Let G be a group. We denote the Whitehead group of G by Wh G and the projective class group of the integral group ring ℤ(G) of G by . Let α be an automorphism of G and T an infinite cyclic group. Then we denote by G ×αT the semidirect product of G and T with respect to α. For undefined terminologies used in the paper, we refer to [3] and [7].

Definitions and introduction. Let Ц = {Ui|i ∈ I} be a system of subsets of a normal topological space R; i.e. a mapping from the index set I into the set of all subsets of R. The order of a point x is the number of distinct member sets of Ц which contain x, and is denoted by x: Ц; the sets Ui are here considered distinct if they have distinct indices. Thus x: Ц is the number of indices i for which x ∈ Ui; ν(Ц) = max {x: Ц | x ∈ R} is called the order of the system Ц. If every point has an (open) neighbourhood meeting only finitely many members of Ц, then Ц is said to be locally finite.

The purpose of this note is to answer in the affirmative a long standing open question raised by Singal and Singal — whether every almost continuous function is closure continuous (θ-continuous).

In [9] L. Moser classified all manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery on torus knots. In particular she proved the following (see also [8, Chapter IV]).

Theorem 1 [9]. Nontrivial surgery with slope m/n on a nontrivial torus knot T(p, q) gives a manifold with cyclic fundamental group iff m = npq ± 1 and the manifold obtained is the lens space L(m, nq2).

We show that every fibrewise map from a Serre microfibration to a Serre fibration is n-connected if it is fibrewise n-connected. This generalises a result of M. Weiss and related results by Bökstedt–Madsen and Galatius–Randal–Williams. We also discuss an application to configuration spaces.

For any rotation-invariant positive regular Borel measure ν on the closed unit ball whose support contains the unit sphere , let L2a be the closure in L2 = L2(, dν) of all analytic polynomials. For a bounded Borel function f on , the Toeplitz operator Tf is defined by Tf(ϕ) = P(fϕ) for ϕ ∈ L2a, where P is the orthogonal projection from L2 onto L2a. We show that if f is continuous on , then Tf is compact if and only if f(z) = 0 for all z on the unit sphere. This is well known when L2a is replaced by the classical Bergman or Hardy space.

Let Y be a subspace of a topological space X. Then S(X, Y) denotes the semigroup, under composition, of all continuous selfmaps of X which also carry Y into Y. In the special case Y = X, the simpler notation S(X)is used. We have devoted several recent papers ([4], [7] and [8]) to the problem of determining when S(Z) and S(X, Y)are isomorphic and, more generally, when S(Z) is a homomorphic image of S(X, Y). In this paper, we investigate the analogous problem for certain semigroups of functions on spaces which were introduced in [5]. These include semigroups of closed functions which are treated in further detail.

Following Craw, Maclagan, Thomas and Nakamura's works[2, 7] on Hilbert schemes for abelian groups, we give an explicit description of theHilbGℂ3 scheme for G = 〈diag(ϵ, ϵa, ϵr−a)〉 by a classification of all G-sets. We describe how the combinatorial properties of the fan of HilbGℂ3 relates to the Euclidean algorithm.

The concept of cleft extensions, or equivalently of crossed products, for a Hopf algebra is a generalization of Galois extensions with normal basis and of crossed products for a group. The study of these subjects was founded independently by Blattner-Cohen-Montgomery [1] and by Doi-Takeuchi [4]. In this paper, we determine the isomorphic classes of cleft extensions for a infinite dimensional non-commutative, non-cocommutative Hopf algebra kq[X, X–l, Y], which is generated by a group-like element X and a (1,X)-primitive element Y. We also consider the quotient algebras of the cleft extensions.

It is easy to imagine that a subvariety of a vector bundle, whose intersection with every fibre is a vector subspace of constant dimension, must necessarily be a sub-bundle. We give two examples to show that this is not true, and several situations in which the implication does hold. For example it is true if the base is normal and the field has characteristic zero. A convenient test is whether or not the intersections with the fibres are reduced as schemes.

In [1] the following question was posed by R. W. Irving (see also Conjecture 4.10 in [4]): Is there an edge 2-colouring of the complete bipartite graph K13.17 with no monochromatic K3.3? We give a negative answer in this note (Theorem 2). Furthermore we prove Conjecture 4.11 (i) of [4] (Theorem 1), that is, any edge 2-coloured K2n+i,4n-3 contains a monochromatic K2,n with the 2 and n vertices a subset of the 2n +1 and 4n–3 vertices, respectively. Theorem 1 is a consequence of Satz 4 in [3], however, we give a direct proof here.

Let $\mathcal{M}$ and G denote, respectively, the maximal operator and the geometric maximal operator associated with the dyadic lattice on $\mathbb{R}^d$.

1. (i) We prove that for any 0 < p < ∞, any weight w on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and any measurable f on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we have Fefferman–Stein-type estimate

   For each p, the constant e1/p is the best possible.

2. (ii) We show that for any weight w on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and any measurable f on $\mathbb{R}^d$,

   and prove that the constant e is optimal.

Let Y be a compact nonsingular real algebraic variety of positive dimension. Then one can find a compact connected nonsingular real algebraic variety X, which admits a continuous map into Y that is not homotopic to any regular map. It is hard to determine the minimum dimension of such a variety X. In this paper, new upper bounds for dim X are obtained. The main role in the constructions is played by complex algebraic cycles on Y.

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the following systems of ordinary differential equations:

where the identically zero function is a solution of (N) i.e. f(t, 0)=0 for all time t. Suppose one knows that all the solutions of (N) which start near zero remain near zero for all future time or even that they approach zero as time increases. For the perturbed systems (P) and (P1) the above property concerning the solutions near zero may or may not remain true. A more precise formulation of this problem is as follows: if zero is stable or asymptotically stable for (N), and if the functions g(t, x) and h(t, x) are small in some sense, give conditions on f(t, x) so that zero is (eventually) stable or asymptotically stable for (P) and (P1).

In [1, Corollary 5], Figiel gives an elegant demonstration that the modulus ofconvexity δ in real Banach space X is nondecreasing, where

It is deduced from this that in fact δ(ɛ)/ɛ is nondecreasing [Proposition 3]. During the course of the proof [Lemma 4] it is stated that if v ∊ Sx is a local maximum on Sx of φ ∈Sx*, then v is a global maximum (φ(v) = 1). This is false; it could be that v is a global minimum. It is easy to construct such an example in R2 endowed with the maximum norm. What is true is that v is a global maximum of |φ|.

We construct cocompact lattices Γ'0 < Γ0 in the group G = PGLd$({\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)\!})$ which are type-preserving and act transitively on the set of vertices of each type in the building Δ associated to G. These lattices are commensurable with the lattices of Cartwright–Steger Isr. J. Math.103 (1998), 125–140. The stabiliser of each vertex in Γ'0 is a Singer cycle and the stabiliser of each vertex in Γ0 is isomorphic to the normaliser of a Singer cycle in PGLd(q). We show that the intersections of Γ'0 and Γ0 with PSLd$({\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)\!})$ are lattices in PSLd$({\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)\!})$, and identify the pairs (d, q) such that the entire lattice Γ'0 or Γ0 is contained in PSLd$({\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)\!})$. Finally we discuss minimality of covolumes of cocompact lattices in SL3$({\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)\!})$. Our proofs combine the construction of Cartwright–Steger Isr. J. Math.103 (1998), 125–140 with results about Singer cycles and their normalisers, and geometric arguments.

This paper is about the connection between certain Banach-algebraic properties of a commutative Banach algebra E with unit and the associated commutative Banach algebra C(X, E) of all continuous functions from a compact Hausdorff space X into E. The properties concern Ditkin's condition and bounded relative units. We show that these properties are shared by E and C(X, E). We also consider the relationship between these properties in the algebras E, B and $\~{B}$ that appear in the so-called admissible quadruples (X, E, B, $\~{B}$).

We study the conditions which force a semiperfect ring to admit a Nakayama permutation of its basic idempotents. We also give a few necessary and sufficient conditions for a semiperfect ring R, which cogenerates every 2-generated right R-module, to be right pseudo-Frobenius.

We use a result of Y. Furuta to show that for almost all positive integers m, the cyclotomic field has an infinite Hilbert p-class field tower with high rank Galois groups at each step, simultaneously for all primes p of size up to about (log logm)1 + o(1). We also use a recent result of B. Schmidt to show that for infinitely many m there is an infinite Hilbert p-class field tower over for some p≥m0.3385 + o(1). These results have immediate applications to the divisibility properties of the class number of .

In this paper we introduce a vector-valued uncentred maximal operator in the setting of one-dimensional Bessel–Kingman hypergoups, and prove a maximal theorem for it.
