A recently developed Rigaku parallel-beam X-ray diffraction system equipped with a parabolic graded-multilayer mirror in the incident beam and a parallel-slits analyzer in the diffracted beam was used for precision high-temperature diffraction studies. The lattice parameters a and c of α-Al2O3 at room temperature and up to 1473 K were determined with precision in the range of 0.6–7.3×10−5. The thermal expansion coefficients for a and c agreed with literature values to better than 3%. The system was used successfully also to determine the Debye characteristic temperature of Si and to study structural phase transition of LaCoO3 from rhombohedral at room temperature to cubic at 1700 K.

The solid-state phase transformation from α- to β-copper phthalocyanine, using isothermal data obtained at T=250 °C and nonisothermal data obtained in the temperature range of 30 °C≤T≤330 °C with a constant heating rate of 1.67 °/min, was investigated by sequential and parametric full quantitative Rietveld analyses. Results obtained in this study show that the parametric Rietveld refinement technique is most suitable and applicable for kinetic studies of isothermal powder diffraction data. On the other hand, the sequential Rietveld refinement technique can give reliable results for the kinetic analysis of nonisothermal data. The main advantages of the parametric Rietveld refinement over the sequential Rietveld refinement are increased robustness against outliers, low weight fractions, and noisy data and an increase in computational speed.

Tooth enamel, the outermost layer of human teeth, is a complex, hierarchically structured biocomposite. The details of this structure are important in multiple human health contexts, from understanding the progression of dental caries (tooth decay) to understanding the process of amelogenesis and related developmental defects. Enamel is composed primarily of long, nanoscale crystallites of hydroxyapatite that are bundled by the thousands to form micron-scale rods. Studies with transmission electron microscopy show the relationships between small groups of crystallites and X-ray diffraction characterize averages over many rods, but the direct measurement of variations in local crystallographic structure across and between enamel rods has been missing. Here, we describe a synchrotron X-ray-based experimental approach and a novel analysis method developed to address this gap in knowledge. A ~500-nm-wide beam of monochromatic X-rays in conjunction with a sample section only 1 μm in thickness enables 2D diffraction patterns to be collected from small well-separated volumes within the enamel microstructure but still probes enough crystallites (~300 per pattern) to extract population-level statistics on crystallographic features like lattice parameter, crystallite size, and orientation distributions. Furthermore, the development of a quantitative metric to characterize relative order and disorder based on the azimuthal autocorrelation of diffracted intensity enables these crystallographic measurements to be correlated with their location within the enamel microstructure (e.g., between rod and interrod regions). These methods represent a step forward in the characterization of human enamel and will elucidate the variation of the crystallographic structure across and between enamel rods for the first time.

A model for the crystalline structure of Ba2YCu0.25W0.75O6 solid solution is given. The model proposed a perovskite ordered structure, with a cubic unit cell made from eight perovskite-like units and having a symmetry described by the space group Fm3m. The crystalline structure was refined by the Rietveld technique, giving RF=0.048 for 82 reflections. The solid solution was characterized by the following parameters: Z=4, Mr=613.2, a=8.43630(8) Å, V=600.42(1) Å3, Dx=6.78 g cm−3, μ=209.04 mm−1, and F(000)=1047. The model assumed that copper and tungsten atoms, which were ordered with Y atoms, had the same local environment. Therefore, it was only a first approximation to the crystalline structure.

Crystals of green to bluish green rosasite from Tsumeb, Namibia are monoclinic, space group P21/a, with refined unit-cell parameters a = 12.873 (3), b = 9.354 (3), c = 3.156 (2) A, β = 110.36 (3)°, V = 356.3 (5) A3 and a:b:c = 1.3762:1:0.3374, with Z = 4 and Dx = 4.15 g./cm.3. Crystals are twinned by 180° rotation about a*. A fully indexed powder pattern is presented. Electron-microprobe analyses, average (wt. %): Cu 32.9, Zn 23.7; this suggests an analytical formula of (Cu1·18 Zn0·82) (CO3) (OH)2. The rosasite is optically biaxial negative, α = 1.673 (1), β = 1.796 (3), γ = 1.811 (3), 2Vx = 33 (5)° (calc. 36.4°), with X = c, Y = a* and Z = b.

The formation of the solid solutions in the (La1−xGdx)OCl series was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) at room temperature in the 2θ region between 6.5 and 120°. The Rietveld profile refinement analyses of the XPD patterns were carried out with the background, unit cell, atomic position, isotropic temperature, and Gaussian profile form parameters refined freely. All (La1−xGdx)OCl samples possessed the tetragonal PbFCl-type structure with P4/nmm as the space group (Z=2). The unit cell parameters a and c evolve smoothly through the series and no clustering of the Gd3+ ions was observed according to Vegard's law. The solid solubility exists throughout the whole series. The valence bond model was used to estimate the relative stabilities of the different (La1−xGdx)OCl solid solutions. The global instability index (GII) which equals to the deviation between the formal valence and the sum of the calculated valence bonds of each atom in the asymmetric unit was used as a tool in the assessment. In the (La1−xGdx)OCl series, GII increases both from the end and the beginning of the series toward the middle indicating diminishing stability. No breakdown of the La–Gd solid solution could be verified experimentally although the GII value for the (La0.4Gd0.6)OCl composition exceeds the limit of 0.2 which should mean the collapse of the structure. However, the diffraction reflections were found somewhat broader in the middle of the series indicating possible local distortion or disorder.

To test the effectiveness of phase identification software, a two-stage search/match round robin using powder X-ray diffraction data was organized, through the internet and world wide web. The first stage provided powder patterns and a vague sample origin, the second stage provided the chemistry and sample history. While the statistics are not robust, it shows that routine phase identification without chemistry can be performed, providing effective modern third generation search/match software is used; the most up to date databases are available; and well trained, experienced scientists perform the analysis.

Various electro-optical systems have been reported which permit intensification of X-ray diffraction patterns and thus a decrease in exposure time for recording and display of the X-ray images. Prior to 1966, all such electro-optical systems incorporated a large format X-ray image intensifier of the same type as conventionally used for medical and industrial fluoroscopy. In the past four years, a number of different systems have been reported which are superior to those developed prior to 1966. These systems may be grouped into two main categories, the large format variety for Laue diffraction applications, and the small format variety for topographic applications.

The purpose of the present paper is to describe the particular characteristics of both the large format and small format systems and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages associated with each type. Based on actual performance characteristics it will be shown that:

A multiple stage image intensifier system coupled to an external fluorescent screen is the most sensitive and only truly instantaneous system; it can be used with very weak X-ray intensities, the resolution is currently limited by the external fluorescent screen to 42μ the system is extremely versatile in that it can be used both for large format recording of Laue patterns as well as for small format recording of X-ray topographe; the system has a very long lifetime since nothing is altered by X-radiation.

2. 2. An X-ray sensitive vidicon is the least sensitive; it must be used with extremely high intensity X-rays or long exposure times; the resolution is the highest at approximately 15μ and is limited by either bandwidth of the television system, the thickness of the X-ray sensitive target or the size of the electron beam at the target; due to the small size of the X-ray sensitive target the system can only be used for small format recording of X-ray topographs; the lifetime of the system is short since X-radiation causes degradation of the target.

Subsolidus phase equilibrium of Na2O–Sm2O3–B2O3 system has been investigated mainly by solid-state reaction and powder X-ray diffraction method. There are nine definite three-phase regions and three ternary compounds determined under present experimental conditions. A novel compound Na3SmB2O6 was found and confirmed in this system, along with its two homogeneous compounds Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Eu) synthesized for the first time. The indexing results showed that all three compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No.14) with the same structure type as both Na3NdB2O6 and Na3GdB2O6. The lattice parameters (a, b, and c) of new borates Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Sm, Eu) decrease linearly with a decreasing radius of RE ion, which obeys the Lanthanide-contraction rule. The existence of a trigonal BO3 group in the Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Sm) compounds was confirmed by analysis of their infrared absorption spectra. Thermal stabilities of the three new borates have been investigated.

The crystalline structure of the M2CuWO6 phases with M = Ba or Sr was obtained from X-ray powder diffraction at room temperature with CuKα radiation. The phases are isostructural with tetragonal unit cells, space group I4/m and Z = 2. The parameters for the Sr2CuWO6 phase are: Mr = 518.6, a = 5.42693(5) Å, c = 8.4087(1) Å, V = 247.65(1) Å3, Dx = 6.954 Mg/m3, μ = 77.75 mm−1, F(000) = 454, R = 0.0375 for 24 reflections; the parameters for the Ba2CuWO6 phase are: Mr = 618.1, a = 5.56392(8) Å, c = 8.6274(1) Å, V = 267.08(1) Å3, Dx = 7.683 Mg/m3, μ = 157.0 mm−1, F(000) = 526, R = 0.0506 for 27 reflections. Cell parameters were obtained from Rietveld refinement. The crystalline structure is based on the perovskite structure. It is laminar with ordered alternating WO6 deformed octahedra and CuO2 planar squares along the [110] direction, joined by corners and rotated perpendicular to the [001] direction. The samples are electrica insulators.

The crystal structure of Li2LaTa2O6N was determined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data (Cu Kα1) using the Rietveld method. The title compound is tetragonal with space group I4/mmm, Z=2, and unit-cell dimensions a=0.395 049(4) nm, c=1.850 97(3) nm, and V=0.288 869(6) nm3. The initial structural model was successfully derived by the direct methods and further refined by the Rietveld method, with the anisotropic atomic displacement parameters being assigned for all atoms. The final reliability indices were Rwp=5.73%, S=1.46, Rp=4.33%, RB=1.13%, and RF=0.53%. Li2LaTa2O6N has a layered perovskite structure similar to that of Li2LaTa2O7.

The unit cell dimensions of minerals in the smectite group, regular and random mixed-layer groups, and halloysite shown in the Mineral Powder Diffraction File (1986) have been refined by least-squares analysis in the hexagonal system with a primitive lattice with indices restricted to hk or 00l reflections. Trioctahedral minerals have larger a unit-cell dimensions than dioctahedral minerals.

Zr(MoO4)2 molybdate has been synthesized by solid state reaction. Single crystals were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. Corrected crystal data are: monoclinic, a = 11.4309 (3), b = 7.9376 (2), c = 7.4619 (2) Å and β = 122.323 (2)°, V = 572.13 (6) /cm3 (5), Dx = 4.770 g/cm3. Powder diffraction data are reported.

Tabular untwinned crystals of colorless transparent armstrongite from the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex, on the Quebec – Labrador boundary, Canada are monoclinic, space group choices I2/m, I2, Im (diffraction aspect I*/*), with refined unit-cell parameters a = 13.599 (9), b = 14.114(9), c = 7.833 (4) Å, β = 103.41 (5)°, V = 1462.4 (±3.0) Å3. a:b:c = 0.9635:1:0.5550, Z = 4 and D(x) = 2.696 g/cm3. A fully indexed X-ray powder pattern is presented. Averaged electron-microprobe analyses suggest a theoretical formula of CaZrSi6O15 · 3 H2O. The Strange Lake armstrongite is biaxial negative, α = 1.567 (1), β = 1.576 (1), γ = 1.577 (1), 2V (meas.) = 39 (1)°, 2V (calc.) = 37°, Z∥b, X Λc = +4°, with no absorption and weak dispersion r < v.

The X-ray diffraction powder patterns were prepared and the crystal structures were refined for the double-perovskite series of compounds, Sr2RSbO6 (R = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu). We found the structures of the entire Sr2RSbO6 series to be monoclinic with space group P21/n (no. 14), and Z = 2. From R = Lu to Pr, the lattice parameters “a” range from 5.7779(2) to 5.879 05(8) Å, “b” range from 5.7888(2) to 5.969 52(9) Å, “c” range from 8.1767(3) to 8.369 20(12) Å, “β” range from 90.112(2)° to 90.313(1)°, and “V” range from 273.483(4) to 293.714(7) Å3. These lattice parameters follow the well-established trend of “lanthanide contraction”. The R 3+ and Sb5+ ions are found to be fully ordered in the double-perovskite arrangement of alternating corner-sharing octahedra in a zigzag fashion. The SrO12, RO6, and SbO6 cages are all found to have distorted coordination environments. Powder diffraction patterns of these compounds have been prepared, submitted, and published in the Powder Diffraction File.

Weight fractions of four dominant phases (C3S, C2S, C4AF and C3A) present in the NIST Reference Portland clinkers 8486, 8487 and 8488 were estimated by a series of Rietveld refinements. Calculated powder patterns were derived from the structural data for monoclinic C3S and C2S, orthorhombic C4AF and cubic C3A. X-ray diffraction data were collected in two laboratories with two diffractometers, a reflection and a transmission one. There were no significant differences between the results of the refinements based on the data sets collected on the machines with different experimental arrangements. Estimated phase compositions were compared to the reference values found by optical microscopy (MPC). Median agreement between refined and reference values within ±5% (absolute) was found only for 8488 clinker; for 8486 and C3A-rich 8487 it was within ±10% (absolute). In the majority of the refinements numerical instabilities were detected, leading to large correlations between FWHM and temperature parameters of some phases. The results obtained for C4AF were probably influenced by the presence of possible solid solutions with the structures close to that of C4AF. Weight fractions of low abundant C3A were estimated with the largest relative errors reaching in several cases ∼100%.

The diffraction pattern of nanocrystalline Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 was analyzed by whole powder pattern modeling, a recently proposed method for the study of line broadening. The main result in this typical case of study—the crystalline domain size distribution—matches closely the corresponding information obtained by transmission electron microscopy. Further information on nature and content of lattice defects is also discussed.

A number of synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microprobes (XFMs) around the world offer synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction (μXRD) to enhance mineral phase identification in geological and other environmental samples. Synchrotron μXRD can significantly enhance micro X-ray fluorescence and micro X-ray absorption fine structure measurements by providing direct structural information on the identity of minerals, their crystallinity, and potential impurities in crystal structures. The information is useful to understand the sequestration of metals in mineral deposits, mineral processing residues, soils, or sediments. Synchrotron μXRD was employed to characterize a surficial calcrete uranium (U) ore sample and to illustrate its usefulness in conjunction with U LIII μXANES analysis. μXRD and U LIII μXANES revealed that the mineral carnotite [K2(UO2)2(V2O8)·nH2O, n = 0, 1, 2, or 3] was not the sole U bearing mineral phase present and that surface complexes and or an amorphous precipitate were present as well. Unit-cell analysis from the μXRD patterns revealed that the interlayer spacing of carnotite was not uniform and that significant unit-cell volume expansions occurred likely because of variable cations (K+, Rb+, and Sr2+) and variably hydrated interlayer cations being present in the interlayer. Oriented specimen, single crystal effects, and the fixed orientation of the sample relative to the incident beam and the charge-coupled device camera limit the number of visible reflections and complicate mineral phase identification. With careful analysis of multiple structural analysis tools available at XFMs, however, a strong link between X-ray amorphous and X-ray crystalline materials in geologic and environmental samples can be established.

The analysis of the distribution of pharmaceutical materials in tablet formulations, such as drugs and matrix elements, is critical to product performance and is used in such areas as quality control, impurity testing, and process monitoring. Recently imaging techniques, such as Raman, near-IR, and fluorescence imaging, have become popular for “visualization” of pharmaceutical formulations, allowing for spatial and chemical composition information to be obtained simultaneously. These methods have been primarily focused on molecular imaging, or spatial analysis of the molecular characteristics of the tablet formulation. However, elemental species are also an important part of pharmaceuticals. Micro X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) elemental imaging offers complementary information to molecular imaging techniques. In this study, MXRF was used for the elemental imaging of various commercial pharmaceutical drug and vitamin supplements. Specifically, elemental composition and heterogeneity were monitored for each different tablet.

The decomposition reactions of two zirconium hydroxide nitrates Zr(OH)2(NO3)2·(4+x)H2O and α-Zr(OH)2 (NO3)2·(1+x)H2O (0≤x≤1) have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis and high-temperature X-ray powder diffractometry (HTXRD), in nitrogen gas environment. The decomposition reaction sequences were clearly displayed by the HTXRD technique. They are different for the two precursors, except the formation of amorphous zirconia at low temperature (200 °C) and crystalline zirconia at about 390 °C. Three modifications of Zr(OH)2(NO3)2·H2O (α,β,γ) were identified. Their X-ray powder diffraction patterns were indexed by the successive dichotomy method. The unit cells are triclinic and present some parametric and volumetric similarities from each other and also with that of their precursor. Moreover, the thermal decomposition sequences of Zr(OH)2(NO3)2·(4+x)H2O and α-Zr(OH)2(NO3)2·(1+x)H2O include the formation of anhydrous oxide nitrate ZrO(NO3)2 and anhydrous hydroxide nitrate Zr(OH)2(NO3)2, respectively.
