The adsorption of Eu3+ from aqueous solution to natural Na+-montmorillonite (Kunipia F), synthetic saponite (Sumecton SA) and synthetic fluoro-tetrasilicic mica (Na+-TSM) clay samples was investigated. Adsorption capacities derived from the isotherms were 1.02, 0.71 and 1.00 meq/g of clay, respectively, for Kunipia F, Sumecton SA and Na+-TSM. The adsorption capacities were comparable to the cation exchange capacities of the clays, which were 1.19, 0.71 and 0.94 meq/g of clay, respectively. The greater slope of the TSM adsorption isotherm relative to the montmorillonite and saponite isotherms indicates a high affinity of Eu3+ for Na+-TSM. The high affinity of TSM for Eu3+ was thought to be related to the large electronegativity of the octahedral fluorine groups in TSM. Photoluminescence of adsorbed Eu3+ was observed for saponite and TSM, but not for montmorillonite. Quenching of Eu3+ luminescence by Fe in the montmorillonite structure is the probable reason for this phenomenon. The luminescence intensity varied with the amount of adsorbed Eu3+ for saponite and TSM as a result of self-quenching.

In order to extend the application of magadiite to optical fields (rather than the usual focus on adsorption, catalysis, ion exchange, etc.), a magadiite-CdS (Mag-CdS) composite was synthesized from Na-magadiite by ion exchange. Various techniques were used to characterize the composite. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the Mag-CdS composite retained the host magadiite structure in spite of decrease in the intensity of the X-ray diffraction peak of the host magadiite. The analytical results confirmed the formation of the Mag-CdS composite, along with the modification of the optical properties of CdS by the host magadiite.

The results of combined single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, Fourier microspectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy study of crystals of turkestanite from the Dara-i-Pioz deposit, Tien-Shan Mountains, Tajikistan are reported. It is a single-layer sheet silicate belonging to the ekanite group with a steacyite structural type. Averaged major-element analysis provided (wt.%): K2O 4.13(6), CaO 8.1(1), Na2O 2.3(1), ThO2 25.8(4), UO2 3.6(4) and SiO2 55.9(1). The averaged crystal-chemical formula for the studied turkestanite is (Th0.84U0.12)Σ0.96(Ca1.24Na0.65)Σ1.89(K0.75☐0.25)Σ1.00Si8O19.72(OH)0.28. Single-crystal structural refinement of turkestanite gave tetragonal, space group P4/mcc, a = 7.5708(3) Å, c = 14.7300(11) Å, V = 844.27(6) Å3 and Z = 2. Luminescence of the uranyl ion (UO2)2+ is observed in turkestanite. In the excitation spectrum, the bands corresponding to a charge transfer transition from the 2p states of the ligand to the 5f state of uranium were found.

The new sodalite-group mineral sapozhnikovite, ideally Na8(Al6Si6O24)(HS)2, was discovered in a hydrothermally altered urtite-like rock at Karnasurt Mountain, Lovozero alkaline massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia. The associated minerals are nepheline, aegirine, potassic feldspar, albite, kyanoxalite, natrolite, fluorapatite, fluorcaphite, lomonosovite (partially or completely altered to murmanite) and loparite-(Ce). Sapozhnikovite forms isolated colourless to pale greyish anhedral equant grains up to 5 mm across. The streak is white and the lustre is vitreous. Strong orange fluorescence under longwave UV radiation (λ = 330 nm) and weak yellow-orange fluorescence under shortwave UV radiation (λ = 245 nm) is observed. Sapozhnikovite is brittle, with a Mohs hardness of 5½. Cleavage is imperfect on (110). Density measured by flotation in heavy liquids is equal to 2.25(1) g⋅cm–3. The calculated density is 2.255 g⋅cm–3. Sapozhnikovite is characterised by infrared, Raman, electron spin resonance, NIR-Vis-UV absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The chemical composition is (wt.%, electron microprobe, H2O determined by gas chromatography of ignition products): Na2O 25.05, Al2O3 32.44, SiO2 37.58, HS 4.33, Cl 2.22, H2O 0.30, –O≡(Cl,HS) –1.55, total 100.37. The empirical formula is Na7.73Al6.08Si5.97O24(HS)1.25Cl0.60⋅0.16H2O. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R1 = 1.62%. Sapozhnikovite is cubic, P$\bar{4}$3n, with a = 8.9146(1) Å, V = 708.45(2) Å3 and Z = 1. The new mineral is isostructural with sodalite. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 6.30 (37) (110), 3.638 (100) (211), 2.821 (14) (310), 2.572 (18) (222), 2.382 (16) (321) and 2.101 (29) (411). The mineral is named in honour of the Russian mineralogist and crystallographer Dr. Anatoly Nikolaevich Sapozhnikov (b. 1946).

Solid solution 0.94Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–6BaTiO3 (NBT–6BT) is considered to be one kind of lead-free piezoelectric materials with excellent electrical properties due to the existence of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). However, its relatively lower depolarization temperature is a long-standing bottleneck for the application of NBT-based piezoelectric ceramics. In this work, the influence of thermal quenching on depolarization temperature and electrical properties of rare-earth Ho-doped NBT–6BT lead-free ceramics was investigated. It was shown that the relative high piezoelectric performance, as well as an improvement of depolarization temperature (Td), can be realized by thermal quenching. The results showed that the quenching process induced high concentration of oxygen vacancy, giving rise to the change of octahedra mode and enhanced lattice distortion, which is benefit to the temperature stability of piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. Furthermore, up-conversion photoluminescence (PL) of Ho-doped NBT–6BT could be effectively tuned by the introduction of oxygen vacancy, suggesting a promising potential in optical–electrical multifunctional devices.

The structural, vibrational, and optoelectronic properties of sol–gel synthesized Zn1−x(Al0.5Si0.5)xO nanoparticles were investigated. The X-ray diffraction studies of the samples confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite phase with the space group P63mc. No significant changes were observed in the lattice parameters. The increase in the intensity of $E_{{\rm{high}}}^2$ Raman mode observed at 438 cm−1 indicates a decrease in the crystallite size. The reduction in the deep-level emission band with the introduction of Al/Si indicates a decrease in intrinsic defects for the codoped sample. A unique electron paramagnetic resonance signal at g= 1.96 follows the same trend as the green luminescence, and its evolution was shown to probe the oxygen vacancy concentrations. I–V characteristics curve confirm the increase in the conductivity for the codoped samples. To evaluate the role of surface defects, ultraviolet photoresponse behavior as a function of time was also studied, and an increase in the photocurrent was observed. The slow decay and rise in the photocurrent are because of multiple trapping by interstitial defects. A relatively faster response time was observed with the substitution of Al/Si. It has been observed that prepared nanomaterials are suitable for optoelectronic devices.

Materials that show superior light-emitting and catalytic properties are in high demand among the scientific community owing to their applications in the areas of optoelectronics and (opto)electrocatalysis. In this work, we have synthesized sub-10-nm Pr2Sn2O7 (PSO) and Pr2Sn2O7:Bi3+ (PSOB) nanoparticles (NPs) and investigated their optical and electrochemical properties. On ultraviolet irradiation, PSO NPs display blue emission because of the presence of oxygen vacancies. Interestingly, PSOB NPs have higher blue emission intensity than undoped PSO NPs owing to the increase in oxygen vacancy defect density induced by Bi3+ doping. Moreover, PSOB NPs display higher efficiency in terms of current density than PSO NPs as a catalyst toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The kinetic OER models of PSO and PSOB NPs are quite different as displayed by their different Tafel slopes. Interestingly and as another advantage, the PSOB sample is more conducting with low impedance value than the PSO counterpart. With all these advantages due to high oxygen vacancies induced by Bi3+ doping, PSOB NPs have a great potential to be used as blue phosphors, charge storage devices, and capacitors.

The present work investigates the influence of sodium doping on structural, morphological, photoluminescence, linear, nonlinear (NL), and optical limiting (OL) parameters of NaxCd1−xS thin films (where x= 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 wt%) deposited on glass substrates using spray pyrolysis route. X-ray diffraction and Raman analyses confirmed the hexagonal polycrystalline nature of films. Crystallite sizes were decreased from 30 to 17 nm with doping. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs also confirmed the nanocrystalline spherical growth. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and SEM mapping studies revealed the presence and homogeneous distribution of individual elements. Transmission of films is found to lie between 45 and 60%. Although the low doping caused the reduction of the effective band gap, higher doping caused a blue shift in band gap, with an associated reduction in crystallite sizes. The refractive index values are found within 1–2 in visible and their maximum values (in range 2.65–3.16) are observed at 2500 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed broad emission peak at ∼520 ± 10 nm. Dielectric and NL analyses were also carried out. OL results were promising for the systematic gradual decrease of intensity from 100 to 72%, with doping for power regulating applications.

In this work, strongly blue emitting Ce3+-activated BaAl2O4 nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by a sol–gel technique. The crystal structure, morphology, and microstructure of the nanophosphors have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The photoluminescence spectra show the impact of concentration variation of Ce3+ on the photoluminescence emission of the phosphor. These nanophosphors display intense blue emission peaking at 422 nm generated by the Ce3+ 5d → 4f transition under 350 nm excitation. Our results reveal that this nanophosphor has the capability to take part in the emergent domain of solid-state lighting and field-emission display devices.

Composites based on ZnS nanparticles embedded in layered magadiite were synthesized via a three step process : protonation of Na-magadiite, ion exchange in order to introduce Zn(NH3)42+ in the interlayer space, and addition of Na2S to form ZnS particles in the interlayer space of magadiite. The composites obtained were characterized by X-ray power diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminscence spectra (PL), and UV-visible transmission spectra (UV-vis). Results indicated that ZnS nanoparticles embedded in magadiite presented different optical properties and photoluminescence enhancement properties compared with those of uncovered ZnS particles (without host magadiite).

The intercalation of Tb(III) into layered magadiite is achieved by three-step ion exchanges with H+/Na+, TBA+ (tetra-n-butylammonium ions)/H+ and Tb(EDTA)3+/TBA+. Various techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and photoluminescent spectroscopy (PL), were employed to characterize the Tb-intercalated magadiites. The XRD results revealed that the basal spacing of the Tb-intercalated magadiites was obviously larger than that of the Na-magadiite, confirming the intercalation. The IR spectra showed no bands attributable to EDTA in the Tb-intercalated magadiites, indicating that the EDTA has broken away from Tb(III)-ETDA complexes during ion exchange. Moreover, the basal spacing of Tb-intercalated magadiite tends to increase slightly with the increase in water content in the Tb-intercalated magadiite. The PL spectra show weak emissions, attributed to 5D4-7FJ (J = 3, 4, 5, 6) transitions of Tb3+.

Laser-produced copper plasma in the presence of variable transverse external magnetic field in air is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As the magnetic field increases from 0 to 0.5 T, the intensity of Cu I lines initially increases and then decreases slightly at a 0.5 T. The maximum intensity enhancement of all five Cu I lines occurs at a magnetic field of 0.3 T. The increase in intensity is attributed to an increase in the electron impact excitation of Cu. With increase in magnetic field, the electron density and temperature were found to increase due to increase in the confinement of plasma. The difference in intensity enhancement factor is due to the difference in excitation rate coefficients. The surface morphology of irradiated copper target is also analyzed at 0.3 T magnetic field at which the density is maximum and reveals the formation of Cu/Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles (NPs). More NPs are formed at the peripheral region than at the central region of the ablated crater and is due to the oxidation of Cu atom in the plasma–ambient interface. The larger grain size of nanostructures in the presence of magnetic field is due to an increase in the inverse pulsed laser deposition. The intensity of Raman peak of Cu2O decreases in the presence of magnetic field and that of CuO increases which is more likely due to conversion of Cu2O to CuO. The photoluminescence intensity of CuO increases in the presence of magnetic field due to the phase transformation of Cu2O to CuO in agreement with the result of Raman spectroscopy.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the effects of pressure on polymer chain alignments in poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) blends that are used in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). The P3HT:PCBM blends on glass were subjected to pressure and annealing at 140 °C. The surface morphologies, nano-/micro-structures and the chain alignments were analyzed using atomic force microscopy techniques and grazing incidence x-ray scattering. The current–voltage characteristics of the resulting devices are also shown to change significantly with changes in the nano-/micro-structures. The polymer chains were aligned in the direction of the applied pressure (edge-on), which reduced the lamellae spacing between the polymer units and increased the degree of crystallinity. The increased crystallinity plays significant role in the current–voltage enhancements. The implications of the study are discussed for the design and control of the nano/microstructures of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells.

In this study low temperature micro-photoluminescence technology was employed to investigate effects of the irradiation and nitrogen concentration on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) luminescence, with the photochromic and vibronic properties of the NV defects. Results showed that the NV luminescence was weakened due to recombination of self-interstitials created by electron irradiation in diamond and the vacancies within the structure of NV centers. For very pure diamond, the vacancies migrated the long distance to get trapped by N atoms only after sufficient high temperature annealing. As with the increase in nitrogen content, the migration distance of vacancies got smaller. The nitrogen also favored the formation of negatively charged NV centers with the donating electrons. Under the high-energy ultraviolet laser excitation, the photochromic property of the NV− center was also observed, though it was not stable. Besides, the NV centers showed very strong broad sidebands, and the vibrations involved one phonon with energy of ~42 meV and another with ~67 meV energy.

ZrO2:Eu3+ hollow spheres were successfully fabricated with the resin microspheres as the template. The sample characterizations were carried out by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence spectra. XRD results revealed that Eu3+-doped samples were pure t-ZrO2 phase after being calcined at 873 K. SEM results exhibited that this Eu3+ doped ZrO2 was hollow spheres; the diameter and thickness of which were about 450 and 50 nm, respectively. Upon excitation at 394 nm, the orange-red emission bands at the wave length longer than 570 nm were from 5D0 → 7FJ (J = 1, 2) transitions. The asymmetry ratio of (5D0 → 7F2)/(5D0 → 7F1) intensity is about 1.61, 1.26, 1.42, 1.42, 1.40, and 1.38 for the Eu3+ concentration 0.4, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mol%, respectively. These values suggest that the asymmetry ratio of Eu3+ ions is independent of the doping concentration. The optimal doping concentration of Eu3+ ions in ZrO2 is 1.5 mol%. According to Dexter's theory, the critical distance between Eu3+ ions for energy transfer was determined to be 16 Å.

We investigate the structural evolution of Er/Si nanoclusters obtained in co-implanted fused silica upon annealing via Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The effect of annealing temperature (900–1200 °C) on the nature and the relative fraction of the formed amorphous-Si, Si nanocrystals (Si-nc), and amorphous Er nanoparticles (Er-np) was determined in this ternary Er–Si–O system, showing a change of growth regime above 1100 °C due to the formation of mixed Er/O/Si aggregates. We observe that the nucleation and growth of amorphous Er-np and Si-nc are mutually affected. The 2-fold increase in the size of Er-np when no excess Si+ is present in the matrix indicates that the formation of Si-nc in the proximity of Er clusters hinders Er diffusivity above 1100 °C. This finding shows the importance of nanoclustering for improving the thermal stability of Er-doped silica systems.

The present work reports a simple and easy wet chemistry synthesis of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanospheres at room temperature without surfactants and using different precursors. Structural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with focused ion beam and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The optical band gaps were determined from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photoluminescence behavior of the as-synthesized nanospheres showed significant differences depending on the precursors used. The Cu2O nanospheres were constituted by aggregates of nanocrystals, in which an on/off emission behavior of each individual nanocrystal was identified during transmission electron microscopy observations. The thermal behavior of the Cu2O nanospheres was investigated with in situ X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Remarkable structural differences were observed for the nanospheres annealed in air, which turned into hollow spherical structures surrounded by outsized nanocrystals.

To selectively detect Cu2+ ions is very important for controlling daily intake of Cu2+ ions and monitoring numerous biological processes. Fluorescence spectroscopic technique is a useful one for detection of copper ions. Previous methods always involve the use of metal Cd-based quantum dots (QDs), which suffer to the photobleaching and subsequent release of toxic metal ions. Herein, a simple method has been developed to detect Cu2+ ions by using pristine graphene QDs. Graphene QDs are synthesized by chemical oxidation of pitch graphite fibers. Our results indicate the photoluminescence (PL) of as-synthesized graphene QDs could be quenched by a group of metal ions while adding biothiol cysteine can only cause the significant recovery of the PL of graphene QDs quenched by Cu2+ ions. Our approach provides an easy and environmental friendly method for detection of Cu2+ ions and has the potential for future practical applications.

The surface properties of hydroxyapatite, including electric charge, can influence the biological response, tissue compatibility, and adhesion of biological cells and biomolecules. Results reported here help in understanding this influence by creating charged domains on hydroxyapatite thin films deposited on silicon using electron beam irradiation and investigating their shape, properties, and carbon contamination for different doses of incident injected charge by two methods. Photoluminescence laser scanning microscopy was used to image electrostatic charge trapped at pre-existing and irradiation-induced defects within these domains, while phase imaging in atomic force microscopy was used to image the carbon contamination. Scanning Auger electron spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy were used as a reference for the atomic force microscopy phase contrast and photoluminescence laser scanning microscopy measurements. Our experiment shows that by combining the two imaging techniques the effects of trapped charge and carbon contamination can be separated. Such separation yields new possibilities for advancing the current understanding of how surface charge influences mediation of cellular and protein interactions in biomaterials.

Doping of a heteroatom such as nitrogen in carbon nanomaterials provides a means to tailor their electronic properties and chemical reactivities. In this article, we present simple methods to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with high nitrogen doping content (18–22%), involving the reaction of glucose in the presence of urea under hydrothermal conditions or by microwave irradiation. The N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) show high aqueous solubility and tunable photoluminescence (PL). Interaction of N-CQDs with exfoliated graphene or dimethylaniline quenches PL. Interaction of N-doped as well as undoped C-dots with electron-donating tetrathiafulvalene and electron-withdrawing tetracyanoethylene has been examined. The intense blue PL of CQDs has been exploited to produce white light by mixing the CQDs with yellow light emitting ZnO nanoparticles or graphene oxide. The N-doped CQDs exhibit superior photocatalytic activity compared to pristine CQDs.
