Dispersion and mixing of inertial point particles in the unsteady and three-dimensional wake of a circular cylinder at $Re=200$ are investigated via one-way coupled simulations. The presence of streamwise-oriented vortical braids originating from the mode A instability in the transition regime has a profound impact on the particle dynamics and preferential concentration in the near wake. Particles trapped between the Kármán rollers and the streamwise braids form an inner layer of densely concentrated particles, while discrete particle clumps on the otherwise thin ribbon-like clusters between two consecutive Kármán rollers are another manifestation of the streamwise braids. The effect of particle inertia on the size of clusters and voids ascribed to centrifugal ejection is examined by volume-averaged Voronoï analysis. A distinct dependence on Stokes number ($Sk$) is seen at the cluster scale, whereas the void scale exhibits self-similarity. New physics-based threshold values of clusters and voids are distinctly different from the probability-distribution-based threshold at cluster scale. Increasing inertia is found to suppress particle acceleration more than deceleration. The particle velocity is further suppressed by the presence of the streamwise vortical braids. The effects of particle inertia vary non-monotonically in $Sk$ with the strongest effect at $Sk=1$ when most particles tend to reside in high-strain/low-vorticity regions.

Investigated first is the linear stability of a Newtonian ferrofluid centred on a rigid wire, surrounded by another ferrofluid with a different magnetic susceptibility. An electric current runs through the wire, generating an azimuthal magnetic field that produces a magnetic stress at the interface of the fluids. Three-dimensional disturbances to the system are considered, and the linearised Navier–Stokes equations are solved analytically in terms of an implicit expression for the growth rate of the disturbance. The growth rate is found numerically for arbitrary Reynolds number, and given explicitly in the inviscid and Stokes regimes. Investigated next is a ferrofluid whose magnetic susceptibility varies radially, centred on a rigid wire, subject to a non-uniform azimuthal field. It is proven that if the gradient of the susceptibility is positive anywhere in the fluid, then the system is linearly unstable. Moreover, it is proven that applying an axial field can stabilise disturbances for both continuous and discontinuous susceptibilities.

Pressure-gradient-driven flows through sinusoidal channels have been studied. The analysis was carried out up to the formation of secondary nonlinear states and spanned a range of low and moderate Reynolds numbers. Direct numerical simulations were used to identify and determine the properties of steady as well as non-stationary, two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional secondary flows. Our results indicate the existence of several distinct solution types. Two-dimensional, stationary flows with periodicity determined by the corrugation represent the first type. The second type is associated with the appearance of 2-D oscillatory flows arising from the onset of unstable travelling waves. Such oscillatory solutions are generally out of phase with the wall corrugation but could be in phase in special cases determined by the ratio of the critical disturbance wavelength and the channel corrugation wavelength. Consequently, several distinct types of time-dependent solutions are possible. The third type of solution results from the centrifugal effect caused by wall curvature and leads to three-dimensionalization of the flow through the onset of stationary streamwise vortices. Finally, various states resulting from the interaction of different solution types are possible. We examine those states and present a bifurcation diagram illustrating the formation of some of them. The results presented in this paper might help with the development of small-scale flow measurement and detection devices operating at low and moderate Reynolds numbers, as well as in the use of wall topographies for the intensification of mixing in flows with moderate, subturbulent Reynolds numbers.

The formation of step-like ‘density staircase’ distributions induced by stratification and turbulence has been widely studied, and can be explained by the ‘instability’ of a sufficiently strongly stably stratified turbulent flow due to the decrease of the turbulent density flux with increasing stratification via the ‘Phillips mechanism’ (Phillips, Deep Sea Research and Oceanographic Abstracts, vol. 19, 1972, pp. 79–81. Elsevier). However, such density staircases are not often observed in ocean interiors, except in regions where double-diffusion processes are important, leading to thermohaline staircases. Using reduced-order models for the evolution of velocity and density gradients, we analyse staircase formation in stratified and sheared turbulent flows. Under the assumption of inertial scaling $\epsilon \sim U^3/L$ for the kinetic energy dissipation rate $\epsilon$, where $U$ and $L$ are characteristic velocity and length scales, we determine ranges of bulk Richardson numbers ${Ri}_{b}$ and turbulent Prandtl numbers ${Pr}_{T}$ for which staircases can potentially form and show that the Phillips mechanism only survives in the limit of sufficiently small turbulent Prandtl numbers. For relevant oceanic parameters, a range of turbulent Prandtl numbers above which the system is not prone to staircases is found to be ${Pr}_T \simeq 0.5\unicode{x2013}0.8$. Since several studies indicate that the turbulent Prandtl number in stably stratified turbulence and in ocean interiors is usually above this threshold, this result supports the empirical observation that staircases are not favoured in ocean interiors in the presence of relatively homogeneous and sustained turbulence. We also show that our analysis is robust to other scalings for $\epsilon$ (such as the more strongly stratified scaling $\epsilon \sim U^{2}N_{c}$, where $N_{c}$ is a characteristic value of the buoyancy frequency), supporting our results in both shear-dominated and buoyancy-dominated turbulent regimes as well as in weakly and strongly stratified regimes.

Viscous fingering or Saffman–Taylor instability shows fingering interfacial patterns when a more mobile fluid displaces a less mobile one in porous media. The effective interfacial tension (EIT) is like capillary force, acting at the miscible interface on time scales shorter than interface relaxation. It has been numerically reported so far that the fingers are wider with EIT compared with those without EIT. A recent experiment observed finger widening with increasing flow rate in a miscible system with EIT, which is not observed in classical immiscible and miscible systems. In this study, we have numerically investigated the effect of $Pe$ (which corresponds to the injection flow rates in the experiment) on miscible viscous fingering with/without EIT. We have shown that the fingers are monotonically thinner with an increase in $Pe$ in the system without EIT, while finger widening with increasing $Pe$ is observed in the system with EIT. Furthermore, we have also examined a one-dimensional underlying concentration profile and EIT profile by using a one-dimensional diffusion–convection model because EIT is proportional to the squared concentration gradient. We have then shown that the concentration gradient is steeper and, thus, the EIT is larger as $Pe$ is larger. Therefore, this is the first numerical study that can theoretically verify finger widening with increasing flow rate, which occurs only in a miscible system with EIT to the extent of our targeting EIT values, and explain the mechanism by one-dimensional analysis.

The present work aims at clarifying the effects of a solid boundary on the salt fingers in the wall-bounded double diffusive convection turbulence driven by the salinity and temperature differences between the top and bottom plates. The fluid properties are the same as the seawater, and two-dimensional direct numerical simulations are conducted over a wide range of the thermal and salinity Rayleigh numbers which measure the strength of driving salinity difference and stabilising temperature difference. We find that the bulk density ratio $\varLambda _b$, defined by the mean temperature and salinity gradients at the bulk, controls the flow morphology. As $\varLambda _b$ exceeds unity, the bulk flow shifts from wide convection rolls to slender salt fingers. Two different regimes are further identified for the cases of salt-finger type. One is the confined salt-finger regime where the characteristic height of salt fingers is comparable to the bulk height and the influences of the solid boundary are noticeable. The other is the free salt-finger regime where the salt fingers are much shorter than the bulk height. In this latter regime, the transport properties versus $\varLambda _b$ are in quantitative agreement with those obtained in the fully periodic domain (e.g. Traxler et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 677, 2011, pp. 530–553). For a limited range of density ratio at the highest salinity Rayleigh number considered here, multiple states can be obtained from different initial conditions. The large-scale secondary instability and spontaneous formation of staircase from finger layers are not observed in the current study.

The transient growth of a counter-rotating equal strength vortex pair, which descends under mutual induction towards a ground plane, is examined through non-modal linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulation. The vortex pair is studied at a height of five vortex spacing distances above the wall, consistent with the first mode of vortex instability/wall interaction observed by experiment. Three regimes are identified in which the optimal mode topology and non-modal growth mechanisms are distinct, correlated with the widely studied Crow and elliptic instabilities, alongside a wall-modified long-wavelength-displacement-type instability. The initial optimal amplification mechanisms are found to be weakly influenced by the wall, with the long- and short-wave mechanisms consisting of anti-symmetric amplification at the leading hyperbolic point and symmetric amplification at the trailing hyperbolic point, respectively, as observed by out-of-wall studies previously. The linear growth of the Crow instability is found to be impeded by the wall, and the evolution results in the suppression of both the secondary structure formation and vortex rebound. The linear elliptic mode remains largely uninhibited however, and substantially outgrows the long-wave modes, illustrating the importance of the elliptic instability on the wall-bounded interaction. Both the wall-modified long-wave and elliptic optimal growth modes show substantial amplification in the secondary vortices. At finite perturbation amplitudes, the nonlinear formation of both long- and short-wavelength secondary vortex tongues are shown to play a critical role in the vortex dynamics as the pair strongly interacts with the wall.

When two small fluid drops are sufficiently close, the van der Waals force overcomes surface tension and deforms the surfaces into contact, initiating coalescence. The dynamics of surface deformation across an inviscid gap falls into two distinct regimes (Stokes and inertial–viscous) characterized by the forces that balance the van der Waals attraction at leading order (viscosity, and both inertia and viscosity). The previously studied Stokes regime holds for very viscous drops but fails for less viscous drops as inertia becomes significant before contact is reached. We show that the subsequent inertial–viscous dynamics is self-similar as contact is approached, with the gap width decreasing as $t{'^{3/8}}$ and the radial scale of the deformed region decreasing as $t{'^{1/2}}$ as $t{'}\to 0$, for time until contact $t'$. The self-similar behaviour is universal and is the generic asymptotic behaviour observed in time-dependent simulations. The unique self-similar gap profile of the inertial–viscous regime suggests new initial conditions for the coalescence of the drops after contact.

The topology of turbulent coherent structures is known to regulate the transport of energy, mass and momentum in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). While previous research has primarily focused on characterizing the structure of turbulence in stationary ABL flows, real-world scenarios frequently deviate from stationarity, giving rise to nuanced and poorly understood changes in the turbulence geometry and associated transport mechanisms. This study sheds light on this problem by examining topological changes in ABL turbulence induced by non-stationarity and their effects on momentum transport. Results from a large-eddy simulation of pulsatile open channel flow over an array of surface-mounted cuboids are examined. The analysis reveals that the flow pulsation triggers a phase-dependent shear rate, and the ejection-sweep pattern varies with the shear rate during the pulsatile cycle. From a turbulence structure perspective, it is attributed to the changes in the geometry of hairpin vortices. An increase (decrease) in the shear rate intensifies (relaxes) these structures, leading to an increase (decrease) in the frequency of ejections and an amplification (reduction) of their percentage contribution to the total momentum flux. Furthermore, the size of the hairpin packets undergoes variations, which depend on the geometry of the constituting hairpin vortices, yet the packet inclination preserves its orientation throughout the pulsatile cycle. These observations reinforce the important role non-stationarity holds in shaping the structure of ABL turbulence and the momentum transport mechanisms it governs.

Data-driven discovery of governing equations is of great significance for helping us understand intrinsic mechanisms and build physical models. Recently, numerous highly innovative algorithms have emerged, aimed at inversely discovering the underlying governing equations from data, such as sparse regression-based methods and symbolic regression-based methods. Along this direction, a novel dimensional homogeneity constrained gene expression programming (DHC-GEP) method is proposed in this work. The DHC-GEP simultaneously discovers the forms and coefficients of functions using basic mathematical operators and physical variables, without requiring preassumed candidate functions. The constraint of dimensional homogeneity is capable of filtering out the overfitting equations effectively. The key advantages of DHC-GEP compared with the original gene expression programming, including being more robust to hyperparameters, the noise level and the size of datasets, are demonstrated on two benchmark studies. Furthermore, DHC-GEP is employed to discover the unknown constitutive relations of two representative non-equilibrium flows. Galilean invariance and the second law of thermodynamics are imposed as constraints to enhance the reliability of the discovered constitutive relations. Comparisons, both quantitative and qualitative, indicate that the derived constitutive relations are more accurate than the conventional Burnett equations in a wide range of Knudsen numbers and Mach numbers, and are also applicable to the cases beyond the parameter space of the training data.

The behaviour of a fully rough-wall turbulent boundary layer subjected to different pressure gradients is investigated for different Reynolds numbers using hot-wire measurements. Mean velocity and velocity root-mean-square measurements indicate that the boundary layer remains in a self-preserving state regardless of the pressure gradient. However, different pressure gradients lead to different self-preservation states, as suggested by the lack of collapse of the velocity profile between the pressure gradient cases. The results also indicate that the roughness effect is more important than the pressure gradient; particularly, the closer the wall, the more dominant the roughness effect over the pressure gradient effect on the boundary layer. Finally, both spectral and proper orthogonal decomposition analyses applied to the hot-wire measurements indicate that the pressure gradient impacts predominantly the large-scale motion.

The growth with fetch of young wind waves under steady wind forcing that is commonly attributed to shear flow instability results in a spatially inhomogeneous wave field with a spectrum evolving along the tank. The present laboratory study accounts for multiple co-existing statistically stationary random frequency harmonics. Single-point synchronous measurements of the instantaneous surface elevation and of its along-wind slope component are performed by optical methods at numerous locations. Assuming exponential spatial growth, the phase shift between the surface elevation and surface slope at each frequency is related to the spatial growth rate of each harmonic. The validity of the assumption that the wave energy varies exponentially with fetch is examined in a separate set of experiments; the instantaneous surface elevation at various wind-forcing conditions is measured at multiple locations along the tank. The spatial variation of the energy of individual frequency harmonics is determined. It is found that, below the local peak frequency, the energy of each harmonic grows exponentially, while the evolution of waves at frequencies approaching and exceeding the local peak is strongly affected by sheltering by the dominant wave, as well as by nonlinear bound waves. The outcomes of two independent methods of determination of spatial growth rates at a range of young wave frequencies are compared. The accumulated data also enable quantitative analysis of the sheltering phenomenon. The essential difference between the spatial and the temporal wind-wave evolution cases is discussed.

Surface differential heating on a stably stratified fluid body drives an overturning circulation confined to the upper fluid region – here coined stratified horizontal convection (SHC). In this manuscript, we investigate the dynamics of SHC via laboratory experiments, exploring local and global flow properties. By considering the available potential energy of the system, we derive a unique length scale of SHC and introduce the Péclet number $Pe$ that captures both the stabilising effect of stratification and the destabilising effect of the baroclinic adjustment. We found that $Pe$ characterises local and global flow properties, including the fluid transport of the overturning circulation, the available mechanical energy and the flow dimensionality. Our study provides insights into the fluid dynamics of stratified environments that experience horizontal convection, such as lakes, oceans and atmospheres.

This work describes the effects of waves on the hydroelastic response of a hydrofoil in fully wetted and ventilated flows. In the absence of vaporous cavitation (described in Part 2 of this paper series), shallow long-period non-breaking waves delayed ventilation inception because velocity fluctuations prevent the formation of a stably separated region of flow at the foil's leading edge. Aerated von Kármán vortex shedding occurred from the blunt trailing edge, producing vortex-induced vibration of the hydrofoil at a near-constant Strouhal number. Regular waves led to near sinusoidal oscillations of the load and deformations at the wave encounter frequency, while the mean response and the dynamic response at other frequency peaks corresponding to hydrodynamic and structural modes remained mostly unaffected. Significant dynamic load amplification was observed at a submerged aspect ratio of 2 for cases with low angles of attack because of coalescence between the second and third wetted structural modes; at high angles of attack, the amplitude of the load fluctuations and flow-induced vibrations reduced because energy was diverted away from the coalescence frequencies to the nearby vortex shedding frequency. In both calm water and wave conditions, transition from fully wetted to fully ventilated flow resulted in sudden and significant reduction in the load coefficients, as well as foil deflections. An impulse-like signature was observed in the time-frequency spectra during these transitions. In many of the cases, transition to fully ventilated flow also led to substantially reduced amplitudes in the load and deformation fluctuations.

In the present study, the influence of a uniformly moving impinging shock on the resulting shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interaction is numerically investigated. The relative Mach number of the shock front travelling above a flat-plate model varied between 0 and 2.3, while the quasi-steady inflow conditions remained constant with a Mach number of 3. To quantitatively evaluate the effect of shock travelling speed, a well-known scaling method for interaction length in quasi-steady flows was applied as a reference after significant improvements in modelling the effects of Reynolds number and wall temperature using new and existing data. Moreover, previously obtained experimental results for a limited range of travelling speeds were employed to validate the obtained numerical results. Three ranges of shock travelling speeds with distinctly different properties were extracted and quantitatively described using a developed correlation-based approach built on the extended quasi-stationary scaling law. In the first range, the scaled interaction length reaches its maximum for the given interaction strength and can be directly described by the scaling law obtained for quasi-stationary interactions. In the second travelling-speed range, the dependence of the interaction length on the interaction strength is explicitly influenced by the shock movement. With increasing shock travelling speed, the scaled interaction length here decreases significantly faster than in the quasi-stationary reference case. The end of this speed range is reached when the absolute shock front speed has caught up with the maximum speed of sound in the interaction zone, and thus the interaction length has fallen to zero. This travelling-speed limit signifies the transition to the third range, where upstream influence is no longer possible.

Convolutional autoencoders are used to deconstruct the changing dynamics of two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow as $Re$ is increased from weakly chaotic flow at $Re=40$ to a chaotic state dominated by a domain-filling vortex pair at $Re=400$. ‘Latent Fourier analysis’ (Page et al., Phys. Rev. Fluids 6, 2021, p. 034402) reveals a detached class of bursting dynamics at $Re=40$ which merge with the low-dissipation dynamics as $Re$ is increased to $100$ and provides an efficient representation within which to find unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) using recurrent flow analysis. Focusing on initial guesses with energy in higher latent Fourier wavenumbers allows a significant number of high-dissipation-rate UPOs associated with the bursting events to be found for the first time. At $Re=400$, the UPOs discovered at lower $Re$ move away from the attractor, and an entirely different embedding structure is formed within the network devoid of small-scale vortices. Here latent Fourier projections identify an associated ‘large-scale’ UPO which we believe to be a finite-$Re$ continuation of a solution to the Euler equations.
