We investigate the stability of a thin Newtonian fluid spreading on a horizontal cylinder under the action of gravity. The capillary ridge forming at the advancing front is known to be unstable with respect to spanwise perturbations, resulting in the formation of fingers. In contrast to the classic case of a flow over an inclined plane, the gravity components along a cylindrical substrate vary in space and the draining flow is time-dependent, making a modal stability analysis inappropriate. A linear optimal transient growth analysis is instead performed to find the optimal spanwise wavenumber. We not only consider the optimal perturbations of the initial film thickness, as commonly done in the literature, but also the optimal topographical perturbations of the substrate, which are of significant practical relevance. We found that, in both cases, the optimal gains are obtained when the perturbation structures are the least affected by the time horizon. The optimal spanwise wavenumber is found to be dependent on the front location, due to the dependence of the characteristic length of the capillary ridge on its polar location.

This paper describes a prototype model experiment designed to test the principle that the ‘excess’ noise of a jet issuing from a conical nozzle can be significantly diminished by reducing the maximum pressure gradient in the flow. The experiment uses a water jet containing flow inhomogeneities in the form of air or helium bubbles exhausting through a conventional conical nozzle or a specially contoured ‘bellmouth’ nozzle. It is argued that the level of the internally generated noise is controlled by the mean-flow pressure gradient, and substantial reductions in the sound level are recorded with the bellmouth nozzle. Certain features of the acoustic pressure signatures of the two-phase flow are examined in detail, in particular a rather surprising absolute difference in the sound pressure levels produced when helium rather than air bubbles are used under otherwise identical mean-flow conditions. Theoretical arguments are advanced which appear to explain the principal features of the observations.

The Brinkley–Kirkwood theory (1947) is modified to determine the law of propagation of a blast wave in an arbitrary inhomogeneous medium for spherically and cylindrically symmetric cases. The shock path is obtained in terms of a simple quadrature. The numerical results for the shock path and the entire flow region behind the shock, propagating in an exponential atmosphere, show excellent agreement with the exact numerical solution.

Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements are presented for a nominally two-dimensional constant-density flow over a surface-mounted triangular cylinder. The thickness of the boundary layer approaching the triangular cylinder is much less than the height of the triangle. Momentum and turbulent kinetic energy balances are presented and comparisons are made with other separated and reattaching flows. Also, time domain information is presented in the form of autocorrelations and spectra. From the energy balances, the importance of the pressure transport term at the high-speed edge of the shear layer is seen. Observations of the relationships between the shapes of the spectra and the details of the energy balance are made. For example, the slope of the velocity spectra varies from the free-stream value of −5/3 to a value of −1 in the middle of the recirculation region. Concurrent with this increase in slope is a decrease in the role of shear production in the turbulent kinetic energy balance and an increase in the role of advection and turbulent transport. From the two-component LDV measurements, a very low-frequency unsteadiness is shown to contribute energy preferentially to different components of the velocity fluctuations depending on the location in the flow.

The nonlinear temporal instability of gas-surrounded planar liquid sheets, whose linear instability contains both sinuous and varicose modes, is studied. Both the weakly nonlinear analysis using a second-order perturbation expansion and the numerical simulation using a boundary integral method have been applied. Their comparison shows that the weakly nonlinear analysis can precisely predict the shapes of sheets for most of the time of disturbance evolution and qualitatively explain the instability mechanism when sheets break up. Both the first harmonics of the linear sinuous mode and linear varicose mode are varicose; they contribute to the breakup of sheets, but the first harmonic generated by the coupling between the linear sinuous and varicose modes is sinuous; it plays an important role in modulating the wave profile. The instability with various initial phase differences between the upper and lower interfaces is examined. Except for the varicose initial disturbance, the linear sinuous mode dominates in the shapes of sheets when their amplitudes grow large. Within the second-order analysis, the major modes that can cause the breakup include the linear varicose mode, the first harmonic of the linear sinuous mode and the first harmonic of the linear varicose mode. The effects of various flow parameters have been investigated. At relatively large wavenumbers where approximate analytical and numerical results agree well when sheets break up, increasing the wavenumber reduces the wave amplitude. Reducing the initial disturbance amplitude makes the first harmonic of the linear sinuous mode the dominant mode in causing the breakup. Increasing the Weber number or gas-to-liquid density ratio significantly reduces breakup time and enhances instability.

The dynamics of moving contact lines in a two-phase Couette flow is investigated by using a matched asymptotic procedure. The walls are assumed to be partially wetting, and the microscopic contact angle is finite but sufficiently small so that the lubrication approach can be used. Explicit formulas are derived to characterize the shear-induced interface deformation and the critical capillary number for the onset of wetting transition. It is found that the apparent contact angle vanishes for liquid–air systems and remains finite for liquid–liquid systems when the wetting transition occurs.

Motivated by understanding mass transport processes occurring in the vitreous chamber of the eye, we consider the steady streaming component of the flow generated in a viscoelastic fluid contained within a hollow, rigid sphere performing small-amplitude, periodic, torsional oscillations about an axis passing through its centre. The problem is solved semi-analytically, assuming that the amplitude of the oscillations is small. The paper extends the work by Repetto et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 608, 2008, pp. 71–80), in which the case of a purely viscous fluid was analysed. However, in reality, in young and healthy subjects, the vitreous humour has complex rheological properties, and so here we model it as a viscoelastic fluid. A similar problem was studied by Nikolakis (Eine Theorie für stationäre Drifterscheinungen viskoelastischer Flüssigkeiten, 1992, VDI). In the present model, the steady streaming flow is governed by four dimensionless parameters. We show that, when we account for the viscoelasticity of the fluid, there is a considerably more complex set of possible flow regimes than was found in the purely viscous case, and the flows can be classified into five qualitatively different types. Whereas there was only one circulation cell in each hemisphere in the viscous case, accounting for viscoelasticity it is possible have either one, two or three circulation cells, with different senses of rotation, depending on the parameter values.

Taylor–Couette flow is inevitably associated with the visually appealing toroidal vortices, waves, and spirals that are instigated by linear instability. The linearly stable regimes, however, pose a new challenge: do they undergo transition to turbulence and if so, what is its mechanism? Maretzke et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 742, 2014, pp. 254–290) begin to address this question by determining the transient growth over the entire parameter space. They find that in the quasi-Keplerian regime, the optimal perturbations take the form of Taylor columns and that the maximum energy achieved depends only on the shear.

In drop-on-demand inkjet printheads, ink is pumped steadily through small channels, each of which contains an actuator and a nozzle. When an actuator pulses, a droplet is forced through the nozzle, after which acoustic oscillations reverberate within the channel. Manufacturers would like to damp the residual reverberations, without increasing the pressure drop required to drive the steady flow. In this paper we use gradient-based optimization to show that this can be achieved by constricting the channel where the acoustic velocity is largest and enlarging the channel where the acoustic velocity is smallest. This increases the viscothermal dissipation of the acoustics without changing the viscous dissipation of the steady flow. We separate the compressible Navier–Stokes equations into equations for a steady flow with no oscillations and equations for oscillations with no steady flow. We define two objective functions: the viscous dissipation of the steady flow and the dissipation of the oscillations. We then derive the adjoints for both sets of equations, and obtain expressions for the gradient of each objective function with respect to boundary deformations in Hadamard form. We combine these with a gradient-based optimization algorithm, incorporating constraints such as the shapes of the actuator and nozzle. This algorithm quickly converges to a design that has the same viscous dissipation for the steady flow but a 50 % larger decay rate for the oscillating flow. We show that this design is nearly optimal. It is a shape that inkjet manufacturers, using physical insight and trial and error, have probably not yet considered. We also show how the adjoint fields provide physical insight into the mechanisms affecting each objective function. The main requirements of this method are that the steady flow Mach number and oscillating flow Mach number are small, and that dissipation is dominated by thermoviscous mechanisms. These requirements are often satisfied in microfluidics, so the method in this paper could be applied to many other applications.

We describe, by means of asymptotic methods and direct numerical simulation, the structure of singularities developing at the interface between two perfect, inviscid and irrotational fluids of different densities ρ1 and ρ2 and under the action of gravity. When the lighter fluid is on top of the heavier fluid, one encounters the water-wave problem for fluids of different densities. In the limit when the density of the lighter fluid is zero, one encounters the classical water-wave problem. Analogously, when the heavier fluid is on top of the lighter fluid, one encounters the Rayleigh–Taylor problem for fluids of different densities, with this being the case when one of the densities is zero for the classical Rayleigh–Taylor problem. We will show that both water-wave and Rayleigh–Taylor problems develop singularities of the Moore-type (singularities in the curvature) when both fluid densities are non-zero. For the classical water-wave problem, we propose and provide evidence of the development of a singularity in the form of a logarithmic spiral, and for the classical Rayleigh–Taylor problem no singularities were found. The regularizing effects of surface tension are also discussed, and estimates of the size and wavelength of the capillary waves, bubbles or blobs that are produced are provided.

We perform a static analysis of a circular cylinder that forms a barrier between surfactant-laden and surfactant-free portions of a liquid–gas interface. In addition to determining the general implications of the balances for forces and torques, we quantify how the imbalance $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{a}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{b}$ between the uniform surface tension $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{a}$ of the surfactant-free portion of the interface and the uniform surface tension $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{b}$ of the surfactant-laden portion of the interface influences the load-bearing capacity of a hydrophobic cylinder. Moreover, we demonstrate that the difference between surface tensions on either side of a cylinder with a cross-section of arbitrary shape induces a horizontal force component $f^{h}$ equal to $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ in magnitude, when measured per unit length of the cylinder. With an energetic argument, we show that this relation also applies to a rod-like barrier with cross-sections of variable shape. In addition, we apply our analysis to amphiphilic Janus cylinders and we discuss practical implications of our findings for Marangoni propulsion and surface pressure measurements.
