This study investigated the vibration fracture properties of Sn–Ag–Cu alloys with various Cu contents. Results show that the microstructure becomes finer with a higher Cu content. This leads to a lower damping capacity, higher deflection amplitude, and thus inferior vibration fracture resistance under a constant vibration force. It is of interest that when the Cu content reaches 1.5 wt%, the specimen possesses the highest damping capacity and greatest vibration life. The presence of massive primary Cu6Sn5 intermetallics probably accounts for this phenomenon.

Interfacial structures of c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7–y (Y123) and Nd1+xBa2–xCu3O7–y (Nd123) films were investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in conjunction with geometrical lattice matching and molecular orbital calculations. These films were formed on MgO(001) substrates by liquid-phase epitaxy. Despite the similarity in lattice constants between Y123 and Nd123, the in-plane orientation relationship (OR) to the substrates is different: [100]film//[100]substrate(I) for Y123 and [110]film//[100]substrate(II) for Nd123. From the results of HRTEM observations and image simulations, it was found that the Y123 and Nd123 films are terminated by BaO and CuO-chain layers at the interfaces, respectively. For both the Y123/MgO and Nd123/MgO systems, the OR(I) is assessed to be the most favorable in point of geometrical matching and the OR(II) is the second among the rotational misorientations on the [001]film and [001]MgO. The molecular orbital calculations reveal that the interface with the OR(II) and the CuO-chain layer termination is preferable in terms of covalent bonding for both the systems. Consequently, we suggest that the preferential interfacial structures are delicately determined by a balance of the geometrical and chemical factors at the interfaces, resulting in making the lowest interfacial free energies.

The nanoscale behavior of high-temperature flow deformation for silicate-based oxide glass ultrathin films was characterized with focus on forming a nano-patterned glass surface. The oxide glass thin films were deposited at room temperature by pulsed laser deposition onto the ultrasmooth sapphire substrates with 0.2-nm-high atomic steps. It was found from atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements that the silicate ultrathin films (about 3 nm thick) started to deform at a temperature 50 °C lower than the glass transition point of the bulk glass. The glass thin films annealed at high temperatures exhibited the nano-stepped surface structure reflecting the sapphire substrate surface. By scanning the AFM tip on the as-deposited glass film in a contact mode and then thermal annealing the film, we could pattern the nano-stepped glass surface at a nanoscale.

The effects of mesoporous structure on grain growth were investigated in this study. The synthesis was accomplished using block copolymer as the organic template and tungsten chloride as the inorganic precursor. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms were used to characterize the microstructures obtained for different temperatures. TGA and XRD analyses demonstrate that copolymers were expelled at 150–250 °C, and mesoporous structure was stable up to 350 °C. The pore diameter and the surface area evaluated from the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda model and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method indicated that the average pore diameter is 4.11 nm and specific surface area is 191.5 m2/g for 250 °C calcination. Arrhenius equation used to calculate the activation energy for grain growth demonstrates that the activation energy for grain growth was about 38.1 kJ/mol before mesostructure collapse and 11.3 kJ/mol after collapse. These results show evidence of two different mechanisms governing the process of grain growth. The presence of the pore can be related to the obstacle for grain growth.

Under prolonged electron-beam exposure, perovskite-structured SrTiO3:Pr,Al,Ga (STO) phosphor can be easily reduced due to oxygen loss. In particular, it is well known that dissociative H2O molecules are well adsorbed on reduced STO surfaces. The hydroxyl species produced by such dissociative adsorption of H2O strongly decompose organic compounds chemisorbed on the surface from vacuum ambient used in display devices into carbon species due to the photocatalytic properties of STO. Consequently, it is very likely that this mechanism attributes to the larger amounts of carbon adsorption by electron-stimulated chemical reactions on the STO phosphor surface than other phosphors.

Erbium and silicon were dual implanted into thermally grown SiO2 film on Si (110) substrates, followed by thermal treatment at 700–1200 °C for 30 min. The microstructure was studied by transmission electron microscope and x-ray diffraction. When the implanted films were annealed at T > 900 °C, the silicon nanocrystals (nc-Si) enwrapped by amorphous silicon (a-Si) could be observed. The thermal quenching behavior at λ = 1.535 μm and its relation with the annealling temperature were also investigated. With increasing annealing temperature, the portion of a-Si and the thermal quenching both decreased. Efficient luminescence from Er ions and weak intensity thermal quenching were obtained from the sample annealed at 1100 °C. The role of a-Si in non-radiative processes at T > 100 K is discussed.

A high-pressure silicon infiltration technique was applied to sinter diamond–SiC composites with different diamond crystal sizes. Composite samples were sintered at pressure 8 GPa and temperature 2170 K. The structure of composites was studied by evaluating x-ray diffraction peak profiles using Fourier coefficients of ab initio theoretical size and strain profiles. The composite samples have pronounced nanocrystalline structure: the volume-weighted mean crystallite size is 41–106 nm for the diamond phase and 17–37 nm for the SiC phase. The decrease of diamond crystal size leads to increased dislocation density in the diamond phase, lowers average crystallite sizes in both phases, decreases composite hardness, and improves fracture toughness.

An acetate-based polymeric precursor for producing yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was developed. The precursor was prepared under ambient conditions and contains only yttrium and zirconium cations. Dense, crack-free films were fabricated with this precursor on alumina substrates at a rate of 60 nm per deposition, producing polycrystalline YSZ at temperatures as low as 600 °C. Grain growth in thin YSZ films followed Arrhenius equation with an activation energy approximately 0.45 eV. The residual strain in YSZ films decreased with increasing annealing temperature from 600 to 900 °C.

Europium-doped lutetium oxide (Lu2O3:Eu3+) nanophosphors were synthesized via modified combustion technique using urea as the fuel and metal nitrates as oxidants. The pellets prepared from the calcined nanocrystalline powders were vacuum sintered up to 1750 °C leading to very translucent ceramic. The products were characterized by x-ray diffraction to ascertain phase purity. The microstructures reveal the nanocrystalline nature of the powders. We have illustrated the crystallite size dependence and the influence of Eu3+ activation of Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanophosphors on Raman scattering. We have also demonstrated the particle size dependence of emission characteristics of nanophosphors and ceramics. Our results suggest that although the processed ceramics display superior emission characteristics, the nanocrystalline phosphor powders calcined at 1100 °C also display reasonably good emission characteristics, illustrating the possibility of their applications in display technology.

In the Sn–9Zn–xAg (x ranges from 0.5 to 3.0%) solder system, the Ag–Zn intermetallics start crystallizing as β–AgZn at about 300 °C. Subsequently, the solder experiences two peritectic transformations upon solidification. This results in the multiphase structural feature. The complicated crystallization process can be briefly described as L(liquid) → L + AgZn → L + AgZn + Ag5Zn8 → AgZn + Ag5Zn8 + AgZn3.

Room-temperature epitaxy of AlN thin films on sapphire (0001) substrates was achieved by pulsed laser deposition using an epitaxial NiO ultrathin buffer layer (approximately 6 nm thick). Four-circle x-ray diffraction analysis indicates a double heteroepitaxial structure of AlN (0001)/NiO(111)/sapphire (0001) with the epitaxial relationship of AlN [10-10] ‖ NiO [11-2] ‖ sapphire [11-20]. The surface morphology of room-temperature grown AlN thin films was found to be atomically smooth and nanostepped, reflecting the surface of the ultrasmooth sapphire substrate with 0.2-nm-high steps.

We studied the effects of the sintering temperature and applied pressure on Nd–Fe–B bulk nanocomposite magnets produced by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Amorphous Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 melt-spun ribbons were successfully consolidated into bulk form by the SPS method. When sintered at 873 K under applied pressures between 30 and 70 MPa, the bulk materials consisted of nanocomposite materials with a soft magnetic Fe3B phase and hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B phase. The density and magnetic properties of the bulk materials sintered at 873 K were strongly dependent on the applied pressure during sintering. Bulk Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 nanocomposite magnets sintered at 873 K under an applied pressure of 70 MPa showed a high remanence of 9.3 kG with a high coercivity of 2.5 kOe.

The hypothetical wurtzite structure chromium chalcogenides were investigated through first-principle calculation within density-functional theory. All compounds are predicted to be true half-metallic ferromagnets with an integer Bohr magneton of 4 μB per unit. Their half-metallic gaps are 1.147, 0.885, and 0.247 eV at their equilibrium volumes for wurtzite-type CrM (M = S, Se, and Te), respectively. The half-metallicity can be maintained even when volumes are expanded by more than 20% for all compounds and compressed by more than 20%, 20%, and 5%, for CrS, CrSe, and CrTe, respectively.

In this paper, we report the utilization of high ionic strength (>1100 mM) calcium phosphate solutions in depositing 20–65-μm-thick, bonelike apatitic calcium phosphate on Ti6Al4V within 2–6 h, at room temperature. The super-strength solution used here multiplied the concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions in human plasma or simulated body fluid (SBF) by a factor of ten. The interesting features of the technique are given in the following. First, the solutions did not contain any buffering agents, such as Tris or Hepes. Second, during the process, homogeneous formation of calcium phosphate nano-clusters took place. However, their presence did not adversely affect the coating process. Third, other than simple surface treatments to begin with, no other additional intermediate steps were necessary. The only step needed after the preparation of the solution from reagents is the addition of proper amounts of NaHCO3 to raise the pH to 6.5 prior to the coating procedure. Fourth, there is no CO2 bubbling required, and hence, this is a robust process. Fifth, such a procedure led to a significant enhancement of coating rate enabling the formation in as little as 2–6 h. Coating proceeded with a linear rate. Sixth, the adhesion strength (12 ± 2 MPa) of the present coatings was comparable to coatings produced by soaking in 1.5× SBF solutions over a prolonged period of time, typically two to three weeks. Finally, the carbonate content (8 wt%) and Ca/P molar ratio (1.57) qualify the coating as bonelike.

The wear properties under low loads of β Si3N4 and α sialon materials sintered with different rare-earth oxide sintering additives have been studied under dry sliding conditions using block-on-ring wear tests. All the worn surfaces showed an absence of fracture and smooth surfaces with the presence of an oxygen-rich filmlike debris indicating tribochemically induced oxidation of the surfaces. Extensive grain boundary removal was observed on the worn surfaces thought to be due to adhesion between this silicate phase and the tribochemically oxidized surfaces. The resistance to such oxidation and the properties of the residual grain boundary phase are thought to be important parameters affecting the wear behavior under the present testing conditions. For both the β Si3N4 and α sialon materials, there was an increase in wear resistance with decreasing cationic radius of the rare earth, thought to be due to improved oxidation resistance, and this was more remarkable in the case of the sialon materials where the incorporation of the sintering additives into the Si3N4 structure results in a lower amount of residual boundary phase.

Dense lossy AlN–SiC composites doped with Y2O3 were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Both the microstructure and the dielectric properties are different from those of hot-pressed samples. Microstructure analysis reveals little solid solution (AlN)x(SiC)1-x is formed. Scanning evanescent microwave microscopy images show that the materials by SPS exhibit large contrast in dielectric permittivity, whereas the hot-pressed materials show very mild fluctuation in dielectric permittivity over the samples. The results indicate that AlN–SiC composites fabricated by SPS can be treated approximately as a mechanical mixture of AlN and SiC when estimating complex permittivity of the composite in the microwave range. The complex permittivity of the composites with different SiC contents can be phenomenologically predicted by effective medium approximation.

Aging of precipitation hardened alloys results in particle coarsening, which in turn affects the strength. In this study, the effect of particle size distribution on the strength of precipitation-hardened alloys was considered. To better represent real alloys, the particle radii were distributed using the Wagner and Lifshitz and Slyozov (WLS) particle size distribution theory. The dislocation motion was simulated for a range of mean radii and the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) was calculated in each case. Results were also obtained by simulating the dislocation motion through the same system but with the glide plane populated by equal strength particles, which represent mean radii for each of the aging times. The CRSS value with the WLS particle distribution tends to decrease for lower radii than it does for the mean radius approach. The general trend of the simulation results compares well with the analytical values obtained using the equation for particle shearing and the Orowan equation.

An analytical model was developed in a previous work to relate the normalized indenter displacement to both the coating-to-substrate Young's modulus ratio and the coating-thickness-to-contact-radius ratio for Hertzian indentation on coating/substrate systems. However, application of this model is contingent upon the determination of the contact radius during indentation. Using the data from finite element analyses, an empirical equation is proposed in this paper to determine the normalized contact radius. Combining this empirical equation with the previous analytical equation, both the contact radius and the indenter displacement for Hertzian indentation on coating/substrate systems are predicted. The predictions obtained by this combined empirical–analytical method are shown to agree with the finite element results in general although the indenter displacement is over-estimated when the coating is stiffer than the substrate. Finally, the potential applications of this method to determine the elastic properties of coatings from the indentation data are envisaged.
