The unsteady response of nozzles with steady heat transfer forced by acoustic and/or entropy waves is modelled. The approach is based on the quasi-one-dimensional linearised Euler equations. The equations are cast in terms of three variables, namely the dimensionless mass, stagnation temperature and entropy fluctuations, which are invariants of the system at zero frequency and with no heat transfer. The resulting first-order system of differential equations is then solved using the Magnus expansion method, where the perturbation parameters are the normalised frequency and the volumetric heat transfer. In this work, a measure of the flow non-isentropicity (in this case the steady heat transfer) is used for the first time as an expansion parameter. The solution method was applied to a converging–diverging nozzle with constant heat transfer for both subcritical and supercritical flow cases, showing good agreement with numerical predictions. It was observed that the acoustic and entropy transfer functions of the nozzle strongly depend on the frequency and heat transfer.

A scaling law to predict the onset of the primary Hopf instability in the steady flow past two-dimensional symmetric bluff bodies is proposed. It uses a measure of the spatial extent of the separation bubble as the length scale and the largest reverse-flow speed within it as the velocity scale. The ensuing Reynolds number, evaluated at the onset of the primary Hopf bifurcation, collapses quite nicely for bodies of different shape and aspect ratio even when a small angle of attack perturbs the symmetry; its relative variation is one order of magnitude smaller than that of the usual Reynolds number defined with the free-stream velocity and the cross-stream body size. With the new scaling, it can be roughly assessed whether the steady flow past a two-dimensional bluff body is absolutely and globally unstable to two-dimensional perturbations without a computationally expensive stability analysis: only the inspection of the base flow is required. More importantly, the scaling provides an insight into the flow mechanism that produces the instability.

We present a non-perturbative mesh-free spectral method for the axisymmetric scenario of a radially highly deformed sphere in Stokes flow. Spectra of harmonic and biharmonic Stokes flow modes are used to provide a general algebraic spectral solution to axisymmetric Stokes flow. A solution for the flow field around a sphere with prescribed surface velocity field is presented, and is used to obtain the velocity field around a deformed sphere. The method is demonstrated on two problems: hydrodynamic radii of radially deformed spheres for a range of strength and angular dependence of the deformation, with results in good agreement with the boundary element method; and self-phoretic velocity of spheroids with surface flux of the driving field in a source/sink or source/inert configuration.

Using simulations and a virtual-spring-based approach, we measure the segregation force, $F_{seg},$ in size-bidisperse sphere mixtures over a range of concentrations, particle-size ratios and shear rates to develop a semiempirical model for $F_{seg}$ that extends its applicability from the well-studied non-interacting intruders regime to finite-concentration mixtures where cooperative phenomena occur. The model predicts the concentration below which the single-intruder assumption applies and provides an accurate description of the pressure partitioning between species.

Results from seven direct and large-eddy simulations of gravity currents on slopes ranging from 0.14$^{\circ }$ to 2.86$^{\circ }$ that span from the subcritical to the supercritical regime are studied. By considering a long domain, attention is focused on the near-self-similar state approached by these currents far downstream. In the self-similar limit, the various shape factors, local Richardson number, entrainment coefficient, velocity scale and basal drag coefficient reach a constant value, while the current height, volume and momentum fluxes continue to increase linearly. Their dependence on slope is presented.

Multiphase flow in porous materials is conventionally described by an empirical extension to Darcy's law, which assumes that the pressure gradient is proportional to the flow rate. Through a series of two-phase flow experiments, we demonstrate that even when capillary forces are dominant at the pore scale, there is a nonlinear intermittent flow regime with a power-law dependence between pressure gradient and flow rate. Energy balance is used to predict accurately the start of the intermittent regime in hydrophobic porous media. The pore-scale explanation of the behaviour based on the periodic filling of critical flow pathways is confirmed through 3D micron-resolution X-ray imaging.

The thermal resistance associated with the interface between a solid and a liquid is analysed from an atomistic point of view. Partial evaluation of the associated Green–Kubo integral elucidates the various factors governing heat transport across the interface and leads to a quantitative model for the thermal resistance in terms of atomistic-level system parameters. The model is validated using molecular dynamics simulations.

The interplay between chemical reaction and substrate deformation is discussed by adapting Ranz's formulation for scalar mixing to the case of a reactive mixture between segregated reactants, initially separated by an interface whose thickness may not be vanishingly small. Experiments in a simple shear flow demonstrate the existence of three regimes depending on the Damköhler number $Da=t_s/t_c$ where $t_s$ is the mixing time of the interface width and $t_c$ is the chemical time. Instead of treating explicitly the chemical cross-term, we rationalize these different regimes by globalizing it as a production term involving a flux which depends on the rate at which the reaction zone is fed by the reactants, a formulation valid for $Da>1$. For $Da<1$, the reactants interpenetrate before they react, giving rise to a ‘diffusio-chemical’ regime where chemical production occurs within a substrate whose width is controlled by molecular diffusion.

The central open question about Rayleigh–Bénard convection – buoyancy-driven flow in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above – is how vertical heat flux depends on the imposed temperature gradient in the strongly nonlinear regime where the flows are typically turbulent. The quantitative challenge is to determine how the Nusselt number $Nu$ depends on the Rayleigh number $Ra$ in the $Ra\to \infty$ limit for fluids of fixed finite Prandtl number $Pr$ in fixed spatial domains. Laboratory experiments, numerical simulations and analysis of Rayleigh's mathematical model have yet to rule out either of the proposed ‘classical’ $Nu \sim Ra^{1/3}$ or ‘ultimate’ $Nu \sim Ra^{1/2}$ asymptotic scaling theories. Among the many solutions of the equations of motion at high $Ra$ are steady convection rolls that are dynamically unstable but share features of the turbulent attractor. We have computed these steady solutions for $Ra$ up to $10^{14}$ with $Pr=1$ and various horizontal periods. By choosing the horizontal period of these rolls at each $Ra$ to maximize $Nu$, we find that steady convection rolls achieve classical asymptotic scaling. Moreover, they transport more heat than turbulent convection in experiments or simulations at comparable parameters. If heat transport in turbulent convection continues to be dominated by heat transport in steady rolls as $Ra\to \infty$, it cannot achieve the ultimate scaling.

The instability and dynamics of a vertical oscillatory boundary layer in a container filled with a stratified fluid are addressed. Past experiments have shown that when the boundary oscillation frequency is of the same order as the buoyancy frequency, the system is unstable to a herringbone pattern of oblique waves. Prior studies assuming the basic state to be a unidirectional oscillatory shear flow were unable to account for the oblique waves. By accounting for confinement effects present in the experiments, and the ensuing three-dimensional structure of the basic state, we are able to numerically reproduce the experimental observations, opening the door to fully analysing the impacts of stratification on such boundary layers.

Fluid entering the periphery of a steadily rotating cylindrical tank exits through an off-axis drain hole, located in the tank's base at the half-radius. Experiments show that, though a concentrated vortex forms over the drain, it soon advects around the tank in what is at first a circular path. Though inviscid vortex dynamics predicts continued motion, our experiments show that the vortex moves inwards from the predicted circular path, finally coming to rest at approximately $50^{\circ }$ from the drain. In this final state, the vorticity is concentrated in a thin shear layer bounding an irrotational core, which passes over the drain. The broadening of the vortex structure and eventual steady-state formation are believed to be due to the growing boundary layer on the outer wall.

This numerical study presents a simple but extremely effective way to considerably enhance heat transport in turbulent wall-bounded multiphase flows, namely by using oleophilic walls. As a model system, we pick the Rayleigh–Bénard set-up, filled with an oil–water mixture. For oleophilic walls, using only $10\,\%$ volume fraction of oil in water, we observe a remarkable heat transport enhancement of more than $100\,\%$ as compared to the pure water case. In contrast, for oleophobic walls, the enhancement is only of about $20\,\%$ as compared to pure water. The physical explanation of the heat transport increment for oleophilic walls is that thermal plumes detach from the oil-rich boundary layer and carry the heat with them. In the bulk, the oil–water interface prevents the plumes from mixing with the turbulent water bulk and to diffuse their heat. To confirm this physical picture, we show that the minimum amount of oil necessary to achieve the maximum heat transport is set by the volume fraction of the thermal plumes. Our findings provide guidelines of how to optimize heat transport in wall-bounded thermal turbulence. Moreover, the physical insight of how coherent structures are coupled with one of the phases of a two-phase system has very general applicability for controlling transport properties in other turbulent wall-bounded multiphase flows.

Flow in the inverted U-shaped tube of a conventional siphon can be established and maintained only if the tube is filled and closed, so that air does not enter. We report on siphons that operate entirely open to the atmosphere by exploiting surface tension effects. Such capillary siphoning is demonstrated by paper tissue that bridges two containers and conveys water from the upper to the lower. We introduce a more controlled system consisting of grooves in a wetting solid, formed here by pressing together hook-shaped metallic rods. The dependence of flux on siphon geometry is systematically measured, revealing behaviour different from the conventional siphon. The flux saturates when the height difference between the two container's free surfaces is large; it also has a strong dependence on the climbing height from the source container's free surface to the apex. A one-dimensional theoretical model is developed, taking into account the capillary pressure due to surface tension, pressure loss due to viscous friction, and driving by gravity. Numerical solutions are in good agreement with experiments, and the model suggests hydraulic interpretations for the observed flux dependence on geometrical parameters. The operating principle and characteristics of capillary siphoning revealed here can inform biological phenomena and engineering applications related to directional fluid transport.

Direct numerical simulation of spanwise-rotation-driven flow transitions in viscoelastic plane Couette flow from a drag-reduced inertial to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent flow state followed by full relaminarization is reported for the first time. Specifically, this novel flow transition begins with a drag-reduced inertial turbulent flow state at a low rotation number $0\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.1$, and then transitions to a rotation/polymer-additive-driven drag-enhanced inertial turbulent regime, $0.1\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.3$. In turn, the flow transitions to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent state, $0.3\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.9$, and eventually relaminarizes at $Ro=1$. In addition, two novel rotation-dependent drag enhancement mechanisms are proposed and substantiated. (1) The formation of large-scale roll cells results in enhanced convective momentum transport along with significant polymer elongation and stress generated in the extensionally dominated flow between adjacent roll cells at $Ro\leqslant 0.2$. (2) Coriolis-force-generated turbulent vortices cause strong incoherent transport and homogenization of significant polymer stress in the bulk via their vortical circulations at $Ro=0.5 - 0.9$.

The wake of a notchback Ahmed body presenting a bi-stable nature is investigated by performing wind tunnel experiments and large-eddy simulations. Attention is confined to the Reynolds number ($Re$) influence on the wake state instability within $5\times 10^{4}\leq Re \leq 25\times 10^{4}$. Experimental observations suggest a wake bi-stability with low-frequency switches under low $Re$. The wake becomes ‘tri-stable’ with the increase of $Re$ with the introduction of a new symmetric state. The higher presence of the symmetric state can be considered as a symmetrization of the wake bi-stability with an increasing $Re$. The wake symmetry under high $Re$ attributed to the highly frequent switches of the wake is extremely sensitive to small yaw angles, showing the feature of bi-stable flows. The wake asymmetry is confirmed in numerical simulations with both low and high $Re$. The wake asymmetries are indicated by the wake separation, the reattachment and the wake dynamics identified by the proper orthogonal decomposition. However, the turbulence level is found to be significantly higher with a higher $Re$. This leads to a higher possibility to break the asymmetric state, resulting in highly frequent switches showing symmetry.

Rayleigh–Taylor instability of a thin liquid film overlying a passive fluid is examined when the film is attached to a periodic wavy deep corrugated wall. A reduced-order long-wave model shows that the wavy wall enhances the instability toward rupture when the interface pattern is sub-harmonic to the wall pattern. An expression that approximates the growth constant of instability is obtained for any value of wall amplitude for the special case when the wall consists of two full waves and the interface consists of a full wave. Nonlinear computations of the interface evolution show that sliding is arrested by the wavy wall if a single liquid film residing over a passive fluid is considered but not necessarily when a bilayer sandwiched by a top wavy wall and bottom flat wall is considered. In the latter case interface tracking shows that primary and secondary troughs will evolve and subsequently slide along the flat wall due to symmetry-breaking. It is further shown that this sliding motion of the interface can ultimately be arrested by the top wavy wall, depending on the holdup of the fluids. In other words, there exists a critical value of the interface position beyond which the onset of the sliding motion is observed and below which the sliding is always arrested.

We describe a mechanism that leads to the spontaneous formation of a thermohaline staircase in the high-latitude oceans. Our analysis of this mechanism is based upon a model in which uniform gradients of temperature and salinity are assumed and is applied to a simplified mean-field model of stratified turbulence. Detailed analysis employs a parametrization of turbulent diapycnal diffusivities (Bouffard & Boegman, Dyn. Atmos. Oceans, vol. 61, 2013, pp. 14–34). This parametrization is apparently unique in that it distinguishes between the diapycnal diffusivities for heat and salt on the basis of their Prandtl (Schmidt) numbers. Our model predicts that the temperature and salinity profiles will be susceptible to linear instability if the buoyancy Reynolds number lies in the range 0.18–91, and a nonlinear mean-field model simulation demonstrates that it evolves into a well-defined thermohaline staircase that matches the characteristics of those found in the high-latitude oceans. The criterion for initial instability is furthermore shown to be consistent with the observed regional variability of staircase occurrence in the Arctic Ocean as determined by the most recent observational datasets.

It is shown that shape anisotropy and intrinsic surface slip lead to equilibrium tilt of slippery particles in a creeping simple shear flow, even for nearly shape-isotropic particles with a cross-section that is close to circular provided the Navier-slip length is sufficiently large. We study a rigid particle with an elliptical cross-section, and of infinite extent in the vorticity direction, in simple shear. A Navier-slip boundary condition is imposed on its surface. When a Navier-slip length parameter $\lambda$ is infinite, an analytical solution is derived for the Stokes flow around a particle tilting in equilibrium at an angle $(1/2)\cos ^{-1}((1-k)/(1+k))$ to the flow direction where $0 \le k \le 1$ is the ratio of the semi-minor to semi-major axes of its elliptical cross-section. A regular perturbation analysis about this analytical solution is then performed for small values of $1/\lambda$ and a numerical continuation method implemented for larger values. It is found that an equilibrium continues to exist for any anisotropic particle $k < 1$ provided $\lambda \ge \lambda _{crit}(k)$ where $\lambda _{crit}(k)$ is a critical Navier-slip length parameter determined here. As the case $k \to 1$ of a circular cross-section is approached, it is found that $\lambda _{crit}(k) \to \infty$, so the range of Navier-slip lengths allowing equilibrium tilt shrinks as shape anistropy is lost. Novel theoretical connections with equilibria for constant-pressure gas bubbles with surface tension are also pointed out.

The wake of a finite wall-mounted circular cylinder of diameter $D$ and height $H$ is investigated for aspect ratios $3\leq H/D \leq 7$ and boundary layer thickness of $\delta /D \approx 0.98$ using tomographic particle image velocimetry. The Reynolds number based on $D$ is $Re = 750$. The mean wake topology is related to the evolution of the periodically shed vortices, educed from a low-order representation based on proper orthogonal decomposition of the three-dimensional velocity field. The main topological features are an arch vortex, defining the recirculating base region, and a quadrupole structure consisting of two pairs of opposite-sign vorticity concentrations extending downstream behind the obstacle-free end and wall junction. The quadrupole is the time-averaged signature of shed vortices. Vortex-tilting terms in the base region act to reorient flow-normal vorticity components streamwise, resulting in the reorientation of the ends of vortices initially shed parallel to the cylinder side walls. Through the action of the vortex-stretching terms, the bent ends connect successive vortices in a continuous chain. The influence of $H/D$ on the development of the quadrupole is characterized. The results demonstrate that the quadrupole in the mean field emerges as an imprint of the shed full-loop structures. This work reconciles mean and instantaneous interpretations satisfying the solenoidal condition on the vorticity field.

Direct numerical simulations have been performed for heat and momentum transfer in internally heated turbulent shear flow with constant bulk mean velocity and temperature, $u_{b}$ and $\theta _{b}$, between parallel, isothermal, no-slip and permeable walls. The wall-normal transpiration velocity on the walls $y=\pm h$ is assumed to be proportional to the local pressure fluctuations, i.e. $v=\pm \beta p/\rho$ (Jiménez et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 442, 2001, pp. 89–117). The temperature is supposed to be a passive scalar, and the Prandtl number is set to unity. Turbulent heat and momentum transfer in permeable-channel flow for the dimensionless permeability parameter $\beta u_b=0.5$ has been found to exhibit distinct states depending on the Reynolds number $Re_b=2h u_b/\nu$. At $Re_{b}\lesssim 10^4$, the classical Blasius law of the friction coefficient and its similarity to the Stanton number, $St\approx c_{f}\sim Re_{b}^{-1/4}$, are observed, whereas at $Re_{b}\gtrsim 10^4$, the so-called ultimate scaling, $St\sim Re_b^0$ and $c_{f}\sim Re_b^0$, is found. The ultimate state is attributed to the appearance of large-scale intense spanwise rolls with the length scale of $O(h)$ arising from the Kelvin–Helmholtz type of shear-layer instability over the permeable walls. The large-scale rolls can induce large-amplitude velocity fluctuations of $O(u_b)$ as in free shear layers, so that the Taylor dissipation law $\epsilon \sim u_{b}^{3}/h$ (or equivalently $c_{f}\sim Re_b^0$) holds. In spite of strong turbulence promotion there is no flow separation, and thus large-amplitude temperature fluctuations of $O(\theta _b)$ can also be induced similarly. As a consequence, the ultimate heat transfer is achieved, i.e. a wall heat flux scales with $u_{b}\theta _{b}$ (or equivalently $St\sim Re_b^0$) independent of thermal diffusivity, although the heat transfer on the walls is dominated by thermal conduction.
