Numerical simulations for flow past a finite rectangular wing with a NACA 0012 section at $Re=1000$ for various semi-aspect ratios ($0.25\le sAR \le 7.5$) over a range of angles of attack ($0^{\circ }\le \alpha \le 14^{\circ }$) reveal streamwise vortices, which increase in strength and number to occupy an increasing spanwise extent with increase in $\alpha$. They result in non-monotonic spanwise variation of local force coefficients and increased strength of wing-tip vortex for $\alpha >8^{\circ }$. Viscous and pressure drag dominate for low and high sAR, respectively. The time-averaged drag coefficient first decreases and then increases with increase in $sAR$. Vortex shedding for $\alpha =14^{\circ }$ is single cell and parallel for $sAR<3$. Shedding is in two cells with an oblique angle that varies with time, leading to large spanwise variation in the root mean square of local force coefficients for higher $sAR$. Various types of dislocations, reported earlier in wakes of bluff bodies, are seen for different $\alpha$ and $sAR$. Dislocations for $\alpha =14^{\circ }$ appear at the same spanwise location for $sAR=3$ and at different spanwise locations for $sAR\ge 4$. Vortex shedding for $\alpha =12^{\circ }$ and $sAR=5$ exhibits one cell structure in the near wake and two cells in the far wake due to splitting and reconnection of vortices near the mid-span in the moderate wake. Linkages form between counter-rotating spanwise vortices for $sAR\ge 1$. Additional linkages between shed- and wing-tip vortices are observed for lower $sAR$. At each $\alpha$, the strength of the wing-tip vortex and radius of its core, estimated using Rankine and Lamb–Oseen models, increases up to a certain $sAR$ beyond which it is approximately constant.

Attenuation and even freeze-out (amplitude growth stagnation) of the perturbation amplitude growth of a shocked SF$_6$–air interface are first realized in shock-tube experiments through reflected rarefaction waves, which produce reverse baroclinic vorticity offsetting the vorticity deposited by the shock. A theoretical model is constructed to predict the perturbation growth after the impact of rarefaction waves, and seven possibilities of amplitude growth are analysed. Experimentally, a planar air–helium interface is used to produce reflected rarefaction waves. Through changing the perturbation wavelength and the time interval of two impacts, five experiments with specific initial conditions are carried out, and three different possibilities of perturbation growth attenuation are realized.

Heat transport over super-hydrophobic (SHS) and liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) is studied using direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow. The lower wall of the channel consists of either longitudinal or transversal bars with a secondary fluid locked in the cavities between the surface elements. We consider two viscosity ratios between the fluids mimicking SHS and LIS. The thermal diffusivity is varied to assess its effect on thermal performance. We investigate the dependence of heat transfer on the elements pitch-to-height ratio and on the interface dynamics. The interface deformation (dependent upon the surface tension between the two fluids) is fully coupled to the fluid governing equations with the level-set method. Present simulations are consistent with published results about the drag-reducing potential of SHS and LIS in turbulent flow compared to the smooth wall. In the limiting case of infinite surface tension (the interface remains flat and slippery), heat transfer efficiency (heat transfer to drag ratio) can be enhanced compared to a smooth wall. Although the total heat flux is marginally reduced, SHS and LIS with longitudinal ridges achieve a comparatively larger drag reduction, which increases the efficiency. A model is derived from the energy equation to correlate the heat transfer performance with the thermal slip length ($b_\theta$), analogous to the streamwise slip length ($b$) used in the literature to scale drag reduction. Consistently with the model, results show that heat transfer efficiency is larger than for a smooth wall when the thermal slip length is smaller than the streamwise slip length (longitudinal bars). Vice versa, transversal bars present $b/b_\theta <1$ and a smaller heat transfer efficiency than the smooth wall. In the case of finite surface tension, the dynamics of the interface generates a turbulent flux which improves the thermal performance, but tends to decrease the amount of drag reduction. Liquid-infused surfaces are more robust than SHS to the deformation of the interface thanks to the larger viscosity of the secondary fluid and maintain about the same drag reduction as in the infinite surface tension case. For SHS longitudinal bars, simultaneous increase in heat transfer and reduction in drag are observed, leading to an apparent breakdown of the Reynolds analogy. Also in the case of finite surface tension, heat transfer efficiency scales with the relative magnitude of the thermal and streamwise slip lengths. The results suggest a potential expansion of the control space for engineers. Depending on the application, one can reach an optimal combination of heat transfer and drag by tuning the shape of the substrate and the viscosity and diffusivity ratios.

The parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) of finite-width internal gravity wave beams is revisited using a formal linear stability analysis based on Floquet theory. The Floquet stability eigenvalue problem is studied asymptotically in the limit where PSI arises, namely for a small-amplitude beam of frequency $\omega$ subject to fine-scale perturbations under nearly inviscid conditions. It is found that, apart from the two dominant subharmonic perturbation components with frequency $\omega /2$, PSI also involves two smaller components with frequency $3\omega /2$, which affect the instability growth rate and were ignored in the earlier models for PSI by Karimi & Akylas (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 757, 2014, pp. 381–402) and Karimi & Akylas (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 2, 2017, 074801). After accounting for these components, the revised PSI models are in excellent agreement with numerical solutions of the Floquet eigenvalue problem. The Floquet stability analysis also reveals that PSI is restricted to a finite range of perturbation wavenumbers: as the perturbation wavenumber is increased (for fixed beam amplitude), higher-frequency components eventually come into play due to the advection of the perturbation by the underlying wave beam, so the components at $\omega /2$ no longer dominate. By adopting a frame riding with the wave beam, this advection effect is factored out and it is shown that small-amplitude beams that are not generally susceptible to PSI may develop an essentially inviscid instability with broadband frequency spectrum.

The flow within an infinitely long cylinder exhibiting solid-body rotation (SBR) is impulsively stopped. The complete decay of the initial SBR is captured by means of direct numerical simulations for a wide range of Reynolds numbers ($Re$). Five distinct stages are identified during the decay process according to their flow structure and their underlying mechanisms of kinetic-energy dissipation. Initially, the laminar boundary layer undergoes a primary centrifugal instability, which causes the formation of coherent Taylor rolls. The flow then becomes turbulent, once the Taylor rolls are corrupted by secondary instabilities. Within the turbulent stage, two phases are distinguished. In the first turbulent phase, the SBR core is still intact and turbulence is sustained. The mean velocity profile is well described by the superposition of a near-wall region, a retracting SBR core and an intermediate region of constant angular momentum. In the latter region, the magnitude of angular momentum in viscous units $l^{+}(Re)$ is approximately constant in time. In the second turbulent phase, the SBR core breaks down, turbulence starts to decay exponentially and the kinetic energy of the mean flow decays logarithmically. Eventually, the flow relaminarises and the velocity profile of the analytical solution for purely laminar decay is recovered, albeit at an earlier temporal instant due to the net effect of transition and turbulence.

The dynamics of flow of a dielectric fluid in a vertical cylindrical annulus with a fixed temperature difference and an increasing alternating electric tension has been investigated using a direct numerical simulation (DNS). The temperature difference imposed on the cylindrical surfaces induces a radial temperature gradient perpendicular to the ground gravity which generates a baroclinic flow ascending near the hot surface and descending near the cold one. The electric field coupled with the permittivity gradient generates a dielectrophoretic buoyancy force which is a source of vorticity. Above a critical value of the electric tension, the flow bifurcates to a pattern of stationary columnar vortices. These columnar vortices which characterize the thermoelectric convection are not axially invariant, in contrast with classical Taylor columns. They bifurcate to regular wave patterns and then to spatio-temporal chaotic patterns when the electric field intensity is increased. The flow and temperature fields, the kinetic energy and the enstrophy of thermoelectric convective regimes are computed for different values of the electric tension.

We investigate the role of inter-scale interactions in the high-Reynolds-number skin-friction drag reduction strategy reported by Marusic et al. (Nat. Commun., vol. 12, 2021). The strategy involves imposing relatively low-frequency streamwise travelling waves of spanwise velocity at the wall to actuate the drag generating outer scales. This approach has proven to be more energy efficient than the conventional method of directly targeting the drag producing inner scales, which typically requires actuation at higher frequencies. Notably, it is observed that actuating the outer scales at low frequencies leads to a substantial attenuation of the major drag producing inner scales, suggesting that the actuations affect the nonlinear inner–outer coupling inherently existing in wall-bounded flows. In the present study, we find that increased drag reduction, through imposition of spanwise wall oscillations, is always associated with an increased coupling between the inner and outer scales. This enhanced coupling emerges through manipulation of the phase relationships between these triadically linked scales, with the actuation forcing the entire range of energy-containing scales, from the inner (viscous) to the outer (inertial) scales, to be more in phase. We also find that a similar enhancement of this nonlinear coupling, via manipulation of the inter-scale phase relationships, occurs with increasing Reynolds number for canonical turbulent boundary layers. This indicates improved efficacy of the energy-efficient drag reduction strategy at very high Reynolds numbers, where the energised outer scales are known to more strongly superimpose and modulate the inner scales. Leveraging the inter-scale interactions, therefore, offers a plausible mechanism for achieving energy-efficient drag reduction at high Reynolds numbers.

In Stokes flow, Purcell's scallop theorem forbids objects with time-reversible (reciprocal) swimming strokes from moving. In the presence of inertia, this restriction is eased and reciprocally deforming bodies can swim. A number of recent works have investigated dimer models that swim reciprocally at intermediate Reynolds numbers ${\textit Re} \approx 1$–1000. These show interesting results (e.g. switches of the swim direction as a function of inertia) but the results vary and seem to be case specific. Here, we introduce a general model and investigate the behaviour of an asymmetric spherical dimer of oscillating length for small-amplitude motion at intermediate ${\textit {Re}}$. In our analysis we make the important distinction between particle and fluid inertia, both of which need to be considered separately. We asymptotically expand the Navier–Stokes equations in the small-amplitude limit to obtain a system of linear partial differential equations. Using a combination of numerical (finite element) and analytical (reciprocal theorem, method of reflections) methods we solve the system to obtain the dimer's swim speed and show that there are two mechanisms that give rise to motion: boundary conditions (an effective slip velocity) and Reynolds stresses. Each mechanism is driven by two classes of sphere–sphere interactions, between one sphere's motion and (1) the oscillating background flow induced by the other's motion, and (2) a geometric asymmetry induced by the other's presence. We can thus unify and explain behaviours observed in other works. Our results show how sensitive, counterintuitive and rich motility is in the parameter space of finite inertia of particles and fluid.

The disturbance flow field for a Mach $6$ flat-plate boundary layer flow with a wall-to-free-stream temperature ratio of $0.5$ is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS), linear stability theory (LST) and biorthogonal decomposition. In the second-mode instability region, the DNS flow field can be reconstructed using a single LST mode, namely $F^+_1$. However, when the supersonic mode emerges, none of the discrete modes nor the continuous branches alone can precisely match the DNS data. A superposition of the pair of discrete supersonic modes $F^\pm _1$ and the slow acoustic continuous spectrum is required to reproduce the disturbance amplitude distributions and the amplification rates observed in the DNS. Another finding is that the supersonic mode $F^-_1$, which should be decaying following LST, in actuality is amplified based on the projected DNS data.

The water surface response to subcritical turbulent flow over a backward-facing step (BFS) is studied via high-resolution large-eddy simulation (LES). The LES method is validated first using data of previously reported experiments. The LES-predicted water surface is decomposed into different types of gravity waves as well as turbulence-driven forced waves. Analysis of the LES data reveals the interplay between low-frequency large-scale turbulence structures, which are the result of flow separation from the step and reattachment behind the step, and the dynamics of the water surface. The water surface deformation is mainly the result of freely propagating gravity waves and forced waves, owing to turbulence in the form of rollers and/or hairpin vortices. Gravity waves with zero group velocity define the characteristic spatial and temporal scales of the surface deformations at higher frequencies, while large eddies determine their low-frequency modulation. These deformations are mainly confined in lateral bands that propagate downstream following the advection of the near-surface streamwise vortices (rollers) that are shed from the step. Steeper surface waves are observed in regions of negative perturbation velocity gradient and down-welling, downstream of the larger rollers, and are associated with thin isolated regions of high vorticity near the surface. The investigation of such a complex flow has shown that the decomposition of the water surface fluctuations into its different physical components may be used to identify the dynamics of the underlying flow structure.

We investigate theoretically, on the basis of the steady Stokes equations for a viscous incompressible fluid, the flow induced by a stokeslet located on the centre axis of two coaxially positioned rigid disks. The stokeslet is directed along the centre axis. No-slip boundary conditions are assumed to hold at the surfaces of the disks. We perform the calculation of the associated Green's function in large parts analytically, reducing the spatial evaluation of the flow field to one-dimensional integrations amenable to numerical treatment. To this end, we formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic problem for the viscous flow surrounding the two disks as a mixed boundary-value problem, which we then reduce to a system of four dual integral equations. We show the existence of viscous toroidal eddies arising in the fluid domain bounded by the two disks, manifested in the plane containing the centre axis through adjacent counter-rotating eddies. Additionally, we probe the effect of the confining disks on the slow dynamics of a point-like particle by evaluating the hydrodynamic mobility function associated with axial motion. Thereupon, we assess the appropriateness of the commonly employed superposition approximation and discuss its validity and applicability as a function of the geometrical properties of the system. Additionally, we complement our semi-analytical approach by finite-element computer simulations, which reveals a good agreement. Our results may find applications in guiding the design of microparticle-based sensing devices and electrokinetic transport in small-scale capacitors.

Boundary-layer transition is accompanied by a significant increase in skin friction whose origin is rigorously explained using the stochastic Lagrangian formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations. This formulation permits the exact analysis of vorticity dynamics in individual realizations of a viscous incompressible fluid flow. The Lagrangian reconstruction formula for vorticity is here extended for the first time to Neumann boundary conditions (Lighthill source). We can thus express the wall vorticity, and, therefore, the wall stress, as the expectation of a stochastic Cauchy invariant in backward time, with contributions from (a) wall vorticity flux (Lighthill source) and (b) interior vorticity that has been evolved by nonlinear advection, viscous diffusion, vortex stretching and tilting. We consider the origin of stress maxima in the transitional region, examining a sufficient number of events to represent the increased skin friction. The stochastic Cauchy analysis is applied to each event to trace the origin of the wall vorticity. We find that the Lighthill source, vortex tilting, diffusion and advection of the outer vorticity make minor contributions. They are less important than spanwise stretching of near-wall spanwise vorticity, which is the dominant source of skin-friction increase during laminar-to-turbulent transition. Our analysis should assist more generally in understanding drag generation and reduction strategies and flow separation in terms of near-wall vorticity dynamics.

We stabilize an open cavity flow experiment to 1 % of its original fluctuation level. For the first time, a multi-modal feedback control is automatically learned for this configuration. The key enabler is automatic in situ optimization of control laws with machine learning augmented by a gradient descent algorithm, named gradient-enriched machine learning control (Cornejo Maceda et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 917, 2021, A42, gMLC). The physical interpretation of the feedback mechanism is assisted by a novel cluster-based control law visualization for the flow dynamics and corresponding actuation commands. Starting points of the control experiment are two unforced open cavity benchmark configurations: a narrow-bandwidth regime with a single dominant frequency and a mode-switching regime where two frequencies compete. The flow is forced by a dielectric barrier discharge actuator located at the leading edge and is monitored by a downstream hot-wire sensor over the trailing edge. The feedback law is optimized with respect to the monitored fluctuation level. As reference, the self-oscillations of the mixing layer are mitigated with steady actuation. Then, a feedback controller is optimized with gMLC. As expected, feedback control outperforms steady actuation by achieving a better amplitude reduction with approximately 1 % of the actuation energy required for similarly effective steady forcing. Intriguingly, optimized laws learned for one regime perform well for the other untested regime as well. The proposed control strategy can be expected to be applicable for many other shear flow experiments.
