Let n be a nonzero integer. A set S of positive integers is a Diophantine tuple with the property $D(n)$ if $ab+n$ is a perfect square for each $a,b \in S$ with $a \neq b$. It is of special interest to estimate the quantity $M_n$, the maximum size of a Diophantine tuple with the property $D(n)$. We show the contribution of intermediate elements is $O(\log \log |n|)$, improving a result by Dujella [‘Bounds for the size of sets with the property $D(n)$’, Glas. Mat. Ser. III 39(59)(2) (2004), 199–205]. As a consequence, we deduce that $M_n\leq (2+o(1))\log |n|$, improving the best known upper bound on $M_n$ by Becker and Murty [‘Diophantine m-tuples with the property $D(n)$’, Glas. Mat. Ser. III 54(74)(1) (2019), 65–75].

Let f be an $L^2$-normalized holomorphic newform of weight k on $\Gamma _0(N) \backslash \mathbb {H}$ with N squarefree or, more generally, on any hyperbolic surface $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb {H}$ attached to an Eichler order of squarefree level in an indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb {Q}$. Denote by V the hyperbolic volume of said surface. We prove the sup-norm estimate

with absolute implied constant. For a cuspidal Maaß newform $\varphi $ of eigenvalue $\lambda $ on such a surface, we prove that

We establish analogous estimates in the setting of definite quaternion algebras.

Let $F$ be a separable integral binary form of odd degree $N \geq 5$. A result of Darmon and Granville known as ‘Faltings plus epsilon’ implies that the degree-$N$ superelliptic equation $y^2 = F(x,z)$ has finitely many primitive integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the family $\mathscr {F}_N(f_0)$ of degree-$N$ superelliptic equations with fixed leading coefficient $f_0 \in \mathbb {Z} \smallsetminus \pm \mathbb {Z}^2$, ordered by height. For every sufficiently large $N$, we prove that among equations in the family $\mathscr {F}_N(f_0)$, more than $74.9\,\%$ are insoluble, and more than $71.8\,\%$ are everywhere locally soluble but fail the Hasse principle due to the Brauer–Manin obstruction. We further show that these proportions rise to at least $99.9\,\%$ and $96.7\,\%$, respectively, when $f_0$ has sufficiently many prime divisors of odd multiplicity. Our result can be viewed as a strong asymptotic form of ‘Faltings plus epsilon’ for superelliptic equations and constitutes an analogue of Bhargava's result that most hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb {Q}$ have no rational points.

The Manin–Peyre conjecture is established for a class of smooth spherical Fano varieties of semisimple rank one. This includes all smooth spherical Fano threefolds of type T as well as some higher-dimensional smooth spherical Fano varieties.

For $k\geq 2$ and a nonzero integer n, a generalised Diophantine m-tuple with property $D_k(n)$ is a set of m positive integers $S = \{a_1,a_2,\ldots , a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j + n$ is a kth power for $1\leq i< j\leq m$. Define $M_k(n):= \text {sup}\{|S| : S$ having property $D_k(n)\}$. Dixit et al. [‘Generalised Diophantine m-tuples’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150(4) (2022), 1455–1465] proved that $M_k(n)=O(\log n)$, for a fixed k, as n varies. In this paper, we obtain effective upper bounds on $M_k(n)$. In particular, we show that for $k\geq 2$, $M_k(n) \leq 3\,\phi (k) \log n$ if n is sufficiently large compared to k.

Let a, b, c be fixed coprime positive integers with $\min \{ a,b,c \}>1$. Let $N(a,b,c)$ denote the number of positive integer solutions $(x,y,z)$ of the equation $a^x + b^y = c^z$. We show that if $(a,b,c)$ is a triple of distinct primes for which $N(a,b,c)>1$ and $(a,b,c)$ is not one of the six known such triples, then $c>10^{18}$, and there are exactly two solutions $(x_1, y_1, z_1)$, $(x_2, y_2, z_2)$ with $2 \mid x_1$, $2 \mid y_1$, $z_1=1$, $2 \nmid y_2$, $z_2>1$, and, taking $a<b$, we must have $a=2$, $b \equiv 1 \bmod 12$, $c \equiv 5\, \mod 12$, with $(a,b,c)$ satisfying further strong restrictions. These results support a conjecture put forward by Scott and Styer [‘Number of solutions to $a^x + b^y = c^z$’, Publ. Math. Debrecen 88 (2016), 131–138].

In order to study integral points of bounded log-anticanonical height on weak del Pezzo surfaces, we classify weak del Pezzo pairs. As a representative example, we consider a quartic del Pezzo surface of singularity type $\mathbf {A}_1+\mathbf {A}_3$ and prove an analogue of Manin’s conjecture for integral points with respect to its singularities and its lines.

Let $\varphi _1,\ldots ,\varphi _r\in {\mathbb Z}[z_1,\ldots z_k]$ be integral linear combinations of elementary symmetric polynomials with $\text {deg}(\varphi _j)=k_j\ (1\le j\le r)$, where $1\le k_1<k_2<\cdots <k_r=k$. Subject to the condition $k_1+\cdots +k_r\ge \tfrac {1}{2}k(k-~1)+2$, we show that there is a paucity of nondiagonal solutions to the Diophantine system $\varphi _j({\mathbf x})=\varphi _j({\mathbf y})\ (1\le j\le r)$.

We show that the system of equations

has appreciably fewer solutions in the subcritical range $s < \tfrac 12k(k+1)$ than its homogeneous counterpart, provided that $a_{\ell } \neq 0$ for some $\ell \leqslant k-1$ . Our methods use Vinogradov’s mean value theorem in combination with a shifting argument.

In the present article, we study the following problem. Let $\boldsymbol {G}$ be a linear algebraic group over $\mathbb {Q}$, let $\Gamma$ be an arithmetic lattice, and let $\boldsymbol {H}$ be an observable $\mathbb {Q}$-subgroup. There is a $H$-invariant measure $\mu _H$ supported on the closed submanifold $H\Gamma /\Gamma$. Given a sequence $(g_n)$ in $G$, we study the limiting behavior of $(g_n)_*\mu _H$ under the weak-$*$ topology. In the non-divergent case, we give a rather complete classification. We further supplement this by giving a criterion of non-divergence and prove non-divergence for arbitrary sequence $(g_n)$ for certain large $\boldsymbol {H}$. We also discuss some examples and applications of our result. This work can be viewed as a natural extension of the work of Eskin–Mozes–Shah and Shapira–Zheng.

For any fixed nonzero integer h, we show that a positive proportion of integral binary quartic forms F do locally everywhere represent h, but do not globally represent h. We order classes of integral binary quartic forms by the two generators of their ring of ${\rm GL}_{2}({\mathbb Z})$ -invariants, classically denoted by I and J.

Aigner showed in 1934 that nontrivial quadratic solutions to $x^4 + y^4 = 1$ exist only in $\mathbb Q(\sqrt {-7})$ . Following a method of Mordell, we show that nontrivial quadratic solutions to $x^4 + 2^ny^4 = 1$ arise from integer solutions to the equations $X^4 \pm 2^nY^4 = Z^2$ investigated in 1853 by V. A. Lebesgue.

We show, under some natural restrictions, that some semigroup orbits of polynomials cannot contain too many elements of small multiplicative order modulo a large prime $p$, extending previous work of Shparlinski [‘Multiplicative orders in orbits of polynomials over finite fields’, Glasg. Math. J.60(2) (2018), 487–493].

Using work of the first author [S. Bettin, High moments of the Estermann function. Algebra Number Theory 47(3) (2018), 659–684], we prove a strong version of the Manin–Peyre conjectures with a full asymptotic and a power-saving error term for the two varieties respectively in $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times \mathbb{P}^{2}$ with bihomogeneous coordinates $[x_{1}:x_{2}:x_{3}],[y_{1}:y_{2},y_{3}]$ and in $\mathbb{P}^{1}\times \mathbb{P}^{1}\times \mathbb{P}^{1}$ with multihomogeneous coordinates $[x_{1}:y_{1}],[x_{2}:y_{2}],[x_{3}:y_{3}]$ defined by the same equation $x_{1}y_{2}y_{3}+x_{2}y_{1}y_{3}+x_{3}y_{1}y_{2}=0$. We thus improve on recent work of Blomer et al [The Manin–Peyre conjecture for a certain biprojective cubic threefold. Math. Ann. 370 (2018), 491–553] and provide a different proof based on a descent on the universal torsor of the conjectures in the case of a del Pezzo surface of degree 6 with singularity type $\mathbf{A}_{1}$ and three lines (the other existing proof relying on harmonic analysis by Chambert-Loir and Tschinkel [On the distribution of points of bounded height on equivariant compactifications of vector groups. Invent. Math. 148 (2002), 421–452]). Together with Blomer et al [On a certain senary cubic form. Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 108 (2014), 911–964] or with work of the second author [K. Destagnol, La conjecture de Manin pour une famille de variétés en dimension supérieure. Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 166(3) (2019), 433–486], this settles the study of the Manin–Peyre conjectures for this equation.

We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height in the zero-loci of Brauer group elements on semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. We obtain asymptotic formulae for the counting problem for wonderful compactifications using the spectral theory of automorphic forms. Applications include asymptotic formulae for the number of matrices over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose determinant is a sum of two squares. These results provide a positive answer to some cases of a question of Serre concerning such counting problems.

Let $\mathbf{f}=(f_{1},\ldots ,f_{R})$ be a system of polynomials with integer coefficients in which the degrees need not all be the same. We provide sufficient conditions for which the system of equations $f_{j}(x_{1},\ldots ,x_{n})=0~(1\leqslant j\leqslant R)$ satisfies a general local to global type statement, and has a solution where each coordinate is prime. In fact we obtain the asymptotic formula for number of such solutions, counted with a logarithmic weight, under these conditions. We prove the statement via the Hardy–Littlewood circle method. This is a generalization of the work of Cook and Magyar [‘Diophantine equations in the primes’, Invent. Math.198 (2014), 701–737], where they obtained the result when the polynomials of $\mathbf{f}$ all have the same degree. Hitherto, results of this type for systems of polynomial equations involving different degrees have been restricted to the diagonal case.
