1. An involution of a projective plane π is a collineation X of π such that λ2 = 1. Involutions play an important röle in the theory of finite projective planes. According to Baer [2], an involution λ of a finite projective plane of order n is either a perspectivity, or it fixes a subplane of π of order in the last case, λ is called a Baer involution.

While there are many facts known about collineation groups of finite projective planes containing perspectivities (see for instance [4; 5]), the investigation of Baer involutions seems rather difficult. The few results obtained about planes admitting Baer involutions are restricted only to special cases. Our aim in the present paper is to investigate finite projective planes admitting a large number of Baer involutions. It is known (see for instance [3, p. 401]) that in a finite Desarguesian projective plane of square order, the vertices of every quadrangle are fixed by exactly one Baer involution.

Let be a Moufang plane. By specializing one line ω, the line at infinity, weobtain an affine Moufang plane . The group generated by the shears of is called the equiaffine group. Veblen [9, § 52] asked whether every equiaffinity is a product of two affine reflections. He gave a proof which will work in an affine Pappian plane, using the following two properties.

Property 1. If an equiaffinity fixes two distinct proper points of , it fixes every point collinear with them.

Property 2. Let e be an equiaffinity and P a point such that ppe2pe3 is a triangle. Then the lines PePe2 and PPe3 are parallel.

Without using these properties, it will be proved that the answer to Veblen's question is “yes“ if and only if the Moufang plane is Pappian.

1.1. If a group satisfies the maximal condition for normal subgroups, then all its central factors are necessarily finitely generated. In [2], Hall asked whether there exist finitely generated soluble groups which do not satisfy the maximal condition for normal subgroups but all of whose central factors are finitely generated. We shall answer this question in the affirmative. We shall also construct a finitely generated group all of whose subnormal subgroups are perfect (and which therefore has no non-trivial central factors), but which does not satisfy the maximal condition for normal subgroups. Related to these examples is the question of which classes of finitely generated groups satisfy the maximal condition for normal subgroups. A characterization of such classes has been obtained by Hall, and we shall include his result as our first theorem.

Let f: X → X be a continuous mapping of the compact metrizable space X into itself with a singleton. In [3] Janos proved that for any λ, 0 < λ < 1, a metric ρ compatible with the topology of X exists such that ρ(f(x), f(y)) ≦ λρ(x, y) for all x, y ∈X. More recently, Janos [4] has shown that if, in addition, f is one-to-one, then a Hilbert space H and a homeomorphism μ: X → H exist such that μfμ-1 is the restriction to μ[X] of the transformation sending y ∈ H into λy. Our aim in this note is to show that in both cases a homeomorphism h of X into l2 exists such that hfh-1 is the restriction of a linear transformation.

A pseudo-complemented lattice is a lattice L with zero such that for every a ∊ L there exists a* ∊ L such that, for all x ∊ L, a ∧ x = 0 if and only if x ≦ a*. a* is called a pseudo-complement of a. It is clear that for each element a of a pseudo-complemented lattice L, a* is uniquely determined by a. Thus * can be regarded as a unary operation on L. Moreover, each pseudo-complemented lattice contains the unit, namely 0*. It follows that every pseudo-complemented lattice L can be regarded as an algebra (L; (∧, ∨, *, 0, 1)) of type (2, 2, 1, 0, 0). In this paper, we consider only distributive pseudo-complemented lattices. For simplicity, we call such a lattice a p-algebra.

If G is an ordinary group and H is a non-empty subset of G, then there are two elementary criteria for H to be a subgroup of G. The first and more general is that the mapping H × H → G × G → G, via 〈x, y〉 ⟼ xy–1 factor through H. The second is that H be finite and closed under multiplication.

In the category of group schemes, if one writes down the hypotheses for the first criterion in diagram form, one can supply the proof by a suitable translation of the classical arguments. The only point that causes any difficulty whatsoever is that one must assume that the structure morphism πH: H → S (S is the base scheme) is an epimorphism in order to factor the identity section through H. The second criterion is also true for group schemes under a mild finite presentation hypothesis. It is our aim to provide a simple proof for the following theorem.

Liebmann [12] proved that the only ovaloids with constant mean curvature in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space are spheres. This result has been generalized to the case of convex closed hypersurfaces in an m-dimensional Euclidean space by Alexandrov [1], Bonnesen and Fenchel [3], Hopf [4], Hsiung [5], and Süss [14].

The result has been further generalized to the case of closed hypersurfaces in an m-dimensional Riemannian manifold by Alexandrov [2], Hsiung [6], Katsurada [7; 8; 9], Ōtsuki [13], and by myself [15; 16].

The attempt to generalize the result to the case of closed submanifolds in an m-dimensional Riemannian manifold has been recently done by Katsurada [10; 11], Kôjyô [10], and Nagai [11].

Let X(t) denote real-valued Brownian motion on the interval 0 ≦ t ≦ 1, so normalized that E(X2(t)) = t. We prove some theorems about transforms X(F) of closed sets F: in general, F is not known in advance but depends on X. The main point of comparison among sets is taken to be their Hausdorff dimension, and in this respect the linear process is quite different from the planar. We state and discuss briefly two theorems.

Plainly, statements (A) and (B) are nearly best possible. For the planar process dimX(F) = 2 dim F (with the same quantification as in (A)) [6].

This paper is a continuation of [1; 2]. In [2], I stated that I had been unable to construct examples of planes satisfying various conditions. Some of the examples that I have since constructed are given below. A discussion of one-dimensional absolute geometries, with examples, will be given in a separate paper. The relevant parts of [1] and [2] are [1, § 1, § 2 up to 2.4; 2, § 2]. We shall use the notation and terminology of [1; 2]; the axioms Cl*-C4* and C4** (referred to below) can all be found in [1].

We shall show here that spaces of dimension greater than 1 exist, both Archimedean and non-Archimedean, satisfying Cl*-C4*, in which not all points are isometric, and that C4** does not follow from Cl*-C4* in non- Archimedean geometries of dimension greater than 1.

In [1] de Groot has introduced the notation “connectedly generated” (or eg) for those spaces in which the closed connected sets form a subbase for the topology. He pointed out that these are the semi-locally connected spaces of Whyburn. See [5; 6].

If X is cg, then, since X is closed, X is the union of a finite number of closed connected sets and, thus, has only a finite number of components. If p is any point in a eg space, and Nv is any neighbourhood of p, then the complement of Nv may be covered by a finite number of closed connected sets, none of which contain p.

In [1] and in [2] the concept of “screening” is introduced and shown to be usefully related to local connectedness and construction of compactifications for completely regular spaces. We review this concept in § 2.

In this note we are concerned with several questions on positive definite functions over a Hausdorff locally compact group. The main result, Theorem A, gives some necessary and sufficient conditions for to be a positive definite function when μ is a (complex Radon) measure. In particular, is a positive definite function if and only if μ ∊ L2, and Theorem B then follows by giving a complete characterization of functions of the type , where f ∊ L2. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these results is that they provide further examples of results over a non-abelian, non-compact group, which otherwise are simple consequences (with μ, a bounded measure in Theorem A) of the theorems of Plancherel and Bochner.

Unless otherwise specified, all notation and definitions will follow [1;2]. The underlying group will always be G, a Hausdorff locally compact group with identity e, and with left Haar measure dx.

In this paper we consider the value distribution of a meromorphic function whose behaviour is prescribed along a spiral. The existence of extremely wild holomorphic functions is established. Indeed a very weak form of one of our results would be that there are holomorphic functions (in the unit disc or the plane) for which every curve “tending to the boundary” is a Julia curve.

The theorems in this paper generalize results of Gavrilov [7], Lange [9], and Seidel [11].

2. Preliminaries. For the most part we will be dealing with the metric space (D, ρ) where D is the unit disc, |z| < 1, and ρ is the non-Euclidean hyperbolic metric on D. The chordal metric on the Riemann sphere will be denoted by x.

Graphs possessing a certain property are often characterized in terms of a type of configuration or subgraph which they cannot possess. For example, a graph is totally disconnected (or, has chromatic number one) if and only if it contains no lines; a graph is a forest (or, has point-arboricity one) if and only if it contains no cycles. Chartrand, Geller, and Hedetniemi [2] defined a graph to have property Pn if it contains no subgraph homeomorphic from the complete graph Kn+1 or the complete bipartite graph

For the first four natural numbers n, the graphs with property Pn are exactly the totally disconnected graphs, forests, outerplanar and planar graphs, respectively. This unification suggested the extension of many results known to hold for one of the above four classes of graphs to one or more of the remaining classes.

This paper is a sequel to [2], whose primary purposes are to clarify and generalize the concept introduced there of an eigenfunction of an inner function, and to answer questions raised there concerning the equivalence of several possible forms of the definition. A new definition, proposed here, leads to a complete characterization of the eigenfunctions of Potapov inner functions of normal operators, and the result is more satisfactory than [2, Theorem 3.4], although the latter is used strongly in the proof.

Let be an inner function in the sense of Lax; i.e., is almost everywhere (a.e.) a unitary operator on a separable Hilbert space and belongs weakly to the Hardy class H2. An analytic function q (which will have to be a scalar inner function) was defined to be an eigenfunction of if the set of z in the disk {z: |z| ≦ 1} for which is invertible is a set of linear measure 0 on the circle {z: |z| = 1}.

In solving the word problem for free lattices, Whitman [4] showed that free lattices admit canonical representations, that is, of all polynomials over the generating set representing an element of the lattice, the polynomial of shortest length is unique up to commutativity and associativity. These well-defined shortest polynomials have proved very important in analyzing the internal structure of free lattices in detail; see, e.g., [5].

Sorkin [3] proved that the free product of chains also admits canonical representations; these were exploited by Rolf [2]. In the above-mentioned paper, Sorkin also suggested that the free product of two copies of 22 does not admit canonical representations.

In recent years there has been some interest in trying to improve the behaviour of maps by extending their domains. For example, in 1953 Whyburn showed that every map is the restriction of a compact map [17]. Similarly, Krolevec proved in 1967 that each locally perfect map can be extended to a perfect map [12] and in an as yet unpublished paper, Dickman obtained the same result for arbitrary maps [4]. In this paper we show that every map can be extended to an open map so that certain properties of the domain and range are preserved in the new domain. These results are then used to obtain analogues and improvements of recent theorems of Arhangel'skiï, Ĉoban, Hodel, and Proizvolov.

A U-ring is a ring in which every subring is a meta ideal. A meta ideal of a ring R is a subring I of R which lies in a chain of subrings,

with the properties:

(1) Iλ is an ideal of Iλ+1 for all λ < β;

(2) If α is a limit ordinal number, then Iα = ∪λ<αIλ.

Freidman [3] proved that every nil U-ring is a locally nilpotent ring. Since there are many locally nilpotent rings which are not U-rings, the class of locally nilpotent rings is not a very good bound for the class of nil U-rings. This paper establishes a new bound for nil U-rings based on a property of the multiplicative semigroup of the ring.

In this paper we present three results involving function constructions, together with an example which shows the usefulness of our considerations. The first result, Theorem 1, states roughly that homotopy is self related through function space constructions. Section 1 is devoted to the precise statement and proof of this theorem.

In order to clarify the results of § 2 we draw an analogy. Recall that under certain mild restrictions on the spaces involved, a map p: E → B is a fibration, and a map i: A → X is a cofibration, if and only if the induced maps p*: EZ → BZ and i*: ZX → ZA are fibrations for all spaces Z. The two theorems of § 2 give, in a more general category, analogous results for the notions of limit and colimit. Finally, in § 3 we suggest the importance of this type of result by using it, together with Theorem 1 and the above analogy, to deduce a result from its dual.
