Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus including species seldom investigated in sub-Saharan Africa. We surveyed wild small mammal populations in the areas of Richard Toll and Lake Guiers, Senegal, with the objective to evaluate their potential role as intermediate hosts of larval taeniid stages (i.e. metacestodes). Based on genetic sequences of a segment of the mitochondrial DNA gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), we identified Hydatigera parva metacestodes in 19 out of 172 (11.0%) Hubert's multimammate mice (Mastomys huberti) and one out of six (16.7%) gerbils (Taterillus sp.) and Hydatigera taeniaeformis sensu stricto metacestodes in one out of 215 (0.5%) Nile rats (Arvicanthis niloticus). This study reports epidemiological and molecular information on H. parva and H. taeniaeformis in West African rodents, further supporting the phylogeographic hypothesis on the African origin of H. parva. Our findings may indicate significant trophic interactions contributing to the local transmission of Hydatigera spp. and other parasites with similar life-cycle mechanisms. We therefore propose that further field investigations of rodent population dynamics and rodent-borne infectious organisms are necessary to improve our understanding of host–parasite associations driving the transmission risks of rodent parasites in West Africa.

A description is given of a new species of Henneguya (Myxosporidia), named H. tegidiensis sp.nov. It is parasitic in the freshwater fish, Coregonus clupeoides pennantii, from Lake Bala (North Wales), producing in it intramuscular cysts.

Climate and weather conditions may have substantial effects on the ecology of both parasites and hosts in natural populations. The strength and shape of the effects of weather on parasites and hosts are likely to change as global warming affects local climate. These changes may in turn alter fundamental elements of parasite–host dynamics. We explored the influence of temperature and precipitation on parasite prevalence in a metapopulation of avian hosts in northern Norway. We also investigated if annual change in parasite prevalence was related to winter climate, as described by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We found that parasite prevalence increased with temperature within-years and decreased slightly with increasing precipitation. We also found that a mild winter (positive winter NAO index) was associated with higher mean parasite prevalence the following year. Our results indicate that both local and large scale weather conditions may affect the proportion of hosts that become infected by parasites in natural populations. Understanding the effect of climate and weather on parasite–host relationships in natural populations is vital in order to predict the full consequence of global warming.

It has been shown that the bovine abomasal parasite, Ostertagia ostertagi, drastically modulates its microenvironment, causing epithelial cell damage, accumulation of inflammatory cells and pH changes in the stomach. The mechanisms used by the parasite to change the abomasal environment are largely unknown, but an important role has been attributed to excretory-secretory (ES) products from the parasite. In this study we have identified proteins representing a novel ES protein family, characterized by the SCP/Tpx-1/Ag5/PR-1/Sc7 protein motif. These proteins were named Oo-AL1 and Oo-AL2 (O. ostertagi ASP-like protein). Both proteins contain a signal peptide and 1 predicted N-glycosylation site. The transcript for Oo-AL1 was present from the L4 stage onwards in both male and female adult worms, whereas the Oo-AL2 transcript was hardly detectable. Western blots of somatic extracts and ES products from different developmental stages of O. ostertagi, probed with anti-Oo-AL1 antibodies, revealed Oo-AL proteins in the ES products of adult worms. An analysis of the nematode genome and EST databases indicated that these novel ES proteins are unique to O. ostertagi and its relative, Teladorsagia circumcincta, suggesting a key function in these abomasal parasites.

Artyfechinostomum Lane, 1915 (type A. sufrartyfex Lane, 1915) is a synonym of Paryphostomum Dietz, 1909 (type P. radiatum Dujardin, 1845). While the general morphology of the two forms is similar and places them both in the family Echinostomatidae, other characters clearly place them in different genera of this family. In Artyfechinostomum the cirrus-sac extends far posterior to the acetabulum, and the right and left fields of vitellaria in the post-testicular region are confluent. In Paryphostomum the cirrus-sac is small and anterior to the middle of the acetabulum and the vitellaria in the post-testicular region are not confluent. These differences entitle Artyfechinostomum to be placed in a separate genus. The species Paryphostomum indicum Bhalerao, 1931 and P. mehrai Jain, 1957 are transferred to the genus Artyfechinostomum.

The aspidogastrid trematodes form a well-defined group of at most eight genera with a wide distribution. They are known from five continents and they occur in various cold-blooded hosts from both marine and fresh-water habitats, notably, Gasteropod and Lamellibranch molluscs, the larger Crustacea, some Fishes, and Chelonians. The recording of a new genus in a fresh locality is thus of some zoological importance.

This work contains the description of two new Coccidia parasitic in the South American lizard Cnemidophorus lemniscatus lemniscatus. One is identified as Eimeria flaviviridis americana subsp.nov., which is described and discussed in relation to the other species recorded from sauria. The other is Hoarella garnhami gen.nov., sp.nov., whose position in the family Eimeriidae necessitated a revision of the classification of the Coccidia Eimeriidae.

Protein kinases (PKs) of parasitic protozoa are being evaluated as drug targets. A large number of protein kinases within the protein kinome of Entamoeba histolytica strongly suggest that protein phosphorylation is a key component of pathogenesis regulation by this parasite. PI3 K and Src are kinases previously described in this parasite, but their role is poorly understood. Here, the effect of Src-1-inhibitor and PI3 K inhibitor (Wortmannin) on the virulence factors of E. histolytica was evaluated. Results show that both inhibitors affect the actin cytoskeleton and the amoebic movement. Also, the proteolytic activity is diminished by Wortmannin, but not by Src-inhibitor-1; however, the phagocytic capacity is diminished by Wortmannin and Src-1-inhibitor. Finally, we found that the virulence in vivo of E. histolytica is affected by Wortmannin but not by Src-1-inhibitor. This study opens the way for the design of anti-amoebic drugs based on kinase inhibition.

This paper demonstrates the use of a quantitative genetical technique to assess genetic variance in molluscicide resistance in a Millettia thonningii-Biomphalaria glabrata system. Results indicated that there were significant genetic variances in both snail size and survival time in 10 p.p.m. molluscicide suspension. The possibility of wider applications of this technique in examining the genetic basis of molluscicide or pesticide resistance in target species is discussed.

Four new actinospore types belonging to the sphaeractinomyxon collective group (Cnidaria, Myxosporea) are described from the coelomic cavity of a marine Baltidrilus sp. (Oligochaeta, Naididae) inhabiting a northern Portuguese estuary. Host identification supports the usage of marine oligochaetes, namely of the family Naididae Ehrenberg, 1828, as definitive hosts for myxosporeans inhabiting estuarine/marine environments. The absence of mixed infections in the host specimens analysed is suggested to reflect the influence of host-, parasite- and environmental-related factors regulating myxosporean–annelid interactions. Molecular analyses matched the SSU rDNA sequences of three of the four new types with those of mugiliform-infecting Myxobolus spp., namely Myxobolus mugiliensis and a Myxobolus sp. from flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus, and Myxobolus labrosus from thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus. These results directly link, for the first time, the sphaeractinomyxon collective group to a myxospore counterpart, further confirming their previously hypothesized specific involvement in the life cycle of myxobolids that infect mullets. Acknowledging this life cycle relationship, the functionality of the sphaeractinomyxon morphotype is suggested to have been decisive for the evolutionary hyperdiversification of the genus Myxobolus in mullets. Unlike other actinospore morphotypes, sphaeractinomyxon lack valvular processes, which implies a limited capability for buoyancy. Considering the benthic-feeding nature of mullets, this feature is most likely crucial in promoting successful transmission to the vertebrate host.

Observations have been made on the frequency distribution of strongyloid infective larvae in random samples of pasture herbage collected on four occasions from a quarter-acre field grazed by five sheep carrying mixed strongyloid infections. The distribution of numbers of infective larvae of the genera Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Cooperia in each of the samples has been examined. The variance of each series was found to be substantially larger than its mean and, hence, the distributions were all highly overdispersed statistically. Of a number of frequency distribution models, the ‘truncated lognormal’ was found to provide the best empirical fit to the sample distributions.

The implications of these findings for determining the significance of the difference between two random sample estimates of the abundance of infective larvae in pasture, have been discussed. It has been shown that, because of the limit imposed by technical considerations on the maximum size of herbage samples, and because the distribution of infective larvae in pasture departs markedly from a random one, only quite large differences between the means of two random sample estimates are likely to be significant. However, because the numbers of infective larvae of the different strongyloid genera are highly correlated within sample units, considerably smaller differences between the means for different genera, within the same sample, can be detected as significant.

From a consideration of the complexity of the biological components generating populations of infective larvae on pasture, it has been concluded that simple frequency distribution models can contribute little towards an improved understanding of the population dynamics of strongyloid infective larvae in pastures grazed by sheep.

Sphaeridiotrema pseudoglobulus is a digenean parasite believed to be involved in a yearly fall die-off of ducks in Québec, Canada. Hatching characteristics of eggs stored at 7°C for 0–28 weeks in the lab and following maintenance overwinter in a lake are described. The hatching success of eggs stored for 4–28 weeks remained constant (71–81 %) but slightly less than that observed in fresh eggs (90%). The hatching success of eggs kept overwinter under natural conditions did not differ from that of eggs stored an equivalent length of time in the lab at 7°C (74·7 and 75·8%, respectively). With the exception of fresh eggs (17·7 days), the mean hatch time of eggs steadily decreased with increased storage time (18·9 days following 4 weeks storage to 11·4 days at 28 weeks storage) due to a slow embryonation of the eggs at 7°C. Hatching characteristics of a subsample of eggs incubated at 10, 15 and 20°C were compared and the embryonation rate was found to increase with incubation temperature. The majority of eggs stored at 10°C embryonated but failed to hatch. When their incubation temperature was raised to 15°C, a further 46% hatched within the following week. The survivorship functions of miracidia hatching from eggs stored for 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks differed but the mean expected life-span of the miracidia did not decline with increasing storage time as expected. The results of these experiments are discussed in relation to the potential importance of overwintered eggs in the development of the infective pool of metacercariae.

1. An account is given of the intensity and incidence of infestation of the scorpaenid redfish, Sebastes marinus and S. mentella, by the parasitic copepods Peniculus clavatus, Sphyrion lumpi and Chondracanthopsis nodosus on three fishing grounds in the eastern North Atlantic, namely Iceland, Bear Island and the Barents Sea.

2. Peniculus clavatus was found to be a rare parasite on both species of redfish in the eastern North Atlantic. Adult female parasites were found during the months from September to February only; they were usually attached to the pelvic or dorsal fins of the host causing little damage.

3. Sphyrion lumpi was found to be a comparatively rare parasite on the deep-water Sebastes mentella throughout the eastern North Atlantic but it was found on S. marinus in the vicinity of Bear Island only. It seems justifiable to regard the Bear Island grounds as a centre of abundance of Sphyrion lumpi in the eastern North Atlantic. Adult female S. lumpi tended to infest medium-sized redfish more often than smaller or larger fish.

4. The infestation of Sebastes marinus and S. mentella by Chondracanthopsis nodosus has been examined in some detail and attention directed to the influence on infestation of the host species, geographical distribution, body length, age and sex of the host, and seasonal variations. The distribution of female C. nodosus within the gill chamber of the two species of redfish is described; it appears to be related to the need of the parasite to secure a protected and spatially limited habitat out of the mainstream of the ventilation current through the gill chamber.

5. The ecological relationships between Sebastes marinus and S. mentella and the three species of parasitic copepod are described together with the possibility of using these and other parasites as indicators of the host's mode of life. It is concluded that Chondracanthopsis nodosus and Sphyrion lumpi merit more detailed and extensive study as possible parasitological indicators of different stocks of redfish.

The following paper lists the species of cestodes, not hitherto described by the author, obtained from Burmese animals during the years 1923–5. Many of the specimens were collected by Miss I. K. Reynolds while working in the Zoological Department of University College: the writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to her for the use of data, material and slides. He also wishes to express his thanks to the Trustees of the Victoria Memorial Park for permission to collect helminths from animals dying in the gardens.

Adult Ostertagia circumcincta from freshly killed sheep were incubated at 39 °C in a medium containing inorganic salts, antibiotics and D-[U-14C] glucose. The worms appeared healthy even after incubation for as long as 72 h. All the radioactivity was recovered either within the worms or in the incubation vessel in the form of metabolic products or unmetabolized glucose. Incubations were carried out at low oxygen tension except for those in which CO2 was measured. These were either aerobic or anaerobic. In terms of both quantity and radioactivity the main metabolic products of glucose were CO2, propan-1-ol, acetate and propionate. Smaller amounts of ethanol, lactate and succinate were formed. The results are compared with those found for the similar nematode Haemonchus contortus.

Clinical trichostrongylosis, caused by T. tenuis in the caeca, previously known in epizootic form among gallinaceous birds in Great Britain, is here reported for the first time in this country, in native domestic geese in the District of Columbia and in imported pheasants in Michigan.

In cultures made from caecal contents of infected pheasants, eggs hatched in 36–38 hours; the infective larval stage might be reached as early as the sixth day (fourth day after hatching). Moisture being present, migrating larvae, retracted within the cuticular sheath, resisted an average temperature of about −3° C. (range +3° to −20° C.) for 4 months, proving infective for a bird host at the end of that period. The chicken, turkey and guinea-fowl were successfully infected with cultures derived from pheasants; attempts to infect the duck and pigeon with cultures from pheasants, and to infect the duck with cultures from geese, were unsuccessful. Development to adults in bird hosts took place in a minimum of 7 days after infection; the size of adults varied in different birds, being greater in the chicken than in the pheasant, and still greater in the turkey. In early stages of infection diarrhoea from the caeca, with passage of mucus and blood, occurred; later all discharge from the caeca ceased. The pathological picture was that of acute typhlitis, with the trichostrongyles lying in close contact with or penetrating the mucosa. Reinfection being prevented, symptoms were of fairly short duration, and the infestation tended to die out in about 2 months.

The cuticle of parasitic nematodes, the main contact site with the host, plays an important role in host-parasite interaction and thus also in immunological control. We compared different surface-iodinated life-stages of the filarial worm Dipetalonema viteae (microfilariae, infective 3rd-stage larvae (L3), adult males and females) with respect to changes in their surface composition. Autoradiographs of peptide maps show that all stages present an identical set of peptide spots reflecting common surface protein(s). Spots specific for larvae L3 show that the composition of the iodinated surface differs in microfilariae and adults i.e. it changes during development. Adults show a spot typical for males or females. Identical spots are found in L3. This suggests that a surface component is also sex specific.

Anthomyia pluvialis Linn. (1761) is a very common and beautiful fly, widely distributed in the old world, and easily recognisable by having characteristic black spots on the thorax and abdomen.

When examining the contents of the alimentary canal of caddis-fly larvae, I found that in addition to certain well-known gregarines, they generally harbour several other interesting protist parasites which have not hitherto been described. Chief among these are: (a) a tricho-mastix, (b) a spirochaete, and (c) a flagellate which appears to be related to Macrostoma caulleryi, Alexieff. The present paper deals with the trichomastix and the spirochaete: I hope to describe the other flagellate fully in a future communication.

The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether temporal variation in environmental factors such as rainfall or temperature influence long-term fluctuations in the prevalence and mean abundance of the nematode Mexiconema cichlasomae in the cichlid fish Cichlasoma uropthalmus and its crustacean intermediate host, Argulus yucatanus. The study was undertaken in a tropical coastal lagoon in the Yucatan Peninsula (south-eastern Mexico) over an 8-year period. Variations in temperature, rainfall and monthly infection levels for both hosts were analysed using time series and cross-correlations to detect possible recurrent patterns. Infections of M. cichlasomae in A. yucatanus showed annual peaks, while in C. urophthalmus peaks were bi-annual. The latter appear to be related to the accumulation of several generations of this nematode in C. urophthalmus. Rainfall and temperature appear to be key environmental factors in influencing temporal variation in the infection of M. cichlasomae over periods longer than a year together with the accumulation of larval stages throughout time.
