In this note the differential expression M[y] ≡ − y” + qy, q∈Lp(ℝ+) for some p ≧ l, is considered on [0,∞) together with the boundary condition either y(0) = 0 or y'(0) = 0. Lower bounds are given for the spectrum of the self-adjoint operators T generated by M[·] and these boundary conditions. The bounds depend on the Lp-norm of the coefficient q and they improve results of Everitt and Eastham. The bounds are optimal.

In this paper it is supposed that the effects produced by electric forces are intermittent and consist in the addition of finite increments of momentum occurring after finite intervals of time, and not, as is usually assumed, of a continuous flow of momentum. On the latter view, a body in the time δt receives an increment of momentum Fδt if F is the force; on the view discussed in this paper, it is a chance whether or not the body receives any increment; this chance is equal to δt/T, where T is a time, called the time interval of the force: it depends on the strength of the field and is equal to the average time between two increments. If I is the value of each increment of momentum, the expectation of increase of momentum in time δt is Iδt/T. Over intervals which are long compared with the time T the increase is the same as that under a continuous force equal to I/T, and for effects which are spread over such intervals the results of the intermittent theory agree with those of the usual theory. It seems possible, however, that in effects occurring in atoms or rays of light the times involved may be small enough to be comparable with T; in these cases the classical theory will no longer hold and an entirely different treatment is required. The paper discusses some of the effects which may be expected under these conditions : these include the spontaneous dissociation of electronic systems, the production of Röntgen rays. It follows, too, from the theory that there would be no radiation of energy from an electron describing a circular orbit; the theory, too, has an important application to the propagation of light; it shows that light cannot be propagated as divergent waves where the electric force falls off as the waves recede from the source; it requires that light should be corpuscular in character, i.e. must consist of units whose energy does not change as they travel through space.

In this paper, we consider a ring of neurons with self-feedback and delays. As a result of our approach based on global bifurcation theorems of delay differential equations coupled with representation theory of Lie groups, the coexistence of its asynchronous periodic solutions (i.e. mirror-reflecting waves, standing waves and discrete waves), bifurcated simultaneously from the trivial solution at some critical values of the delay, will be established for delay not only near to but also far away from the critical values. Therefore, we can obtain wave solutions of large amplitudes. In addition, we consider the coincidence of these periodic solutions.

We consider Hill's equation on the interval [0, a] with periodic and semi-periodic boundary condition. We derive the asymptotic form of the eigenvalues without smoothness conditions on q.

The question of the linear stability of spatially periodic waves for the Boussinesq equation (in the cases p = 2, 3) and the Klein–Gordon–Zakharov system is considered. For a wide class of solutions, we completely and explicitly characterize their linear stability (instability) when the perturbations are taken with the same period T. In particular, our results allow us to completely recover the linear stability results, in the limit T → ∞, for the whole-line case.

We improve the known results on interpolation of strictly singular operators and strictly co-singular operators in several directions. Applications are given to embeddings between symmetric spaces.

We consider a mathematical model which describes the frictionless contact between a piezoelectric body and a foundation. The contact process is quasi-static and the foundation is assumed to be insulated. The novelty of the model consists in the fact that the material behaviour is described with an electro-elastic–visco-plastic constitutive law and the contact is modelled with a subdifferential boundary condition. We derive a variational formulation of the problem which is in the form of a system coupling two nonlinear integral equations with a history-dependent hemivariational inequality and a time-dependent linear equation. We prove the existence of a weak solution to the problem and, under additional assumptions, its uniqueness. The proof is based on a recent result on history-dependent hemivariational inequalities obtained by Migórski, Ochal and Sofonea in 2011.

This paper considers curves in Rn. It defines affine arc length and affine curvatures. The family of affine distance functions is generalized, along with the family of affine height functions. A new basis is constructed that makes the conditions for Ak singularity types easier to calculate, and applications are given to geometrical problems.

In this paper we establish a new class of integral inequalities which originate from the well-known Hardy's inequality. The analysis used in the proofs is quite elementary and is based on the idea used by Levinson to obtain generalisations of Hardy's inequality.

This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of radial solutions to an elliptic equation in ℝn. The equation is derived from the blow-up problem in the non-linear Schrödinger equation.

We deal with the general problem of scattering by open arcs in two-dimensional space. We show that this problem can be solved by means of certain second-kind integral equations of the form , where and are first-kind integral operators whose composition gives rise to a generalized Calderón formula of the form in a weighted, periodized Sobolev space. (Here is a continuous and continuously invertible operator and is a compact operator.) The formulation provides, for the first time, a second-kind integral equation for the open-arc scattering problem with Neumann boundary conditions. Numerical experiments show that, for both the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, our second-kind integral equations have spectra that are bounded away from zero and infinity as k → ∞; to the authors’ knowledge these are the first integral equations for these problems that possess this desirable property. This situation is in stark contrast with that arising from the related classical open-surface hypersingular and single-layer operators N and S, whose composition NS maps, for example, the function ϕ = 1 into a function that is not even square integrable. Our proofs rely on three main elements: algebraic manipulations enabled by the presence of integral weights; use of the classical result of continuity of the Cesàro operator; and explicit characterization of the point spectrum of , which, interestingly, can be decomposed into the union of a countable set and an open set, both of which are tightly clustered around . As shown in a separate contribution, the new approach can be used to construct simple, spectrally accurate numerical solvers and, when used in conjunction with Krylov-subspace iterative solvers such as the generalized minimal residual method, it gives rise to a dramatic reduction in the number of iterations compared with those required by other approaches.

The relaxation of certain time-evolution problems is investigated. As a conceptually simple example, we study elastically deformable bodies that undergo martensitic phase transformations. The movement of the phase boundaries is hindered by dry friction. The fundamental problem is that the phase distribution forms a highly oscillatory microstructure in space. Therefore, it is desirable to derive a coarse-grained system that describes the effective properties. We introduce a concept of relaxation of the evolution system and apply it to the case where only two phases occur and the elastic energy is quadratic. Finally, we present a candidate for the relaxation in the general case.

A very simple proof of the polynomial matrix spectral factorization theorem (on the unit circle as well as on the real line), which relies on elementary complex analysis and linear algebra, is presented.

We study the normality of families of meromorphic functions defined in terms of certain omitted functions. In particular, we prove the following results. Firstly, if is a family of meromorphic functions in a domain D ⊂ ℂ, and a(z), b(z) and c(z) are distinct meromorphic functions in D and if, for all f ∈ and all z ∈ D, f(z) ≠ a(z), f(z) ≠ b(z) and f(z) ≠ c(z), then is normal in D. Secondly, letting R(w) be a rational function of degree greater than or equal to 3 and be a family of functions meromorphic in a domain D ⊂ ℂ, if there exists a non-constant meromorphic function α(z) in D such that, for all f ∈ and z ∈ D, R(f(z)) ≠ α(z), then is normal in D.

The concept of a transition system is extended to a parametrised family of differential equations

where x ∊ ℝn and λ ∊ Λ = [0, l]m, an m-cube. Furthermore, algebraic formulae for comparing connection matrices at the various parameter values are obtained. Finally, several applications of these techniques are indicated.

Iffis a continuous even function which is decreasing on (0,∞) and such that±α are its only zeros and are simple, then in three-dimensional phase spacethe unstable manifold of the equilibrium u = −α and the stable manifold of u = α are both two dimensional. If λ<0 it is shown that there is a unique bounded orbit of the equation λu‴ + u′ = f(u), and that this is a heteroclinic orbit joining these two equilibria. Other results on the existence and uniqueness of heteroclinic orbits are also established when f is not even and when f is not monotone on (0, ∞).

Hilbert boundary value problems for a half-space are considered for analytic representations of Schwartz distributions: given data g ∈D'(ℛ) and a coefficient x we seek functions F(z) analytic for Jmz≠0 whose limits exist in D'(ℛ) and satisfy F+—XF– = g on an open subset U of the real line R. U is the complement of a finite set which contains the singular support and the zeros of X·X and its reciprocal satisfy certain growth conditions near the boundary points of U. Solutions F(z) are shown to exist, and their general form is determined by obtaining a suitable factorisation of x.
