The discovery of new clear windows in the Galactic plane using the VVV near-IR extinction maps allows the study of the structure of the Milky Way (MW) disk. The ultimate goal of this work is to map the spiral arms in the far side of the MW, which is a relatively unexplored region of our Galaxy, using red clump (RC) giants as distance indicators. We search for near-IR clear windows located at low Galactic latitudes ( $|b|< 1$ deg) in the MW disk using the VVV near-IR extinction maps. We have identified two new windows named VVV WIN 1607–5258 and VVV WIN 1475–5877, respectively, that complement the previously known window VVV WIN 1713–3939. We analyse the distribution of RC stars in these three clear near-IR windows and measure their number density along the line of sight. This allows us to find overdensities in the distribution and measure their distances along the line of sight. We then use the VVV proper motions in order to measure the kinematics of the RC stars at different distances. We find enhancements in the distance distribution of RC giants in all the studied windows, interpreting them as the presence of spiral arms in the MW disk. These structures are absent in the current models of synthetic population for the same MW lines of sight. We were able to trace the end of the Galactic bar, the Norma arm, as well as the Scutum–Centaurus arm in the far disk. Using the VVV proper motions, we measure the kinematics for these Galactic features, confirming that they share the bulk rotation of the Galactic disk.

Following from our recent work, we present results of a detailed analysis of a representative sample of nearby galaxies. The photometric parameters of the morphological components are obtained from bulge-disk decompositions, using GALFIT software. The previously obtained method and library of numerical corrections for dust, decomposition and projection effects, are used to correct the measured (observed) parameters to intrinsic values. Observed and intrinsic galaxy dust and star-formation related scaling relations are presented, to emphasize the scale of the biases introduced by these effects. To understand the extent to which star-formation is distributed in the young stellar disks of galaxies, star-formation connected relations which rely on measurements of scale-lengths and fluxes/luminosities of Hα images, are shown. The mean dust opacity, dust-to-stellar mass and dust-to-gas ratios of the sample, together with the main characteristics of the intrinsic relations are found to be consistent with values found in the literature.

The velocity-space distribution of the solar neighborhood stars shows complex substructures (moving groups) including the well-known Hercules stream. Recently, the Gaia observation revealed their detailed structures, but their origins are still in debate. We analyzed a high-resolution N-body simulation of a Milky Way (MW)-like galaxy. To find velocity-space distributions similar to that of the solar neighborhood stars, we used Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD), which is a metric to measure similarities between probability distributions. The KLD analysis shows the time evolution and the spatial variation of the velocity-space distribution. Velocity-space distributions with small KLDs (i.e. high similarities) are frequently but not always detected around in the simulated MW. In the velocity-map with smallest KLD, the velocity-space substructures are made from bar resonances.

We used the spectroscopic and astrometric data provided from the GALactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) Data Release (DR2) and Gaia DR2, respectively, for a large sample of stars to investigate the behaviour of the [ $\alpha$ /Fe] abundances via two procedures, that is, kinematically and spectroscopically. With the kinematical procedure, we investigated the distribution of the [ $\alpha$ /Fe] abundances into the high-/low-probability thin disc, and high-/low-probability thick-disc populations in terms of total space velocity, [Fe/H] abundance, and age. The high-probability thin-disc stars dominate in all sub-intervals of [ $\alpha$ /Fe], including the rich ones: [ $\alpha$ /Fe] $\,>\,0.3$ dex, where the high-probability thick-disc stars are expected to dominate. This result can be explained by the limiting apparent magnitude of the GALAH DR2 ( $V \lt 14$ mag) and intermediate galactic latitude of the star sample. Stars in the four populations share equivalent [ $\alpha$ /Fe] and [Fe/H] abundances, total space velocities, and ages. Hence, none of these parameters can be used alone for separation of a sample of stars into different populations. High-probability thin-disc stars with abundance $-1.3 \lt {\rm[Fe/H]}\leq -0.5$ dex and age $9 \lt \tau\leq13$ Gyr are assumed to have different birth places relative to the metal-rich and younger ones. With the spectroscopic procedure, we separated the sample stars into $\alpha$ -rich and $\alpha$ -poor categories by means of their ages as well as their [ $\alpha$ /Fe] and [Fe/H] abundances. Stars older than 8 Gyr are richer in [ $\alpha$ /Fe] than the younger ones. We could estimate the abundance [ $\alpha$ /Fe] = 0.14 dex as the boundary separating the $\alpha$ -rich and $\alpha$ -poor sub-samples in the [ $\alpha$ /Fe] $\,\times\,$ [Fe/H] plane.

The unprecedented amount and accuracy of kinematic data from the second release of the Gaia mission have started revolutionizing our understanding of the dynamics of the Milky Way disk. The detailed stellar velocity field in the Galactic disk should allow us to constrain with unprecedented precision the parameters of the non-axisymmetric modes of the disk. We present here the status of our current modelling efforts in this area, and their implication on the dynamics of the Galactic bar in particular.

We study the vertical stellar distribution of the Milky Way thin disk treated as a gravitationally coupled system of stars, HI and H2 gas in the field of dark matter halo, from R = 4 to 22 kpc. We show that the gas and halo gravity mainly constrain this vertical distribution toward the mid-plane in the inner and the outer Galaxy, respectively. The halo gravity reduces the disk thickness by a factor of 3-4 in the outer Galaxy. Despite this constraining effect the disk thickness increases steadily with radius, flaring steeply beyond 17 kpc, making a flaring disk a generic result.

The on-going phase mixing in the vertical direction of the Galactic disk has been discovered with the revolutionary Gaia DR2 data. It manifests itself as the snail shell in the Z–Vz phase space. To better understand the origin and properties of the phase mixing process, we study the phase-mixing signatures in moving groups (also known as the kinematic streams) with the Gaia DR2 data in the Galactic disk near the Solar circle. Interestingly, the phase space snail shell exists only in the main kinematic streams with |VR|≲ 50 km/s and |Vφ –VLSR|≲30 km/s, i.e., stars on dynamically “colder” orbits. Compared to the colder orbits, the hotter orbits may have phase-wrapped away already due to the much larger dynamical range in radial variation to facilitate faster phase mixing. These results help put tighter constraints on the vertical perturbation history of the Milky Way disk. To explain the lack of a well-defined snail shell in the hotter orbits, the disk should have been perturbed at least ∼400–500 Myr ago. Our results offer more support to the recent satellite-disk encounter scenario than the internal bar buckling perturbation scenario as the origin of the phase space mixing.

We have collected 2330 Cepheids to establish an intuitive 3D map of the Milky Way’s disk. As regards the warp amplitude, the Cepheid disk agrees well with the gas disk for radii up to 15 kpc. However, the mean line of nodes (LON) of the Cepheid disk deviates from the Galactic Center–Sun direction by 17.5±1.0°. This is a new and different result compared with previous results. The LON is not stable at any given radius, but it twists. The twisted pattern suggests that the formation of the Milky Way’s warp is dominated by the massive inner disk. The kinematic warp defined by the Cepheids is also in concordance with the spatial warp. In the 2020 era, the anticipated increasing number of new Cepheids will provide a key opportunity to view our Milky Way’s disk as a whole, and we expect that our knowledge of the disk’s main structural features will be much improved.

The Galactic globular cluster system went and is still going through dynamical processes that require to be explored in detail. Here we illustrate how primordial massive globular clusters born in the Milky Way’s disc evolved by stripping material from each other or even merging very early during their lives. These processes might explain the puzzling presence of star-by-star spreads in iron content observed in massive globular clusters and should be taken into account when studying globular cluster stellar populations. In this context, we show how the direct comparison between the predictions provided by our direct N-body simulations and observations can shed light on the origin and chemo-dynamical evolution of globular clusters.

We investigate the spectral properties of red supergiant stars in the four RSGCs (RSGC2, RSGC3, RSGC4, RSGC5, and Alicante 10) in the Scutum-Crux arm of the Milky Way. The high-resolution (R: 45,000) near-infrared (H and K bands) spectra for 41 red supergiants were obtained using IGRINS at Gemini South telescope. The calibration of effective temperatures and gravities are derived based on the EWTi and EWCO using supergiants in IGIRNS library. The resulted temperatures and gravities are consistent with previous results. Model spectra were synthesized using derived stellar parameters from which we estimate metallicities and chemical abundances like α-elements. In our preliminary result, we find that overall four RSGCs indeed have sub-solar metallicities as already known in previous studies. The metallicity properties of RSGCs are far off the nominal metallicity trend in this region, and this suggests recent low-metallicity gas fueling into the inner disk and bulge.

We imaged the galaxy NGC 7020 with Gemini and GMOS-S interference filters centered on the Hα emission line and nearby continuum in order to detect and quantify the HII regions. Among about 200 HII regions, we detected two Hα emitting plumes or arms emerging from the galactic nucleus which, together with the nuclear emission, might indicate a process of feedback from the central region.

Radial metallicity gradients measured today in the interstellar medium (ISM) and stellar components of disk galaxies are the result of chemo-dynamical evolution since the beginning of disk formation. This makes it difficult to infer the disk past without knowledge of the ISM metallicity gradient evolution with cosmic time. We show that abundance gradients are meaningful only if stellar age information is available. The observed gradient inversion with distance from the disk mid-plane seen in the Milky Way can be explained as the effect of inside-out disk formation and disk flaring of mono-age populations. A novel recent method is presented for constraining the evolution of the Galactic ISM metallicity with radius and time directly from the observations, while at the same time recovering the birth radii of any stellar sample with precise metallicity and age measurements.

Meteoritic evidence shows that the Solar system at birth contained significant quantities of short-lived radioisotopes (SLRs) such as 60Fe and 26Al produced in supernova explosions and in the Wolf-Rayet winds. Explaining how they travelled from these origin sites to the primitive Solar system before decaying is an outstanding problem. In this paper, we present a chemo-hydrodynamical simulation of the entire Milky Way to measure for the distribution of 60Fe/56Fe and 26Al/27Al ratios over all stars in the Galaxy. We show that the Solar abundance ratios are well within the normal range. We find that SLRs are abundant in newborn stars because star formation is correlated on Galactic scales, so that ejecta preferentially enrich atomic gas that will subsequently be accreted onto existing GMCs or will form new ones. Thus new generations of stars preferentially form in patches of the Galaxy contaminated by previous generations of stellar feedback.

We examine the metallicity trends in the Milky Way (MW) bulge – using APOGEE DR13 data – and explore their origin by comparing two N-body models of isolated galaxies which develop a bar and a boxy/peanut (b/p) bulge. Both models have been proposed as scenarios for reconciling a disc origin of the MW bulge with a negative vertical metallicity gradient. The first is a superposition of co-spatial disc populations, different scaleheights and metallicities (with flat gradients) where the thick, metal-poor populations contribute significantly to the stellar mass budget in the inner galaxy. The second model is a single disc with an initial steep radial metallicity gradient which gets mapped by the bar into the b/p bulge in such a way that the vertical metallicity gradient of the MW bulge is reproduced – as shown already in previous works in the literature. As we show here, the latter model does not reproduce the positive longitudinal metallicity gradient of the inner disc, nor the metal-poor innermost regions seen in the data. The model with co-spatial thin and thick disc populations reproduces all the aforementioned trends. We therefore see that it is possible to reconcile a (primarily) disc origin for the MW bulge with the observed trends in metallicity by mapping the inner thin and thick discs of the MW into a b/p.

Based on cosmological re-simulations we have shown that the impact of satellite galaxies has a minor effect on the thin disc heating. In contrast satellite galaxies can generate long-lived warps of the outer disc and they can advance or delay bar formation significantly.

The study of radial metallicity gradients in the disc of the Milky Way is a powerful tool to understand the mechamisms that have been acting in the formation and evolution of the Galactic disc. In this proceeding, I will put the eye on some problems that should be carefully addressed to obtain precise determinations of the metallicity gradients.

We explore the Milky Way supershell GS242-03+37. We argue that the observed HI distribution can be explained as an expanding structure about 100 Myr old powered with a modest energy released by an OB association. The formation of star clusters has been triggered less than 30 Myr ago when the ISM density in the supershell increased due to the galactic differential rotation. The observed age sequence of young star clusters is related to the evolution of the column density during the supershell expansion.

The present-day response of a Galactic disc stellar population to a non-axisymmetric perturbation of the potential, in the form of a bar or spiral arms, can be treated, away from the main resonances, through perturbation theory within the action-angle coordinates of the unperturbed axisymmetric system. The first order moments of such a perturbed distribution function (DF) in the presence of spiral arms give rise to non-zero radial and vertical mean stellar velocities, called breathing modes. Such an Eulerian linearized treatment however diverges at resonances. The Lagrangian approach to the impact of non-axisymmetries at resonances avoids this problem. It is based on the construction of new orbital tori in the resonant trapping region, which come complete with a new system of angle-action variables. These new tori can be populated by phase-averaging the unperturbed DF over the new tori. This boils down to phase-mixing the DF in terms of the new angles, such that the DF for trapped orbits only depends on the new set of actions. This opens the way to quantitatively fitting the effects of the bar and spirals to Gaia data with an action-based DF.

The four main findings about the age and abundance structure of the Milky Way bulge based on microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars are: (1) a wide metallicity distribution with distinct peaks at [Fe/H] = -1.09, -0.63, -0.20, +0.12, +0.41; (2) a high fraction of intermediate-age to young stars where at [Fe/H] > 0 more than 35 % are younger than 8 Gyr, (3) several episodes of significant star formation in the bulge 3, 6, 8, and 11 Gyr ago; (4) the ‘knee’ in the α-element abundance trends of the sub-solar metallicity bulge appears to be located at a slightly higher [Fe/H] (about 0.05 to 0.1 dex) than in the local thick disk.

We show how to capture the behaviour of the phase-space distribution function (DF) of a Galactic disc stellar population at a resonance. This is done by averaging the Hamiltonian over fast angle variables and re-expressing the DF in terms of a new set of canonical actions and angles variables valid in the resonant region. We then assign to the resonant DF the time average along the orbits of the axisymmetric DF expressed in the new set of actions and angles. This boils down to phase-mixing the DF in terms of the new angles, such that the DF for trapped orbits only depends on the new set of actions. This opens the way to quantitatively fitting the effects of the bar and spirals to Gaia data in terms of distribution functions in action space.
