Let X be a Klein surface [1], that is, X is a surface with boundary მX together with a dianalytic structure on X. A homeomorphism f: X → X of X onto itself that is dianalytic will be called an automorphism of X.

In 1953, Pjateckii˘-S˘apiro has proved that there are infinitely many primes of the form [n^c] for 1 [less than] c [less than] {12\over11} (with an asymptotic result). This range, which measures our progress in the technique of exponential sums, has been improved by many authors. In this paper we obtain 1 [less than] c\leq{243\over205}.

In this note we answer two question posed by Berkani and Koliha [Acta Sci. Math.69 (2003), 359–376]. We show that generalized Browder's (resp. generalized $a$-Browder's) theorem holds for a Banach space operator if and only if Browder's (resp. $a$-Browder's) theorem does. We also give condition under which generalized Weyl's (resp. generalized $a$-Weyl's) theorem is equivalent to Weyl's (resp. $a$-Weyl's) theorem.

In this paper we use the Bourbaki conventions for rings and modules: all rings are associative but not necessarily commutative and have an identity element; all modules are unital.

We extend to Lie algebroids the notion variously known as a double Lie algebra (Lu and Weinstein), matched pair of Lie algebras (Majid), or twilled extension of Lie algebras (Kosmann-Schwarzbach and Magri). It is proved that a matched pair of Lie groupoids induces a matched pair of Lie algebroids. Conversely, we show that under certain conditions a matched pair of Lie algebroids integrates to a matched pair of Lie groupoids. The importance of matched pairs of Lie algebroids has been recently demonstrated by Lu.

The numerical range of a bounded linear operator A on a complex Hilbertspace H is the set W(A) = {(Af, f): ║f║ = 1}. Because it is convex andits closure contains the spectrum of A, the numerical range is often a useful toolin operator theory. However, even when H is two-dimensional, the numerical range of an operator can be large relative to its spectrum, so that knowledge of W(A) generally permits only crude information about A. P. R. Halmos [2] has suggested a refinement of the notion of numerical range by introducing the k-numerical ranges

for k = 1, 2, 3, …. It is clear that W1(A) = W(A). C. A. Berger [2] has shown that Wk(A) is convex.

In recent developments in the algebraic theory of semigroups attention has been focussing increasingly on the study of congruences, in particular on lattice-theoretic properties of the lattice of congruences. In most cases it has been found advantageous to impose some restriction on the type of semigroup considered, such as regularity, commutativity, or the property of being an inverse semigroup, and one of the principal tools has been the consideration of special congruences. For example, the minimum group congruence on an inverse semigroup has been studied by Vagner [21] and Munn [13], the maximum idempotent-separating congruence on a regular or inverse semigroup by the authors separately [9, 10] and by Munn [14], and the minimum semilattice congruence on a general or commutative semigroup by Tamura and Kimura [19], Yamada [22], Clifford [3] and Petrich [15]. In this paper we study regular semigroups and our primary concern is with the minimum group congruence, the minimum band congruence and the minimum semilattice congruence, which we shall consistently denote by α β and η respectively.

There are some simple facts which distinguish Lie-algebras over fields of prime characteristic from Lie-algebras over fields of characteristic zero. These are

(1) The degrees of the absolutely irreducible representations of a Lie-algebra of prime characteristic are bounded whereas, according to a theorem of H. Weyl, the degrees of the absolutely irreducible representations of a semi-simple Lie-algebra over a field of characteristic zero can be arbitrarily high.

(2) For each Lie-algebra of prime characteristic there are indecomposable representations which are not irreducible, whereas every indecomposable representation of a semi-simple Liealgebra over a field of characteristic zero is irreducible (cf. [4]).

(3) The quotient ring of the embedding algebra of a Lie-algebra over a field of prime characteristic is a division algebra of finite dimension over its center, whereas this is not the case for characteristic zero. (cf. [4]).

(4) There are faithful fully reducible representations of every Lie-algebra of prime characteristic, whereas for characteristic zero only ring sums of semi-simple Lie-algebras and abelian Lie-algebras admit faithful fully reducible representations (cf. [6], [2], [4]).

A module M is called poor whenever it is N-injective, then the module N is semisimple. In this paper the properties of poor modules are investigated and are used to characterize various families of rings.

It is sometimes possible to reconstruct semigroups from some of their homomorphic images. Some recent examples have been the construction of bisimple inverse semigroups from fundamental bisimple inverse semigroups [9], and the construction of generalized inverse semigroups from inverse semigroups [12].

We use σ_a(T) andσ_{ea}(T) , respectively, to denote the approximate point spectrum and the essential approximate point spectrum of a bounded operator T onX . Also, \pi _a(T) denotes the set <$>{\rm{iso} σ_a(T)\backslash σ_{ea}(T)}<$>. An operator T onX obeys the a-Browder's theorem provided that<$>σ_{ea}(T) =σ_a(T\,)\backslash π_a(T)<$> . We investigate connections between the Browder's theorems, the spectral mapping theorem and spectral continuity.

Using the definition of a Riemann surface, as given for example by Ahlfors and Sario, one can prove that all Riemann surfaces are orientable. However by modifying their definition one can obtain structures on non-orientable surfaces. In fact nonorientable Riemann surfaces have been considered by Klein and Teichmüller amongst others. The problem we consider here is to look for the largest possible groups of automorphisms of compact non-orientable Riemann surfaces and we find that this throws light on the corresponding problem for orientable Riemann surfaces, which was first considered by Hurwitz [1]. He showed that the order of a group of automorphisms of a compact orientable Riemann surface of genus g cannot be bigger than 84(g – 1). This bound he knew to be attained because Klein had exhibited a surface of genus 3 which admitted PSL (2, 7) as its automorphism group, and the order of PSL(2, 7) is 168 = 84(3–1). More recently Macbeath [5, 3] and Lehner and Newman [2] have found infinite families of compact orientable surfaces for which the Hurwitz bound is attained, and in this paper we shall exhibit some new families.

The closed graph theorem is one of the deeper results in the theory of Banach spaces and one of the richest in its applications to functional analysis. This note contains an extension of the theorem to certain classes of topological vector spaces. For the most part, we use the terminology and notation of N. Bourbaki [1], contracting “locally convex topological vector space over the real or complex field” to “convex space”; here we confine ourselves to convex spaces.

By using the bilinear technique of soliton theory, a pfaffian version of the SU(2) self-dual Yang-Mills equation and its solution is constructed.

In this work, oscillatory and asymptotic behaviours of all solutions of higher-order neutral differential equations are compared with first-order delay differential equations, depending on two different ranges of the coefficient associated with the neutral part. Some simple examples are given to compare our results with the existing results in the literature and to illustrate the significance and applicability of our new results. Our results generalise, improve and correct some of the existing results in the literature.

The statical Reissner-Sagoci problem [1, 2, 3] is that of determining the components of stress and displacement in the interior of the semi-infinite homogeneous isotropic elastic solid z ≧ 0 when a circular area (0 ≦ p ≦ a, z = 0) of the boundary surface is forced to rotate through an angle a about an axis which is normal to the undeformed plane surface of the medium.
