This paper is concerned with the existence of maximizers for a certain non-convex energy functional, relative to a class of rearrangements of a given function. Physically, the solution represents a uniform shear flow containing a bounded vortex anomaly, in R2. The prescribed data are the rearrangement class of the vorticity field.

This paper establishes the main features of the spectral theory for the singular two-point boundary-value problem and which models the buckling of a rod whose cross-sectional area decays to zero at one end. The degree of tapering is related to the rate at which the coefficient A tends to zero as s approaches 0. We say that there is tapering of order p ≥ 0 when A ∈ C([0, 1]) with A(s) > 0 for s ∈ (0, 1] and there is a constant L ∈ (0, ∞) such that lims→0A(s)/sp = L. A rigorous spectral theory involves relating (1)−(3) to the spectrum of a linear operator in a function space and then investigating the spectrum of that operator. We do this in two different (but, as we show, equivalent) settings, each of which is natural from a certain point of view. The main conclusion is that the spectral properties of the problem for tapering of order p = 2 are very different from what occurs for p < 2. For p = 2, there is a non-trivial essential spectrum and possibly no eigenvalues, whereas for p < 2, the whole spectrum consists of a sequence of simple eigenvalues. Establishing the details of this spectral theory is an important step in the study of the corresponding nonlinear model. The first function space that we choose is the one best suited to the mechanical interpretation of the problem and the one that is used for treating the nonlinear problem. However, we relate this formulation in a precise way to the usual L2 setting that is most common when dealing with boundary-value problems.

We deal with the initial-value problem for parabolic equations with discontinuous nonlinearities and establish the existence of its weak solution. Next, we show that for a suitable class of initial data, the weak solution is locally or globally unique in time. Lastly, we prove that there exist at least two different weak solutions in general if initial data do not belong to this class.

An infinite system of reaction–diffusion equations that represents a particular case of the discrete coagulation–fragmentation model with diffusion is studied. The reaction part of the model describes the rate of clusters break-up into smaller particles. Diffusion constants are assumed to be different in each equation and concentration-dependent fragmentation coefficients are considered. Existence of solutions is studied under fairly general assumptions on fragmentation coefficients and initial data. Uniqueness in the class of mass-preserving solutions is proved. Convergence of solutions to spatially homogeneous equilibrium state is obtained.

This is a contribution to the general problem of determining the extent to which the geometry of a riemannian manifold is determined by properties of its geodesic spheres. In particular we show that total umbilicity of geodesic spheres determines riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature; quasi-umbilicity of geodesic spheres determines Kähler and nearly-Kähler manifolds of constant holomorphic sectional curvature; and the condition that geodesic spheres have only two different principal curvatures, one having multiplicity 3, determines manifolds locally isometric to the quaternionic projective spaces. The use of Jacobi vector fields leads to a unified treatment of these different cases.

Let −DpD be a differential operator on the compact interval [−b, b] whose leading coefficient is positive on (0, b] and negative on [−b, 0), with fixed, separated, self-adjoint boundary conditions at b and −b and an additional interface condition at 0. The self-adjoint extensions of the corresponding minimal differential operator are non-semibounded and are related to non-semibounded sesquilinear forms by a generalization of Kato's representation theorems. The theory of non-semibounded sesquilinear forms is applied to this concrete situation. In particular, the generalized Friedrichs extension is obtained as the operator associated with the unique regular closure of the minimal sesquilinear form. Moreover, among all closed forms associated with the self-adjoint extensions, the regular closed forms are identified. As a consequence, eigenfunction expansion theorems are obtained for the differential operators as well as for certain indefinite Kreĭn–Feller operators with a single concentrated mass.

The present paper deals with the following system:

where p and p* are positive numbers satisfying 1/p + 1/p* = 1, and ϕq(z) = |z|q−2z for q = p or q = p*. This system is referred to as a half-linear system. We herein establish conditions on time-varying coefficients e(t), f(t), g(t) and h(t) for the zero solution to be uniformly globally asymptotically stable. If (e(t), f(t)) ≡ (h(t), g(t)), then the half-linear system is integrable. We consider two cases: the integrable case (e(t), f(t)) ≡ (h(t), g(t)) and the non-integrable case (e(t), f(t)) ≢ (h(t), g(t)). Finally, some simple examples are presented to illustrate our results.

Let R ×N equipped with the warped Lorentzian metric f2dt2 ⊕(− h), where (N, h) is a Riemannian manifold, and f: N → ]0, ∞[ is a smooth function. Then R × N is called a standard static space-time, and in this paper we look for non-trivial periodic trajectories on R × N for N compact.

Dirichlet–Neumann operators arise in many applications in the sciences, and this has inspired a number of studies on their analytical properties. In this paper we further investigate the analyticity properties of Dirichlet–Neumann operators as functions of the boundary shape. In particular, we study the size of the disc of convergence of their Taylor-series representation. For this we use a complexification technique which requires a novel reformulation of the problem, coupled with methods for systems of elliptic partial differential equations. Numerical results to illustrate our theoretical conclusions are presented.

In this paper, an Lp version of the “div-curl lemma” is generalised in a very general framework. Another form of the Lp -theorem of compensated compactness is also exploited.

§ 1. In the practical calculation of the periods and nodes of the lakes we have hitherto examined it has been found that the use of the Seiche Functions gives the best results. Indeed, as will appear from details presently to be submitted to the Society by Mr E. M. Wedderburn and myself, the agreement between theory and observation, so far as we have gone, is beyond what might reasonably have been expected. Also the phenomena of concave lakes, i.e. such as have no shallows or points of minimum depth, are easily deducible from the formulæ given in an abstract (Proc. R.S.E., vol. xxv. p. 328, 6th Oct. 1904) which I communicated to the Society on 18th July 1904. On the other hand, the theory of convex lakes is less easy of manipulation, chiefly owing to the difficulty in calculating the roots of the equations

For a symmetric linear relation S with a directing mapping, the notion of a spectral function is defined by means of a Bessel–Parseval inequality, and a description of all such spectral functions is given. As an application, we describe the set of all spectral functions of a canonical regular first order differential system.

We consider interpolation by piecewise polynomials, where the interpolation conditions are on certain derivatives of the function at certain points, specified by a finite incidence matrix E. Similarly the allowable discontinuities of the piecewise polynomials are specified by a finite incidence matrix F. We first find necessary conditions on (E, F) for the problem to be poised, that is to have a unique solution for any given data. The main result gives sufficient conditions on (E, F) for the problem to be poised, generalising a well-known result of Atkinson and Sharma. To this end we prove some results involving estimates of the numbers of zeros of the relevant piecewise polynomials.

It is shown that a cantilevered beam with weak viscoelastic damping of Boltzmann-type can be uniformly stabilised by velocity feedback applied as a shearing force at the free end of the beam. Estimates for the viscoelastic energy are derived using the energy multiplier method. The energy decay is related to the decay of the relaxation modulus associated with the viscoelastic material.

In this paper, a counterexample is given to the H1-boundedness of solutions to a sequence of systems of linear partial differential equations uniformly satisfying a strict Legendre–Hadamard condition and whose coefficients depend on one direction only. This counterexample is relevant for the theory of homogenisation of laminated elastic materials.

In this note semi-bounded self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators are investigated with the help of the abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and their Weyl functions. The main purpose is to provide new sufficient conditions on the parameters in the boundary space to induce self-adjoint realizations, and to relate the decay of the Weyl function to estimates on the lower bound of the spectrum. The abstract results are illustrated with uniformly elliptic second-order partial differential equations on domains with non-compact boundaries.

The existence of bright and dark multi-bump solitary waves for Ginzburg–Landau type perturbations of the cubic-quintic Schrodinger equation is considered. The waves in question are not perturbations of known analytic solitary waves, but instead arise as a bifurcation from a heteroclinic cycle in a three-dimensional ODE phase space. Using geometric singular perturbation techniques, regions in parameter space for which 1-bump bright and dark solitary waves will bifurcate are identified. The existence of N-bump dark solitary waves (N ≧ 1) is shown via an application of the Exchange Lemma with Exponentially Small Error. N-bump bright solitary waves are shown to exist as a consequence of the work of Kapitula and Maier-Paape.

Let Sturm–Liouville problems

with continuous coefficients and appropriate boundary conditions, be coupled by the eigenvalue λ = (λ1, … λk). When k = 1, there are various oscillation, perturbation and comparison theorems concerning existence and continuous or monotonic dependence of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and their zeros (i.e. focal points).

We attempt a unified theory for such results, valid for general fc, under conditions known as "left" and “right” definiteness. A representative result may be stated loosely as follows: if LD holds then (elementwise) monotonic dependence of p, q and the matrix [ars] forces monotonic dependence of λ. LD is a generalisation of the “polar” case for k = 1, and was originally conceived for a quite different purpose, viz. completeness of eigenfunctions via elliptic partial differential equation theory.

During the spring of 1916, while making observations from an economic point of view on the Holly Tortrix Moth, Eudemis nœvana (Hb.), I found that, owing to the transparency of the egg and its flattened form, the development could be followed in the living egg in a general way with unusual clearness.

Investigations have been carried out on the embryology of about eighteen species of Lepidoptera, but as far as I am aware no account has been published of the embryology of the Tortricidæ.
