We consider transversally harmonic foliated maps between two Riemannian manifolds equipped with Riemannian foliations. We give various characterisations of such maps and we study the relation between the properties ‘harmonic’ and ‘transversally harmonic’ for a given map. We also consider these problems for particular classes of manifolds: manifolds with transversally almost Hermitian foliations and Riemannian flows.

This paper contributes to the classification problem of pq dimensional Hopf algebras H over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, where p, q are odd primes. It is shown that such Hopf algebras H are semisimple for the pairs of odd primes (p, q)=(3,11),(3,13),(3,19),(5,17),(5,19),(5,23),(5,29),(7,17),(7,19),(7,23),(7,29),(11,29),(13,29).

Let Xn, n ≥ 1 be an asymptotically almost negatively associated (AANA) sequence of random variables. Some complete convergence and Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund type strong laws of large numbers for an AANA sequence of random variables are obtained. The results obtained generalize the results of Kim, Ko and Lee (Kim, T. S., Ko, M. H. and Lee, I. H. 2004. On the strong laws for asymptotically almost negatively associated random variables. Rocky Mountain J. of Math. 34, 979–989.).

A homology theory based on measures, first mentioned by Thurston, is naturally defined here as a functor into the category of locally convex topological vector spaces. It is proved that the first homology space is Hausdorff.

Let K[x] be a polynomial algebra in a variable x over a commutative -algebra K, and Γ′ the monoid of K-algebra monomorphisms of K[x] of the type σ: x ↦ x+λ2x2 + . . . +λnxn, λi ∈ K, λn is a unit of K. It is proved that for each σ ∈ Γ′ there are only finitely many distinct decompositions σ = σ1. . .σs in Γ′. Moreover, each such decomposition is uniquely determined by the degrees of components: if σ = σ1. . . σs= τ1 . . . τs then σ1=τ1, λ. . ., σs=τs if and only if deg(σ1)=deg(τ1), . . ., deg(σs)=deg(τs). Explicit formulae are given for the components σi via the coefficients λj and the degrees deg(σk) (as an application of the inversion formula for polynomial automorphisms in several variables from [1]). In general, for a polynomial there are no formulae (in radicals) for its divisors (elementary Galois theory). Surprisingly, one can write such formulae where instead of the product of polynomials one considers their composition (as polynomial functions).

Let T be a bounded operator on a complex Banach space X. Let V be an open subset of the complex plane. We give a condition sufficient for the mapping f(z)↦ (T−z)f(z) to have closed range in the Fréchet space H(V, X) of analytic X-valued functions on V. Moreover, we show that there is a largest open set U for which the map f(z)↦ (T−z)f(z) has closed range in H(V, X) for all V⊆U. Finally, we establish analogous results in the setting of the weak–* topology on H(V, X*).

We use a result of Y. Furuta to show that for almost all positive integers m, the cyclotomic field has an infinite Hilbert p-class field tower with high rank Galois groups at each step, simultaneously for all primes p of size up to about (log logm)1 + o(1). We also use a recent result of B. Schmidt to show that for infinitely many m there is an infinite Hilbert p-class field tower over for some p≥m0.3385 + o(1). These results have immediate applications to the divisibility properties of the class number of .

In this paper, we prove that a strongly convex and Kähler-Finsler metric is a complex Berwald metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature if and only if it is a complex locally Minkowski metric.

In this paper, we study ovals of symmetries and the fixed points of their products on Riemann surfaces of genus g ≥ 2. We show how the number of these points affects the total number of ovals of symmetries. We give a generalisation of Bujalance, Costa and Singerman's theorems in which we show upper bounds for the total number of ovals of two symmetries in terms of g, the order n and the number m of the fixed points of their product, and we show their attainments for n holding some divisibility conditions. Finally, we give an upper bound for m in terms of n and g, and we study conditions under which it has given parity.

In this paper, we obtain algebraic equations for all genus 2 compact Riemann surfaces that admit a semi-regular (or uniform) covering of the Riemann sphere with more than two lifting symmetries. By a lifting symmetry, we mean an automorphism of the target surface which can be lifted to the covering. We restrict ourselves to the genus 2 surfaces in order to make computations easier and to make possible to find their algebraic equations as well. At the same time, the main ingredient (Main Proposition) depends neither on the genus, nor on the order of the group of lifting symmetries. Because of this, the paper can be thought as a generalisation for the non-normal case to the question of lifting automorphisms of a compact Riemann surface to a normal covering, treated, for instance, by E. Bujalance and M. Conder in a joint paper, or by P. Turbek solely.

The paper deals with a criterion for the sum of a special series to be a transcendental number. The result does not make use of divisibility properties or any kind of equation and depends only on the random oscillation of convergence.

It is shown that if C1 and C2 are maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras (masas) of C*-algebras A1 and A2, respectively, then the completion C1 ⊗ C2 of the algebraic tensor product C1 ⊙ C2 of C1 and C2 in any C*-tensor product A1 ⊗βA2 is maximal abelian provided that C1 has the extension property of Kadison and Singer and C2 contains an approximate identity for A2. Examples are given to show that this result can fail if the conditions on the two masas do not both hold. This gives an answer to a long-standing question, but leaves open some other interesting problems, one of which turns out to have a potentially intriguing implication for the Kadison-Singer extension problem.

We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on a polynomial P(s, t) so that the (global) double Hilbert transforms along polynomial surfaces (s, t, P(s, t)) in R3 are bounded on Lp for 1 < p < ∞.

In this paper we shall show that Weyl's theorem holds for class A(k) operators T where k≥>1, via its hyponormal transform . Next we shall prove some applications of Weyl's theorem on class A(k) operators.

We prove that the only solutions in coprime positive integers to the equation are (x, y, z)=(n!–2, 1, 1, n), n≥3.

It is shown that every L2-summand vector of a dual real Banach space is a norm-attaining functional. As consequences, the L2-summand vectors of a dual real Banach space can be determined by the L2-summand vectors of its predual; for every n ∈ , every real Banach space can be equivalently renormed so that the set of norm-attaining functionals is n-lineable; and it is easy to find equivalent norms on non-reflexive dual real Banach spaces that are not dual norms.

A regular semigroup (cf. [4, p. 38]) is a C0-semigroup T(⋅) that has an extension as a holomorphic semigroup W(⋅) in the right halfplane , such that ||W(⋅)|| is bounded in the ‘unit rectangle’ Q:=(0, 1]× [−1, 1]. The important basic facts about a regular semigroup T(⋅) are: (i) it possesses a boundary groupU(⋅), defined as the limit lims → 0+W(s+i⋅) in the strong operator topology; (ii) U(⋅) is a C0-group, whose generator is iA, where A denotes the generator of T(⋅); and (iii) W(s+it)=T(s)U(t) for all s+it ∈ (cf. Theorems 17.9.1 and 17.9.2 in [3]). The following converse theorem is proved here. Let A be the generator of a C0-semigroup T(⋅). If iA generates a C0-group, U(⋅), then T(⋅) is a regular semigroup, and its holomorphic extension is given by (iii). This result is related to (but not included in) known results of Engel (cf. Theorem II.4.6 in [2]), Liu [7] and the author [6] for holomorphic extensions into arbitrary sectors, of C0-semigroups that are bounded in every proper subsector. The method of proof is also different from the method used in these references. Criteria for generators of regular semigroups follow as easy corollaries.

We study the rate of growth of some integral means of the derivatives of a Blaschke product and we generalize several classical results. Moreover, we obtain the rate of growth of integral means of the derivative of functions in the model subspace KB generated by the Blaschke product B.

We study quantum Schubert varieties from the point of view of regularity conditions. More precisely, we show that these rings are domains that are maximal orders and are AS-Cohen-Macaulay and we determine which of them are AS-Gorenstein. One key fact that enables us to prove these results is that quantum Schubert varieties are quantum graded algebras with a straightening law that have a unique minimal element in the defining poset. We prove a general result showing when such quantum graded algebras are maximal orders. Finally, we exploit these results to show that quantum determinantal rings are maximal orders.
