The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) was founded in the 1990s as an annual scientific educating event for students of the junior high school classes. Starting from 4 teams at the 1st event in 1996 the Olympiad includes more than 20 countries nowadays. The style of the problems of IAO is aimed at developing the imagination, creativity and independent thinking. They stimulate the students to recognize the problem independently, to choose a model, to make necessary suppositions, estimations, to conduct multiway calculations or logic operations. The Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad was founded as a “daughter” (“affiliated”) olympiad in system of the International Astronomy Olympiad in 2005.

The first asteroid to be discovered in space and subsequently observed to impact Earth, asteroid 2008 TC3, exploded at a high 37 km altitude and stopped ablating at 32 km. This would classify the fireball as of Ceplecha's PE-criterion IIIb/a, meaning “cometary” in nature. In this case, the structural weakness may have come from pores found in some of the recovered meteorites, called “Almahata Sitta” (= Station 6 in Arabic). The explosion turned most of the asteroid mass to dust and vapor, only a tiny fraction shattered into macroscopic meteorites, the heaviest of which was 283 gram. Other similarly frail asteroids may be related to main belt comets.

We present a sample of radio galaxies selected only on the basis of radio continuum emission and we confirm that these galaxies have lower molecular gas mass than other elliptical galaxies with different selection criteria.

Understanding the details of how the red sequence is built is a key question in galaxy evolution. What are the relative roles of gas-rich vs. dry mergers, major vs. minor mergers or galaxy mergers vs. gas accretion? In a recent paper (Wild et al. 2009), we compare hydrodynamic simulations with observations to show how gas-rich major mergers result in galaxies with strong post-starburst spectral features, a population of galaxies easily identified in the real Universe using optical spectra. Using spectra from the VVDS deep survey with <z> = 0.7, and a principal component analysis technique to provide indices with high enough SNR, we find that 40% of the mass flux onto the red-sequence could enter through a strong post-starburst phase, and thus through gas-rich major mergers. The deeper samples provided by next generation galaxy redshift surveys will allow us to observe the primary physical processes responsible for the shut-down in starformation and build-up of the red sequence.

In this presentation, I will outline some of the different ways that neutron stars can generate gravitational waves, discuss recent improvements in modeling the relevant scenarios in the context of improving detector sensitivity, and show how observations are beginning to put interesting “constraints” on our theoretical models.

The total stellar mass loss that a star suffers through post-main-sequence evolution is of vital importance to understand its subsequent evolution. The mass-loss rate along the first-ascent red-giant branch alone determines the upper red-giant-branch luminosity function and horizontal-branch morphology. The distribution of stars in these phases directly affects our interpretation of the integrated colors of distant galaxies, and is therefore of fundamental importance for galaxy formation and evolution studies in the higher-redshift Universe. Yet, these mass-loss rates, especially as a function of age and metallicity, are very poorly constrained in current models. I present new constraints on this field based on imaging and spectroscopic observations of the end products from this evolution, white dwarfs. By studying the mass distribution of these dead stars in nearby star clusters with a range of (known) ages and metallicities, we can directly constrain the mass-loss rates of stars across a range of environments. These observations directly impact several fields in astrophysics, including our knowledge of the enrichment of the interstellar medium, our ability to construct population synthesis models to interpret galaxy colors and the general interpretation of the sources and processes responsible for the observed ultraviolet upturn in elliptical galaxies.

Intergalactic metals are ubiquitous, but their sources remain unknown. A key constraint on these sources is the spatial distributions of metals. Yet, the clustering of metals is difficult to interpret along single lines-of-sight, because distance and velocity information are mixed in redshift space. To overcome this situation we are carrying out detailed comparisons between the line-of-sight and transverse distributions of metal line absorption systems observed in a large sample of QSO pairs and simulations including a wide range of IGM-enrichment scenarios. The degeneracy between distance and velocity is broken by the transverse information available in pairs of sightlines, and thus these comparisons are providing unique new constraints on when and where metals were ejected from galaxies.

Gravitational wave detection can be done by precision timing of millisecond pulsars, and (with less likelihood) by precision astrometry on distant objects whose light or radio waves pass through gravitational waves on their way to our observatories. Underlying both of these is the relatively simple theory of light propagation in spacetimes with gravitational waves, which is also the basis of interferometric gravitational wave detectors. I review this theory and apply it to the timing and astrometric methods of detection. While pulsar timing might even be the first way that we directly detect gravitational waves, light deflection by gravitational waves seems out of reach.

We have obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise Keck spectra to determine Be abundances in over 100 stars in the Galactic halo. The stellar metallicities range from [Fe/H] = −0.50 to −3.50. Using this large sample, we have examined the trends of Be with Fe and Be with O. We find a real dispersion in Be at a given [O/H] that indicates that Be may not be a good cosmochronometer. Our results indicate that the dominant production mechanism for Be changes as the Galaxy ages. In the early eras of the Galaxy, when massive stars become supernovae, Be is produced from the acceleration of energetic CNO atoms which bombard protons in the vicinity of supernovae. Later spallation reactions occur as high energy protons bombard CNO atoms in the interstellar gas. The change occurs near [Fe/H] = −2.2. We have found that Be is deficient in Li-deficient halo stars, which favors the blue straggler analog hypothesis.

Observations of the large-scale magnetic field show that the current extended solar cycle minimum is different from the three previous well-observed minima. The weaker polar fields increase the relative influence of middle and low-latitude flux patterns on the configuration of the corona and heliosphere. A much larger portion of the open flux originates in equatorial coronal holes. Even though the mean magnetic field of the Sun as a star is the weakest since measurements began, the sector structure of the interplanetary field, though smaller in magnitude, reached fairly high latitude until 2009. The emergence of active regions through the cycle and transport of flux from low to high latitudes also show quite different patterns, providing insight into the dynamo that drives the cycle. Long records of synoptic observations provide a rich source of information about solar activity that must be maintained.

I present results from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Key Project on “Lyman break galaxy analogs” (LBA). The LBA project was designed in order to search for nearby (z<0.3) UV-luminous starburst galaxies that could serve as a training set that can be compared with starbursts at higher redshift, in particular the population of UV-selected Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ≳ 3 (Heckman et al. 2005; Hoopes et al. 2007). This search proved highly successful and we have since shown that there exists a rare population of nearby galaxies that is most similar to LBGs in terms of stellar mass, metallicity, extinction, star formation rate, size, morphology and gas kinematics (Overzier et al. 2008, 2009ab; Basu–Zych et al. 2007, 2009).

The gravitational wave detectors that are operating now are looking for several kinds of gravitational wave signals at frequencies of tens of Hertz to kilohertz. One of these is mergers of roughly 10 M⊙ BH binaries. Sometime between now and about 8 years from now, it is likely that signals of this kind will be observed. The result will be strong tests of the dynamical predictions of general relativity in the high field regime. However, observations at frequencies below 1 Hz will have to wait until the launch of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), hopefully only a few years later. LISA will have 3 main objectives, all involving massive BHs. The first is observations of mergers of pairs of intermediate mass (100 to 105M⊙) and higher mass BHs at redshifts out to roughly z=10. This will provide new information on the initial formation and growth of BHs such as those found in most galaxies, and the relation between BH growth and the evolution of galactic structure. The second objective is observations of roughly 10 M⊙ BHs, neutron stars, and white dwarfs spiraling into much more massive BHs in galactic nuclei. Such events will provide detailed information on the populations of such compact objects in the regions around galactic centers. And the third objective is the use of the first two types of observations for testing general relativity even more strongly than ground based detectors will. As an example, an extreme mass ratio event such as a 10 M⊙ BH spiraling into a galactic center BH can give roughly 105 observable cycles during about the last year before merger, with a mean relative velocity of 1/3 to 1/2 the speed of light, and the frequencies of periapsis precession and Lense-Thirring precession will be high. The LISA Pathfinder mission to prepare for LISA is scheduled for launch in 2011.

We present a comprehensive survey of B abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds from HST/STIS observations along 56 Galactic sight lines. Our sample is the result of a complete search of archival STIS data for the B II λ1362 resonance line, with each detection confirmed by the presence of absorption from other dominant ions at the same velocity. The data probe a range of astrophysical environments including both high-density regions of massive star formation as well as low-density paths through the Galactic halo, allowing us to clearly define the trend of B depletion onto interstellar grains as a function of gas density. Many extended sight lines exhibit complex absorption profiles that trace both local gas and gas associated with either the Sagittarius-Carina or Perseus spiral arm. Our analysis indicates a higher B/O ratio in the inner Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm than in the vicinity of the Sun, which may suggest that B production in the current epoch is dominated by a secondary process. The average gas-phase B abundance in the warm diffuse ISM [log ϵ(B) = 2.38±0.10] is consistent with the abundances determined for a variety of Galactic disk stars, but is depleted by 60% relative to the solar system value. Our survey also reveals sight lines with enhanced B abundances that potentially trace recent production of 11B either by cosmic-ray or neutrino-induced spallation. Such sight lines will be key to discerning the relative importance of the two production routes for 11B synthesis.

Preferably located in the outer main belt, D-type asteroids experienced less heating and represent an important population for studies on the origin and evolution of the asteroid belt, as well as the relations between asteroidal and cometary bodies. Their surface mineralogy is currently related to a mixture of organics, anhydrous silicates, opaque material and ice. However, like other taxonomic classes, a large spectral diversity can be seen among D-type objects. We use the Visible spectra of 100 D-type objects available in the literature to search for minor absorptions in those objects. The presence of minor absorptions around 0.6 and 0.8 microns is reported for a large number of objects in the sample. The presence of such bands is not related to the heliocentric distance of the objects, since the absorptions can be seen in the whole main belt, up to the the Trojans region.

Globular star clusters generally have large cores, i.e., rc/rh (the ratio of core to half-light radii) exceeds 0.3 for more than 50% of the Galactic globular clusters. In the absence of a central heating source, dynamical models suggest that massive clusters will contract, typically on a timescale shorter than a Hubble time, and exhibit a compact core. To explain the disagreement between observations and theory, intermediate-mass mass black holes have been invoked to explain the core structure. Recent observations, however, have failed to definitively prove their existence in clusters. A new scenario, involving a natal kick given to white dwarfs may provide the required heating and help clusters avoid or delay core collapse.

Astronomy is not only a branch of science but also an important part of the culture and civilisations of peoples. Starting with archeoastronomy to the present day, it has always contributed to a better understanding of life, of humanity. After 400 years of modern astronomy, it still addresses major problems such as: Why there is something rather than nothing? Why is nature comprehensible to humans? How is cosmos related to humanity? Do multiverses exist? Is there life on other planets? Are we alone in the universe? Does the universe have a beginning? If so, what does it mean? How did the universe originate? All these questions are a challenge for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary investigations, for philosophers, physicists, cosmologists, mathematicians, theologians. The new insights gained by pursuing in depth these common investigations will shape the society we live in and have important consequences on the future we are creating.

Chemically peculiar (CP) stars exhibit, simultaneously, a wide variety of physical phenomena, including diffusion, convection, magnetism, and pulsation. Thus, progress in the understanding of these objects requires the input of researchers from a variety of research fields within stellar astrophysics. The General Assembly of the IAU, in Rio de Janeiro, provided an excellent opportunity to discuss challenging new results faced in CP star research and improve the exchange of information and cooperation with experts of neighbouring scientific fields.

We discuss possibility of observations of the warm-hot intergalactic medium using the hyperfine structure line of highly charged nitrogen ion 14N VII (rest wavelength λ = 5.652 mm). Observations of this line will allow to separate bulk and turbulent motions in the observed target and will broaden the information about the gas ionization state, chemical and isotopic composition.

Wavelength of this line is well-suited for ground-based observation of objects at z ≈ 0.15 − 0.6 when it is redshifted to the widely-used 6.5 − 9 mm spectral band, and, for example, for z ≥ 1.3, when the line can be observed in 1.3 cm band and at lower frequencies.

I summarize the main characteristics of cosmological galaxy formation models and discuss some of the main results obtained in the last years.

The total and spectral irradiance varies over short time scales, i.e. from days to months, and longer time scales from years to decades, centuries, and beyond. In this talk we review the current understanding of irradiance changes from days to decades. We present the current status of observations and discuss proposed reconstruction approaches to understand these variations. The main question that ultimately needs to be answered is what are the physical processes that could explain the enhanced heating of the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region, and corona, leading to a change in the solar radiative output at various wavelengths. As semi-empirical models allow us to reproduce the solar spectrum over a broad wavelength range, they offer a powerful tool to determine the energy necessary to heat certain layers and at the same time balance the radiative losses.
