Parasitological investigations were performed in July and September–October 1997 in six farms located in the department of Saône et Loire (eastern France) to determine the prevalence of natural infections with Paramphistomum daubneyi and Fasciola hepatica in four species of freshwater snails. Cercaria-containing rediae of P. daubneyi and/or F. hepatica were found in Lymnaea palustris (one snail only) and Lymnaea truncatula. Some living sporocysts and immature rediae were noted in Lymnaea ovata (P. daubneyi or F. hepatica) and in Physa acuta (P. daubneyi only). The prevalence of each trematode infection was often less than 10%. Experimental infections of juvenile and preadult snails (1 and 4 mm in height, respectively) were also performed to test the susceptibility of these four snail species to P. daubneyi, either singly or in combination with F. hepatica. Both 1 and 4 mm high L. truncatula could sustain the full development of P. daubneyi, whether in single or double infections. In L. palustris dually exposed to both trematodes, cercaria-containing rediae of P. daubneyi were found in one juvenile and one preadult snails, while immature infections were noted in ten juvenile and two preadult snails. The overall prevalence of P. daubneyi infection in L. palustris was 11.1% in juvenile snails and 2.1% in preadults. Larval forms of P. daubneyi and F. hepatica were only noted in dually-exposed juvenile L. ovata and P. acuta. In L. ovata, mature and immature rediae of F. hepatica were detected in 17.6% of snails, while immature rediae of P. daubneyi were noted in 4.4% of snails. In P. acuta, only immature infections were detected (5.1% of snails with P. daubneyi, and 1.2% with F. hepatica). These results demonstrated that Lymnaea species other than L. truncatula could sustain the full development of P. daubneyi and that immature larvae of this trematode might be found in naturally- or experimentally-infected L. ovata and P. acuta.

The phylum Acanthocephala is an important group of parasites with more than 1,300 species parasitizing intestine of all major vertebrate groups. However, our present knowledge of the mitochondrial genomes of Acanthocephala remains very limited. In the present study, we sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) bilaspurensis (Gyracanthocephala: Quadrigyridae) for the first time based on the specimens recovered from the intestine of common carp Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus (Cyprinidae) in Pakistan. The mitochondrial genome of A. bilaspurensis is 13,360 bp in size and contains 36 genes, representing the smallest mitogenome of acanthocephalans reported so far. The mitogenome of A. bilaspurensis also has the lowest level of overall A+T contents (59.3%) in the mitogenomes of Eoacanthocephala, and the non-coding region 3 (NCR3) lies between trnS2 and trnI, which is different from all of the other acanthocephalan species. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenating the amino acid sequences of 12 protein-coding genes using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods revealed that the family Pseudoacanthocephalidae is a sister to the Arhythmacanthidae rather than the Cavisomatidae, and the families Rhadinorhynchidae and Cavisomatidae showed sister relationships.

In this study, morphological and molecular features were used to identify a new Steinernema sp. from Chhattisgarh, India. Morphological and molecular features provide evidence for placing the new species into the “bicornutum” clade. The new species is characterized by the following morphological features: infective juveniles with a body length of 587 (494–671) μm; a distance from the anterior end to excretory pore of 46 (43–50) μm; a distance from anterior end to nerve ring of 72 μm (61–85 μm); and E% of 88 (77–97). The first-generation males are characterised by 27 genital papillae and very short spicules, with a length of 61 μm (53–67) μm. The SW% and GS% ratio of S. shori n. sp. are 139 (107–190) and 75 (62–90), respectively. The new species is further characterized by sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and partial 28S regions of the ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analyses show that S. shori n. sp. is most closely related to S. abbasi, S. kandii, and S. yirgalemense.

Mature specimens of Cucullanus heterochrous Rudolphi, 1802 (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) were obtained from the intestine of the flounder, Platichthys flesus, from Danish waters. Eggs embryonate in seawater but do not hatch. Fully developed larvae pressed out of eggs are 430 μm long with amphids and dereids and enclosed within the cuticle of a previous larval stage. Infective larvae are believed to be in their third stage. Experimental studies showed that the polychaetes, Nereis spp., Scoloplos armiger, Brada villosa and Capitella sp., may act as intermediate hosts. In N. diversicolor the larvae increase their length to 1 mm within four weeks (15°C) without moulting. Experimental infections showed that larvated eggs are not infective to fish, whereas >550 μm long larvae from polychaetes survived in 4–24 cm long flounders and plaice, Pleuronectes platessa. Third-stage larvae 550 μm to 1.1 mm long were found in the submucosa of the intestine one week post infection. At a length of about 800 μm to 1.4 mm they moult to fourth-stage larvae. Fourth-stage larvae, immature and mature worms occur in the intestine and rectum. Fourth-stage larvae and adults survived experimental transfer from one flounder to another. Similar developmental stages survived for two weeks in the intestine of experimentally infected cod, Gadus morhua.

The influence of climate on parasite distribution has been demonstrated in different regions worldwide. Despite its small size, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) constitutes a ‘biodiversity laboratory’ due to the huge climatic differences between municipalities. Feral cats may represent a threat to biodiversity due to their predatory behaviour. In addition, they may be a source of pathogens zoonotic to humans. To study the climatic/seasonal influence and prevalence of feral cat parasites throughout the island, a total of 290 stool samples from 29 feral cat colonies were analysed following standard concentration protocols (sodium chloride, formol-ether and zinc sulphate). In total, 13 feline parasitic taxa were found, with the most common species being Ancylostoma spp., which, together with Toxocara spp., Toxoplasma gondii and Giardia spp., are considered a concern for human health. Nematodes were the most common parasites in all areas. Nematodes and protozoans were significantly more prevalent in temperate mild (75.0% and 30.0%) than in dry desert areas (29.3% and 18.7%). In contrast, cestodes were significantly more prevalent in dry desert than in temperate mild areas (26.0% and 13.3%). Only protozoans exhibited statistically significant seasonal patterns, mostly in the wet season. Data reported in this study endorse the usage of small and diverse islands such as Gran Canaria to study the climatic influence on parasitic communities in wild/feral animals. Cat colonies require better management to reduce their threat to endemic wildlife, domestic animals and public health, being invasive species that harbour zoonotic parasites.

During the study of ectoparasites (Platyhelminthes) of fish in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River - Brazil, a new species of Urocleidoides, present in the gill filaments of Hemiodus orthonops (Hemiodontidae), is described using morphological description and molecular data from the mitochondrial region of cytochrome c oxidase, subunit 1 (COI) and the partial region of the 28S rDNA gene. Urocleidoides luquei n. sp. differs from all its congeners by the presence of a filament that joins the accessory piece to the base of the male copulatory organ and resembles U. paradoxus and U. surianoae. Phylogenetic analyses using molecular data revealed that U. luquei n. sp. forms a paraphyletic group concerning the other Urocleidoides species. In this way, as well as contributing to the description of a new species, we seek to encourage and contribute to the increase in research using integrative taxonomy, thus making it possible to elucidate some unresolved questions about the genus Urocleidoides.

Digeneans (Trematoda: Digenea) are endoparasites that present a complex life cycle, generally involving an intermediate invertebrate host and a vertebrate host. There is limited information about which species of molluscs may act as intermediate hosts in the upper Paraná River floodplain (UPRF), where Aylacostoma chloroticum can be considered a potential candidate. The study of digeneans in this region is important because some of these parasites are potentially zoonotic, and, therefore, are relevant to public health. However, the correct identification of these organisms during the larval stages is difficult because of the lack of morphologically diagnostic characteristics. The objective of this study was to identify and molecularly characterize the larval stages of digeneans found in A. chloroticum in the UPRF, using the mitochondrial marker of subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase and the 28S nuclear marker. The molluscs were examined in the laboratory and three morphotypes of cercariae were found. DNA was extracted from the specimens obtained and was then amplified and sequenced. The morphotypes exhibited high genetic similarities with Pseudosellacotyla, Paralecithodendrium and Philophthalmus, indicating that these organisms belong to these genera. This is the first record of larval stages of these genera in molluscs collected in the UPRF.

An analysis is made of the community structure of the helminth parasites of the tuna Euthynnus affinis collected off the coast of Visakhapatnam, Bay of Bengal. The helminth fauna comprised 23 species, consisting of two monogeneans, 18 digeneans, one larval cestode, one nematode and one acanthocephalan. Didymozoids, represented by 14 species, were the dominant members of the parasite spectrum. The parasite assemblage is characterized by species richness as well as a high diversity. Most of the parasites found, the didymozoids in particular, were host specialists, exhibiting a high degree of host specificity. The fauna comprised three core species, four satellite species and many secondary species, with no potential for interaction among them but the degree of predictability is high in that each infracommunity comprised two or three core species superimposed by a few secondary species. Many host factors such as the varied diet, high vagility, long life span and endothermy appear to have contributed to the development of the species rich and diverse parasite communities in the tuna. There was evidence for a decrease in parasite density and an increase in diversity with increase in host size, indicating that host size has a profound influence on the component community structure.

Edible viviparid snails are suspected to be the source of human echinostomiasis in Thailand, but little is known about the prevalence of viviparid snail parasitization by echinostomes in snails sold for human consumption in wet markets. Here, the prevalence of echinostome metacercariae and the association between parasitic intensity and host size, as well as the relationship to host species, were investigated. In total, 1100 viviparid snails belonging to four species (Cipangopaludina annandalei, Filopaludina martensi martensi, F. sumatrensis polygramma and F. doliaris) were obtained from wet markets in Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand. All snail species were found to be infected with echinostome metacercariae with total prevalence and mean intensity values of 16.5% and 16.4, respectively. The metacercariae of the avian trematode, Thapariella anastomusa were found in Filopaludina spp. snails. Interestingly, C. annandalei identified in this study had not previously been considered a food source and this is the first report of echinostome metacercaria in this snail species. Results confirmed the role of C. annandalei as the second intermediate host of the trematode; however, the species identity of these echinostomes remains unclear. Comparative morphology of these metacercariae and their adult stage require further study, and molecular markers are necessary to confirm their identification. Prevalence and intensity of echinostomes metacercariae was significantly associated with snail species.

Invasive species lose parasites in the process of invasion and tend to be less parasitized than conspecifics in the native range and sympatric native species in the invasive range (enemy release). We evaluated enemy release in an invasive freshwater fish in Ireland, common dace Leuciscus leuciscus, using helminth parasite community surveys at the core and front of the invasive range of common dace. Furthermore, we undertook a systematic literature review of helminth infection in common dace across its native range in Great Britain and Europe and invasive range in Ireland. The helminth parasite community survey revealed that invasive common dace were infected with fewer helminth species at the invasion front than at the core. Four helminth taxa – Acanthocephala, Monogenea, Digenea and Nematoda – were present in dace at the invasion core compared to only a single helminth species (Pomphorhynchus tereticollis) at the front. The systematic review revealed that invasive common dace in Ireland hosted fewer species of helminths than common dace in the native range. We report a total of three helminth species in common dace in Ireland compared to 24 in Great Britain and 84 in Continental Europe. Our results support the hypotheses that invasive populations are less parasitized than native populations and that more recently established populations host fewer parasites. However, we demonstrate that invasive species may continue to experience release from parasites long after initial invasion.

The genetic diversity within the genus Trichinella was studied using cleavage fragment length polymorphism (CFLP) analysis. The CFLP method generates specific fingerprints based on single nucleotide mutations. By this method the amplified intergenic regions of the 5S rRNA genes of the eight different genotypes of Trichinella were analysed. The CFLP pattern of T. spiralis was completely different compared with the sylvatic species T. britovi, T. nativa, T. nelsoni, and the genotypes Trichinella T5, Trichinella T6 and Trichinella T8. The T. pseudospiralis intergenic region can be differentiated by size from the other species of Trichinella.

One new species of the family Nordiidae Jairajpuri & Siddiqi, 1964 from the enclosure grassland of Qinghai Province, China, Heterodorus qinghaiensis n. sp., is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by the slender body, 1.29–1.46 mm in length; the granular lateral chord with numerous large depression plaques throughout its entirety; the lip region offset by a distinct depression; amphid goblet-shaped with aperture about half to two-thirds of corresponding body diameter; odontostyle 11–13 μm long; rod-like odontophore without basal flanges; pharyngeal basal expansion about one-third of the total neck length; didelphic genital system containing sperm; ovaries generally not reaching the sphincter level; vulva transversed and sclerotized; female tail conoid with round terminus; 3–5 spaced ventromedial supplements and spicule 32–41 μm long. It is close to H. liangi (Ahmad, Wu & Shaheen, 2002) Andrássy, 2009, H. brevidentatus (Thorne, 1939) Andrássy, 2009, H. monticola Andrássy, 2011, H. morgensis (Loof, 1988) Andrássy, 2009 and H. meghalayensis (Mushtaq, Baniyamuddin & Ahmad, 2007) Andrássy, 2009 in having inconspicuous or no lateral body pores, smaller odontostyle and ventrally curved tail.

Three age groups of Bulinus natalensis, immature, mature but not yet egg-laying and mature egg-laying, were infected with miracidia of Schistosoma margrebowiei. The growth of infected, exposed but showing no signs of infection, and uninfected control groups, were examined at weekly intervals for ten weeks post exposure. Snails exposed to infection when immature, even in the group where no patent development ensued, showed a statistically significant reduction in growth and this was evident as early as 2–5 weeks post exposure. When infection occurred at the stage prior to egg-laying a significant reduction in growth was seen but only in the group which developed a patent infection. This was also the case for the egg-laying group although the reduction in growth was only significant in the final three weeks of the experiment. Thus in all three age groups, growth rate was reduced and the infected snails were significantly smaller at the end of ten weeks compared with the controls. The reasons for these effects are discussed.

Toxoplasma gondii is a food-borne and orofecal microorganism which produces chronic infection, and attempts have been made to prove its negative association with atopy in the context of the hygiene hypothesis. Anisakis simplex is a fish parasite associated with chronic urticaria (CU) in endemic regions. We analysed the relationship between both infectious agents in CU. We included 42 patients with chronic urticaria (18 patients with CU associated with A. simplex sensitization and 24 not sensitized CU patients). Patients were assessed for atopy by a skin prick test (SPT) against common aeroallergens and for respiratory symptoms. Anisakis simplex sensitization was assessed by SPT and specific IgE by CAP fluoro-enzyme immunoassay (CAP-FEIA). Anti-T. gondii IgG levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). CU patients were analysed with respect to T. gondii seropositivity, A. simplex sensitization, atopy and immigrant status. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was 40.5% in CU patients and 42.1% in the control group. Immigrants were more frequently infected by T. gondii (41.2% versus 12%; P =0.036). Anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies were associated with past A. simplex parasitism (odds ratio 6.73; P =0.03) and independently with atopic sensitization (odds ratio 5.85; P =0.04). In CU patients, T. gondii has no protective effect on atopic sensitization or A. simplex sensitization.

Microfilariae of Onchocerca sweetae are broadly distributed in the superficial layers of the dermis of the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). A total of 2855 insects representing 20 species were collected from O. sweetae-infected bait buffaloes. Only one species, Culicoides sp. “M”, ingested microfilariae from buffalo skin. Larval development of O. sweetae was observed in the thorax of this species. A total of 829 insects, representing 7 species and including 749 parous Culicoides spp. were collected from light and Manitoba traps. Developing filarioid larvae were observed only in Culicoides sp. “M”. It is concluded that Culicoides sp. “M” is a natural intermediate host of O. sweetae in the Northern Territory of Australia.

The consequences of previous and concurrent infection with two related species of cestodes, Hymenolepis nana and H. diminuta, were studied in CD1 mice. A H. diminuta infection strongly affected the establishment and the survival of a secondary H. nana egg or cyst infection administered 30 days later. An infection of 20 H. nana eggs strongly protected against a 5-cyst H. diminuta challenge, whereas an infection of 10 H. nana cysts was ineffective; 20 H. nana eggs also protected against a challenge with 5 cysts of H. diminuta administered 5 days later. No effects were observed in either parasite during a concurrent infection established by administration of cysts. An H. nana egg-infection was unable to affect the establishment of a secondary H. nana cyst-infection given 1 month later; however a significant decrease in growth was found. Similar results were found when a primary H. nana egg-infection was followed 5 days later by the homologous cyst-infection. But an infection with 5 H. nana cysts was unable to protect against a homologous challenge of 5 cysts or 20 eggs. The reciprocal cross immunity between the heterologous parasites and the failure of protection of homologous challenges are discussed in relation to light infections.

Breinlia booliati exhibited nocturnal subperiodicity in its natural host, Rattus sabanus in contrast to experimentally infected laboratory-reared albino rats which showed irregular fluctuations of microfilariae throughout the 24 hour cycle. All the infected albino rats showed a prepatent period between 11–14 weeks postinoculation. Three patterns of microfilaraemia were discerned during the course of infection. 38/49 rats displayed a single peak, 4/49 displayed 2 peaks about 12–15 weeks apart and 7/49 showed a sustained high plateau-like pattern of microfilaraemia.

Cortisone had no effect on microfilarial levels when administered to rats near postpatcncy and some at postpatency.

The occurrence of specimens in a laboratory strain of Trichostrongylus vitrinus exhibiting unusual spicules resembling those of T. minor and T. angistris is reported and the abnormal spicules described. The specimens include individuals with one spicule typical of T. vitrinus and the other spicule of the abnormal type. Possible reasons for the occurrence of such abnormalities are discussed.

Acerylcholinesterase (EC 3:1:1:7) and alkaline phoshatase (EC 3:1:3:1) were detected in secretions of Moniezia expansa maintained in vitro. Ultrastructural cytochemical studies demonstrated acetylcholinesterase activity on the surface of the microtriches at the base of the interproglittidal glands and in the gland lumen but not in the distal tegument or the gland cells. Alkaline phoshatase activity was demonstrated in the cytoplasm of the gland cells and especially in their protoplasmic connections with the distal tegument. Activity was also found in the distal tegument and the microtriches. It is suggested that the acetylcholinesterase secreted by M. expansa performs a metabolic role at the worms's surface.

Thirty-four albino mice were each exposed to 20 cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum by the intraperitoneal or percutaneous route and killed after 60–127 days. The peritoneal cavity of each mouse was flushed and worms in the portal vein system were perfused with citrated saline. After sedimentation, washings were examined microscopically. Mature worms were only found in the portal vein system. The worm recovery rate was much higher by percutaneous infection (61.2%) than by intraperitoneal (37.1%). The encapsulated egg granulomas were observed either in the peritoneal cavity or on the intestinal wall; the mean number of encapsulated egg granulomas was also higher in the former (1.6) than in the latter (0.6). The average number of eggs per granuloma was very similar by both routes (10.7 and 11.4). The mean size of encapsulated egg granulomas (529 μm) was increased correspondingly with the number of eggs (range 181–985 μm). The percentage of viable eggs within the granulomas in the peritoneal cavity (77%) was much higher than those on the intestinal wall (18%). Encapsulated egg granulomas were usually ovoid although some had an irregular shape.
