36 item Short-Form Health Survey» (SF-36).

Patients enrolled had SCZ in 78.2% and SAD in 21.8% of cases. The mean age was 47.2 years and the sex ratio M/F was 4.5. They were single in 63.7% of cases and unemployed in 61.8%. Psychiatric family history, the presence of personal somatic illnesses and tobacco use were found in 43.6%, 61.8% and 67.3% of cases, respectively. The average QOL score was 57.7, the average physical health score was 61.1, and the average mental health score was 54.3. Female sex (p=0.02), being single (p=0.039), lack of work activity (p=0.00), tobacco use (p=0.05), and presence of medical history (p=0.034) were statistically correlated with impaired QOL.

QOL in SCZ and SAD is impaired. This result encourages us to conceive of the patient in his whole life and not only from the point of view of the disease.

People with mental illness (MI) have a reduced life expectancy compared to the general population, mostly attributable to somatic diseases caused by poor physical health. Lifestyle factors (exercise, sleep, diet, substance use) are associated with poor physical and mental health. Although lifestyle factors, and physical and mental health are believed to be interconnected, research has mainly focused on one-sided relationships. Currently, we are implementing a lifestyle focussed approach in treatment, in which we assess lifestyle factors as well as physical and mental health of people with MI on a large scale (˜850 places of residence).

To investigate the association between lifestyle factors, and physical and mental health in people with MI.

Baseline data from an open cohort cluster randomized stepped wedge study. Lifestyle factors (exercise, sleep, diet, substance use), physical health, medication use and psychological health (symptoms, quality of life) were assessed using data from patient files and questionnaires. Associations will be analysed with network analyses.

First results (N≈1600) show that 54% of patients have high blood pressure, 51% have excessive waist circumference, 46% are experiencing sleep problems, 71% smoke and 88% do not meet exercise guidelines. Patients experience a lower quality of life compared to the general population.

Initial results show that patients have poor physical health, low quality of life and an unhealthy lifestyle. Further analyses are currently being conducted to gain insight in the complex pattern between lifestyle factors, and physical and mental health. This can contribute to the improvement of routine clinical care.

Clozapine is one of the most effective antipsychotic drugs. On the other hand, it can cause serious side effects which have to be monitored. An adverse effect is myocarditis, a type B Clozapine reaction that can be fatal if it is not early diagnosed.

To report a case of a patient with Clozapine induced myocarditis.

A 48 years old women with a schizoaffective disorder was admitted to our Hospital due to a clinical decompensation. She had a manic episode with psychotic symptoms (persecutory delusions and auditive hallucinations). Clozapine was introduced after there were no improvement with Olanzapine, Risperidone and Valproic Acid. A dose increase was made reaching 100 mg/day the first week and 200 mg/day the second week. The third week she started with a 39ºC fever, decreased oxygen saturation, leukocytosis (9560 103/mm3), elevated PCR (210 mg/l) and elevated troponins (52,88 ng/l). EKG and other medical tests did not show alterations. There was not found a clear etiology, so Clozapine was retired as a cautionary measure. The differential diagnosis for etiology included viral infections, Clozapine induced myocarditis or idiopathic.

A few days after the withdrawal of Clozapine, cardiac symptoms improved, suggesting it was the most probable etiology.

Although it is not very likely to occur, it is important to consider myocarditis as a sever Clozapine side effect.

The use of Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during pregnancy and in the post-partum period is a critical decision for both providers and their patients. ECT utilization during this critical period needs to be better understood to assess the need and allocate resources for this valuable treatment option.

1) To evaluates baseline characteristics and analyze ECT utilization trends for pregnant and post-partum patients hospitalized in the US. 2) To provide insight into ECT use among inpatient pregnant women with different age groups with various comorbid psychiatric disorders.

The study used the 2002-2015 National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS) data. Descriptive statistical and trend analyses were conducted to evaluate data.

A study found that a total of 924 pregnancy-related hospitalizations required ECT treatment; 92.2% of these ECTs were conducted in urban hospitals. The mean age of women was 30.3 years, and the majority (71%) were of the White race. Mood disorders (major depressive disorder- 51.9% and bipolar disorder- 37.9%) accounted for the most common comorbid psychiatric illnesses. The payer source (Medicare/Medicaid vs. Private Insurance) was almost equal (47.9 vs. 46.8). Though not statistically significant, the trend analysis showed that the proportion of ECTs during pregnancy out of the total ECT performed for the year almost doubled (0.24% to 0.47%) from 2008 to 2015.

Though not statistically significant, the use of ECT in pregnant women has increased in 2015 compared to 2002. Results will help clinicians, policymakers, and various stakeholders to optimize ECT utilization, reimbursement and ultimately improve clinical outcomes.

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) to measure retinal thickness is the current method to observe neurological impairment in neurodegenerative diseases [1] and in mental disorders [2] due to the composition of the retina itself as an anatomic extension of the brain.There can be found some factors to improve the resilience like the years of study.

Our aim is to evaluate cognitive and clinical impairment in Bipolar Disorder and see the correlation to the retinal thinning.

Twenty-seven patients diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder were assessed in the context of the FINEXT programme (3). Selective attention, executive functions and verbal memory were measured among other variables. Using the OCT technique, we measured the thickness of the ppRNFL, the RFNL, GCL and IPL layers in the macula in both eyes through several radial segments. Partial correlations were performed with Bonferroni correction (p≤0.006) adjusted for age and academic status except for the variable years of study which was adjusted for age.

Significant direct correlations were observed between: - The study-years and the thickness of the retina in the NO and RFNL. -Selective attention and GCL and RFNL layers. -Executive function and the GCL and IPL.

We can observe some preliminar results showing a significant correlation between some layers of the retina, upper segments more frequently, and the outcomes of the neurocognitive assessment. We can see a relationship as well between years of study and the thickness of the Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer in the retina and optic nerve head, the axons of the neurons in the eye.

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants thanks to the overall safety and tolerability spectrum. However, they can cause different side effects that not all of them are well identified.

We intend to clarify the clinical presentation of mydriasis caused by Escitalopram.

Reporting the case of a patient suffering a major depressive disorder, that presented a mydriasis after adjusting her antidepressant medication. Then, we conducted a literature review using “PubMed” database and keywords “Mydriasis”, “escitalopram”, “SSRI”,” side effects”.

A 29-year-old female with no past clinical history, presented in May 2021 a severe depression requiring an antidepressant treatment. Under 10 mg per day of escitalopram there was a partial remission of the symptoms, leading to increase the dose by another 10 mg. One month after taking 20 mg/day, she consults before the appointment suffering from a blurry vision and photophobia. Ophthalmologic examination showed a bilateral reactive half-mydriasis, eye pressure was 14 mmHg and fundus examination was normal. Iatrogenic origin of mydriasis was suspected. A gradual interruption of the medication lead to disappearance of the latter. A pharmacological investigation concluded to the suspension of escitalopram and to be vigilant if antidepressant medication would be needed.

Mydriasis is an uncommon side effect caused by SSRI that needs to be kept in mind by clinicians. Therapeutic patient education can help to detect abnormal side effects and treat them if needed.
