1. At the present moment there is much discussion regarding the means by which properties are hereditarily transmitted from a parent organism to its offspring, and of the extent to which the Mendelian theory is capable of accounting for the facts. In this note it is not proposed to discuss the general question but to investigate the conditions under which the theory of correlation may be applied to Mendelian groupings. Two important papers on this subject have already been published: one by Professor Pearson, entitled “A Generalized Theory of Mendelian Inheritance”; the other, which is largely a criticism of this, by Professor Udny Yule. In Professor Pearson's paper the results produced when two organisms with any number of pairs of different zygotes mate indiscriminately are fully considered. He finds that such a population once established is stable, and he then deduces the parental and fraternal correlation coefficients.

If Ω is an unbounded domain in ℝN and p > N, the Sobolev space W1,p(Ω) is not compactly embedded into L∈(Ω). Nevertheless, we prove that if Ω is a strip-like domain, then the subspace of W1,p(Ω) consisting of the cylindrically symmetric functions is compactly embedded into L∈(Ω). As an application, we study a Neumann problem involving the p-Laplacian operator and an oscillating nonlinearity, proving the existence of infinitely many weak solutions. Analogous results are obtained for the case of partial symmetry.

We investigate the large-time behaviour of the solutions u = u(x, t) to the one-dimensional nonlinear heat equation with reaction

with exponents m > 1,p < 1. The initial function u(x, 0) is assumed to be measurable and nonnegative. In the case m + p ≧ 2 where the initial value does not uniquely determine the solution, we also fix the positivity set of the solution u(x, t) if the support of u(x, 0) is not the whole line ℝ, i.e. u(x, t) > 0 if and only if −s1(t) <x<s2(t), t ≧ 0, where 0≦si(t)≦∞ for t ≧ 0, i = 1, 2 are lower semicontinuous given functions. We prove that u converges to a self-similar function which depends only on the behaviour of u(x, 0) for |x| large or si(t) for t large. We classify the set of self-similar solutions and study the equation satisfied by their interfaces.

The problem in question is—To find the number of possible arrangements of a set of n things, subject to the conditions that the first is not to be in the last or first place, the second not in the first or second place, the third not in the second or third place, and so on.

We study the balanced Allen–Cahn problem in a singular perturbation setting. We are interested in the behaviour of clusters of layers, i.e. a family of solutions uε(x) with an increasing number of layers as ε → 0. In particular, we give a characterization of cluster of layers with asymptotically positive length by means of a limit energy function and, conversely, for a given admissible pattern, i.e. for a given a limit energy function, we construct a family of solutions with the corresponding behaviour.

We compare two cohomological Hall algebras (CoHA). The first one is the preprojective CoHA introduced in [19] associated with each quiver Q, and each algebraic oriented cohomology theory A. It is defined as the A-homology of the moduli of representations of the preprojective algebra of Q, generalizing the K-theoretic Hall algebra of commuting varieties of Schiffmann-Vasserot [15]. The other one is the critical CoHA defined by Kontsevich-Soibelman associated with each quiver with potentials. It is defined using the equivariant cohomology with compact support with coefficients in the sheaf of vanishing cycles. In the present paper, we show that the critical CoHA, for the quiver with potential of Ginzburg, is isomorphic to the preprojective CoHA as algebras. As applications, we obtain an algebra homomorphism from the positive part of the Yangian to the critical CoHA.

Bifurcation of periodic and chaotic solutions is investigated for coupled perturbed autonomous ordinary differential equations (ODEs) when the first unperturbed ODE has a homoclinic solution and the second unperturbed ODE possesses a Hopf singularity.

We prove C∞ regularity for moving interfaces of local solutions of the porous medium equation as well as C∞ lateral regularity for the pressure function near such an interface.

Let A be a product of symmetric matrices, A = RQ, with R non-singular, and let v be an eigenvector of A. For certain R and Q, a convenient formula for the expression (R−1v)tv is obtained. This expression occurs in the diagonalization of A and, in the particular case where A is associated with the quasi-derivative formulation of higher-order differential equations, the expression occurs in the asymptotic theory of solutions of the differential equation.

The asymptotic behaviour of solutions of second-order quasilinear elliptic partial differential equations defined on unbounded domains in Rn contained in strips (when n = 2) or slabs (when n > 2) is investigated when such solutions satisfy Dirichlet boundary conditions and the Dirichlet boundary data have appropriate asymptotic behaviour at infinity. We prove Phragmèn–Lindelöf theorems for large classes of elliptic operators, including uniformly elliptic operators and operators with well-defined genre, establish exponential decay estimates for uniformly elliptic operators when the Dirichlet boundary data vanish outside a compact set, establish the uniqueness of solutions, and give examples of solutions for non-uniformly elliptic operators which decay but do not decay exponentially. Our principal theorems are proven using special barrier functions; these barriers are constructed by considering an operator associated to our original operator.

Irregular mappings that are weak solutions of the energy–momentum equations are presented. One example is discontinuous at a countable number of points while the other is C1, but not C2. These mappings are not solutions of the usual Euler–Lagrange equations.

In this paper we determine the asymptotic behaviour of entropy numbers of embedding maps between Besov sequence spaces and Besov function spaces. The results extend those of M. Š. Birman, M. Z. Solomjak and H. Triebel originally formulated in the language of ε-entropy. It turns out that the characterization of embedding maps between Besov spaces by entropy numbers can be reduced to the characterization of certain diagonal operators by their entropy numbers.

Finally, the entropy numbers are applied to the study of eigenvalues of operators acting on a Banach space which admit a factorization through embedding maps between Besov spaces.

The statements of this paper are obtained by results recently proved elsewhere by the author.

One of the authors having made an experimental investigation on the currents produced in a trough of water by a blast of air driven along the surface of the water, it was desired to test the correctness of his deductions by actual observations in a large lake. Loch Ness was chosen on account of its length and uniformity of basin, as it was thought that the length and narrowness of the loch would lead to clearly defined currents being set up in the lake. The sequel showed, as in the case of observations on seiches, that it would have been better to confine attention to a smaller lake, for a twofold reason, (1) because in a large lake the difficulties of observations are much greater than in a small lake during stormy weather, and in very deep lakes the difficulties in the way of obtaining a fixed point from which to use the current meter are formidable, and (2) because it would seem from a few observations made in Loch Garry (Ness Basin) that currents are more defined and more regular in small than in great lakes.

We introduce the notion of a double MS-algebra (L, 0, +) as an MS-algebra (L, 0) whose dual isan MS-algebra (Ld, +), with certain linking conditions concerning the operations x↦x0 and x↦x+. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions whereby an MS-algebra can be made into a double MS-algebra and show that this, when possible, can be done in one and only one way. We also consider the notion of a bistable subvariety of MS-algebras, namely a subvariety R with the property that, for every double MS-algebra (L, 0, +), whenever L, 0 ↦ R, we have (Ld,+)↦ R. Finally, we determine those subvarieties R of MS that are dense (in the sense that every MS-algebra L ↦ R can be made into a double MS-algebra), and those that are sparse (in the sense that if L ↦ R can be made into a double MS-algebra then it belongs to a proper subclass of R).

Using the viscosity vanishing method, we obtain the existence of a smooth solution to the inhomogeneous Heisenberg chain equations in one dimension. The uniqueness of the solution to the viscosity equation is also given.

In this paper we study the convexity of the integral over the space . We isolate a necessary condition on f and we find necessary and sufficient conditions in the case where f(x, u, u′) = a(u)u′2n or g(u) + h(u′).
