1. Energy costs of eating were determined from the increased rates of oxygen uptake by five steers aged 18 to 20 months and weighing 298 to 407 kg.

2. Five diets were tested: pelleted concentrate (500 g barley grain per kg, 400 g lucerne meal per kg, 90 g soya bean meal per kg, and 10 g NaCl, trace mineral and vitamin supplement per kg); pelleted lucerne; lucerne hay; chopped-grass hay (700 g brome per kg, 300 g fescue per kg); and chopped fresh turnips. The dry-matter concentration of the pellets and hays was approximately 900 g per kg while the turnips contained only 140 g per kg.

3. The rates of ingestion differed markedly between diets during the (15 to 50 min) twice-daily (morning and evening) feeding periods. On a dry-matter basis, the pellets were consumed most rapidly at a rate of 130 to 138 g per min, while the hays were consumed at approximately 38 g per min and the turnips at 30 g per min.

4. The energy costs per min spent eating were similar for all rations (27·6 to 35·6 J/ kg live weight). However, because of different rates of ingestion, the energy costs per kg DM ingested were different: 222 to 238 J/kg live weight for the pelleted foods, 1029 J/kg live weight for the hays and 1427 J/kg live weight for the turnips.

5. The energy cost of eating is more a function of time spent eating than a function of the amount of food ingested. Thus, rate of ingestion and duration of the meal are key factors in determining the energy cost of eating in cattle.

High intakes of dietary protein, particularly rumen degradable protein (RDP), lead to elevations in systemic concentrations of ammonia and (or) urea and these may be increased further if associated with inadequate fermentable energy intake. High systemic concentrations of ammonia and urea have been associated with reduced reproductive performance in cattle. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of RDP and fermentable energy intake on a range of blood metabolites and on embryo survival in heifers. Oestrous synchronized, nulliparous beef heifers (no. = 162) were randomly assigned in a 2 ✕ 2 factorial designed experiment to two levels of RDP and two levels of fermentable energy. Grass silage-based diets were supplemented with either 0 (0U) or 240 (240U) g dietary urea (460 g/kg N) and these in turn with either 0 (0P) or 3 (3P) kg dry matter of molassed sugar-beet pulp pellets (MSBP) per day. The four treatments were, therefore, (1) 0U + 0P (no. = 43), (2) 0U + 3P (no. = 44), (3) 240U + 0P (no. = 40) (4) 240U + 3P (no. = 35), respectively. Systemic concentrations of ammonia, urea, insulin, glucose and progesterone were measured. Heifers were given artificial insemination (AI) and embryo survival measured by ultrasonography at 30 and again at 40 days after AI. Systemic ammonia and urea were elevated (P < 0·001) in the animals given the high RDP diets. Supplementation with MSBP reduced systemic urea in the heifers on both high and low RDP diets. Plasma ammonia concentrations were not affected by MSBP supplementation (P > 0·05). Plasma glucose was not affected by urea or MSBP treatment (P > 0·05) but was affected by day and time of sampling (P > 0·05). Plasma concentration of insulin was not affected by urea or MSBP supplementation or by day or time of sampling (P > 0·05). Plasma concentration of progesterone was not affected by diet or time of sampling (P > 0·05). The overall embryo survival rate was 62% and was not affected by dietary urea or fermentable carbohydrate or by systemic concentrations of ammonia, urea, glucose, insulin or progesterone (P > 0·05).

An experiment was designed to test whether pigs can differentiate between two foods differing in their protein content. A control food (160 g protein per kg food) and six choice-feeding treatments, in which the diets differed only in their protein concentrations, were used in the experiment. Pigs were given the following choices of protein: 220 v. 180; 220 v. 140; 220 v. 100; 180 v. 140; 180 v. 100 and 140 v. 100 g protein per kg food. Group data were collected on 240 Landrace × Large White pigs during the growing phase (30 to 90 kg), all pigs used being of similar genetic background. A 2 × 7 factorial design was replicated twice, with 10 pigs per pen, and with barrows and gilts being penned separately. Food bins for the choice-feeding treatments were placed side-by-side and an 8-day training period, in which the pigs were allowed access to only one of the two foods on alternate days, was used at the beginning of the trial to allow them to learn the position, taste and physiological effect of each of the two foods. All pigs were weighed weekly, as was the amount of food consumed in each pen. The conclusion reached was that growing pigs were able to differentiate successfully between two foods on the basis of their protein content and to change the selected diet to match their changing requirement for dietary protein. As a result, there was a significant reduction in food intake (P < 0·001) and in the P2 backfat thickness (P < 0·01) and the food conversion ratio was significantly improved (P < 0·001) compared with the control treatment.

Three groups of six young male pigs (boars) were reared from 20 days to 7 mo of age under one of the following social conditions: a mixed sex group; an all-male group; or social restriction, without physical and visual contact with other pigs. The sexual behaviour of the boars was studied from 7 to 13 mo of age. The total number of copulations and the sum of all the courting behaviour activities were significantly greater (P<0·01) for the boars reared in the all-male and the mixed sex groups than for those reared in social restriction. Growth rate to 30 weeks of age, testicle size and semen quality were not affected by rearing treatment.

A deterministic model was developed to examine the optimization of open nucleus breeding schemes in order to maximize the rate of genetic response in dairy cattle. By changing the parameters, the model was able to simulate both a closed nucleus and a progeny testing scheme. The model implicitly optimized the generation interval and the selection across tiers by means of truncation across age classes and tiers respectively. The effects of size of the progeny test group and the nucleus size were assessed by comparing alternative plans. It is possible to optimize a breeding plan given the reproduction rates of the animals, the availability of different sources of information, the age distribution of the animals (survival rates) and the phenotypic and genetic parameters of the trait.

The steady state selection response was assessed by calculating the genetic progress year after year until it stabilized. The genetic gain was corrected for the effects of reduced variances due to previous selections and increased variances due to genetic differences between parental age classes.

In an example, the model was used to predict the improvement in milk yield in a closed artificial insemination breeding scheme. The genetic gain of a conventional progeny testing scheme was about one-third lower than the genetic gain of the optimized breeding plan. The variance reduction due to selection decreased the steady state genetic gain by a factor 0·3

Using internet-based software known as 1000Minds, choice-experiment surveys were administered to experts and farmers from the Irish sheep industry to capture their preferences with respect to the relative importance – represented by part-worth utilities – of target traits in the definition of a breeding objective for sheep in Ireland. Sheep production in Ireland can be broadly separated into lowland and hill farming systems; therefore, each expert was asked to answer the survey first as if he or she were a lowland farmer and second as a hill farmer. In addition to the experts, a group of lowland and a group of hill farmers were surveyed to assess whether, and to what extent, the groups’ preferences differ from the experts’ preferences. The part-worth utilities obtained from the surveys were converted into relative economic value terms per unit change in each trait. These measures – referred to as ‘preference economic values’ (pEVs) – were compared with economic values for the traits obtained from bio-economic models. The traits ‘value per lamb at the meat processor’ and ‘lamb survival to slaughter’ were revealed as being the two most important traits for the surveyed experts responding as lowland and hill farmers, respectively. In contrast, ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’ and ‘number of anthelmintic treatments per year for ewes’ were the two least important traits. With the exception of ‘carcase fat class’ (P < 0.05), there were no statistically significant differences in the mean pEVs obtained from the surveyed experts under both the lowland and hill farming scenarios. Compared with the economic values obtained from bio-economic models, the pEVs for ‘lambing difficulty’ when the experts responded as lowland farmers were higher (P < 0.001); and they were lower (P < 0.001) for ‘carcase conformation class’, ‘carcase fat class’ (less negative) and ‘ewe mature weight’ (less negative) under both scenarios. Compared with surveyed experts, pEVs from lowland farmers differed significantly for ‘lambing difficulty’, ‘lamb survival to slaughter’, ‘average days to slaughter of lambs’, ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’, ‘number of anthelmintic treatments per year for ewes’ and ‘ewe mature weight’. Compared with surveyed experts, pEVs from hill farmers differed significantly for ‘lambing difficulty’, ‘average days to slaughter of lambs’ and ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’. This study indicates that preference-based tools have the potential to contribute to the definition of breeding objectives where production and price data are not available.

Seventy-four New Zealand ✕ Californian females were used to determine the influence of dietary energy source on the performance and perirenal fat thickness (PFT) change measured by ultrasound of primiparous rabbit does. Three highly concentrated diets were designed with different dietary energy sources: animal fat (diet F), vegetable oil (diet O) and cereal starch (diet S), and does were fertilized by artificial insemination after parturition (AP group) or around weaning (AW group), litters being weaned at 28 days of age. There were no significant differences in live weight and food intake of females throughout gestation, but does given diet S showed a higher increase in their PFT until 28th day than those given diets F and O (P < 0·01), although all females had a similar PFT at parturition. Rabbit does given diets S and O showed a significantly higher dietary energy intake than those given diet F (P < 0·01) during the first weeks of lactation, and similar thereafter until the second parturition. Milk yield and litter weight gain were significantly higher with fat-enriched diets (P < 0·05), and milk composition of rabbit does given diet F showed a higher total solids content (P = 0·01), fat (P < 0·001) and energy (P < 0·01) than milk of does receiving diets O or S. Although pups on fat diets showed a higher weaning weight (P < 0·05), dietary treatment during lactation did not have any effect on the performance of pups during the subsequent growing period. PFT always decreased during lactation for does given fat-enriched diets, while it increased for does given diet S and fertilized after parturition. Live weight of AP does was significantly higher at 21st day of lactation (P < 0·01) and at weaning (P < 0·001), and they showed a significantly lower food intake during the final week of lactation. The period from weaning to parturition was too short for AP does, which showed a decrease of their PFT, while AW does showed an increase of their PFT and a greater number of pups alive at birth (P < 0·05). Due to the lower milk yield of rabbit does fertilized AP, their pups showed a significantly higher solid food intake (P < 0·001), resulting in a similar value for the live weight of pups in both groups at weaning. The earlier promotion of solid food intake significantly affected the food intake of litters during the subsequent growing period, presenting higher values for pups coming from AP does. In conclusion, the addition of dietary fat, especially from animal origin, seems to improve the utilization of energy for milk production, while the use of a high level of starch could decrease the negative balance of primiparous rabbit does during lactation.

The objective of this study was to compare carcass and meat quality between Barbarine lambs raised on rangelands and those reared indoors. A total of 24 weaned male lambs (23.2 kg) were allotted into two groups. The first group (GS) grazed pasture dominated by natural shrubs and was supplemented with 100 g of concentrate. The second group (HS) received oat hay and 200 to 300 g supplement of the same concentrate in order to obtain the same average daily gain (ADG) as the GS group. Six lambs from each group were slaughtered. Lambs to be slaughtered were randomly identified at the beginning of the trial. Carcass traits (offals percentage, dressing percentage, cuts yield, tissue composition, fatness and conformation) were determined; pH and meat and fat color were measured. Samples from longissimus lumborum were collected to analyze fatty acid composition. The GS group was characterized by a higher offals percentage, associated with higher lungs, heart, liver and kidney percentage. Carcass dressing percentage defined as the rate between hot carcass weight and empty BW was lower by 3.4% in the GS group. No differences were observed for carcass meat yield and carcass and leg compactness. Shoulder bone percentage of the GS group was higher, without differences in fat and lean percentages. Fat thickness, kidney and tail fats were lower in the GS lambs. However, intramuscular fat content was not affected. Percentages of saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were not modified, whereas levels of n-3 and long n-3PUFA (EPA, DPA and DHA) as well as Δ5 desaturase plus Δ6 desaturase index were higher for the GS group. Thrombogenic and atherogenic indexes were not altered. No significant effects were observed for meat pH, meat and fat color. Despite having the same ADG, lambs from the GS group were less fatty, and their meat was richer in beneficial fatty acids.

The increase in the worldwide demand for dairy products, associated with global warming, will emphasize the issue of water use efficiency in dairy systems. The evaluation of environmental issues related to the management of animal dejections will also require precise biotechnical models that can predict effluent management in farms. In this study, equations were developed and evaluated for predicting the main water flows at the dairy cow level, based on parameters related to cow productive performance and diet under thermoneutral conditions. Two datasets were gathered. The first one comprised 342 individual measurements of water balance in dairy cows obtained during 18 trials at the experimental farm of Méjussaume (INRA, France). Predictive equations of water intake, urine and fecal water excretion were developed by multiple regression using a stepwise selection of regressors from a list of seven candidate parameters, which were milk yield, dry matter intake (DMI), body weight, diet dry matter content (DM), proportion of concentrate (CONC) and content of crude protein (CP) ingested with forage and concentrate (CPf and CPc, g/kg DM). The second dataset was used for external validation of the developed equations and comprised 196 water flow measurements on experimental lots obtained from 43 published papers related to water balance or digestibility measurements in dairy cows. Although DMI was the first predictor of the total water intake (TWI), with a partial r2 of 0.51, DM was the first predictive parameter of free water intake (FWI), with a partial r2 of 0.57, likely due to the large variability of DM in the first dataset (from 11.5 to 91.4 g/100 g). This confirmed the compensation between water drunk and ingested with diet when DM changes. The variability of urine volume was explained mainly by the CPf associated with DMI (r.s.d. 5.4 kg/day for an average flow of 24.0 kg/day) and that of fecal water was explained by the proportion of CONC in the diet and DMI. External validation showed that predictive equations excluding DMI as predictive parameters could be used for FWI, urine and fecal water predictions if cows were fed a well-known total mixed ration. It also appeared that TWI and FWI were underestimated when ambient temperature increased above 25°C and possible means of including climatic parameters in future predictive equations were proposed.

The presence of DNA fragments in blood and milk from goats fed conventional (control) or Roundup Ready® soybean meal solvent extracted (s.e.; treated) was investigated by using a polymerase chain reaction approach. The same investigation was carried out on blood, skeletal muscle and organs from kids of both groups fed only dams’ milk until weaning. Moreover, the possible effects on cell metabolism were evaluated by determination of several specific enzymes in serum, heart, skeletal muscle, liver and kidney. Fragments of the multicopy chloroplast (trnL) gene were found in blood and milk samples from goats of both groups. In kids, the chloroplast fragments were found in samples of both groups. In samples, which proved positive for the presence of chloroplast DNA, fragments of the specific soybean single copy gene (lectin) were detected in several blood and milk samples. The same fragment was also found in control and treated groups of kids. Transgenic fragments were not found in those samples, which were found positive for chloroplast fragments of control groups of either goats or kids. On the contrary, in blood and milk of treated goats, fragments both of the 35S promoter and the CP4 epsps gene were detected. These fragments were also found in treated kids with a significant detection of the 35S promoter in liver, kidney and blood, and of the CP4 epsps gene fragment in liver, kidney, heart and muscle. A significant increase in lactic dehydrogenase, mainly concerning the lactic dehydrogenase-1 isoenzyme was found in heart, skeletal muscle and kidney of treated kids, thus suggesting a change in the local production of the enzyme. Finally, no significant differences were detected concerning kid body and organ weight.

Carcass and meat quality characteristics for 2408 cryptorchid and female lambs at mean carcass weights of 24·8 kg and 19·3 kg respectively are reported. The lambs were sired by a selection of Poll Dorset (D; no. = 7), Texel (T; no. = 10), Border Leicester (BL; no. =12) and Merino (M; no. =12) rams and born to Border Leicester × Merino (BLM) and Merino (M) dams. The lambs comprised six genotypes (D×BLM, T×BLM, D×M, T×M, BL×M and M×M) that represent the range of types (second cross, first cross and Merino) produced in the Australian lamb industry. The second cross (D×BLM, T×BLM) and first cross BL×M were fatter than first cross (D×M, T×M) (1 mm at the GR site) and M×M (3 mm GR) carcasses at the same hot carcass weight (P < 0·01). D cross were leaner than T cross for 24 kg cryptorchid carcasses at the С site (P < 0·01) but there was no difference at the GR site or f or 19 kg female carcasses at either site. There was no difference in M. longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LL) area of first cross and second cross carcasses sired by D and T rams, which were proportionately 0·04 greater than M×M and 0·09 greater than BL×M. The LL area was proportionately 0·04 greater for T than D crosses (P < 0·01). M×M had 0·02 lower dressing yield than other crosses (P < 0·01).

There was a significant genotype effect for LL ultimate pH (P < 0·01). BL×M and M×M had higher mean pH and more carcasses than the other genotypes with pH greater than the critical value of 5·8 for meat quality. There were no significant differences between the genotypes for chromameter measures of meat colour. Implications for the production and processing sectors of the lamb industry are discussed.

The aims of this study were to assess genetic variances, trends and mode of inheritance for hip and elbow dysplasia in Finnish dog populations. The influence of time-dependent fixed effects in the model when estimating the genetic trends was also studied. Official hip and elbow dysplasia screening records of 42 421 dogs from seven breeds were analysed with REML. To investigate the mode of inheritance of hip and elbow dysplasia, trait distributions, genetic variances and regressions of offspring phenotypes on parental predicted breeding values were studied separately in males and in females. Genetic trends for hip dysplasia between the years 1983 and 1998 were favourable only in the Rottweiler. In elbow dysplasia, the trends were favourable after the year 1992 in all the four breeds studied but the overall changes were small. The reason for this seemed to be negligible selection pressure against these traits. Time-dependent fixed effects in the model had an influence on the estimated genetic trends, resulting either in a more negative or more positive genetic trend compared with the model from which the time-dependent effects were removed. Mitochondrial or sex-linked inheritance did not seem likely in the expression of hip and elbow dysplasia in the populations studied. Regression coefficients of offspring phenotypes on estimated parental breeding values were approximately equal to their expected value in a situation with equal parental contribution. Furthermore, the phenotypic frequency distributions of hip and elbow dysplasia grades were similar among males and females in each breed studied. No indication of major genes was found in the offspring frequency distributions within individual sires. According to these Finnish data, mode of inheritance for both hip and elbow dysplasia is polygenic (quantitative) with equal expression of the genes from both parents, although the estimates of heritability for hip dysplasia in the Rough Collie and for elbow dysplasia in the German Shepherd and the Golden Retriever were somewhat different in males compared with females.

Progesterone concentration was measured in milk samples collected twice or three times weekly from 157 suckling beef cows in three herds during the period from parturition until the resumption of ovarian cycles. The length of the post partum acyclic period varied between cows from 11 to 125 days. The length of the acyclic period did not differ between cows suckling one or two calves or between the two breeds of cow studied. There were significant negative correlations between the length of the acyclic period and 1. body weight at calving (r = −0·394; P<0·001) and 2. days from calving to the next longest day of the year (r=−0·782; P<0·001). Cows calving between February and April were acyclic significantly longer (83 days) than those calving between August and December (44 days; s.e. of difference = 3·5; P < 0·001). In one herd there was a significant negative correlation between the length of the acyclic period and order of calving both in spring (r=−0·379; P<0·05)- and autumn/winter (r=− 0·349; P < 0·05)-calving cows. Of the 40 spring-calving cows in the same herd, 17 were served naturally prior to any rise in milk progesterone concentrations and 11 of these conceived to this service.

Iodine and selenium are essential trace elements involved in the regulation of thyroid metabolism and antioxidant status. Two experiments were undertaken on lactating cows to determine the milk concentrations of iodine and selenium, carry over (CO) in milk, the fraction in curdle portion and how milk yield affects the milk iodine and selenium concentrations and CO. Sources of elements were potassium iodide and sodium selenite. In Experiment 1, 12 cows were randomly allotted to three diet groups in a completely randomized design: control group (CTR) – total mixed ration (TMR) containing 1.71 and 0.08 mg/kg dry matter (DM); Group 1 (T1) – TMR plus 23.8 and 2.2 mg; Group 2 (T2) – TMR plus 45.5 and 4.3 mg, respectively, for iodine and selenium. In Experiment 2, 30 cows were allotted to three groups according to milk yield: high (H), average (A) and low (L). Within each group, cows were randomly assigned two levels of iodine and selenium: Level 1: TMR containing 1.55 and 0.15 mg/kg DM; Level 2: TMR plus 47.2 mg and 8.0 mg, respectively, iodine and selenium. In both experiments, individual milk samples were collected and analyzed for iodine and selenium contents. In Experiment 1, Grana Padano cheese was obtained at lab scale and the iodine and selenium fractions in the curd were measured. In Experiment 1, the iodine intake increased (P < 0.001) the concentration and total excretion in milk. The CO increased (P < 0.05) from 16 (CTR) to 27 (T1) and 26% (T2); the sampling time was significant (P < 0.05) with no interaction with treatments. Concentration of selenium in milk was increased (P < 0.05) by treatment and CO decreased (P < 0.01) from 26 (CTR) to 12 (T1) and 9% (T2). The iodine showed a mild enrichment factor in the curdle (about 1.7-fold), whereas selenium enriched five- to sevenfold. In Experiment 2, the level of iodine supplementation affected (P < 0.05) the concentration and total excretion in milk. No effects on milk iodine concentration were related to milk yield or milk yield × treatment interaction; however, the iodine excretion in milk was major (P < 0.05) in higher yielding groups. The iodine CO was affected (P < 0.05) by the milk yield in supplemented groups. The selenium milk concentration and excretion were affected (P < 0.01) by the milk yield, whereas the CO was affected (P < 0.05) by the milk yield and selenium supplementation. Results highlight the possibility of fortification with iodine in milk and selenium in cheese through animal feeding.

Milk production is an important economic and social activity in Brazil. Failure to meet institutional and market demands for quality and sustainability has led farmers, particularly small-scale farmers, to leave agriculture. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the sustainability of dairy farms in Paraná, Brazil. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 75 dairy farm operators. Sustainability indicators were generated on the basis of economic, environmental and social data using exploratory factor analysis. Factor scores were subjected to hierarchical clustering, which resulted in the formation of three groups of dairy farms. Groups 1, 2 and 3 had high, intermediate and low levels of sustainability, respectively. Group 1 comprised large-scale dairy farms with high productivity. Dairy farms with intermediate sustainability (group 2) had medium production capacity, and farms with low sustainability (group 1) had the smallest production scale and capacity. Large-scale dairy farms have greater economic, environmental and social sustainability and are, therefore, more likely to survive in the medium and long term.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of three cultivars (Promore, Kiev mutant and Ultra) of white lupins (Lupinus albus L.) for broilers. In experiment 1, the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) and ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients of the three cultivars were determined. The cultivar effects were significant (P < 0.05) for AME, but the ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients were similar (P > 0.05) between cultivars. The AME value of Ultra cultivar was lower (P < 0.05) than those of Promore and Kiev mutant cultivars. In Experiment 2, using the AME and ileal digestible amino acid values determined in Experiment 1, diets containing 200 g/kg of lupin were formulated and the effects of feeding these diets on performance, digestive tract development and excreta quality of broiler starters were investigated. Weight gain, feed intake and feed per gain of broilers fed diets containing white lupins were similar (P > 0.05) to those fed the maize–soybean meal diet. The performance of birds fed diets containing different cultivars of white lupins was similar (P > 0.05). Several digestive tract parameters were influenced by the dietary inclusion of white lupins. In particular, the relative liver weight and the relative empty weights of small intestine and caeca in birds fed diets containing white lupins were higher (P < 0.05) than those fed the maize–soybean meal diet. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the excreta quality scores between the birds fed the maize–soybean meal diet and those fed diets containing white lupins.

The adaptation of dairy cows to methane (CH4)-mitigating feed additives was evaluated using the in vitro gas production (GP) technique. Nine rumen-fistulated lactating Holstein cows were grouped into three blocks and within blocks randomly assigned to one of three experimental diets: Control (CON; no feed additive), Agolin Ruminant® (AR; 0.05 g/kg dry matter (DM)) or lauric acid (LA; 30 g/kg DM). Total mixed rations composed of maize silage, grass silage and concentrate were fed in a 40 : 30 : 30 ratio on DM basis. Rumen fluid was collected from each cow at days −4, 1, 4, 8, 15 and 22 relative to the introduction of the additives in the diets. On each of these days, a 48-h GP experiment was performed in which rumen fluid from each individual donor cow was incubated with each of the three substrates that reflected the treatment diets offered to the cows. DM intake was on average 19.8, 20.1 and 16.2 kg/day with an average fat- and protein-corrected milk production of 30.7, 31.7 and 26.2 kg/day with diet CON, AR and LA, respectively. In general, feed additives in the donor cow diet had a larger effect on gas and CH4 production than the same additives in the incubation substrate. Incubation substrate affected asymptotic GP, half-time of asymptotic CH4 production, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration, molar proportions of propionate and butyrate and degradation of organic matter (OMD), but did not affect CH4 production. No substrate×day interactions were observed. A significant diet×day interaction was observed for in vitro gas and CH4 production, total VFA concentration, molar proportions of VFA and OMD. From day 4 onwards, the LA diet persistently reduced gas and CH4 production, total VFA concentration, acetate molar proportion and OMD, and increased propionate molar proportion. In vitro CH4 production was reduced by the AR diet on day 8, but not on days 15 and 22. In line with these findings, the molar proportion of propionate in fermentation fluid was greater, and that of acetate smaller, for the AR diet than for the CON diet on day 8, but not on days 15 and 22. Overall, the data indicate a short-term effect of AR on CH4 production, whereas the CH4-mitigating effect of LA persisted.

Housing conditions for horses impose various levels of confinement, which may compromise welfare. Lying behaviour and activity can be used as welfare indicators for domestic animals and rebound behaviour suggests a build-up of motivation resulting from deprivation. The objective of this study was to determine if activity and lying behaviour of horses are affected by housing conditions and to investigate the occurrence of rebound behaviour after release from confinement. Eight horses were subjected, in pairs, to each of four experimental treatments; paddock (P), fully stabled (FS), partly stabled (PS) and yard (Y). Each horse received 6 days acclimatisation prior to the 24 h recording period. Time spent in lying and activity were electronically recorded using a tilt switch and motion sensor connected to a data logger worn on the horse’s left foreleg. Time spent active during the first 5 min of release from stable to paddock in the PS treatment (days 1 and 5) and at the same time of day in the P treatment was used as a measure of rebound behaviour. Effect of housing conditions on total time spent active was highly significant (FS = 123 s, PS = 158 s, Y = 377 s, P = 779 s, P < 0.001). Housing conditions did not significantly affect total time spent lying (P = 0.646). Horses were significantly more active, compared with baseline paddock behaviour, on release from stabling on both days 1 (P = 0.006) and 5 (P = 0.025) of PS treatment. These results suggest that activity patterns of horses, but not lying behaviour, are affected by the housing conditions tested and that rebound activity occurs in horses after a period of confinement.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of diets enriched with plant oils or seeds, high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), on the fatty acid profile of sheep intramuscular and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). Sixty-six lambs were blocked according to initial body weight and randomly assigned to six concentrate-based rations containing 60 g fat/kg dry matter from different sources: (1) Megalac (MG; ruminally protected saturated fat), (2) camelina oil (CO), (3) linseed oil (LO), (4) NaOH-treated camelina seed (CS), (5) NaOH-treated linseed (LS) or (6) CO protected from ruminal saturation by reaction with ethanolamine; camelina oil amides (CA). The animals were offered the experimental diets for 100 days, after which samples of m. longissimusdorsi and SAT were collected and the fatty acid profile determined by GLC. The data were analyzed using ANOVA with ‘a priori’ contrasts including camelina v. linseed, oil v. NaOH-treated seeds and CS v. CA. Average daily gain and total fatty acids in intramuscular adipose tissue were similar across treatments. The NaOH-treatment of seeds was more effective in enhancing cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) incorporation than the corresponding oil, but the latter resulted in a higher content of trans-11 18:1 in both muscle neutral and polar lipids (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, respectively). Inclusion of LS resulted in the highest PUFA:saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio in total intramuscular fat (0.22). The NaOH-treatment of seeds resulted in a higher PUFA/SFA ratio (0.21 v. 0.18, P < 0.001) than oils and on average, linseed resulted in a higher PUFA/SFA ratio than camelina (P < 0.01). Lambs offered LS had the highest concentration of n-3 PUFA in the muscle, while those offered MG had the lowest (P < 0.001). This was reflected in the lowest (P < 0.001) n-6: n-3 PUFA ratio for LS-fed lambs (1.15) than any other treatment, which ranged from 2.14 to 1.72, and the control (5.28). The trends found in intramuscular fat were confirmed by the data for SAT. This study demonstrated the potential advantage from a human nutrition perspective of feeding NaOH-treated seeds rich in PUFA when compared to the corresponding oil. The use of camelina amides achieved a greater degree of protection of dietary PUFA, but decreased the incorporation of biohydrogenation intermediates such as cis-9, trans-11 CLA and trans-11 18:1 compared to NaOH-treated seeds.

Twenty-seven North Country Cheviot ewes, each carrying twin foetuses and having a mean body weight at 6 weeks prior to parturition of 81 kg were individually penned and offered a constant daily intake of 16·75 MJ metabolizable energy during the last 6 weeks of gestation. At parturition the ewes were allocated to one of three dried grass/concentrate diets containing (1) 10·3, (2) 13·6 or (3) 16·9 % crude protein (CP) and 10 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per kg. The mean daily CP intakes for diets 1 to 3 were 273, 340 and 415 g respectively and the mean daily ME intake was 25 MJ. Within each level of dietary CP intake the lambs were weaned at either 25, 35 or 41 days of age.

There were no significant diet × stage of weaning interactions in milk yield or ewe body-weight change during lactation. The mean daily levels of milk production were 2·4, 2·9 and 3·1 kg for diets 1 to 3 respectively. The corresponding values for ewe body-weight loss were 118, 170 and 265 g per day. When the diet contained 13·8% CP the incremental increase in milk production per unit increase in protein intake was 4·2 g/g. This gave an incremental increase in lamb growth rate of 0·79 g/g and was equivalent to the associated incremental increase in ewe body-weight loss.

A reduction in the concentration of CP in the ewes' diet when the lambs are 3 weeks of age may be a useful practical procedure for decreasing milk production and for reducing the body-weight loss of the ewe in a frequent breeding system.
