Consider a (real) projective plane which is topologically locally flatly embedded in S4. It is known that it always admits a 2-disk bundle neighborhood, whose boundary is homeomorphic to the quaternion space Q, the total space of the nonorientable S1-bundle over RP2 with Euler number ± 2, with fundamental group isomorphic to the quaternion group of order eight. Conversely let f: Q → S4 be an arbitrary locally flat topological embedding. Then we show that the closure of each connected component of S4 − f(Q) is always homeomorphic to the exterior of a topologically locally flatly embedded projective plane in S4. We also show that, for a large class of embedded projective planes in S4, a pair of exteriors of such embedded projective planes is always realized as the closures of the connected components of S4 − f(Q) for some locally flat topological embedding f: Q → S4.

If R is a 2-group of symplectic type with exponent 4, then R is isomorphic to the extraspecial group , or to the central product 4 o 21+2n of a cyclic group of order 4 and an extraspecial group, with central subgroups of order 2 amalgamated. This paper gives an explicit description of a projective representation of the group A of automorphisms of R centralizing Z(R), obtained from a faithful representation of R of degree 2n. The 2-cocycle associated with this projective representation takes values which are powers of −1 if R is isomorphic to and powers of otherwise. This explicit description of a projective representation is useful for computing character values or computing with central extensions of A. Such central extensions arise naturally in Aschbacher's classification of the subgroups of classical groups.

Taking residual finiteness as a starting point, we consider three related finiteness properties: weak subsemigroup separability, strong subsemigroup separability and complete separability. We investigate whether each of these properties is inherited by Schützenberger groups. The main result of this paper states that for a finitely generated commutative semigroup S, these three separability conditions coincide and are equivalent to every $\mathcal {H}$ -class of S being finite. We also provide examples to show that these properties in general differ for commutative semigroups and finitely generated semigroups. For a semigroup with finitely many $\mathcal {H}$ -classes, we investigate whether it has one of these properties if and only if all its Schützenberger groups have the property.

A tight Riesz group G is a partially ordered group G that satisfies a strengthened form of the Riesz interpolation property. The term “tight” was introduced by Miller in (1970) and the tight interpolation property has been considered by Fuchs (1965), Miller (1973), (to appear), (preprint), Loy and Miller (1972) and Wirth (1973). If G is free of elements called pseudozeros then G is a non-discrete Hausdorff topological group with respect to the open interval topology U. Moreover the closure P of the cone P of the given order is the cone of an associated order on G. This allows an interesting interplay between the associated order, the tight Riesz order and the topology U. Loy and Miller found of particular interest the case in which the associated partial order is a lattice order. This situation was considered in reverse by Reilly (1973) and Wirth (1973), who investigated the circumstances under which a lattice ordered group, and indeed a partially ordered group, permits the existence of a tight Riesz order for which the initial order is the associated order. These tight Riesz orders were then called compatible tight Riesz orders. In Section one we relate these ideas to the topologies denned on partially ordered groups by means of topological identities, as described by Banaschewski (1957), and show that the topologies obtained from topological identities are precisely the open interval topologies from compatible tight Riesz orders.

Using an elementary counting procedure on biquadratic polynomials over Zp it is shown that the probability distribution of odd, unramified rational primes according to decomposition type in a fixed dihedral numberfield is identical to the probility of separable quartic polynomials (mod p) whose roots generate numberfields with normal closure having Galois group isomorphic to D4, as p → ∞. This verifies a conjecture about a converse to the Tschebotarev density theorem. Further evidence in support of this conjecture is provided in quadratic and coubic numberfields.

This paper constructs a minimal faithful representation of a semilattice of groups by partial transformations. The solution is expressed in terms of join irreducible elements of the semilattice and minimal faithful representations of groups with respect to certain normal subgroups.

We discuss an alternative approach to Fréchet derivatives on Banach spaces inspired by a characterisation of derivatives due to Carathéodory. The approach allows many questions of differentiability to be reduced to questions of continuity. We demonstrate how that simplifies the theory of differentiation, including the rules of differentiation and the Schwarz lemma on the symmetry of second-order derivatives. We also provide a short proof of the differentiable dependence of fixed points in the Banach fixed point theorem.

The ordinary string class is an obstruction to lift the structure group LSpin(n) of a loop group bundle LQ → LM to the universal central extension of LSpin(n) by the circle. The vanishing problem of the ordinary string class and generalized string classes are considered from the viewpoint of the ring structure of the cohomology H*(M; R).

The Plancherel formula for the horocycle space, and several generalizations, is derived within the framework of quasi-regular representations which have monomial spectrum. The proof uses only machinery from the Penney-Fujiwara distribution-theoretic technique; no special semisimple harmonic analysis is needed. The Plancherel formulas obtained include the spectral distributions and the intertwining operators that effect the direct integral decomposition of the quasi-regular representation.

We investigate the invariant subspace structure of subalgebras of groupoid C*-algebras that are determined by automorphism groups implemented by cocycles on the groupoids. The invariant subspace structure is intimately tied to the asymptotic behavior of the cocycle.

We show that the Kato conjecture is true for m-accretive operators with highly singular coefficients. For operators of the form A = *F, where formally corresponds to d/dx + zδ on L2 (R), we prove that Dom (A1/2) = Dom() = e-zHH1(R) where H is the Heavysied function. By adapting recent methods of Auscher and Tchamitchian, we characterize Dom (A) in terms of an unconditional wavelet basis for L2(R).

Uniform asymptotic formulae are obtained for solutions of the differential equation for large positive values of the parameter u. Here p is a positive integer, θ an arbitrary parameter and z a complex variable whose domain of variation may be unbounded. The function ƒ (u, θ, z) is a regular function of ζ having an asymptotic expansion of the form for large u.

The results obtained include and extend those of earlier writers which are applicable to this equation.

Let E be a topological linear space over the real number field. Throughout of this paper, we denote by G an open subset of E, by ∂G the boundary of G and by the closure of G. The totality of all circled open neighbourhoods of the zero element denoted by U.

We study natural families of $\bar {\partial } $-operators on the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles. Applying a families index theorem for hyperbolic cusp operators from our previous work, we find formulae for the Chern characters of the associated index bundles. The contributions from the cusps are explicitly expressed in terms of the Chern characters of natural vector bundles related to the parabolic structure. We show that our result implies formulae for the Chern classes of the associated determinant bundles consistent with a result of Takhtajan and Zograf.

We have defined a mini-injective module and given some structures of self mini-injective rings and certain relationships between such rings and QF-rings in [8] and [9].

In this short note we shall study the modules dual to mini-injective modules, which we call maxi-quasiprojective modules. We shall give a characterization and some structures, in terms of the above modules, of those rings whose every injective modules has the lifting property of direct decompositions modulo the Jacobian radical (see [5], [6] and [7]). Furthermore, we shall show that the above rings are closely related to QF-rings (see [8] and [9]).

This paper considers algebraic independence and hypertranscendence of functions satisfying Mahler-type functional equations $af(z^{r})=f(z)+R(z)$, where $a$ is a nonzero complex number, $r$ an integer greater than 1, and $R(z)$ a rational function. Well-known results from the scope of Mahler’s method then imply algebraic independence over the rationals of the values of these functions at algebraic points. As an application, algebraic independence results on reciprocal sums of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers are obtained.

An analogue in a solid of the well known Pascal's theorem (Baker, [1], p. 219) for a conic is established by Baker ([2], pp. 53–54, Ex. 15) after Chasles [6] and by Salmon ([2], p. 142). The same is discussed in detail by Court [8]. The purpose of this paper is to extend it to a projective space of n dimensions or briefly to an n-space Sn. To prove it, we introduce here once again the idea of a set of n+1 associated lines in Sn as indicated in an earlier work (Mandan, [12]) in analogy with a set of 5 associated lines in S4 (Baker, [4], p. 122), and make use of the method of induction.

Suppose A and B are continuous linear operators mapping a complex Banach space X into itself. For any polynomial pC, it is obvious that when A commutes with B, then p(A) commutes with B. To see that the reverse implication is false, let A be nilpotent of order n. Then An commutes with all B but A cannot do so. Sufficient conditions for the implication: p(A) commutes with B implies A commutes with B: were given by Embry [2] for the case p(λ) = λn and Finkelstein and Lebow [3] in the general case. The latter authors proved in fact that if f is a function holomorphic on σ(A) and if f is univalent with non-vanishing derivative on σ(A), then A can be expressed as a function of f(A).

We prove that a domain Ω in the exterior of a convex domain C in a four-dimensional simply connected Riemannian manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature satisfies the relative isoperimetric inequality 64π2 Vol(Ω)3 < Vol(∂Ω ~ ∂C)4. Equality holds if and only if Ω is an Euclidean half ball and ∂Ω ~ ∂C is a hemisphere.

A set with a relation is isomorphic to a group quotient under the condition described as weak homogeneity, and to the quotient of a group with relation preserved by right and left translations if the homogeneity is strengthened. A method of constructing these group quotients and, furthermore, all such very homogeneous spaces, is described and an illustrative example given.
