We examine the maximum dimension of a linear system of plane cubic curves whose $\mathbb {F}_q$-members are all geometrically irreducible. Computational evidence suggests that such a system has a maximum (projective) dimension of $3$. As a step towards the conjecture, we prove that there exists a three-dimensional linear system $\mathcal {L}$ with at most one geometrically reducible $\mathbb {F}_q$-member.

Inspired by the work of Bourgain and Garaev (2013), we provide new bounds for certain weighted bilinear Kloosterman sums in polynomial rings over a finite field. As an application, we build upon and extend some results of Sawin and Shusterman (2022). These results include bounds for exponential sums weighted by the Möbius function and a level of distribution for irreducible polynomials beyond 1/2, with arbitrary composite modulus. Additionally, we can do better when averaging over the modulus, to give an analogue of the Bombieri-Vinogradov Theorem with a level of distribution even further beyond 1/2.

Let p be a prime, $q=p^n$, and $D \subset \mathbb {F}_q^*$. A celebrated result of McConnel states that if D is a proper subgroup of $\mathbb {F}_q^*$, and $f:\mathbb {F}_q \to \mathbb {F}_q$ is a function such that $(f(x)-f(y))/(x-y) \in D$ whenever $x \neq y$, then $f(x)$ necessarily has the form $ax^{p^j}+b$. In this notes, we give a sufficient condition on D to obtain the same conclusion on f. In particular, we show that McConnel’s theorem extends if D has small doubling.

Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field of odd order and $a,b\in\mathbb F\setminus\{0,1\}$ be such that $\chi(a) = \chi(b)$ and $\chi(1-a)=\chi(1-b)$, where χ is the extended quadratic character on $\mathbb F$. Let $Q_{a,b}$ be the quasigroup over $\mathbb F$ defined by $(x,y)\mapsto x+a(y-x)$ if $\chi(y-x) \geqslant 0$, and $(x,y)\mapsto x+b(y-x)$ if $\chi(y-x) = -1$. We show that $Q_{a,b} \cong Q_{c,d}$ if and only if $\{a,b\}= \{\alpha(c),\alpha(d)\}$ for some $\alpha\in \operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb F)$. We also characterize $\operatorname{Aut}(Q_{a,b})$ and exhibit further properties, including establishing when $Q_{a,b}$ is a Steiner quasigroup or is commutative, entropic, left or right distributive, flexible or semisymmetric. In proving our results, we also characterize the minimal subquasigroups of $Q_{a,b}$.

Let q be an odd prime power and suppose that $a,b\in \mathbb {F}_q$ are such that $ab$ and $(1{-}a)(1{-}b)$ are nonzero squares. Let $Q_{a,b} = (\mathbb {F}_q,*)$ be the quasigroup in which the operation is defined by $u*v=u+a(v{-}u)$ if $v-u$ is a square, and $u*v=u+b(v{-}u)$ if $v-u$ is a nonsquare. This quasigroup is called maximally nonassociative if it satisfies $x*(y*z) = (x*y)*z \Leftrightarrow x=y=z$. Denote by $\sigma (q)$ the number of $(a,b)$ for which $Q_{a,b}$ is maximally nonassociative. We show that there exist constants $\alpha \approx 0.029\,08$ and $\beta \approx 0.012\,59$ such that if $q\equiv 1 \bmod 4$, then $\lim \sigma (q)/q^2 = \alpha $, and if $q \equiv 3 \bmod 4$, then $\lim \sigma (q)/q^2 = \beta $.

For any algebraically closed field K and any endomorphism f of $\mathbb{P}^1(K)$ of degree at least 2, the automorphisms of f are the Möbius transformations that commute with f, and these form a finite subgroup of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(K)$ . In the moduli space of complex dynamical systems, the locus of maps with nontrivial automorphisms has been studied in detail and there are techniques for constructing maps with prescribed automorphism groups that date back to Klein. We study the corresponding questions when K is the algebraic closure $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of a finite field. We use the classification of finite subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ to show that every finite subgroup is realizable as an automorphism group. To construct examples, we use methods from modular invariant theory. Then, we calculate the locus of maps over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of degree 2 with nontrivial automorphisms, showing how the geometry and possible automorphism groups depend on the prime p.

We prove that for any prime power $q\notin \{3,4,5\}$ , the cubic extension $\mathbb {F}_{q^{3}}$ of the finite field $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ contains a primitive element $\xi $ such that $\xi +\xi ^{-1}$ is also primitive, and $\operatorname {\mathrm {Tr}}_{\mathbb {F}_{q^{3}}/\mathbb {F}_{q}}(\xi )=a$ for any prescribed $a\in \mathbb {F}_{q}$ . This completes the proof of a conjecture of Gupta et al. [‘Primitive element pairs with one prescribed trace over a finite field’, Finite Fields Appl. 54 (2018), 1–14] concerning the analogous problem over an extension of arbitrary degree $n\ge 3$ .

We provide an easy method for the construction of characteristic polynomials of simple ordinary abelian varieties ${{\mathcal A}}$ of dimension g over a finite field ${{\mathbb F}}_q$ , when $q\ge 4$ and $2g=\rho ^{b-1}(\rho -1)$ , for some prime $\rho \ge 5$ with $b\ge 1$ . Moreover, we show that ${{\mathcal A}}$ is absolutely simple if $b=1$ and g is prime, but ${{\mathcal A}}$ is not absolutely simple for any prime $\rho \ge 5$ with $b>1$ .

In this paper, we completely solve the $L^{2}\to L^{r}$ extension conjecture for the zero radius sphere over finite fields. We also obtain the sharp $L^{p}\to L^{4}$ extension estimate for non-zero radii spheres over finite fields, which improves the previous result of the first and second authors significantly.

We present the geometry behind counting twin prime polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q}[T]$ in general. We compute cohomology and explicitly count points by means of a twisted Lefschetz trace formula applied to these parametrizing varieties for cubic twin prime polynomials. The elliptic curve $X^{3}=Y(Y-1)$ occurs in the geometry, and thus counting cubic twin prime polynomials involves the associated modular form. In theory, this approach can be extended to higher degree twin primes, but the computations become harder.

The formula we get in degree 3 is compatible with the Hardy–Littlewood heuristic on average, agrees with the prediction for $q\equiv 2$ (mod 3), but shows anomalies for $q\equiv 1$ (mod 3).

We prove that if $C$ is a reflexive smooth plane curve of degree $d$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with $d\leqslant q+1$, then there is an $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-line $L$ that intersects $C$ transversely. We also prove the same result for non-reflexive curves of degree $p+1$ and $2p+1$ when $q=p^{r}$.

We prove a function field analogue of Maynard’s celebrated result about primes with restricted digits. That is, for certain ranges of parameters $n$ and $q$, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of irreducible polynomials of degree $n$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ whose coefficients are restricted to lie in a given subset of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$.

We improve some previously known deterministic algorithms for finding integer solutions $x,y$ to the exponential equation of the form $af^{x}+bg^{y}=c$ over finite fields.

We give a new proof of the Hansen–Mullen irreducibility conjecture. The proof relies on an application of a (seemingly new) sufficient condition for the existence of elements of degree $n$ in the support of functions on finite fields. This connection to irreducible polynomials is made via the least period of the discrete Fourier transform $\left( \text{DFT} \right)$ of functions with values in finite fields. We exploit this relation and prove, in an elementary fashion, that a relevant function related to the $\text{DFT}$ of characteristic elementary symmetric functions (that produce the coefficients of characteristic polynomials) satisfies a simple requirement on the least period. This bears a sharp contrast to previous techniques employed in the literature to tackle the existence of irreducible polynomials with prescribed coefficients.

In this note, we give an upper bound for the number of elements from the interval $[1,p^{1/4\sqrt{e}+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}]$ necessary to generate the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{\ast }$ with $p$ an odd prime. The general result depends on the distribution of the divisors of $p-1$ and can be used to deduce results which hold for almost all primes.
