When a suspension of conducting particles is subjected to a shear flow, there is particle rotation due to the fluid vorticity. A conductor rotating in a uniform magnetic field experiences a torque due to eddy currents both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of rotation. Eddy currents induce a magnetic moment in a conducting particle, which disturbs the magnetic field around the particle. The effect of the Maxwell stress due to the magnetic field disturbance on the rheology of a dilute suspension is calculated in a manner similar to the Einstein viscosity for a suspension of rigid particles. The expression for the stress tensor contains three symmetric stress coefficients, and two normal stress coefficients, in addition to the three antisymmetric stress coefficients calculated in Kumaran (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 871, 2019, pp. 139–185). The stress coefficients depend on the relative orientation of the vorticity and magnetic field and two dimensionless parameters, $\beta$, the product of the vorticity and current relaxation time, and $\Sigma$, the ratio of the magnetic and hydrodynamic torques. In the ‘linear’ approximation, where only terms linear in the particle magnetic moment are retained, the particle stress depends on two dimensionless functions. For the physically important limit $\beta \ll 1$, as well as the limit $\beta \gg 1$ and $\Sigma \gg 1$, these two functions are independent of the vorticity, and depend only on the magnetic field and material properties.

Morphodynamic equations governing the behaviour of active nematic fluids on deformable curved surfaces are constructed in the large deformation limit. Emphasis is placed on the formulation of objective rates that account for normal deformations whilst ensuring that tangential flows are Eulerian, and the use of the surface derivative (rather than the covariant derivative) in the nematic free energy, which elastically couples local order to out-of-plane bending of the surface. Focusing on surface geometry and its dynamical interplay with the hydrodynamics, several illustrative instabilities are then characterised. These include cases where the role of the Scriven–Love number and its nematic analogue are non-negligible, and where the active nematic forcing can be characterised by an analogue of the Föppl–von Kármán number. For the former, flows and changes to the nematic texture are coupled to surface geometry by viscous dissipation. This is shown to result in non-trivial relaxation dynamics for a nematic tube. For the latter, the nematic active forcing couples to the surface bending terms of the nematic free energy, resulting in extensile (active ruffling) and contractile (active pearling) instabilities in the tube shape, as well as active bend instabilities in the nematic texture. In comparison to the flat case, such bend instabilities now have a threshold set by the extrinsic curvature of the tube. Finally, we examine a topological defect located on an almost flat surface, and show that there exists a steady state where a combination of defect elasticity, activity and non-negligible spin connection drive a shape change in the surface.

We experimentally investigate the forced synchronization of a self-excited chaotic thermoacoustic oscillator with two natural frequencies, $f_1$ and $f_2$. On increasing the forcing amplitude, $\epsilon _f$, at a fixed forcing frequency, $f_f$, we find two different types of synchronization: (i) $f_f/f_1 = 1:1$ or $2:1$ chaos-destroying synchronization (CDS), and (ii) phase synchronization of chaos (PSC). En route to $1:1$ CDS, the system transitions from an unforced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2}$) to a forced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2,f}$), then to a two-frequency quasiperiodic state where chaos is destroyed ($\mathbb {T}^2_{2,f}$), and finally to a phase-locked period-1 state (${\rm {P1}}_f$). The route to $2:1$ CDS is similar, but the quasiperiodic state hosts a doubled torus $(2\mathbb {T}^2_{2,f})$ that transforms into a phase-locked period-2 orbit $({\rm {P2}}_f)$ when CDS occurs. En route to PSC, the system transitions to a forced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2,f}$) followed by a phase-locked chaotic state, where $f_1$, $f_2$ and $f_f$ still coexist but their phase difference remains bounded. We find that the maximum reduction in thermoacoustic amplitude occurs near the onset of CDS, and that the critical $\epsilon _f$ required for the onset of CDS does not vary significantly with $f_f$. We then use two unidirectionally coupled Anishchenko–Astakhov oscillators to phenomenologically model the experimental synchronization dynamics, including (i) the route to $1:1$ CDS, (ii) various phase dynamics, such as phase drifting, slipping and locking, and (iii) the thermoacoustic amplitude variations in the $f_f/f_1$–$\epsilon _f$ plane. This study extends the applicability of open-loop control further to a chaotic thermoacoustic system, demonstrating (i) the feasibility of using an existing actuation strategy to weaken aperiodic thermoacoustic oscillations, and (ii) the possibility of developing new active suppression strategies based on both established and emerging methods of chaos control.

The hydrodynamics of turbulent oscillatory flow over a gravel-based irregular rough wall is investigated using laser-Doppler anemometry measurements of velocities in a large oscillatory flow tunnel and direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier–Stokes equations. The same periodic irregular roughness was used for both experiments and DNS. Four flow shapes are investigated: sinusoidal, skewed, asymmetric and combined skewed–asymmetric. The experiments were conducted for target Reynolds numbers (based on the Stokes length and standard deviation of free-stream velocity) of $R_{\delta,\sigma }=800$ and $R_{\delta,\sigma }=1549$; DNS was conducted for flows with target $R_{\delta,\sigma }=800$. Boundary layer thickness, bottom phase lead and friction factor are in good agreement with previous studies. For the first time, evidence of Prandtl's secondary flows of the second kind in oscillatory flow is presented. Turbulence structure is visualised using isosurfaces of $\lambda _{2}$ (Jeong & Hussain J. Fluid Mech., vol. 285, 1995, pp. 69–94), revealing densely packed structures that grow stronger and weaker in correspondence with the free-stream velocity. Reynolds and dispersive stresses peak just below the highest roughness crest, with dispersive stress vanishing a short distance above the roughness. Bursts of turbulence kinetic energy and wake kinetic energy are generated each flow half-cycle, with variable behaviour depending on flow shape. Non-Gaussian turbulence statistics are observed that originate near the wall, becoming increasingly non-Gaussian far from the wall. Probability density functions of turbulence statistics can be closely approximated by a fourth-order Gram–Charlier distribution at most phases and elevations, though when statistics deviate more strongly from Gaussian, streamwise and wall-normal (spanwise) statistics are better described by a Pearson type IV (VII) distribution.

A numerical study on the response of a two-dimensional bluff body wake subjected to harmonic forcing imposed by two rear pitching flaps is performed. The wake is generated by a rectangle at a height-based Reynolds number $Re=100$, characterised by laminar vortex shedding. Two forcing strategies are examined corresponding to in-phase ‘snaking’ and out-of-phase ‘clapping.’ The effects of the bluff body aspect ratio ($AR=1,2,4$), flapping frequency, flapping amplitude, flap length and Reynolds number are investigated. For the snaking motion, a strong fundamental resonance of the root mean square (r.m.s.) drag is observed when the wake is forced near the vortex shedding frequency. For the clapping motion, a weak subharmonic resonance is observed when the forcing is applied near twice the vortex shedding frequency resulting in an increase of the lift r.m.s. whereas the drag r.m.s. remains unaffected. Both resonances intensify the vortex shedding and a concomitant mean drag increase is observed for the snaking motion. Forcing away from the resonant regimes, both motions result in considerable drag reduction through wake symmetrisation and propulsion mechanisms. The formation of two vortex dipoles per oscillation period due to the flapping motion, which weaken the natural vortex shedding, has been identified as the main symmetrisation mechanism. A single scaling parameter is proposed to collapse the mean drag reduction of the forced flow for both motions over a wide range of flapping frequencies, amplitudes and flap lengths. Finally, the assessment of the performance of the forcing strategies has revealed that clapping is more effective than snaking.

Experimental studies of the influence of fluid–structure interaction on cloud cavitation about a stiff stainless steel (SS) and a flexible composite (CF) hydrofoil have been presented in Parts I (Smith et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 896, 2020a, p. A1) and II (Smith et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 897, 2020b, p. A28). This work further analyses the data and complements the measurements with reduced-order model predictions to explain the complex response. A two degrees-of-freedom steady-state model is used to explain why the tip bending and twisting deformations are much higher for the CF hydrofoil, while the hydrodynamic load coefficients are very similar. A one degree-of-freedom dynamic model, which considers the spanwise bending deflection only, is used to capture the dynamic response of both hydrofoils. Peaks in the frequency response spectrum are observed at the re-entrant jet-driven and shock-wave-driven cavity shedding frequencies, system bending frequency and heterodyne frequencies caused by the mixing of the two cavity shedding frequencies. The predictions capture the increase of the mean system bending frequency and wider bandwidth of frequency modulation with decreasing cavitation number. The results show that, in general, the amplitude of the deformation fluctuation is higher, but the amplitude of the load fluctuation is lower for the CF hydrofoil compared with the SS hydrofoil. Significant dynamic load amplification is observed at subharmonic lock-in when the shock-wave-driven cavity shedding frequency matches with the nearest subharmonic of the system bending frequency of the CF hydrofoil. Both measurements and predictions show an absence of dynamic load amplification at primary lock-in because of the low intensity of cavity load fluctuations with high cavitation number.

We study the axisymmetric evolution of a liquid film on a solid sphere governed by gravity, capillarity and viscous forces. The lubrication equations established in spherical coordinates are numerically solved using finite elements and local similarity solutions are obtained. Results show that the evolution behaves differently at early and late stages. At the early stage, the interface evolves in such a way that the capillary effect can be ignored. At the late stage, there emerge four zones from top to bottom: a thin film, a ridge ring, a dimple ring and a pendant drop. Each zone is governed by the balance of different forces, and hence is characterized by an individual physical mechanism. Consequently, the pendant drop is quasi-static, and the film thicknesses of other regions follow different scaling laws. The position of the dimple remains unchanged at the late stage.

The impact of a hydrogel sphere onto a granular target results in both the deformation of the sphere and the formation of a prominent topographic feature known as an impact crater on the granular surface. We investigate the crater formation and scaling, together with the spreading diameter and post-impact dynamics of spheres by performing a series of experiments, varying the Young's modulus $Y$ and impact speed $U_{0}$ of the hydrogel spheres, and the packing fraction and grain size of the granular target. We determine how the crater diameter and depth depend on $Y$ and show the data to be consistent with those from earlier experiments using droplets and hard spheres. Most specifically, we find that the crater diameter data are consistent with a power law, where the power exponent changes more sharply when $Y$ becomes less than 200 Pa. Next, we introduce an estimate for the portion of the impact kinetic energy that is stored as elastic energy during impact, and thus correct the energy that remains available for crater formation. Subsequently, we determine the deformation of the hydrogel spheres and find that the normalized spreading diameter data are well collapsed introducing an equivalent velocity from an energy balance of the initial kinetic energy against surface and elastic energy. Finally, we observe that under certain intermediate values for the Young's modulus and impact velocities, the particles rebound from the impact crater. We determine the phase diagram and explain our findings from a comparison of the elastocapillary spreading time and the impact duration.

Oscillatory flows have the potential to overcome long-standing limitations encountered when using steady flows for inertial focusing due to low particle Reynolds numbers. The periodic displacement generated by oscillatory flow increases the total path length travelled by a suspended particle with no net displacement within a channel or the need for increased channel length. The effects of unsteady inertial forces on inertial focusing, however, have not been thoroughly examined. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study on the effect of Womersley number on inertial focusing in planar pulsatile flows. The migration velocity for a small and weakly inertial particle was evaluated for different oscillation frequencies using the method of matched asymptotics. Using experiments in a custom-built microchannel, we show that oscillatory flows are remarkably efficient for inertial focusing, even at low particle Reynolds numbers. For appropriately selected oscillation amplitude and frequency, inertial focusing is achieved in only a fraction of the channel length (1 % to 10 %) compared to what would be required in a steady flow. We show that the Womersley number influences the equilibrium focusing position and the overall focusing efficiency. In fact, above a critical Womersley number, inertial focusing does not occur despite increasing particle Reynolds number. Lastly, the application of oscillatory inertial focusing for the direct measurement of particle migration velocity is demonstrated.

The present work investigates the linear instability of three-dimensional boundary layers in thermodynamically non-ideal regimes. As a representative fluid, we consider carbon dioxide at supercritical pressure (80 bar). The flow set-up is matched to the redesigned DLR (German Aerospace Center) experiment on cross-flow instability, with identical pressure-coefficient distribution (accelerating the flow), sweep angle and Reynolds number, at a low Mach number. The flow temperature relative to the Widom line – also known as the pseudocritical line – thus characterises the non-ideality of the flow. We consider supercritical (gas-like), subcritical (liquid-like) and transcritical (pseudoboiling) regimes, where the flow temperature remains above, below or crosses the Widom line. The stability analyses of the parabolised Navier–Stokes baseflows indicate that wall heating destabilises the flow in the supercritical regime while wall cooling stabilises both effects similar to the ideal-fluid situation but being stronger. On the contrary, wall heating/cooling exhibits reversed effects in the subcritical regime, like for an ideal liquid. In the transcritical regime, with its sharp gradients of the thermodynamic and transport properties, wall heating stabilises the flow. Most substantially, however, wall cooling provokes a changeover of the leading instability mechanism: the accelerated streamwise flow attains inflectional wall-normal profiles, and the invoked inviscid Tollmien–Schlichting instability prevails with growth rates up to one order of magnitude larger than those of the cross-flow mode. We establish a two-fold mathematical relation from the momentum equation that explains the consequence of non-ideality and wall heating/cooling. The streamwise perturbation patterns of the flows in their linear instability regime are shown by mimicking wave trains emanating from virtual point-disturbance sources. From the viewpoint of keeping laminar flows, the transcritical thermodynamic state with a cooling wall must be avoided.

Droplet atomization through aerobreakup is omnipresent in various natural and industrial processes. Atomization of Newtonian droplets is a well-studied area; however, non-Newtonian droplets have received less attention despite their being frequently encountered. By subjecting polymeric droplets of different concentrations to the induced airflow behind a moving shock wave, we explore the role of elasticity in modulating the aerobreakup of viscoelastic droplets. Three distinct modes of aerobreakup are identified for a wide range of Weber number $({\sim }10^2\unicode{x2013}10^4)$ and elasticity number $({\sim }10^{-4}\unicode{x2013}10^2)$ variation: these modes are vibrational, shear-induced entrainment and catastrophic breakup modes. Each mode is described as a three-stage process. Stage I is droplet deformation, stage II is the appearance and growth of hydrodynamic instabilities and stage III is the evolution of liquid mass morphology. It is observed that elasticity plays an insignificant role in the first two stages but a dominant role in the final stage. The results are described with the support of adequate mathematical analysis.
