Let $(\xi_k,\eta_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T\,{:\!=}\, (T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k\,{:\!=}\, \xi_1+\cdots+\xi_{k-1}+\eta_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$ . Consider a general branching process generated by T and let $N_j(t)$ denote the number of the jth generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$ . We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations j which do not depend on t. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell theorem and the key renewal theorem, prove a strong law of large numbers for $N_j$ , and find the first-order asymptotics for the variance of $N_j$ . Also, we prove a functional limit theorem for the vector-valued process $(N_1(ut),\ldots, N_j(ut))_{u\geq0}$ , properly normalized and centered, as $t\to\infty$ . The limit is a vector-valued Gaussian process whose components are integrated Brownian motions.

Gorostiza and Wakolbinger (1991), and Dawson and Perkins (1991) established the same persistence criterion for a class of critical branching particle systems and for a class of superprocesses respectively. In this note we take another approach to the criterion and present a simpler proof of it.

We follow the terminology of Khintchine's monograph [4].

Let us consider a random stream of calls entering a service system which consists of n lines. The service durations are assumed to be identically distributed random variables which are independent both of each other and of the course of the incoming stream.

The recurrent epidemic model has hitherto proved mathematically intractable. It is shown here that by imposing the mild condition that the source of new susceptibles is initially of a constant size M for M sufficiently large that there is zero probability of more than M new susceptibles being added to the population in the course of the epidemic, then state probabilities for the stochastic recurrent epidemic model can be found.

Consider a fork-join queue, where each job upon arrival splits into k tasks and each joins a separate queue that is attended by a single server. Service times are independent, exponentially distributed random variables. Server i works at rate , where μ is constant. We prove that the departure process becomes stochastically faster as the service rates become more homogeneous in the sense of stochastic majorization. Consequently, when all k servers work with equal rates the departure process is stochastically maximized.

We investigate conditions in order to decide whether a given sequence of real numbers represents expected maxima or expected ranges. The main result provides a novel necessary and sufficient condition, relating an expected maxima sequence to a translation of a Bernstein function through its Lévy–Khintchine representation.

A population of susceptible individuals partitioned into m groups and exposed to a contagious disease is considered.

The progress of this simple epidemic is modeled by an m -dimensional stochastic process, whose components are the number of infective individuals in the respective groups at time t. Exact and approximate formulas for the joint and marginal state probabilities are obtained.

A road traffic model with restricted passing, formulated by Newell (1966), is described by conditional cluster point processes and analytically handled by generating functionals of point processes.

The traffic distributions in either space or time are in equilibrium, if the fast cars form a Poisson process with constant intensity combined with Poisson-distributed queues behind the slow cars (Brill (1971)). It is shown that this state of equilibrium is stable, which means that this state will be reached asymptotically for general initial traffic distributions. Furthermore the queues behind the slow cars dissolve asymptotically like independent Poisson processes with diminishing rate, also independent of the process of non-queuing cars. To get these results limit theorems for conditional cluster point processes are formulated.

The paper develops the steady-state solution of a finite space queueing system wherein each of the two non-serial servers is separately in series with two non-serial servers. It is assumed that the arriving units of the same type may demand a different number of service phases. Poisson arrivals and exponential service times are assumed at all the four channels of the system. Service of units is completed on a first-come, first-served basis at each channel. The steady-state solution for infinite queueing space is obtained as a special case of finite queueing space.

A Markovian process with rewards is considered. The interference into its development consists in instantaneous changes of state called replacements. It is shown that, for any replacement policy not depending on the future, the expected reward is a linear function of the expected replacement numbers. The application of this result is illustrated by examples.

Over a finite interval, a Gaussian stationary process can be approximated by a finite trigonometric sum, and the error introduced by the approximation can be exactly bounded, as far as the distribution of the upper tail of the maximum is concerned. A simple case is exhibited, where a narrow band process is well approximated by means of a two-term trigonometric representation.

Some recent results of Oxley and Welsh (1979) and McDiarmid (1981) concerning Bernoulli percolation on clutters are generalized. Our results allow to consider quantitative aspects of percolation on graphs and clutters.

A supercritical age-dependent branching process is considered in which the lifespan of each individual is composed of four phases whose durations have joint probability density f(x1, x2, x3, x4). Starting with a single individual of age zero at time zero we consider the asymptotic behaviour as t→ ∞ of the random variable Z(4) (a0,…, an, t) defined as the number of individuals in phase 4 at time t for which the elapsed phase durations Y01,…, Y04,…, Yi1,…, Yi4,…, Yn4 of the individual itself and its first n ancestors satisfy the inequalities Yij ≦ aij, i = 0,…, n, j = 1,…, 4. The application of the results to the analysis of cell-labelling experiments is described. Finally we state an analogous result which defines (conditional on eventual non-extinction of the population) the asymptotic joint distribution of the phase and elapsed phase durations of an individual drawn at random from the population and the phase durations of its ancestors.

We consider a refracted jump diffusion process having two-sided jumps with rational Laplace transforms. For such a process, by applying a straightforward but interesting approach, we derive formulae for the Laplace transform of its distribution. Our formulae are presented in an attractive form and the approach is novel. In particular, the idea in the application of an approximating procedure is remarkable. In addition, the results are used to price variable annuities with state-dependent fees.

In this paper we study a series of servers with exponentially distributed service times. We find that the sojourn time of a customer at any server depends on the customer's past history only through the customer's interarrival time to that server. A method of calculating the conditional probabilities of sojourn times is developed.

We consider sequential selection of an alternating subsequence from a sequence of independent, identically distributed, continuous random variables, and we determine the exact asymptotic behavior of an optimal sequentially selected subsequence. Moreover, we find (in a sense we make precise) that a person who is constrained to make sequential selections does only about 12 percent worse than a person who can make selections with full knowledge of the random sequence.

Some properties of the Voronoi polygon associated with a moving particle in a regular tessellation are studied. In particular, the area of the variable polygon has played a relevant role in previous studies on plant competition, animal predation, adjustment of the sex ratio in bisexual populations and the gregarious behaviour of animal species.

We consider a stochastic process in a modified Ehrenfest urn model. The modification prescribes there to be a minimum number of balls in each urn, and the process records the differences between treatment assignments under a sampling scheme implemented with this modified Ehrenfest urn model. In contrast to the result that the difference process forms a Markov chain and converges to a stationary distribution under the Ehrenfest urn model, the corresponding process under this modified Ehrenfest urn design satisfies the central limit property. We prove this asymptotic normality property using a central limit theorem for dependent random variables, renewal theory, and two Kolmogorov-type maximal inequalities.

Let (Yn, Nn)n≥1 be independent and identically distributed bivariate random variables such that the Nn are positive with finite mean ν and the Yn have a common heavy-tailed distribution F. We consider the process (Zn)n≥1 defined by Zn = Yn - Σn-1, where It is shown that the probability that the maximum M = maxn≥1Zn exceeds x is approximately as x → ∞, where F' := 1 - F. Then we study the integrated tail of the maximum of a random walk with long-tailed increments and negative drift over the interval [0, σ], defined by some stopping time σ, in the case in which the randomly stopped sum is negative. Finally, an application to risk theory is considered.
