In this study, we focus on Langmuir turbulence in the deep ocean with the presence of a large macroalgal farm using a large eddy simulation method. The wave–current interactions are modelled by solving the wave-averaged equations. The hydrodynamic process over the farm is found to drive a persistent flow pattern similar to Langmuir circulations but is locked in space across the farm. These secondary circulations are generated because the cross-stream shear produced by the rows of canopy elements leads to a steady vertical vorticity field, which is then rotated to the downstream direction under the effect of vortex force. Since the driving mechanism is similar to the Craik–Leibovich type 2 instability theory, these secondary circulations are also termed as attached Langmuir circulations. We then apply a triple decomposition on the flow field to unveil the underlying kinematics and energy transfer between the mean flow, the secondary flow resulting from the farm drag and the transient eddies. Flow visualizations and statistics suggest that the attached Langmuir circulations result from the adjustment of the upper ocean mixed layer to the macroalgal farm, and they will weaken (if not disappear) when the flow reaches an equilibrium state within the farm. The triple-decomposed energy budgets reveal that the energy of the secondary flow is transferred from the mean flow under the action of canopy drag, while the transient eddies feed on wave energy transferred by the Stokes drift and energy conversion from the secondary flow.

Turbulent mixing layers in nature are often characterised by the presence of a mean shear and an unstable buoyancy gradient between two streams of different velocities. Depending on the relative strength of shear versus buoyancy, either the former or the latter may dominate the turbulence and mixing between the two streams. In this paper, we present a phenomenological theory that leads to the identification of two distinct turbulent regimes: an early regime, dominated by mean shear, and a later regime dominated by buoyancy. The main theoretical result consists of the identification of a cross-over timescale that distinguishes between the shear- and the buoyancy-dominated turbulence. This cross-over time depends on three large-scale constants of the flow, namely, the buoyancy difference, the velocity difference between the two streams and the gravitational acceleration. We validate our theory against direct numerical simulations of a temporal turbulent mixing layer compounded with an unstable stratification. We observe that the cross-over time correctly predicts the transition from shear- to buoyancy-driven turbulence, in terms of turbulent kinetic energy production, energy spectra scaling and mixing layer thickness.

Flowing granular materials exhibit several features that distinguish them from molecular fluids. A prominent feature is dilatancy, or volume deformation caused by shear deformation. Its significance in sustained flow has not been much appreciated, as its effect was thought to be confined to thin shear layers. However, it was demonstrated recently by Krishnaraj & Nott (Nat. Commun., vol. 7, 2016, 10630) that dilatancy drives a large-scale secondary flow in a cylindrical Couette device. They hypothesized that the combination of shear and gravity, when their directions are non-collinear, is necessary for the occurrence of the secondary flow. In this paper we investigate the phenomenon by considering a more complex primary flow generated in a split-bottom Couette device, wherein a part of the base of the container filled with a granular material is translated or rotated. It is known from previous studies that the height to which the material is filled determines the shape and extent of the shearing region in the primary flow. We show that the fill height also determines the form of the secondary flow, and argue that the two are intricately coupled and evolve together. Though the secondary flow is more complex than in a cylindrical Couette device, the mechanism is indeed what Krishnaraj & Nott hypothesized: the combined effect of dilatancy driven expansion, and gravity-driven flow down regions of low density. Unlike fluid instabilities that are typically driven by inertia, the secondary flow occurs at arbitrarily low shear rate and appears to be an integral part of the kinematic response.

Many key environmental, industrial and energy processes rely on controlling fluid transport within subsurface porous media. These media are typically structurally heterogeneous, often with vertically layered strata of distinct permeabilities – leading to uneven partitioning of flow across strata, which can be undesirable. Here, using direct in situ visualization, we demonstrate that polymer additives can homogenize this flow by inducing a purely elastic flow instability that generates random spatio-temporal fluctuations and excess flow resistance in individual strata. In particular, we find that this instability arises at smaller imposed flow rates in higher-permeability strata, diverting flow towards lower-permeability strata and helping to homogenize the flow. Guided by the experiments, we develop a parallel-resistor model that quantitatively predicts the flow rate at which this homogenization is optimized for a given stratified medium. Thus, our work provides a new approach to homogenizing fluid and passive scalar transport in heterogeneous porous media.

The subtle but crucial effects of large-scale forcing on the small-scale velocity-gradient (VG) dynamics is examined using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of incompressible turbulence. The interplay among large-scale forcing, inertia, pressure and viscous effects is characterised as a function of local streamline geometry and VG magnitude (Frobenius norm). When conditioned on local topology, forcing: (i) counteracts inertial and viscous action in the strain-dominated nodal topologies; and (ii) balances pressure action in the rotation-dominated unstable focal topologies. Unexpectedly, forcing acts to reduce VG magnitudes in regions of strong dissipation. In these regions, forcing balances the non-local pressure effects whereas viscous action offsets the nonlinear inertial effects. In regions of very low dissipation, forcing combines with inertia and pressure effects to offset viscous action. With regard to the probability distribution of the normalised VG invariants, the primary role of forcing is to nullify certain features (dilatational probability currents) of inertia, pressure and viscous action. This results in the emergence of universal statistical features (solenoidal probability currents) that are determined largely by inertia–pressure–viscous interactions. These findings serve to enhance our understanding of small-scale processes in turbulence and guide VG model development.

A classic lift decomposition (Von Kármán & Sears, J. Aeronaut. Sci., vol. 5, 1938, pp. 379–390) is conducted on potential flow simulations of a near-ground pitching hydrofoil. It is discovered that previously observed stable and unstable equilibrium altitudes are generated by a balance between positive wake-induced lift and negative quasi-steady lift while the added mass lift does not play a role. Using both simulations and experiments, detailed analyses of each lift component's near-ground behaviour provide further physical insights. When applied to three-dimensional pitching hydrofoils the lift decomposition reveals that the disappearance of equilibrium altitudes for ${A{\kern-4pt}R}\ {\rm (aspect\ ratio)} <1.5$ occurs due to the magnitude of the quasi-steady lift outweighing the magnitude of the wake-induced lift at all ground distances. Scaling laws for the quasi-steady lift, wake-induced lift and the stable equilibrium altitude are discovered. A simple scaling law for the lift of a steady foil in ground effect is derived. This scaling shows that both circulation enhancement and the velocity induced at a foil's leading edge by the bound vortex of its ground image foil are the essential physics to understand steady ground effect. The scaling laws for unsteady pitching foils can predict the equilibrium altitude to within $20\,\%$ of its value when $St\ {\rm (Strouhal\ number)} < 0.45$. For $St \ge 0.45$ there is a wake instability effect, not accounted for in the scaling relations, that significantly alters the wake-induced lift. These results not only provide key physical insights and scaling laws for steady and unsteady ground effects, but also for two schooling hydrofoils in a side-by-side formation with an out-of-phase synchronization.

The effect of surfactants on the flow characteristics during rapid drop formation in a microchannel is investigated using high-speed imaging, micro-particle image velocimetry and numerical simulations; the latter are performed using a three- dimensional multiphase solver that accounts for the transport of soluble surfactants in the bulk and at the interface. Drops are generated in a flow-focusing microchannel, using silicone oil ($4.6$ mPa s) as the continuous phase and a 52 % w/w glycerol solution as the dispersed phase. A non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) is dissolved in the dispersed phase at concentrations below and above the critical micelle concentration. Good agreement is found between experimental and numerical data for the drop size, drop formation time and circulation patterns. The results reveal strong circulation patterns in the forming drop in the absence of surfactants, whose intensity decreases with increasing surfactant concentration. The surfactant concentration profiles in the bulk and at the interface are shown for all stages of drop formation. The surfactant interfacial concentration is large at the front and the back of the forming drop, while the neck region is almost surfactant free. Marangoni stresses develop away from the neck, contributing to changes in the velocity profile inside the drop.

A computational study is presented on cross-stream migration and focusing of deformable capsules in curved microchannels of square and rectangular sections under inertial and non-inertial regimes. The numerical methodology is based on immersed boundary methods for fluid–structure coupling, a finite-volume-based flow solver and finite-element method for capsule deformation. Different focusing behaviours in the two regimes are predicted that arise due to the interplay of inertia, deformation, altered shear gradient, streamline curvature effect and secondary flow. In the non-inertial regime, a single-point focusing occurs on the central plane, and at a radial location between the interior face (i.e. face with highest curvature) of the channel and the location of zero shear. The focusing position is nearly independent of capsule deformability (represented by the capillary number, $Ca$). A two-step migration is observed that is comprised of a faster radial migration, followed by a slower migration toward the centre plane. The focusing location progressively moves further toward the interior face with increasing curvature and width, but decreasing height. In the inertial regime, single-point focusing is observed near the interior face for channel Reynolds number $Re_{C}\sim {O}(1)$, that is also highly sensitive to $Re_{C}$ and $Ca$, and moves progressively toward the exterior face with increasing $Re_{C}$ but decreasing $Ca$. As $Re_{C}$ increases by an order, secondary flow becomes stronger, and two focusing locations appear close to the centres of the Dean vortices. This location becomes practically independent of $Ca$ at even higher inertia. The inertial focusing positions move progressively toward the exterior face with increasing channel width and decreasing height. For wider channels, the equilibrium location is further toward the exterior face than the vortex centre.

The propagation of a normal shock wave along a coupled convex–concave surface of equal radii has been analysed experimentally and numerically in this study. The experimental and numerical studies were conducted using a similar geometry as of that used by Ram et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 768, 2015, pp. 219–239) for studying the shock wave transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection. Many interesting flow features such as shock wave transitions over the ramp, characteristics of the induced flow behind the shock wave and the development of a stationary separation shock wave have been observed in the study. The numerical results are validated with experimental data. While the shock wave transitions over the ramp are found to depend mainly on the ramp geometry, the characteristics of the stationary shock wave and the flow separation in the concave region of the ramp surface have been found to vary with the shock wave Mach numbers.

Direct numerical simulation of spanwise-rotation-driven flow transitions in viscoelastic plane Couette flow from a drag-reduced inertial to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent flow state followed by full relaminarization is reported for the first time. Specifically, this novel flow transition begins with a drag-reduced inertial turbulent flow state at a low rotation number $0\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.1$, and then transitions to a rotation/polymer-additive-driven drag-enhanced inertial turbulent regime, $0.1\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.3$. In turn, the flow transitions to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent state, $0.3\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.9$, and eventually relaminarizes at $Ro=1$. In addition, two novel rotation-dependent drag enhancement mechanisms are proposed and substantiated. (1) The formation of large-scale roll cells results in enhanced convective momentum transport along with significant polymer elongation and stress generated in the extensionally dominated flow between adjacent roll cells at $Ro\leqslant 0.2$. (2) Coriolis-force-generated turbulent vortices cause strong incoherent transport and homogenization of significant polymer stress in the bulk via their vortical circulations at $Ro=0.5 - 0.9$.

We examine a turbulent distributed wall-source plume: the flow resulting from a uniform vertical wall source of buoyancy such as that produced by an evenly heated or cooled vertical wall. The vertically distributed buoyancy source is created by forcing dense salt water solution through a porous wall. Velocity measurements on a vertical plane normal to the wall are first presented examining the full height of the wall in order to identify the region in which the bulk flow has become fully turbulent, self-similar and reached an invariant balance between the fluxes of volume, momentum and buoyancy. Simultaneous velocity and buoyancy field measurements are then presented in this region and an entrainment coefficient of $\alpha = 0.068 \pm 0.006$ is determined. This value is small compared to that of buoyancy-driven unbounded flows, e.g. a free line plume, and we reason this to be due to the presence of a rigid boundary restricting meandering and turbulence production, rather than the effect of the vertically distributed source of buoyancy. Turbulent velocity and buoyancy statistics are presented and, in order to gain physical insights into the flow behaviour, the results are compared to those of other canonical buoyancy-driven free and wall-bounded flows. We show that the bulk mixing of distributed wall-source plumes can be captured by consideration of the characteristic vertical velocities and a constant entrainment coefficient. This mixing is inhibited both by the presence of a rigid boundary and the reduced characteristic velocities (compared to those of wall line plumes).
