In this work, we develop an integral representation for the partial L-function of a pair $\pi \times \tau $ of genuine irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations, $\pi $ of the m-fold covering of Matsumoto of the symplectic group $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$ and $\tau $ of a certain covering group of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_k$, with arbitrary m, n and k. Our construction is based on the recent extension by Cai, Friedberg, Ginzburg and the author, of the classical doubling method of Piatetski-Shapiro and Rallis, from rank-$1$ twists to arbitrary rank twists. We prove a basic global identity for the integral and compute the local integrals with unramified data. Our global results are subject to certain conjectures, but when $k=1$ they are unconditional for all m. One possible future application of this work will be a Shimura-type lift of representations from covering groups to general linear groups. In a recent work, we used the present results in order to provide an analytic definition of local factors for representations of the m-fold covering of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$.

Let X be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve defined over a finite field ${\mathbb {F}}_q$ of characteristic p different from $2$ and $S\subseteq X$ a subset of closed points. Let $\overline {X}$ and $\overline {S}$ be their base changes to an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb {F}}_q$. We study the number of $\ell $-adic local systems $(\ell \neq p)$ in rank $2$ over $\overline {X}-\overline {S}$ with all possible prescribed tame local monodromies fixed by k-fold iterated action of Frobenius endomorphism for every $k\geq 1$. In all cases, we confirm conjectures of Deligne predicting that these numbers behave as if they were obtained from a Lefschetz fixed point formula. In fact, our counting results are expressed in terms of the numbers of some Higgs bundles.

We prove a general formula that relates the parity of the Langlands parameter of a conjugate self-dual discrete series representation of $\operatorname { {GL}}_n$ to the parity of its Jacquet-Langlands image. It gives a generalization of a partial result by Mieda concerning the case of invariant $1/n$ and supercuspidal representations. It also gives a variation of the result on the self-dual case by Prasad and Ramakrishnan.

We study the growth of the local $L^2$-norms of the unitary Eisenstein series for reductive groups over number fields, in terms of their parameters. We derive a poly-logarithmic bound on an average, for a large class of reductive groups. The method is based on Arthur’s development of the spectral side of the trace formula, and ideas of Finis, Lapid and Müller.

As applications of our method, we prove the optimal lifting property for $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z}/q\mathbb {Z})$ for square-free q, as well as the Sarnak–Xue [52] counting property for the principal congruence subgroup of $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z})$ of square-free level. This makes the recent results of Assing–Blomer [8] unconditional.

Quaternionic automorphic representations are one attempt to generalize to other groups the special place holomorphic modular forms have among automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_2$. Here, we use ‘hyperendoscopy’ techniques to develop a general trace formula and understand them on an arbitrary group. Then we specialize this general formula to study quaternionic automorphic representations on the exceptional group $G_2$, eventually getting an analog of the Eichler–Selberg trace formula for classical modular forms. We finally use this together with some techniques of Chenevier, Renard and Taïbi to compute dimensions of spaces of level-$1$ quaternionic representations. On the way, we prove a Jacquet–Langlands-style result describing them in terms of classical modular forms and automorphic representations on the compact-at-infinity form $G_2^c$.

The main technical difficulty is that the quaternionic discrete series that quaternionic automorphic representations are defined in terms of do not satisfy a condition of being ‘regular’. A real representation theory argument shows that regularity miraculously does not matter for specifically the case of quaternionic discrete series.

We hope that the techniques and shortcuts highlighted in this project are of interest in other computations about discrete-at-infinity automorphic representations on arbitrary reductive groups instead of just classical ones.

In a series of three earlier papers, we considered a family of restriction problems for classical groups (over local and global fields) and proposed precise answers to these problems using the local and global Langlands correspondence. These restriction problems were formulated in terms of a pair $W \subset V$ of orthogonal, Hermitian, symplectic, or skew-Hermitian spaces. In this paper, we consider a twisted variant of these conjectures in one particular case: that of a pair of skew-Hermitian spaces $W = V$.

We give cases in which nearby cycles commute with pushforward from sheaves on the moduli stack of shtukas to a product of curves over a finite field. The proof systematically uses the property that taking nearby cycles of Satake sheaves on the Beilinson–Drinfeld Grassmannian with parahoric reduction is a central functor together with a ‘Zorro's lemma’ argument similar to that of Xue [Smoothness of cohomology sheaves of stacks of shtukas, Preprint (2020), arXiv:2012.12833]. As an application, for automorphic forms at the parahoric level, we characterize the image of tame inertia under the Langlands correspondence in terms of two-sided cells.

The main aim of this article is to show that normalised standard intertwining operator between induced representations of p-adic groups, at a very specific point of evaluation, has an arithmetic origin. This result has applications to Eisenstein cohomology and the special values of automorphic L-functions.

The aim of this corrigendum is to correct an error in Corollary 10.7 to Theorem 10.6, one of the main results in the paper ‘On the cuspidal cohomology of $S$-arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups over number fields’. This makes necessary a thorough investigation of the conditions under which a Cartan-type automorphism exists on $G_1=\mathrm {Res}_{\mathbb {C}/\mathbb {R}}G_0$, where $G_0$ is a connected semisimple algebraic group defined over $\mathbb {R}$.

La formule des traces relative de Jacquet–Rallis (pour les groupes unitaires ou les groupes linéaires généraux) est une identité entre des périodes des représentations automorphes et des distributions géométriques. Selon Jacquet et Rallis, une comparaison de ces deux formules des traces relatives devrait aboutir à une démonstration des conjectures de Gan–Gross–Prasad et Ichino–Ikeda pour les groupes unitaires. Les termes géométriques des groupes unitaires ou des groupes linéaires sont indexés par les points rationnels d'un espace quotient commun. Nous établissons que ces termes géométriques peuvent être vus comme des fonctionnelles sur des espaces d'intégrales orbitales semi-simples régulières locales. En outre, nous montrons que point par point ces distributions sont en fait égales, via l'identification des espaces d'intégrales orbitales locales donnée par le transfert et le lemme fondamental (essentiellement connus dans cette situation). Cela donne leur comparaison et cela clôt la partie géométrique du programme de Jacquet–Rallis. Notre résultat principal est donc un analogue de la stabilisation de la partie géométrique de la formule des traces due à Langlands, Kottwitz et Arthur.

This paper generalizes the Gan–Gross–Prasad (GGP) conjectures that were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the non-generic L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of Arthur parameters that governs the branching laws for ${{\rm GL}}_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in Gan et al. [Symplectic local root numbers, central critical L-values and restriction problems in the representation theory of classical groups. Sur les conjectures de Gross et Prasad. I, Astérisque 346 (2012), 1–109] including Bessel models and Fourier–Jacobi models.

In this paper, we analyze Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a finite cover G of an adelic split simply-laced group. Let $\pi $ be a minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representation of G. We prove that any $\eta \in \pi $ is completely determined by its Whittaker coefficients with respect to (possibly degenerate) characters of the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro–Shalika formula for cusp forms on $\operatorname {GL}_n$ . We also derive explicit formulas expressing the form, as well as all its maximal parabolic Fourier coefficient, in terms of these Whittaker coefficients. A consequence of our results is the nonexistence of cusp forms in the minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic spectrum. We provide detailed examples for G of type $D_5$ and $E_8$ with a view toward applications to scattering amplitudes in string theory.

In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Wei Zhang on comparison of certain local relative characters from which we draw some consequences for the Ichino–Ikeda conjecture for unitary groups.

We describe poles and the corresponding residual automorphic representations of Eisenstein series attached to maximal parabolic subgroups whose unipotent radicals admit Jordan algebra structure.

We prove an equidistribution theorem for a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms for $\mathit{GSp}_{4}/\mathbb{Q}$ in various aspects. A main tool is Arthur’s invariant trace formula. While Shin [Automorphic Plancherel density theorem, Israel J. Math.192(1) (2012), 83–120] and Shin–Templier [Sato–Tate theorem for families and low-lying zeros of automorphic $L$-functions, Invent. Math.203(1) (2016) 1–177] used Euler–Poincaré functions at infinity in the formula, we use a pseudo-coefficient of a holomorphic discrete series to extract holomorphic Siegel cusp forms. Then the non-semisimple contributions arise from the geometric side, and this provides new second main terms $A,B_{1}$ in Theorem 1.1 which have not been studied and a mysterious second term $B_{2}$ also appears in the second main term coming from the semisimple elements. Furthermore our explicit study enables us to treat more general aspects in the weight. We also give several applications including the vertical Sato–Tate theorem, the unboundedness of Hecke fields and low-lying zeros for degree 4 spinor $L$-functions and degree 5 standard $L$-functions of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms.

We study generalized and degenerate Whittaker models for reductive groups over local fields of characteristic zero (archimedean or non-archimedean). Our main result is the construction of epimorphisms from the generalized Whittaker model corresponding to a nilpotent orbit to any degenerate Whittaker model corresponding to the same orbit, and to certain degenerate Whittaker models corresponding to bigger orbits. We also give choice-free definitions of generalized and degenerate Whittaker models. Finally, we explain how our methods imply analogous results for Whittaker–Fourier coefficients of automorphic representations. For $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ this implies that a smooth admissible representation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ has a generalized Whittaker model ${\mathcal{W}}_{{\mathcal{O}}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B})$ corresponding to a nilpotent coadjoint orbit ${\mathcal{O}}$ if and only if ${\mathcal{O}}$ lies in the (closure of) the wave-front set $\operatorname{WF}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B})$. Previously this was only known to hold for $\mathbb{F}$ non-archimedean and ${\mathcal{O}}$ maximal in $\operatorname{WF}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B})$, see Moeglin and Waldspurger [Modeles de Whittaker degeneres pour des groupes p-adiques, Math. Z. 196 (1987), 427–452]. We also express ${\mathcal{W}}_{{\mathcal{O}}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B})$ as an iteration of a version of the Bernstein–Zelevinsky derivatives [Bernstein and Zelevinsky, Induced representations of reductive p-adic groups. I., Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 10 (1977), 441–472; Aizenbud et al., Derivatives for representations of$\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$and$\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$, Israel J. Math. 206 (2015), 1–38]. This enables us to extend to $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ several further results by Moeglin and Waldspurger on the dimension of ${\mathcal{W}}_{{\mathcal{O}}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B})$ and on the exactness of the generalized Whittaker functor.

Let $\mathbf{G}$ be the connected reductive group of type $E_{7,3}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathfrak{T}$ be the corresponding symmetric domain in $\mathbb{C}^{27}$. Let ${\rm\Gamma}=\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Z})$ be the arithmetic subgroup defined by Baily. In this paper, for any positive integer $k\geqslant 10$, we will construct a (non-zero) holomorphic cusp form on $\mathfrak{T}$ of weight $2k$ with respect to ${\rm\Gamma}$ from a Hecke cusp form in $S_{2k-8}(\text{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}))$. We follow Ikeda’s idea of using Siegel’s Eisenstein series, their Fourier–Jacobi expansions, and the compatible family of Eisenstein series.

Let ${\mathcal{K}}$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Let ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$ be irreducible generic cohomological automorphic representation of $\text{GL}(n)/{\mathcal{K}}$ and $\text{GL}(n-1)/{\mathcal{K}}$, respectively. Each of them can be given two natural rational structures over number fields. One is defined by the rational structure on topological cohomology, and the other is given in terms of the Whittaker model. The ratio between these rational structures is called a Whittaker period. An argument presented by Mahnkopf and Raghuram shows that, at least if ${\rm\Pi}$ is cuspidal and the weights of ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$ are in a standard relative position, the critical values of the Rankin–Selberg product $L(s,{\rm\Pi}\times {\rm\Pi}^{\prime })$ are essentially algebraic multiples of the product of the Whittaker periods of ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$. We show that, under certain regularity and polarization hypotheses, the Whittaker period of a cuspidal ${\rm\Pi}$ can be given a motivic interpretation, and can also be related to a critical value of the adjoint $L$-function of related automorphic representations of unitary groups. The resulting expressions for critical values of the Rankin–Selberg and adjoint $L$-functions are compatible with Deligne’s conjecture.

Cet article est une contribution à la fois au calcul du nombre de fibrés de Hitchin sur une courbe projective et à l’explicitation de la partie nilpotente de la formule des traces d’Arthur-Selberg pour une fonction test très simple. Le lien entre les deux questions a été établi dans [Chaudouard, Sur le comptage des fibrés de Hitchin. À paraître aux actes de la conférence en l’honneur de Gérard Laumon]. On décompose cette partie nilpotente en une somme d’intégrales adéliques indexées par les orbites nilpotentes. Pour les orbites de type «régulières par blocs», on explicite complètement ces intégrales en termes de la fonction zêta de la courbe.
