The purpose of this paper is to extend the class of pairs A, H where H is a Hopf algebra over a field and A a right coideal subalgebra for which H is proved to be either projective or flat as an A-module. The projectivity is obtained under the assumption that H is residually finite dimensional, A has semilocal localizations with respect to a central subring, and there exists a Hopf subalgebra B of H such that the antipode of B is bijective and B is a finitely generated A-module. The flatness of H over A is shown to hold when H is a directed union of residually finite dimensional Hopf subalgebras, and there exists a Hopf subalgebra of H whose center contains A. More general projectivity and flatness results are established for (co)equivariant modules over an H-(co)module algebra under similar assumptions.

Given a group, it is a basic problem to determine which manifolds can occur as a fixed-point set of a smooth action of this group on a sphere. The current article answers this problem for a family of finite groups including perfect groups and nilpotent Oliver groups. We obtain the answer as an application of a new deleting and inserting theorem which is formulated to delete (or insert) fixed-point sets from (or to) disks with smooth actions of finite groups. One of the keys to the proof is an equivariant interpretation of the surgery theory of S. E. Cappell and J. L. Shaneson, for obtaining homology equivalences.

Let G denote a finite group and n = 2k 6 an even integer. Let X denote a simply connected, compact, oriented, smooth G-manifold of dimension n. Let L denote a union of connected, compact, neat submanifolds in X of dimension k. We invoke the hypothesis that L is a G-subcomplex of a G-equivariant smooth triangulation of X and contains the singular set of the action of G on X. If the dimension of the G-singular set is also k then the ordinary equivariant self-intersection form is not well defined, although the equivariant intersection form is well defined. The first goal of the paper is to eliminate the deficiency above by constructing a new, well defined, equivariant, self-intersection form, called the generalized (or doubly parametrized) equivariant self-intersection form. Its value at a given element agrees with that of the ordinary equivariant self-intersection form when the latter value is well defined. Let denote a finite family of immersions withtrivial normal bundle of k-dimensional, connected, closed, orientable, smooth manifolds into X. Assume that the integral (and mod 2) intersection forms applied to members of and to orientable (and nonorientable) k-dimensional members of L are trivial. Then the vanishing of the equivariant intersection form on × and the generalized equivariant self-intersection form on is a necessary and sufficient condition that is regularly homotopic to a family of disjoint embeddings, each of which is disjoint from L. This property, when is a finite family of immersions of the k-dimensional sphere Sk into X, is just what is needed for constructing an equivariant surgery theory for G-manifolds X as above whose G-singular set has dimension less than or equal to k. What is new for surgery theory is that the equivariant surgery obstruction is defined for an almost arbitrary singular set of dimension k and in particular, the k-dimensional components of the singular set can be nonorientable.

The theory of dendroidal sets has been developed to serve as a combinatorial model for homotopy coherent operads, see [MW07, CM13b]. An ∞-operad is a dendroidal set D satisfying certain lifting conditions.

In this paper we give a definition of K-groups Kn (D) for a dendroidal set D. These groups generalize the K-theory of symmetric monoidal (resp. permutative) categories and algebraic K-theory of rings. We establish some useful properties like invariance under the appropriate equivalences and long exact sequences which allow us to compute these groups in some examples. Using results from [Heu11b] and [BN12] we show that the K-theory groups of D can be realized as homotopy groups of a K-theory spectrum .

Let M be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective variety, defined over a finite field k, such that M admits a k-rational point x0. Let (M,x0/ denote the corresponding fundamental group-scheme introduced by Nori. Let EG be a principal G-bundle over M, where G is a reduced reductive linear algebraic group defined over the field k. Fix a polarization ξ on M. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent:

1. The principal G-bundle EG over M is given by a homomorphism (M,x0)→G.

2. There are integers b > a ≥ 1, such that the principal G-bundle (FbM)* EG is isomorphic to (FaM) * EG where FM is the absolute Frobenius morphism of M.

3. The principal G-bundle EG is strongly semistable, the degree(c2(ad(EG))c1 (ξ)d−2 = 0, where d = dimM, and the degree(c1(EG(χ))c1(ξ)d−1) = 0 for every character χ of G, where EG(χ) is the line bundle over M associated to EG for χ.

In [16], the equivalence between the first statement and the third statement was proved under the extra assumption that dimM = 1 and G is semisimple.

Let K be a field. We study a class of left C-comodules over a basic left Euler coalgebra C by means of the Euler ℤ-bilinear form associated to C, the Euler characteristic χC(M,N) of left C-comodules M,N, and the defect ∂C(M,N) ∊ ℤ associated to any computable Euler pair (M,N) of left C-comodules. We show that (lgthM, lgthN) = χC(M,N) + ∂C(M,N), for any computable Euler pair (M,N) of comodules over a left Euler coalgebra C. One of the main results of the paper asserts that the defect ∂C(M,N) is zero and (lgthM,lgthN) = χC(M,N), if the comodules M,N are finite-dimensional.

The paper introduces a group LSP of obstructions to splitting a homotopy equivalence along a pair of submanifolds. We develop exact sequences relating the LSP-groups with various surgery obstruction groups for a manifold triple and structure sets arising from a manifold triple. The natural map from the surgery obstruction group of the ambient manifold to the LSP-group provides an invariant when elements of the Wall group are not realized by normal maps of closed manifolds. Some LSP-groups are computed precisely.

We establish a presentation for K1 of any small exact category P, based on the notion of “mirror image sequence,” originally introduced by Grayson in 1979; as part of the proof, we show that every element of K1(P) arises from a mirror image sequence. This provides an alternative to Nenashev's presentation in terms of “double short exact sequences.”

In this work, we s uggest a defnition for the category of mixed motives generated by the motive h1 (E) for E an elliptic curve without complex multiplication. We then compute the cohomology of this category. Modulo a strengthening of the Beilinson-Soulé conjecture, we show that the cohomology of our category agrees with the expected motivic cohomology groups. Finally for each pure motive (Symnh1 (E)) (–1) we construct families of nontrivial motives whose highest associated weight graded piece is (Symnh1 (E)) (–1).

Let C be a pseudo-abelian symmetric monoidal category, and X a Schur-finite object of C. We study the problem of rationality of the motivic zeta function ζx(t) of X. Since the coefficient ring is not a field, there are several variants of rationality — uniform, global, determinantal and pointwise rationality. We show that ζx(t) is determinantally rational, and we give an example of C and X for which the motivic zeta function is not uniformly rational.

The main difficulty in the theory of non-abelian cohomology is that for cosimplicial groups only zero-th and first dimensional cohomotopy are known. In this article we introduce a new class of cosimplicial groups, called centralised cosimplicial groups, for which we are able to define a second cohomotopy, with all expected properties. The main examples of such cosimplicial groups come from 2-categories.

In this paper we begin studying tannakian constructions in ∞-categories and combine them with the theory of motivic categories developed by Hanamura, Levine, and Voevodsky. This paper is the first in a series of papers. For the purposes above, we first construct a derived affine group scheme and its representation category from a symmetric monoidal ∞-category, which we shall call the tannakization of a symmetric monoidal ∞-category. It can be viewed as an ∞-categorical generalization of work of Joyal-Street and Nori. Next we apply it to the stable ∞-category of mixed motives equipped with the realization functor of a mixed Weil cohomology. We construct a derived motivic Galois group which represents the automorphism group of the realization functor, and whose representation category satisfies an appropriate universal property. As a consequence, we construct an underived motivic Galois group of mixed motives, which is a pro-algebraic group and has nice properties. Also, we present basic properties of derived affine group schemes in the Appendix.

Let G be a locally compact group and ρ a non-unitary finite dimensional representation of G. We consider tensor products of ρ by some unitary representations of G in order to define two Banach algebras analogous to the group C*-algebras, C*(G) and C*r(G). We calculate the K-theory of such algebras for a large class of groups satisfying the Baum-Connes conjecture.

We generalize several comparison results between algebraic, semi-topological and topological K-theories to the equivariant case with respect to a finite group.

We survey the genesis and development of higher algebraic K-theory by Daniel Quillen.

The topic of this paper is the construction of a finite set of generators for a subgroup of finite index in the unit group u(ℤG) of the integral group ring of a finite group G. The present paper is a continuation of earlier research by Bass and Milnor, Jespers and Leal, and Ritter and Sehgal who constructed such generators provided that the group G does not have a non-abelian fixed-point free epimorphic image and the rational group algebra ℚG does not have simple epimorphic images that are two-by-two matrices over either the rationals, a quadratic imaginary extension of the rationals or a non-commutative division algebra. In this paper we allow simple images of the type M2(ℚ). We will do so by introducing new additional generators using Farey symbols, which are in one to one correspondence with fundamental polygons of congruence subgroups of PSL2(ℤ). Furthermore, for each simple Wedderburn component M2(ℚ) of ℚG, the new generators give a free subgroup that is embedded in M2(ℤ).

The following are personal reminiscences of my research years in algebraic K-theory and cyclic homology during which Dan Quillen was everyday present in my professional life.

In the late sixties (of the twentieth century) the groups K0;K1;K2 were known and well-studied. The group K0 had been introduced by Alexander Grothendieck, then came K1 by Hyman Bass [2] (as a variation of the Whitehead group), permitting one to generalize the notion of determinant, and finally K2 by John Milnor [9] and Michel Kervaire. The big problem was: how about Kn? Having in mind topological K-theory and all the other generalized (co)homological theories, one was expecting higher K-groups which satisfy similar axioms, in particular the Mayer-Vietoris exact sequence. The discovery by Richard Swan of the existence of an obstruction for this property to hold shed some embarrassment. What kind of properties should we ask of Kn? There were various attempts, for instance by Max Karoubi and Orlando Villamayor [4]. And suddenly Dan Quillen came with a candidate sharing a lot of nice properties. He had even two different constructions of the same object: the “+” construction and the “Q” construction [14, 15]. Not only did he propose a candidate but he already got a computation: the higher K-theory of finite fields. This was a fantastic step forward and Hyman Bass organized a two week conference at the Battelle Institute in Seattle during the summer of 1972, which was attended by Bass, Borel, Husemoller, Karoubi, Priddy, Quillen, Segal, Stasheff, Tate, Waldhausen, Wall and sixty other mathematicians. The Proceedings appeared as Springer Lecture Notes 341, 342 and 343. I met Quillen for the first time on this occasion.
