We prove that if the set of unordered pairs of real numbers is coloured by finitely many colours, there is a set of reals homeomorphic to the rationals whose pairs have at most two colours. Our proof uses large cardinals and verifies a conjecture of Galvin from the 1970s. We extend this result to an essentially optimal class of topological spaces in place of the reals.

We prove that the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (both focusing and defocusing) is globally well-posed in $H^s({{\mathbb {R}}})$ for any regularity $s>-\frac 12$. Well-posedness has long been known for $s\geq 0$, see [55], but not previously for any $s<0$. The scaling-critical value $s=-\frac 12$ is necessarily excluded here, since instantaneous norm inflation is known to occur [11, 40, 48].

We also prove (in a parallel fashion) well-posedness of the real- and complex-valued modified Korteweg–de Vries equations in $H^s({{\mathbb {R}}})$ for any $s>-\frac 12$. The best regularity achieved previously was $s\geq \tfrac 14$ (see [15, 24, 33, 39]).

To overcome the failure of uniform continuity of the data-to-solution map, we employ the method of commuting flows introduced in [37]. In stark contrast with our arguments in [37], an essential ingredient in this paper is the demonstration of a local smoothing effect for both equations. Despite the nonperturbative nature of the well-posedness, the gain of derivatives matches that of the underlying linear equation. To compensate for the local nature of the smoothing estimates, we also demonstrate tightness of orbits. The proofs of both local smoothing and tightness rely on our discovery of a new one-parameter family of coercive microscopic conservation laws that remain meaningful at this low regularity.

Let $\Gamma _{g}$ be the fundamental group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g\geq 2$ . We develop a new method for integrating over the representation space $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}=\mathrm {Hom}(\Gamma _{g},S_{n})$ , where $S_{n}$ is the symmetric group of permutations of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$ . Equivalently, this is the space of all vertex-labeled, n-sheeted covering spaces of the closed surface of genus g.

Given $\phi \in \mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ and $\gamma \in \Gamma _{g}$ , we let $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }(\phi )$ be the number of fixed points of the permutation $\phi (\gamma )$ . The function $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }$ is a special case of a natural family of functions on $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ called Wilson loops. Our new methodology leads to an asymptotic formula, as $n\to \infty $ , for the expectation of $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }$ with respect to the uniform probability measure on $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ , which is denoted by $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]$ . We prove that if $\gamma \in \Gamma _{g}$ is not the identity and q is maximal such that $\gamma $ is a q th power in $\Gamma _{g}$ , then

as $n\to \infty $ , where $d\left (q\right )$ is the number of divisors of q. Even the weaker corollary that $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]=o(n)$ as $n\to \infty $ is a new result of this paper. We also prove that $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]$ can be approximated to any order $O(n^{-M})$ by a polynomial in $n^{-1}$ .

We use microlocal sheaf theory to show that knots can only have Legendrian isotopic conormal tori if they themselves are isotopic or mirror images.

We consider the $\mathbb {T}^{4}$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS), which is energy-critical. We study the unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the NLS via the cubic Gross–Pitaevskii hierarchy, an uncommon method for NLS analysis which is being explored [24, 35] and does not require the existence of a solution in Strichartz-type spaces. We prove U-V multilinear estimates to replace the previously used Sobolev multilinear estimates. To incorporate the weaker estimates, we work out new combinatorics from scratch and compute, for the first time, the time integration limits, in the recombined Duhamel–Born expansion. The new combinatorics and the U-V estimates then seamlessly conclude the $H^{1}$ unconditional uniqueness for the NLS under the infinite-hierarchy framework. This work establishes a unified scheme to prove $H^{1}$ uniqueness for the $ \mathbb {R}^{3}/\mathbb {R}^{4}/\mathbb {T}^{3}/\mathbb {T}^{4}$ energy-critical Gross–Pitaevskii hierarchies and thus the corresponding NLS.

In this paper, we introduce the Newton decomposition on a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$. Based on it we give a nice decomposition of the cocenter of its Hecke algebra. Here we consider both the ordinary cocenter associated to the usual conjugation action on $G$ and the twisted cocenter arising from the theory of twisted endoscopy. We give Iwahori–Matsumoto type generators on the Newton components of the cocenter. Based on it, we prove a generalization of Howe’s conjecture on the restriction of (both ordinary and twisted) invariant distributions. Finally we give an explicit description of the structure of the rigid cocenter.

Let X be a smooth and projective threefold with a simple normal crossings divisor D. We construct the Donaldson–Thomas theory of the pair $(X|D)$ enumerating ideal sheaves on X relative to D. These moduli spaces are compactified by studying subschemes in expansions of the target geometry, and the moduli space carries a virtual fundamental class leading to numerical invariants with expected properties. We formulate punctual evaluation, rationality and wall-crossing conjectures, in parallel with the standard theory. Our formalism specializes to the Li–Wu theory of relative ideal sheaves when the divisor is smooth and is parallel to recent work on logarithmic Gromov–Witten theory with expansions.

The article studies inverse problems of determining unknown coefficients in various semi-linear and quasi-linear wave equations given the knowledge of an associated source-to-solution map. We introduce a method to solve inverse problems for nonlinear equations using interaction of three waves that makes it possible to study the inverse problem in all globally hyperbolic spacetimes of the dimension $n+1\geqslant 3$ and with partial data. We consider the case when the set $\Omega _{\mathrm{in}}$ , where the sources are supported, and the set $\Omega _{\mathrm{out}}$ , where the observations are made, are separated. As model problems we study both a quasi-linear equation and a semi-linear wave equation and show in each case that it is possible to uniquely recover the background metric up to the natural obstructions for uniqueness that is governed by finite speed of propagation for the wave equation and a gauge corresponding to change of coordinates. The proof consists of two independent components. In the geometric part of the article we introduce a novel geometrical object, the three-to-one scattering relation. We show that this relation determines uniquely the topological, differential and conformal structures of the Lorentzian manifold in a causal diamond set that is the intersection of the future of the point $p_{in}\in \Omega _{\mathrm{in}}$ and the past of the point $p_{out}\in \Omega _{\mathrm{out}}$ . In the analytic part of the article we study multiple-fold linearisation of the nonlinear wave equation using Gaussian beams. We show that the source-to-solution map, corresponding to sources in $\Omega _{\mathrm{in}}$ and observations in $\Omega _{\mathrm{out}}$ , determines the three-to-one scattering relation. The methods developed in the article do not require any assumptions on the conjugate or cut points.

In this paper, we study multiple zeta values (abbreviated as MZV’s) over function fields in positive characteristic. Our main result is to prove Thakur’s basis conjecture, which plays the analogue of Hoffman’s basis conjecture for real MZV’s. As a consequence, we derive Todd’s dimension conjecture, which is the analogue of Zagier’s dimension conjecture for classical real MZV’s.

We define a new family of spectral invariants associated to certain Lagrangian links in compact and connected surfaces of any genus. We show that our invariants recover the Calabi invariant of Hamiltonians in their limit. As applications, we resolve several open questions from topological surface dynamics and continuous symplectic topology: We show that the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of any compact surface with (possibly empty) boundary is not simple; we extend the Calabi homomorphism to the group of hameomorphisms constructed by Oh and Müller, and we construct an infinite-dimensional family of quasi-morphisms on the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere.

Our invariants are inspired by recent work of Polterovich and Shelukhin defining and applying spectral invariants, via orbifold Floer homology, for links composed of parallel circles in the two-sphere. A particular feature of our work is that it avoids the orbifold setting and relies instead on ‘classical’ Floer homology. This not only substantially simplifies the technical background but seems essential for some aspects (such as the application to constructing quasi-morphisms).

We define, for each quasisyntomic ring R (in the sense of Bhatt et al., Publ. Math. IHES 129 (2019), 199–310), a category $\mathrm {DM}^{\mathrm {adm}}(R)$ of admissible prismatic Dieudonné crystals over R and a functor from p-divisible groups over R to $\mathrm {DM}^{\mathrm {adm}}(R)$ . We prove that this functor is an antiequivalence. Our main cohomological tool is the prismatic formalism recently developed by Bhatt and Scholze.

We prove two theorems about the Malcev Lie algebra associated to the Torelli group of a surface of genus g: Stably, it is Koszul and the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism consists only of trivial $\mathrm {Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb {Z})$ -representations lying in the centre.

We introduce a notion of embedding codimension of an arbitrary local ring, establish some general properties and study in detail the case of arc spaces of schemes of finite type over a field. Viewing the embedding codimension as a measure of singularities, our main result can be interpreted as saying that the singularities of the arc space are maximal at the arcs that are fully embedded in the singular locus of the underlying scheme, and progressively improve as we move away from said locus. As an application, we complement a theorem of Drinfeld, Grinberg and Kazhdan on formal neighbourhoods in arc spaces by providing a converse to their theorem, an optimal bound for the embedding codimension of the formal model appearing in the statement, a precise formula for the embedding dimension of the model constructed in Drinfeld’s proof and a geometric meaningful way of realising the decomposition stated in the theorem.

Let${\mathbb M}$ be an affine variety equipped with a foliation, both defined over a number field ${\mathbb K}$. For an algebraic $V\subset {\mathbb M}$ over ${\mathbb K}$, write $\delta _{V}$ for the maximum of the degree and log-height of V. Write $\Sigma _{V}$ for the points where the leaves intersect V improperly. Fix a compact subset ${\mathcal B}$ of a leaf ${\mathcal L}$. We prove effective bounds on the geometry of the intersection ${\mathcal B}\cap V$. In particular, when $\operatorname {codim} V=\dim {\mathcal L}$ we prove that $\#({\mathcal B}\cap V)$ is bounded by a polynomial in $\delta _{V}$ and $\log \operatorname {dist}^{-1}({\mathcal B},\Sigma _{V})$. Using these bounds we prove a result on the interpolation of algebraic points in images of ${\mathcal B}\cap V$ by an algebraic map $\Phi $. For instance, under suitable conditions we show that $\Phi ({\mathcal B}\cap V)$ contains at most $\operatorname {poly}(g,h)$ algebraic points of log-height h and degree g.

We deduce several results in Diophantine geometry. Following Masser and Zannier, we prove that given a pair of sections $P,Q$ of a nonisotrivial family of squares of elliptic curves that do not satisfy a constant relation, whenever $P,Q$ are simultaneously torsion their order of torsion is bounded effectively by a polynomial in $\delta _{P},\delta _{Q}$; in particular, the set of such simultaneous torsion points is effectively computable in polynomial time. Following Pila, we prove that given $V\subset {\mathbb C}^{n}$, there is an (ineffective) upper bound, polynomial in $\delta _{V}$, for the degrees and discriminants of maximal special subvarieties; in particular, it follows that the André–Oort conjecture for powers of the modular curve is decidable in polynomial time (by an algorithm depending on a universal, ineffective Siegel constant). Following Schmidt, we show that our counting result implies a Galois-orbit lower bound for torsion points on elliptic curves of the type previously obtained using transcendence methods by David.

Using new explicit formulas for the stationary Gromov–Witten/Pandharipande–Thomas ( $\mathrm {GW}/{\mathrm {PT}}$ ) descendent correspondence for nonsingular projective toric threefolds, we show that the correspondence intertwines the Virasoro constraints in Gromov–Witten theory for stable maps with the Virasoro constraints for stable pairs proposed in [18]. Since the Virasoro constraints in Gromov–Witten theory are known to hold in the toric case, we establish the stationary Virasoro constraints for the theory of stable pairs on toric threefolds. As a consequence, new Virasoro constraints for tautological integrals over Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces are also obtained.

The mathematical physicists Bershadsky–Cecotti–Ooguri–Vafa (BCOV) proposed, in a seminal article from 1994, a conjecture extending genus zero mirror symmetry to higher genera. With a view towards a refined formulation of the Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem, we offer a mathematical description of the BCOV conjecture at genus one. As an application of the arithmetic Riemann–Roch theorem of Gillet–Soulé and our previous results on the BCOV invariant, we establish this conjecture for Calabi–Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our contribution takes place on the B-side, and together with the work of Zinger on the A-side, it provides the first complete examples of the mirror symmetry program in higher dimensions. The case of quintic threefolds was studied by Fang–Lu–Yoshikawa. Our approach also lends itself to arithmetic considerations of the BCOV invariant, and we study a Chowla–Selberg type theorem expressing it in terms of special $\Gamma $ -values for certain Calabi–Yau manifolds with complex multiplication.

In 1981, Thompson proved that, if $n\geqslant 1$ is any integer and $G$ is any finite subgroup of $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ , then $G$ has a semi-invariant of degree at most $4n^{2}$ . He conjectured that, in fact, there is a universal constant $C$ such that for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and any finite subgroup $G<\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ , $G$ has a semi-invariant of degree at most $Cn$ . This conjecture would imply that the ${\it\alpha}$ -invariant ${\it\alpha}_{G}(\mathbb{P}^{n-1})$ , as introduced by Tian in 1987, is at most $C$ . We prove Thompson’s conjecture in this paper.

We present a general approach to justify the random phase approximation for the homogeneous Fermi gas in three dimensions in the mean-field scaling regime. We consider a system of N fermions on a torus, interacting via a two-body repulsive potential proportional to $N^{-\frac {1}{3}}$. In the limit $N\rightarrow \infty $, we derive the exact leading order of the correlation energy and the bosonic elementary excitations of the system, which are consistent with the prediction of the random phase approximation in the physics literature.

In [14], Jacquet–Piatetskii-Shapiro–Shalika defined a family of compact open subgroups of p-adic general linear groups indexed by nonnegative integers and established the theory of local newforms for irreducible generic representations. In this paper, we extend their results to all irreducible representations. To do this, we define a new family of compact open subgroups indexed by certain tuples of nonnegative integers. For the proof, we introduce the Rankin–Selberg integrals for Speh representations.

We study higher uniformity properties of the Möbius function $\mu $, the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda $, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(X,X+H]$ with $X^{\theta +\varepsilon } \leq H \leq X^{1-\varepsilon }$ for a fixed constant $0 \leq \theta < 1$ and any $\varepsilon>0$.

More precisely, letting $\Lambda ^\sharp $ and $d_k^\sharp $ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda $ and $d_k$ and $\mu ^\sharp = 0$, we show for instance that, for any nilsequence $F(g(n)\Gamma )$, we have

when $\theta = 5/8$ and $f \in \{\Lambda , \mu , d_k\}$ or $\theta = 1/3$ and $f = d_2$.

As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|f-f^\sharp \|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed s for these choices of $f,\theta $. As applications, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions to linear equations in primes in short intervals and show that multiple ergodic averages along primes in short intervals converge in $L^2$.

Our innovations include the use of multiparameter nilsequence equidistribution theorems to control type $II$ sums and an elementary decomposition of the neighborhood of a hyperbola into arithmetic progressions to control type $I_2$ sums.
