The scalar nonlinear convection-diffusion equation

is considered, for given initial data and zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, in a smooth bounded domain Ω⊂ℝn. The homogeneous viscous Burgers' equation in one dimension is well-known to possess a unique, exponentially attracting equilibrium. These properties are shown to be preserved in the generalisation considered. Furthermore, the equilibrium is shown to be bounded in the maximum norm independently of the function a. The main methods used are maximum principles, and a variational method due to Stampacchia.

In this paper we analyse the change of stability of Schrödinger semigroups with indefinite potentials when a coupling parameter varies. Generically, the change of stability takes place at a principal eigenvalue associated with the problem. The uniqueness of the principal eigenvalue is shown for several classes of potentials.

We prove the existence of a global attractor for the problem

We study a class of AC-Stark Hamiltonians H1(t) = H0(t) + V, where H0(t)= −Δ + E · x cos ωt. For a class of repulsive potentials, we show that the wave operators exist and are unitary, provided that |E|/ω2 is small. If |E|/ω2 is sufficiently large, the result remains true as long as V is sufficiently small.

For a smooth, simple closed curve α in the plane, the perpendicular bisector map P associates to each pair of distinct points (p, q) on α the perpendicular bisector of the chord joining p and q. To a pair (p, p), the map P associates the normal to α at p. The set of critical values of this map is the union of the dual of the symmetry set of α and the dual of the evolute. (The symmetry set is the locus of the centres of circles bitangent to α.) We study the mapP and use it to give a complete list of the transitions which take place on the dual of the symmetry set and the dual of the evolute, as α varies in a generic one-parameter family of plane curves.

In this paper, the general ordinary quasidifferential expression M of nth order, with complex coefficients, and its formal adjoint M− are considered. It is shown in the case of two singular endpomts and when all solutions of the equation and the adjoint equation are in (the limit-circle case) that all well-posed extensions of the minimal operator T0(M) have resolvents which are Hilbert Schmidt integral operators and consequently have a wholly discrete spectrum. This implies that all the regularly solvable operators have all of the standard essential spectra to be empty. These results extend those for the formally symmetric expression M studied in [1] and [14], and also extend those proved in [8] for one singular endpoint.

A correspondence of a semigroup S is any subsemigroup of S × S, and the set of all correspondences of S, with the operations of composition and involution and the relation of set-theoretic inclusion, forms the bundle of correspondences of S, denoted by (S). For semigroups S and T, any isomorphism of (S) onto (T) is called a -isomorphism of S upon T. Similar notion can be introduced for other types of algebras and in the general frame of category theory. The principal goal of this paper is to study -isomorphisms of completely regular semigroups (that is, unions of groups) and of one other interesting class of semigroups.

If TRf(x) is the spherical partial sum of the Fourier transform of f and T*f(x) = SUPR > 0 | TRf(x)|, sufficient conditions are given on the non-negative weight function ω(x) which ensure that T* restricted to radial functionsis bounded on the Lorentz space Lp,s(Rn,ω) into Lp,q(Rn, ω) For power weights, these conditions are also necessary. The weight pairs (u,v) for which the generalised Stieltjes transform Sλ is bounded from LP,S(R+, v)into Lp,q(R+, u)are also characterised. These are an essential ingredient for the study of T*.

Presentations of Coxeter type are defined for semigroups. Minimal right ideals of a semigroup defined by such a presentation are proved to be isomorphic to the group with the same presentation. A necessary and sufficient condition for these semigroups to be finite is found. The structure of semigroups defined by Coxeter-type presentations for the symmetric and alternating groups is examined in detail.

It is shown that Hankel transforms of functions on certain weighted LP spaces satisfy Lipschitz and integral Lipschitz conditions. In particular, Fourier-cosine and Fourier-sine transforms satisfy such Lipschitz conditions on such spaces.

Local models are given for the singularities which can appear on the trajectories of general one-dimensional motions of the plane or space. Versal unfoldings of these model singularities give simple pictures describing the family of trajectories arising from small deformations of the tracing point.

A construction is given for a trace function on the semigroup algebra of a certain type of E-unitary inverse semigroup over any subfield of the complex field that is closed under complex conjugation. In particular, the method applies to the semigroup algebras of free inverse semigroups of arbitrary rank.

We derive asymptotic formulae for the distribution functions of the real parts of the eigenvalues of an oblique derivative problem involving an indefinite weight function.

This paper is devoted to the study of the singular limit of the minimal solutions, as p → 1, of quasilinear Neumann problems involving p-Laplacian operators. It is established that the limit function is of bounded variation and is locally Höolder-continuous inside the domain.

Transition probabilities are calculated which make the construction of diffusions on finitely ramified fractals straightforward. In contrast to former approaches using Brouwer's Fixed Point Theorem, we consider an approximation procedure based on the iteration of a nonlinear map L. Physically, this is done by ‘coarse-graining-renormalisation of finite electric resistor networks’. Mathematically, it is a convergence problem for quotients of Dirichlet forms on finite graphs. These graphs approximate finitely ramified fractals. The basic tool is a contraction theorem for the renormalisation map L which allows the use of known results about nested fractals for non-nested (p.c.f. self-similar) ones. In general, the above contraction is not strict because several linear independent fixed points occur.
