Understanding the characteristics of young stellar populations is essential for deriving insights into star formation processes within parent molecular clouds and the influence of massive stars on these processes. This study primarily aims to investigate the young stellar objects (YSOs) within the molecular cloud G 045.49+00.04, including three ultra-compact HII (UC HII) regions: G 45.48+0.13 (IRAS 19117+1107), G 45.45+0.06 (IRAS 19120+1103), and G 45.47+0.05. We used near-, mid-, and far-infrared photometric data along with radiation transfer models and the modified blackbody fitting to identify and study the YSOs and the interstellar medium (ISM). In total, we identified 1482 YSOs in a 12 arcmin radius covering GRSMC 045.49+00.04, with a mass range from 1.5 M${}_{\odot}$ to 22 M${}_{\odot}$. Of these, 315 objects form relatively dense clusters in the UC HII regions, close to the IRAS 19120+1103 and 19117+1107 sources. In each UC HII region, several high-mass stars have been identified, which in all likelihood are responsible for the ionization. The YSOs with 21.8 M${}_{\odot}$ and 13.7 ± 0.4 M${}_{\odot}$ are associated with IRAS 19120+1103 and 19117+1107, respectively. The non-cluster YSOs (1168) are uniformly distributed on the field. The distribution of YSOs from both samples on the colour-magnitude diagram and by the evolutionary ages is different. About 75% of objects in the IRAS clusters are concentrated around the Zero Age Main Sequence and have a well-defined peak at an age of Log(Age[years]) $\approx$ 6.75, with a narrow spread. The non-cluster objects have two concentrations located to the right and left of the 0.1 Myr isochrone and two well-defined peaks at Log(Age) $\approx$ 6.25 and 5.25. The fraction of the near-infrared excess stars, as well as the mass function confirm that the evolutionary age of the cluster is about 1 Myr. The K luminosity functions’ α slopes for the IRAS clusters and non-cluster objects are 0.32 ± 0.04 and 0.72 ± 0.13, respectively. The steeper α slope is suggesting that the non-cluster objects are less evolved, which is well consistent with the evolutionary age. Similar results – including evolutionary age, narrow age spread, and the less evolved nature of non-cluster objects – were also observed for the YSOs in the neighbouring G 45.14+00.14. The both regions (G 045.49+00.04 and G 45.14+00.14) are located and distinguished by their brightness and density at the edge of the bubble around the highly variable X-ray binary GRS 1915+105, which includes a black hole and a K-giant companion. Based on the above, we can assume that the process of star formation in the young IRAS clusters was triggered by the GRS 1915+105-initiated shock front inside the ISM massive condensation, through the process of ‘collecting and collapse’. Most non-cluster objects probably belong to a later generation. Their formation could be triggered by the recurrent activity of GRS 1915+105 and/or through the edge collapse scenario and mass accumulation through the gas flows along the ISM filaments.

The protostellar environment where young stars form has physical conditions suitable to excite a number of molecular maser lines that have traditionally provided an unique probe of star formation kinematics, at the highest angular resolution of radio very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. In the following, we will discuss a number of recent results on our understanding of the gas dynamics traced by masers in the vicinity of young forming stars. These findings provide direct clues on how our community can substantially contribute to the field of star formation in the next decade.

We are investigating the extended outflow from G25.82–W1, which is one of the members of the high-mass protocluster G25.82–0.17. The aim is to study the star-forming environment of G25.82–W1. To identify the outflow, we obtained CO 2-1 data using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array.

We have identified several spatial and spectral outflows, including: 1) an extended N1–S1 CO outflow, driven by a high-mass young stellar object (HM-YSO) named G25.82–W1; 2) an elongated SE–NW outflow powered by G25.82–W2; 3) a compact and curved N2–S2 CO outflow originating from G25.82–E; and 4) a pair of knotty lobes centered on G25.82–W.

Furthermore, the innermost region of the N1–S1 CO outflow, traced by the 22 GHz H2O maser, reveals a complex spatial and velocity structure within a 2” from its launching point.

To accurately calculate the properties of the N1–S1 CO outflow, we have utilized an accurate distance measurement of d=4.5 kpc, derived from the annual parallax of the H2O masers. The outflow rate and force are comparable to those observed in outflows from other HM-YSOs. The physical properties of the N1–S1 CO outflow follow a trend connecting the low and high-mass regimes, supporting the idea that the star-forming mode in G25.82–W1 is likely a scaled-up version of low-mass star formation.

The ALMA observations of the high-mass star-forming region G10.34-0.14 reveal the existence of three massive hot cores. The most massive of these cores, core S1, exhibits both high and low-velocity jet/outflow in the CO, SiO, and CH3OH. It is associated with water and Class I methanol masers. The core N shows a low-velocity CO outflow and is associated with an Extended Green Object, along with Class I and II methanol masers. The characteristics of the outflows and masers in these two cores suggest they are in different stage of evolution and varying physical conditions.

Since 2017, and the formation of the maser monitoring organisation (M2O), we have observed several intriguing events. These events have included possible accretion bursts, strong jets, periodicity after a flare, a heat-wave of radiation travelling outward at a fraction of the speed of light, to name a few. In September 2019 the M2O was notified of another source showing flaring behavior, and here we present the possibility of the first discovery of long-term maser periodicity from the high-mass star formation region (HMSFR) G024.33+0.14, with a period of about 3000 days.

Recently, remarkable progress has been made in understanding the formation of high mass stars. Observations provided direct evidence that massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), analogously to low-mass ones, form via disk-mediated accretion accompanied by episodic accretion bursts, possibly caused by disk fragmentation. In the case of MYSOs, the mechanism theoretically provides a means to overcome radiation pressure, but in practice it is poorly studied - only three accretion bursts in MYSOs have been caught in action to date. A significant contribution to the development of the theory has been made with the study of masers, which have proven to be a powerful tool for locating “bursting” MYSOs. This overview focuses on the exceptional role that masers play in the search and study of accretion bursts in massive protostars.

Long-term monitoring observations of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers by Hitachi 32-m operated by Ibaraki University, which are named as “the Ibaraki 6.7 GHz Methanol Maser Monitor (iMet)”, have revealed that the periods of the flux variability of 6.7 GHz methanol masers in the five high-mass star-forming regions G05.900-0.430, G06.795-0.257, G10.472+0.027, G12.209-0.102 and G13.657-0.599 are over 1000 days. These periods are approximately twice the longest known period of 6.7 GHz methanol masers of 668 days for G196.45-1.68. The facts that the flux variation patterns show symmetric sine curves and that the luminosity of the central protostar and periods of maser flux variation are consistent with the expected period-luminosity (PL) relation suggest that the mechanism of maser flux variability of G05.900-0.430, G10.472+0.027 and G12.209-0.102 can be explained by protostellar pulsation instability. From the period-luminosity relation, central stars of these three sources are expected to be very high-mass protostars with a mass of : ∼40 M⊚ and a mass accretion rate of : ∼2×10-2 M⊚yr-1. On the other hand, G06.795-0.257 and G13.657-0.599 have luminosities that are an order of magnitude smaller than that expected from PL relation, and the variation patterns are intermittent, suggesting a variation mechanism of these sources originated from binary system.

The African VLBI Network (AVN) is slowly becoming a reality. A couple of successful fringe test observations have been conducted even as single-dish maser monitoring observations constitute the main activity on the telescopes (HartRAO 26 m and Ghana 32 m). Some of the recent observational results from the AVN telescopes includes detection of velocity drifts in masers. Although MeerKAT is largely designed for high sensitivity continuum and HI science, its bands cover some masers and is already making impressive discoveries. The need to grow the critical mass of radio astronomers in the African continent persists. The NWU 4-dish interferometer, the Nigeria 3.7 m radio telescope and the African Millimeter Telescope (AMT) are some of the initiatives that will significantly improve the statistics of radio astronomers in Africa.

We report the results of a 7-year monitoring program using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) for the 9.9 GHz class I methanol maser in G331.13-0.24 where a periodic class II methanol maser is present. The great deal of the project was to control systematics at an unprecedented level. Although no periodic flux variation was found, the maser shows a very stable decline of 166±7 μJy/day. The radial velocity of the maser is stable down to 1 m/s level. We also report a marginal periodic signal in radial velocity (comparable to the level of systematics) of about 20±7 cm/s with the period of 475±22 days, close to that of the 6.7-GHz maser in the source. No hyperfine split was detected which suggests preferential excitation of a single hyperfine transition.

In 2015, the high-mass star-forming region NGC6334I-MM1 underwent an accretion burst. Using VERA, we monitored 22 GHz water masers before and during the accretion burst to observe the changes in the maser spatial and velocity distributions in the region. The masers in CM2-W2 and MM1-W1 displayed variability that could be attributed to the accretion burst. The bright masers in CM2-W2 were found to better trace the shock structure as the epochs progressed. The mean 3D speeds derived from the proper motions were 50 km/s and 54 km/s for the pre-burst and burst epochs respectively. High-velocity proper motions were found at the southern edges of the N-S (∼80 km s−1) and NW-SE (∼150 km s−1) bipolar outflows. The precise mechanism of the flaring of the water masers due to the accretion burst has yet to be investigated.

Context: Theoretical scenarios describe the phenomenon of mass accumulation by high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) through disk accretion. Aims: To find out whether the rotation of the core around hyper-compact (HC) HII regions is common Methods: The molecular core G301.1364-00.2249A was selected as the subject of investigation. Observations were carried out on CH3CN, SO2, H29α radio recombination line and continuum emission. Analysis involved the “Moment 0, 1, 2" and “Population-diagram” methods. Result: The structures of G301.1364-00.2249A exhibited clear definition. CH3CN moment 0 images revealed multiple enhanced emission regions and an absorption area. The moment 1 image depicted a velocity gradient from southeast to northwest. Conclusion: The molecular gas has a rotational motion in the direction from the southeast to northwest. The rotational temperature was measured at 293 K.

High brightness and low interstellar extinction allow the 6.7 GHz methanol (CH3OH) masers to carry the information about what happens in the vicinity of the High-Mass Young Stellar Objects (HMYSOs). Monitoring this transition provides an only one opportunity to catch rare, unusual phenomena. In this paper, I describe three of them: quasi-periodic flares of the red-shifted emission in Cep A HW2, accretion burst in S255-NIRS3 and reappearance of the methanol maser flare in G24.329+0.144.

The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used for an interferometric follow up observation at 104.3 GHz of the targets where either this or the 9.9-GHz maser was previously detected. We confirm the significant difference (by more than 1.5 orders of magnitude) from source to source of the flux density ratio for these two maser transitions. Based on the morphology and location of continuum sources, the most likely explanation of this discrepancy is the difference in the flux density of the seed radiation at the two frequencies. We also report absolute positions (with arcsec accuracy) for all detected 104.3 GHz masers.

We monitored 22 GHz water masers in NGC 2071-IR using the Hartebeesthoek 26-m telescope and identified a significant flare (up to 4722 Jy) originating from the 14.4 km s-1 feature associated with the protostellar core NGC 2071-IRS1. To determine if the maser flare resulted from an accretion burst, we analyzed related signatures such as simultaneous flaring of other maser species and an increase in infrared luminosity. Near-infrared (Ks-band) observations conducted on 28 December 2019 during the flare, using the Kanata/HONIR telescope, exhibited a 0.2 magnitude increase in comparison to the 2MASS magnitude obtained from observations conducted on 10 October 1999. However, our findings indicate that the flare was attributed to mechanisms other than an accretion burst.

This is a multi-wavelength study to examine the G45.804-0.355 massive star-forming region (SFR) and its environs. Using MeerKAT with angular resolution (θ) of 8″ at 1.28 GHz, we identify for the first time, a faint radio continuum emission core in G45.804-0.355. At 1.3 mm, ALMA observations (θ∼0″ 7) resolved the core into multiple dust continuum condensations including MM1 which was found to be the primary massive dust dense core in the region (mass Mc∼ 54.3M⊙). The dust continuum shows an arm-like extended emission within which other dense cores are situated. The velocity gradient of the MM1 core indicates that the source is associated with a rotation gas motion. The red- and blue-shifted lobes overlap at the position of MM1. The compact morphology of the 4.5 μm IR emission, the presence of spiral arms and overlapping of the red- and blue-shifted lobes suggest a face-on geometry of G45.80-40.355.

Maser polarization observations have been successfully used to characterize magnetic fields towards a variety of astrophysical objects. Circular polarization yields the magnetic field strength of the maser source, and linear polarization yields information on the magnetic field morphology. Linear polarization can be produced when the maser saturates or through its anisotropic pumping. We present a comprehensive model of the polarization of masers. In contrast to regular excitation modeling, we relax the assumption of isotropically populated level populations, and model both the total population and level alignments. Through this approach, we obtain quantitative estimates on the anisotropic pumping of a variety of maser sources. In this way, the maser polarization may be related to the gas density, temperature, geometry and the magnetic field. Using the results of our modeling, we discuss, and give predictions, of the polarization of SiO, methanol, and water (mega)masers.

In the last 20 years a small group of 6.7GHz methanol maser sources displaying periodic variability have been identified. This variability is thought to reflect local processes linked to star formation. A number of models have been proposed e.g. colliding wind binary, protostellar pulsation, accretion on binary system. Recent studies of known sources as well as non-periodic flaring masers suggest an episodic accretion as a driving mechanism. We present the results of VLBI observation program aimed at studying known periodic methanol maser sources. High resolution maps of emission, source morphology and evolution in time will be discussed. Those results will help us fully understand the nature of maser periodicity in star forming regions.

Since 2009, the Torun 32 m radio telescope has been used to monitor a sample of ∼140 sources of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission. In 2022, the sample was extended to about 250 targets. Approximately three-quarters show variability greater than 10% on timescales of a few weeks to several years. The most significant results are detecting a few flare events and discovering about a dozen periodic variables with periods ranging from a month to a few years. Here, we present the preliminary analysis of the properties of periodic masers.

Disk-jet systems are common in astrophysical sources of different nature, from black holes to gaseous giant planets. The disk drives the mass accretion onto a central compact object and the jet ejects material along the disk rotation axis. Magnetohydrodynamic disk winds can provide the link between mass accretion and ejection, which is essential to ensure that the excess angular momentum is removed and accretion can proceed. However, up to now, we have been lacking direct observational proof of disk winds. This work presents a direct view of the velocity field of a disk wind around a forming massive star. Achieving a very high spatial resolution of 0.05 au, our water maser observations trace the velocities of individual streamlines emerging from the disk orbiting the forming star. We find that, at low elevation above the disk midplane, the flow co-rotates with its launch point in the disk, in agreement with magneto-centrifugal acceleration. Beyond the co-rotation point, the flow rises spiraling around the disk rotation axis along a helical magnetic field. We have performed (resistive-radiative-gravito-) magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the formation of a massive star and record the development of a magneto-centrifugally launched jet presenting many properties in agreement with our observations.

We report the detections of NH3(3,3) and 25 GHz and 278.3 GHz class I CH3OH maser emission associated with the outflow of the Extended Green Object G19.01–0.03 in sub-arcsecond resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations. For masers associated with the outer outflow lobes (> 12.5 ″ from the central massive young stellar object; MYSO), the spatial distribution of the NH3(3,3) masers is statistically indistinguishable from that of previously known 44 GHz Class I CH3OH masers, strengthening the connection of NH3(3,3) masers to outflow shocks. In sub-arcsecond resolution VLA observations, we resolve the 6.7 GHz Class II CH3OH maser emission towards the MYSO into a partial, inclined ring, with a velocity gradient consistent with the rotationally supported circumstellar disc traced by thermal gas emission.
