The angles which satisfy the equation

x=cosx,

occur in the solution of certain problems in analytical geometry.

It is easy to show that one value of the angle is coscoscos…cos 1, when the cosine is taken successively to infinity.

Varieties of topological groups have been investigated in several papers ((2) and (10)-(13)). In this note we investigate the varieties generated by classical Lie groups. In particular we show results of which the following is indicative: The variety generated by the unitary group U(n) contains U(m) if and only if m ≦ n. En route we introduce the notion of a variety of topological Lie algebras which provides a convenient setting in which to answer our questions.

The centre of interest now shifts from St Andrews and Edinburgh to Glasgow. The troubles that afflicted Scotland during the 17th Century bore heavily on Glasgow University and more particularly on the position of Mathematics in the University; but in 1691 a distinct Professorship of Mathematics was founded, and from that date the old system of Regents disappeared from Glasgow so far as Mathematics was concerned. The first occupant of the Chair was George Sinclair, who is now chiefly remembered by the controversy in which James Gregory held up Sinclair's Treatise Ars nova et magna to ridicule. It is not fair however to take Gregory's pamphlet as a final estimate of Sinclair's contributions to science; Sinclair laid himself open to attack, but he rendered great service to the mining industry of Scotland and deserves the gratitude of posterity in spite of his many eccentricities. His contributions to mathematics however are of no importance, but during his tenure of the Chair the number of students grew rapidly and the new professorship made a good start.

Results of Arscott (1) and Jayne (3) on real matrices are generalized to obtain bounds for the real parts of the eigenvalues of certain complex tridiagonal matrices, and bounds for the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of other tridiagonal matrices are given. It is shown that analogous results hold for zeros of the permanent of certain characteristic matrices.

Let (S, Σ, μ) and (T, Θ, v) be two measure spaces of finite measure where we assume S, T are compact Hausdorff spaces and μ, v are regular Borel measures. We construct the product measure space (T x S, >, Φ σ) in the usual way. Let G = [gl, g2, …, gp] and H = [hl, h1, …, hm be finite dimensional subspaces of C(S) and C(T) respectivelywhere G and H are also Chebyshev with respect to the L1-norm. Note that a subspace Y of a normed linear space X is Chebyshev if each x ∈X possesses exactly one best approximation y ∈Y. For example, in C(S) with the L1-norm, the subspace of polynomials of degree at most n is a Chebyshev subspace. This is an old theorem of Jackson. Now set

The main theorem of this paper is a little involved (though the proof is straightforward using a well-known idea) but the immediate corollaries are interesting. For example, take a complex normed vector space A which is also a normed algebra with identity under each of two multiplications * and ∘. Then these multiplications coincide if and only if there exists α such that ‖a ∘ b ‖ ≦ α ‖ a * b ‖ for a, b in A. This is a condition for the two Arens multiplications on the second dual of a Banach algebra to be identical. By taking * to be the multiplication of a Banach algebra and ∘ to be its opposite, we obtain the condition for commutativity given in (3). Other applications are concerned with conditions under which a bilinear mapping between two algebras is a homomorphism, when an element lies in the centre of an algebra, and a one-dimensional subspace of an algebra is a right ideal. An example shows that the theorem is false for algebras over the real field, but Theorem 2 gives the parallel result in this case.

This paper is a sequel to [2]. By a semigroup of high rank we mean a semigroup such that for s1≠s2, 〈S\{s1,s2}〉⊂S (properly). Semigroups of high rank such that 〈S\{s}〉⊂S(royal semigroups) were classified in [2], where it was also shown that for a noble semigroup (i.e. a semigroup of high rank such that there exists a superfluous element z in S for which 〈S\{z}〉S) there exists eithere exactly one superfluous element or exactly two superfluous elements [2, Theorem 3.7].

In [3] Laffey has shown that if Z is a cyclic subgroup of a finite subgroup G, then either a nontrivial subgroup of Z is normal in the Fitting subgroup F(G) or there exists a g in G such that Zg∩Z = 1. In this note we offer a simple proof of the following generalisation of that result:

Theorem. Let G be a finite group and X and Y cyclic subgroups of G. Then there exists a g in G such that Xg∩Y⊴F(G).

The problems associated with finding solutions of Laplace's equation subject to mixed boundary conditions have attracted much attention and, as a consequence, a variety of analytical techniques have been developed for the solution of such problems. Sneddon (1) has given a comprehensive account of these techniques. The object of this note is to draw attention to some simple orthogonal polynomial solutions to the most basic mixed boundary-value problems in two and threedimensional potential theory. These solutions have the advantage that most quantities of physical interest are easily evaluated in terms of known functions. Two-dimensional problems are considered in §2 and axially-symmetric three-dimensional problems in §3.

Let be an arbitrary semigroup. A congruence γ on is a group congruence if /γ is a group. The set of group congruences on is non-empty since × is a group congruence. The lattice of congruences on a semigroup will be denoted by () and the set of group congruences on will be denoted by (). If () is a lattice then it is modular and γ ∨ ρ = γ ο ρ = ρ ο γ for all γ, ρ ε (). The main result is that γ ν ρ = γ ο ρ ο γ for any γ ε () and ρ ε () (whence every element of the set () is dually right modular in (). This result has appeared, for particular classes of semigroups, many times in the literature. Also γ ν ρ = γ ο ρ ο γ = ρ ο γ ο ρ for all γ, ρ ε () which is similar to the well known result for the join of congruences on a group. Furthermore, if γ ∩ ρ ε () then γ ν ρ = γ ο ρ = ρ ο γ.

In the present paper we classify del Pezzo surfaces with log terminal singularities admitting an action of a finite simple group.

We present methods for the computation of the Hochschild and cyclic continuous cohomology and homology of some locally convex topological algebras. Let $(A_{\alpha},T_{\alpha,\beta})_{(\varLambda,\le)}$ be a reduced projective system of complete Hausdorff locally convex algebras with jointly continuous multiplications, and let $A$ be the projective limit algebra $A=\lim_{\substack{\raisebox{-3pt}{\tiny$\leftarrow$}\\ \raisebox{2pt}{\tiny$\,\alpha$}}} A_\alpha$. We prove that, for the continuous cyclic cohomology $HC^*$ and continuous periodic cohomology $HP^*$ of $A$ and $A_\alpha$, $\alpha\in\varLambda$, for all $n\ge0$, $HC^n(A)=\lim_{\substack{\raisebox{-3pt}{\tiny$\rightarrow$}\\ \raisebox{2pt}{\tiny$\!\alpha\,$}}} HC^n(A_\alpha)$, the inductive limit of $HC^n(A_\alpha)$, and, for $k=0,1$, $HP^k(A)=\lim_{\substack{\raisebox{-3pt}{\tiny$\rightarrow$}\\ \raisebox{2pt}{\tiny$\!\alpha\,$}}} HP^k(A_\alpha)$. For a projective limit algebra $A=\lim_{\substack{\raisebox{-3pt}{\tiny$\leftarrow$}\\ \raisebox{2pt}{\tiny$\,m$}}}A_m$ of a countable reduced projective system $(A_m,T_{m,\ell})_{\mathbb{N}}$ of Fréchet algebras, we also establish relations between the cyclic-type continuous homology of $A$ and $A_m$, $m\in\mathbb{N}$. For example, we show the exactness of the following short sequence for all $n\ge0$:

We present a class of Fréchet algebras $A$ for which the continuous periodic cohomology $HP^k(A)$, $k=0,1$, is isomorphic to the continuous cyclic cohomology $HC^{2\ell+k}(A)$ starting from some integer $\ell$. We apply the above results to calculate the continuous cyclic-type homology and cohomology of some Fréchet locally $m$-convex algebras.

Symmetry groups of Lie algebras and superalgebras constructed from (∈, δ)-Freudenthal-Kantor triple systems have been studied. In particular, for a special (ε, ε)-Freudenthal–Kantor triple, it is the SL(2) group. Also, the relationship between two constructions of Lie algebras from structurable algebras has been investigated.

The three common definitions of local compactness require, respectively, each point to have a compact neighbourhood, a neighbourhood basis consisting of compact sets, or a closed compact neighbourhood. These definitions are equivalent in Hausdorff or in regular spaces but not in general (3, 7).

On a semigroup S the relation ℒ* is defined by the rule that (a, b) ∈ ℒ* if and only if the elements a, b of S are related by Green's relation ℒ in some oversemigroup of S. It is well known that for a monoid S, every principal right ideal is projective if and only if each ℒ*-class of S contains an idempotent. Following (6) we say that a semigroup with or without an identity in which each ℒ*-class contains an idempotent and the idempotents commute is right adequate. A right adequate semigroup S in which eS ∩ aS = eaS for any e2 = e, a ∈ S is called right type A. This class of semigroups is studied in (5).

A 2-complex K is called almost-acyclic if H2(K) = 0 and H1(K) is torsion-free. This class of complexes was introduced in a previous paper (2), and applied to a problem of J. H. C. Whitehead concerning aspherical 2-complexes. In this note, the methods developed in (2) are used to study the finitely-generated subgroups of the fundamental group of an almost-acyclic 2-complex.

B. Maddox [15] defined absolutely pure modules and derived some interesting properties of these modules. C. Megibben [17] continued the study of these modules and found more interesting properties. We introduce in this paper co-absolutely co-pure modules as dual to absolutely pure modules. We first prove that over a commutative classical ring these modules are precisely the flat modules. As a biproduct we get a projective characterization of flat modules over a commutative co-noetherian ring. Secondly, over a quasi-Frobenius ring R, co-absolutely co-pure right R-modules turn out to be projective modules. Finally we get a characterization of almost Dedekind domains in terms of co-absolutely co-pure modules.

The known methods of “summing” divergent series, e.g. the means of Cesàro, Riesz, Borel, Lindelöf, Mittag-Leffler are particular cases of the transformation of a sequence (formed from the partial sums) by a T-matrix. An equivalent method is that of the transformation of the series by a γ-matrix, the fundamental properties of which have been proved by Carmichael, Perron and Bosanquet.

This paper obtains criteria for a Fano variety X defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero with normal crossing singularities to be smoothable. In particular, we show that X is smoothable by a flat deformation X → Δ with smooth total space X if and only if where D is the singular locus of X.
