In this work, two-phase flows of Newtonian and/or viscoelastic fluids in a ‘cross-slot’ geometry are investigated both experimentally and numerically in the creeping-flow limit. A series of microfluidic experiments – using Newtonian fluids – have been carried out in different cross-section aspect ratios to support our numerical simulations. The numerical simulations rely on a volume of fluid method and make use of a log-conformation formulation in conjunction with the simplified viscoelastic Phan-Thien and Tanner model. Downstream from the central cross, once the flow has become fully developed, we also estimate analytically the thickness of each fluid layer for both two- and three-dimensional cases. In addition to providing a benchmark test for our numerical solver, these analytical results also provide insight into the role of the viscosity ratio. Injecting two fluids with different elastic properties from each inlet arm is shown to be an effective approach to stabilize the purely elastic instability observed in the cross-slot geometry based on the properties of the fluid with the larger relaxation time. Our results show that interfacial tension can also play an important role in the shape of the interface of the two fluids near the free-stagnation point (i.e. in the central cross). By reducing the interfacial tension force, the interface of the two fluids becomes curved and this can consequently change the curvature of streamlines in this region which, in turn, can modify the purely elastic flow transitions. Thus, increasing interfacial tension is shown to have a stabilizing effect on the associated steady symmetry-breaking purely elastic instability. However, at high values of the viscosity ratio, a new time-dependent purely elastic instability arises most likely due to the change in streamline curvature observed under these conditions. Even when both fluids are Newtonian, outside of the two-dimensional limit, a weak instability arises such that the fluid interface in the depth (neutral) direction no longer remains flat.

The effect of a counter-current gas flow on the linear stability of an inclined falling liquid film switches from destabilizing to stabilizing, as the flow confinement is increased. We confront this linear effect with the response of nonlinear surface waves resulting from long-wave interfacial instability. For the strongest confinement studied, the gas flow damps both the linear growth rate and the amplitude of nonlinear travelling waves, and this holds for waves of the most-amplified frequency and for low-frequency solitary waves. In the latter case, waves are shaped into elongated humps with a flat top that resist secondary instabilities. For intermediate confinement, the linear and nonlinear responses are opposed and can be non-monotonic. The linear growth rate of the most-amplified waves first decreases and then increases as the gas velocity is increased, whereas their nonlinear amplitude is first amplified and then damped. Conversely, solitary waves are amplified linearly but damped nonlinearly. For the weakest confinement, solitary waves are prone to two secondary instability modes that are not observed in unconfined falling films. The first involves waves of diminishing amplitude slipstreaming towards their growing leading neighbours. The second causes wave splitting events that lead to a train of smaller, shorter waves.

Numerical simulations for flow past a finite rectangular wing with a NACA 0012 section at $Re=1000$ for various semi-aspect ratios ($0.25\le sAR \le 7.5$) over a range of angles of attack ($0^{\circ }\le \alpha \le 14^{\circ }$) reveal streamwise vortices, which increase in strength and number to occupy an increasing spanwise extent with increase in $\alpha$. They result in non-monotonic spanwise variation of local force coefficients and increased strength of wing-tip vortex for $\alpha >8^{\circ }$. Viscous and pressure drag dominate for low and high sAR, respectively. The time-averaged drag coefficient first decreases and then increases with increase in $sAR$. Vortex shedding for $\alpha =14^{\circ }$ is single cell and parallel for $sAR<3$. Shedding is in two cells with an oblique angle that varies with time, leading to large spanwise variation in the root mean square of local force coefficients for higher $sAR$. Various types of dislocations, reported earlier in wakes of bluff bodies, are seen for different $\alpha$ and $sAR$. Dislocations for $\alpha =14^{\circ }$ appear at the same spanwise location for $sAR=3$ and at different spanwise locations for $sAR\ge 4$. Vortex shedding for $\alpha =12^{\circ }$ and $sAR=5$ exhibits one cell structure in the near wake and two cells in the far wake due to splitting and reconnection of vortices near the mid-span in the moderate wake. Linkages form between counter-rotating spanwise vortices for $sAR\ge 1$. Additional linkages between shed- and wing-tip vortices are observed for lower $sAR$. At each $\alpha$, the strength of the wing-tip vortex and radius of its core, estimated using Rankine and Lamb–Oseen models, increases up to a certain $sAR$ beyond which it is approximately constant.

The description of the feedback mechanism is one of the crucial points in the understanding of self-sustained flow oscillations, such as the edge tone or the cavity tone. In this paper a new model for the edge tone, using linear adjoint modes is proposed for low speeds, when acoustic effects are negligible. The two crucial points of the model are (i) a new relationship between the jet oscillation and the generated vortex at the edge tip and (ii) a new model for the effect of the generated vortex on the oscillation. The frequency corresponding to the optimum open-loop gain of the feedback mechanism was compared with experimental data and good agreement was found.

We describe wall-resolved and wall-modelled large-eddy simulation (LES) of plane Couette (PC) flow. Subgrid-scale (SGS) motion is represented using the stretched-spiral vortex SGS model and the virtual wall model is employed for wall-modelled LES. Cases studied include direct numerical simulation (DNS) at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 220$, wall-resolved LES at $Re_\tau \sim 500\text {--}3600$ and wall-modelled LES at $Re_\tau \sim 3600\text {--}2.8\times 10^{5}$. All LES performed show the presence of approximately spanwise periodic sets of streamwise rolls. Averaged (including spanwise) wall-normal profiles of the mean streamwise velocity show a consistent log region across all Reynolds numbers. Two distinct measures of turbulent intensity are explored, one of which recognizes the roll structure and one that does not. The spanwise variation of turbulence flow metrics is investigated. Mean streamwise velocity profiles show substantial spanwise variation but collapse well when normalized by local skin-friction velocities. Similar collapse is found for streamwise turbulent intensities. For all present LES, the mean skin-friction variation with the plate Reynolds number is found to match a simple analytical form (Pirozzoli et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 758, 2014, pp. 327–343) while the scaled centre-plane, mean-velocity gradient exhibits an inverse ProductLog dependence. Both the mean-flow roll energy and circulation, scaled with outer variables, decrease monotonically for $Re_\tau \gtrsim 500$. At lower $Re_\tau$, the mean streamwise zero-velocity line follows a wavy form in the spanwise direction, while at our larger $Re_\tau$, a mushroom shape emerges which could potentially enhance local momentum transport in the spanwise direction and be responsible for the weakening of the spanwise rolls.

Experiments on divergent Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability at a heavy gas layer are performed in a specially designed shock tube. A novel soap-film technique is extended to generate gas layers with controllable thicknesses and shapes. An unperturbed gas layer is first examined and its two interfaces are found to move uniformly at the early stage and be decelerated later. A general one-dimensional theory applicable to an arbitrary-thickness layer is established, which gives a good prediction of the layer motion in divergent geometry. Then, six kinds of perturbed SF$_6$ layers with various thicknesses and shapes surrounded by air are examined. At the early stage, the amplitude growths of the inner interface for various-thickness layers collapse quite well and also can be predicted by the Bell model for cylindrical RM instability at a single interface, which indicates a negligible interface coupling effect. Later, a rarefaction wave accelerates the inner interface, causing a dramatic rise in the growth rate. It is found that a thicker gas layer will result in a larger extent that the rarefaction wave can promote the instability growth. A modified Bell model accounting for both Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability and interface stretching caused by a rarefaction wave is established, which well reproduces the quick instability growth. At late stages, reverberating waves inside the layer are negligibly weak such that the inner interface growth is dominated by RM instability and RT stability. The major factors driving the outer interface development are a compression wave and interface coupling. A new interface coupling phenomenon existing uniquely in divergent geometry caused by the gradual thinning of the gas layer is observed and also modelled.

Direct numerical simulations employing the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic constitutive model closed with Peterlin's approximation (FENE-P) are used to investigate the far-field region of turbulent planar wakes of viscoelastic fluids and to develop the theory describing these flows. The theoretical results display excellent agreement with the simulations and provide new scaling laws for the evolution of the shear layer thickness $\delta (x) \sim x^{1/2}$, mean velocity deficit ${\rm \Delta} U(x) \sim x^{-1/2}$ and, for very high Deborah numbers, of the maximum polymer shear stresses $\sigma ^{[p]}_c(x) \sim x^{-2}$ and averaged polymer chain extension $\textrm {tr}(\bar {C}(x) - \boldsymbol{\mathsf{I}}) \sim x^{-2}$, where $x$ is the streamwise distance from the solid body generating the wake. The theory is able to show the existence of self-similarity for the profiles of mean velocity, mean polymer shear stress, averaged polymer chain extension and the conditions for similarity of the turbulent shear stress, and is very well supported by the numerical simulations. Similarly to the case of viscoelastic turbulent planar jets (Guimarães et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 899, 2020, p. A11), when the inlet Weissenberg and Deborah numbers are sufficiently large, turbulent viscoelastic wakes exhibit a considerable reduction of the spreading rate and of the normalised Reynolds stresses. However, for very large downstream locations the turbulent viscoelastic wake recovers the classical evolution laws observed for Newtonian turbulent planar wakes.

We use experiments to explore the effect of surfactants on bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) at different scales, considering how the bubbles affect the flow kinetic energy, anisotropy and extreme events. To this end, high-resolution particle shadow velocimetry measurements are carried out in a bubble column in which the flow is generated by bubble swarms rising in water for two different bubble diameters (3 and 4 mm) and moderate gas volume fractions (0.5 %–1.3 %). We use tap water as the base liquid and add 1-Pentanol as an additional surfactant with varying bulk concentration, leading to different bubble shapes and surface boundary conditions. The results reveal that with increasing surfactant concentration, the BIT generated increases in strength, even though bubbles of a given size rise more slowly with surfactants. We also find that the level of anisotropy in the flow is enhanced with increasing surfactant concentration for bubbles of the same size, and that for the same surfactant concentration, smaller bubbles generate stronger anisotropy in the flow. Concerning the intermittency quantified by the normalized probability density functions of the fluid velocity increments, our results indicate that extreme values in the velocity increments become more probable with decreasing surfactant concentration for cases with smaller bubbles and low gas void fraction, while the effect of the surfactant is much weaker for cases with larger bubble and higher void fractions.

We develop a high-fidelity multi-physics model and, by using it, study the energy conversion process of a piezohydroelastic flag. Instead of a regular flag with a clamped upstream leading edge, we use an inverted flag so as to make the best of fluid elastic instability for energy harvesting. Moreover, different from many previous studies where a resistor–capacitor (RC) circuit is usually used, we adopt a resistor–inductor–capacitor (RLC) circuit for electricity generation. The influences of several key parameters associated with fluid, structure and electric dynamics are studied. Significantly different response modes are identified, among which the symmetric- and asymmetric-flutter modes are most suitable for sustainable energy harvesting, both emerging with moderate bending stiffness. If only deploying the RC circuit, increasing the resistance makes the flag more stable. By adding an inductor to turn the RC circuit into an RLC one, we observe the occurrence of ‘lock-in’ between the flag frequency and the circuit frequency as first reported on a regular flag by Xia et al. (Phys. Rev. Appl., vol. 3, 2015, 014009). This phenomenon can significantly enhance the energy output, but it only happens when the circuit resistance is sufficiently large. From a derivation based on dynamic mode decomposition analysis, we further identify an optimal condition for maximizing the energy output, which can serve as a guideline to determine whether deploying an inductor can boost the performance, and, if yes, the required inductance. The findings from this study can better guide the design of flow-induced-vibration-based piezoelectric energy harvesters for microelectronic devices.

Direct numerical simulations are performed for incompressible, turbulent channel flow over a smooth wall and different sinusoidal wall roughness configurations at a constant $Re_\tau = 720$. Sinusoidal walls are used to study the effects of well-defined geometric features of roughness-amplitude, $a$, and wavelength, $\lambda$, on the flow. The flow in the near-wall region is strongly influenced by both $a$ and $\lambda$. Establishing appropriate scaling laws will aid in understanding the effects of roughness and identifying the relevant physical mechanisms. Using inner variables and the roughness function to scale the flow quantities provides support for Townsend's hypothesis, but inner scaling is unable to capture the flow physics in the near-wall region. We provide modified scaling relations considering the dynamics of the shear layer and its interaction with the roughness. Although not a particularly surprising observation, this study provides clear evidence of the dependence of flow features on both $a$ and $\lambda$. With these relations, we are able to collapse and/or align peaks for some flow quantities and, thus, capture the effects of surface roughness on turbulent flows even in the near-wall region. The shear-layer scaling supports the hypothesis that the physical mechanisms responsible for turbulent kinetic energy production in turbulent flows over rough walls are greatly influenced by the shear layer and its interaction with the roughness elements. Finally, a semiempirical model is developed to predict the contribution of pressure and skin friction drag on the roughness element based purely on its geometric parameters and the corresponding shear-layer velocity scale.

From geotechnical applications to space exploration, auger drilling is often used as a standard tool for soil sample collection, instrument installation and others. Focusing on granular flow associated with the rotary drilling process, we investigate the performance of auger drilling in terms of sampling efficiency, defined as the mass ratio of the soil sample collected in the coring tube to its total volume at a given penetration depth, by means of experiments, numerical simulations as well as theoretical analysis. The ratio of rotation to penetration speed is found to play a crucial role in the sampling process. A continuum model for the coupled granular flow in both coring and discharging channels is proposed to elucidate the physical mechanism behind the sampling process. Supported by a comparison with experimental results, the continuum model provides a practical way to predict the performance of auger drilling. Further analysis reveals that the drilling process approaches a steady state with constant granular flow speeds in both channels. In the steady state, sampling efficiency decreases linearly with the growth of the rotation to penetration speed ratio, which can be well captured by the analytical solution of the model. The analytical solution also suggests that the sampling efficiency is independent of gravity in the steady state, which has profound implications for extraterrestrial sample collection in future space missions.

The parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) of finite-width internal gravity wave beams is revisited using a formal linear stability analysis based on Floquet theory. The Floquet stability eigenvalue problem is studied asymptotically in the limit where PSI arises, namely for a small-amplitude beam of frequency $\omega$ subject to fine-scale perturbations under nearly inviscid conditions. It is found that, apart from the two dominant subharmonic perturbation components with frequency $\omega /2$, PSI also involves two smaller components with frequency $3\omega /2$, which affect the instability growth rate and were ignored in the earlier models for PSI by Karimi & Akylas (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 757, 2014, pp. 381–402) and Karimi & Akylas (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 2, 2017, 074801). After accounting for these components, the revised PSI models are in excellent agreement with numerical solutions of the Floquet eigenvalue problem. The Floquet stability analysis also reveals that PSI is restricted to a finite range of perturbation wavenumbers: as the perturbation wavenumber is increased (for fixed beam amplitude), higher-frequency components eventually come into play due to the advection of the perturbation by the underlying wave beam, so the components at $\omega /2$ no longer dominate. By adopting a frame riding with the wave beam, this advection effect is factored out and it is shown that small-amplitude beams that are not generally susceptible to PSI may develop an essentially inviscid instability with broadband frequency spectrum.

We investigate the role of inter-scale interactions in the high-Reynolds-number skin-friction drag reduction strategy reported by Marusic et al. (Nat. Commun., vol. 12, 2021). The strategy involves imposing relatively low-frequency streamwise travelling waves of spanwise velocity at the wall to actuate the drag generating outer scales. This approach has proven to be more energy efficient than the conventional method of directly targeting the drag producing inner scales, which typically requires actuation at higher frequencies. Notably, it is observed that actuating the outer scales at low frequencies leads to a substantial attenuation of the major drag producing inner scales, suggesting that the actuations affect the nonlinear inner–outer coupling inherently existing in wall-bounded flows. In the present study, we find that increased drag reduction, through imposition of spanwise wall oscillations, is always associated with an increased coupling between the inner and outer scales. This enhanced coupling emerges through manipulation of the phase relationships between these triadically linked scales, with the actuation forcing the entire range of energy-containing scales, from the inner (viscous) to the outer (inertial) scales, to be more in phase. We also find that a similar enhancement of this nonlinear coupling, via manipulation of the inter-scale phase relationships, occurs with increasing Reynolds number for canonical turbulent boundary layers. This indicates improved efficacy of the energy-efficient drag reduction strategy at very high Reynolds numbers, where the energised outer scales are known to more strongly superimpose and modulate the inner scales. Leveraging the inter-scale interactions, therefore, offers a plausible mechanism for achieving energy-efficient drag reduction at high Reynolds numbers.

Attenuation and even freeze-out (amplitude growth stagnation) of the perturbation amplitude growth of a shocked SF$_6$–air interface are first realized in shock-tube experiments through reflected rarefaction waves, which produce reverse baroclinic vorticity offsetting the vorticity deposited by the shock. A theoretical model is constructed to predict the perturbation growth after the impact of rarefaction waves, and seven possibilities of amplitude growth are analysed. Experimentally, a planar air–helium interface is used to produce reflected rarefaction waves. Through changing the perturbation wavelength and the time interval of two impacts, five experiments with specific initial conditions are carried out, and three different possibilities of perturbation growth attenuation are realized.

In Stokes flow, Purcell's scallop theorem forbids objects with time-reversible (reciprocal) swimming strokes from moving. In the presence of inertia, this restriction is eased and reciprocally deforming bodies can swim. A number of recent works have investigated dimer models that swim reciprocally at intermediate Reynolds numbers ${\textit Re} \approx 1$–1000. These show interesting results (e.g. switches of the swim direction as a function of inertia) but the results vary and seem to be case specific. Here, we introduce a general model and investigate the behaviour of an asymmetric spherical dimer of oscillating length for small-amplitude motion at intermediate ${\textit {Re}}$. In our analysis we make the important distinction between particle and fluid inertia, both of which need to be considered separately. We asymptotically expand the Navier–Stokes equations in the small-amplitude limit to obtain a system of linear partial differential equations. Using a combination of numerical (finite element) and analytical (reciprocal theorem, method of reflections) methods we solve the system to obtain the dimer's swim speed and show that there are two mechanisms that give rise to motion: boundary conditions (an effective slip velocity) and Reynolds stresses. Each mechanism is driven by two classes of sphere–sphere interactions, between one sphere's motion and (1) the oscillating background flow induced by the other's motion, and (2) a geometric asymmetry induced by the other's presence. We can thus unify and explain behaviours observed in other works. Our results show how sensitive, counterintuitive and rich motility is in the parameter space of finite inertia of particles and fluid.
