The diffusiophoresis of charged hydrophobic nanoparticles (NPs) governed by an imposed ionic concentration gradient is analysed. The main objective is to elucidate the impact of the laterally mobile adsorbed surface ions at the interface on the propulsion of the hydrophobic NPs in diffusiophoresis. In addition, the dielectric polarization due to the difference in dielectric constant between the NPs and the suspension medium is also considered. The mobile surface ions create a friction as well as an electric force at the hydrophobic surface, which leads to a modification of the slip velocity condition and the slip length. We obtain an exact numerical solution of the governing electrokinetic equations in their full form by adopting a control volume formulation. The numerical model is supplemented by analytical solutions derived based on the Debye–Hückel linearization. We find that the lateral mobility of the surface ions obstruct the coions to diffuse from the higher concentration side to the lower concentration side, which results in a repulsive force to the particle leading to the occurrence of a negative mobility. Based on the numerical results and analytical solutions, we have shown that for a fully mobile surface charge, the diffusiophoresis of a hydrophobic NP is identical to the diffusiophoresis of a liquid droplet whose viscosity is related to the slip length of the hydrophobic particle. We establish that the dielectric polarization enhances the velocity of a hydrophobic particle, which has potential applications in the practical context.

Earthquakes are a great challenge for the safety of nuclear reactors. To address this challenge, we need to better understand how the reactor core responds to seismic forcing. The reactor core is made of fuel assemblies, which are themselves composed of flexible fuel rods immersed in a strong axial flow. This gives rise to strongly coupled fluid–structure interactions whose accurate modelling generally requires high computational costs. In this paper, we introduce a new model able to capture the mechanical response of the reactor core subjected to seismic forcing with low computational costs. This model is based on potential flow theory for the fluid part, and Euler–Bernoulli beam theory for the structural part, allowing us to predict the response to seismic forcing in presence of axial flow. The linear equations are solved in the Fourier space to decrease computational time. For validation purposes, first we use the proposed model to compute the response of a single cylinder in axial flow. We then implement a multiple-cylinder geometry made of four fuel assemblies, each made of $8\times 8$ cylinders, corresponding to an experimental facility available at CEA. The comparison between numerical results and experiments shows good agreement. The model can predict correctly the added mass. It can also capture qualitatively the coupling between assemblies and the effect of confinement. This shows that a potential flow approach can give insight into the complex fluid–structure interactions within a nuclear reactor and, in particular, be used to predict the response to seismic forcing at low computational cost.

Fast agglomeration by emulsion binders to capture fine, hydrophobic particles has been developed in the past few years as an alternative to froth flotation by small air bubbles. This new method consists of mixing a particle suspension and saltwater-filled droplets covered with semi-permeable oil layers. These droplets expand due to an osmotic flux of water caused by the presence of salt inside the droplets. To better understand the physics underlying this novel particle capture method, we investigate binary interactions between droplets and particles. The current work examines the dynamics of a rigid spherical particle and a semi-permeable spherical drop that expands due to osmosis in an external, pure-extensional flow field. The droplet is governed by an expansion-diffusion problem, which is coupled to the set of dynamical equations governing the relative particle trajectory. By performing multiple trajectory simulations, we calculate transient collision efficiencies, which can be used to determine the collision kernel for population dynamics. We also use these simulations to better understand the evolution of the microstructure by determining the transient behaviour of the pair distribution function. Our results indicate that the presence of drop expansion increases the collision efficiency of the system, especially for very small particles, which are the most difficult to capture by froth flotation. Moreover, although the presence of slow salt diffusion inside the drops can mitigate this improvement, the contribution of expansion to the collision efficiency may still be considerable, even in the absence of hydrophobic or other attractive forces.

We derive and investigate numerically a reduced model for wave–vortex interactions involving non-dispersive waves, which we study in a two-dimensional shallow water system with an eye towards applications in atmosphere–ocean fluid dynamics. The model consists of a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations for the Lagrangian-mean velocity and the wave-related pseudomomentum vector field defined in generalized Lagrangian-mean theory. It allows for two-way interactions between the waves and the balanced flow that is controlled by the distribution of Lagrangian-mean potential vorticity, and for strong solutions it features a desirable exact energy conservation law for the sum of wave energy and mean flow energy. Our model goes beyond standard ray tracing as we can derive weak solutions that contain discontinuities in the pseudomomentum field, using the theory of weakly hyperbolic systems. This allows caustics to form without predicting infinite wave amplitudes, as would be the case in the standard ray-tracing theory. Suitable wave forcing and dissipation terms are added to the model and a numerical scheme for the model is implemented as a coupled set of pseudo-spectral and finite-volume integrators. Idealized examples of interactions between wavepackets and simple vortex structures are presented to illustrate the model dynamics. The unforced and non-dissipative simulations suggest a heuristic rule of ‘greedy’ waves, i.e. in the long run the wave field always extracts energy from the mean flow.

This paper studies the instability of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic systems on a sphere using analytical methods. The underlying flow consists of a zonal differential rotation and a toroidal magnetic field is present. Semicircle rules that prescribe the possible domain of the wave velocity in the complex plane for general flow and field profiles are derived. The paper then sets out an analytical study of the ‘clamshell instability’, which features field lines on the two hemispheres tilting in opposite directions (Cally, Sol. Phys., vol. 199, 2001, pp. 231–249). An asymptotic solution for the instability problem is derived for the limit of weak shear of the zonal flow, via the method of matched asymptotic expansions. It is shown that when the zonal flow is solid body rotation, there exists a neutral mode that tilts the magnetic field lines, referred to as the ‘tilting mode’. A weak shear of the zonal flow excites the critical layer of the tilting mode, which reverses the tilting direction to form the clamshell pattern and induces the instability. The asymptotic solution provides insights into properties of the instability for a range of flow and field profiles. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic field affects the instability only through its local behaviour in the critical layer.

One of the most dramatic effects of vibrational and chemical non-equilibrium in hypersonic flows occurs in the bow-shock detachment process in flow over a wedge. This was shown theoretically and in reflected shock tunnel experiments by Hornung & Smith (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 93, 1979, pp. 225–239). In the present work, the effect is first demonstrated by computation of two-dimensional non-equilibrium flows. The effect of the finite transverse extent of the wedge is then studied by three-dimensional computations of non-relaxing flows. An analytical formula is obtained that gives the shock detachment distance of a finite wedge for ideal-gas and equilibrium flows. In the experiment, the finite transverse extent of the wedge competes with the non-equilibrium effects, as each introduces a new length scale. The carbon dioxide and nitrogen flows of the experiment are therefore computed in three dimensions and with two-temperature chemistry accounting for vibrational and chemical non-equilibrium. In the case of nitrogen flow, the agreement between experiment and computation is not good, the experimental detachment distance being larger. A number of possible reasons are quantitatively examined. A conclusive resolution of the discrepancy is considered to require a repeat of the experiment with more accurately characterized conditions. In the case of the carbon dioxide experiments, the computed results agree remarkably well with experiment. This is partially due to the fact that the condition is very close to equilibrium, where the sensitivity of the detachment process to relaxation effects is small. The analytical expression for the dimensionless detachment distance agrees very well with all the three-dimensional computations of non-relaxing flows.

Shock-containing supersonic jets undergoing resonance processes are challenging from both a measurement and simulation perspective. These jets are host to a broad range of complex fluid phenomena: intense acoustic waves, turbulence, wavepackets and strong shock waves. Strong shocks present a challenge to both the experimental and numerical researcher. In the paper of Léon et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A36), a novel optical technique based on multi-axis digital holographic interferometry is applied to the study of a highly underexpanded screeching jet, producing density measurements of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Where prior studies have been restricted to extrapolating the three-dimensional field from two-dimensional slices or projections, in this work the authors directly measure the three-dimensional helical structure of the wavepacket associated with jet screech.

Gas–liquid coaxial injectors invariably involve a shear layer between a fast-moving gas stream and a slow-moving liquid stream. This shear layer within the confinement of a recess has a region of absolute instability beyond a critical momentum flux ratio. This causes the spray to exhibit self-pulsation at discrete natural frequencies. We apply sinusoidal acoustic forcing to the gas jet over a range of frequencies and amplitudes to explore the frequency response of the spray. The fluctuating spray width near the injector orifice is measured as a time-resolved tracer characteristic, and its power spectral density is used to determine the spectral response of the spray. The non-pulsating spray that involves a primarily convectively unstable shear layer responds unconditionally to all the forcing frequencies. However, for a self-pulsating spray, when the forcing frequency is far from the natural frequency and both are incommensurate, the spectral response involves both the frequencies, their linear combinations and harmonics representing a state of quasi-periodicity. When the forcing frequency is close enough or the amplitude is high enough, 1 : 1 lock-in is observed where the natural mode is suppressed completely and the spray behaves just like the unforced flow with the peak shifted to the forcing frequency. Combining the experimental observations and application of the van der Pol oscillator model, we could demonstrate the analogous behaviour of this multiphase system with other hydrodynamically self-excited systems with external forcing. The results presented here can prove significant in understanding the dynamics of the atomization process in thermoacoustic coupling and possible control of it.

We investigate theoretically and numerically the impact of an elastic sphere on a rigid wall in a viscous fluid. Our focus is on the dynamics of the contact, employing the soft lubrication model in which the sphere is separated from the wall by a thin liquid film. In the limit of large sphere inertia, the sphere bounces and the dynamics is close to the Hertz theory. Remarkably, the film thickness separating the sphere from the wall exhibits non-trivial self-similar properties that vary during the spreading and retraction phases. Leveraging these self-similar properties, we establish the energy budget and predict the coefficient of restitution for the sphere. The general framework derived here opens many perspectives to study the lubrication film in impact problems.

Shock buffet on wings is a phenomenon caused by strong shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction resulting first in self-sustained flow unsteadiness and eventually in a detrimental structural response called buffeting. While it is an important aspect of wing design and aircraft certification, particularly for modern transonic air transport, not all of the underlying multidisciplinary physics is thoroughly understood. Building upon a single-discipline shock-buffet stability study, this work now investigates the impact of an elastic structure in these extreme flow conditions. Specifically, a triglobal stability analysis of a fluid–structure coupled system is presented, utilising the implicitly restarted Arnoldi method with a sparse iterative Krylov solver and novel preconditioner. Asymmetry resulting from a static aeroelastic simulation based on a finite-element model of the underlying geometry in a wind tunnel modifies the global modes of the earlier fluid-only symmetric full-span analysis. A flutter stability analysis at wind-tunnel flow conditions below shock-buffet onset finds no instability in the structural degrees-of-freedom, whereas in shock-buffet flow with globally unstable fluid modes additional marginally unstable structural (and fluid) modes emerge. The developed stability tool for coupled analysis is instrumental in identifying those physically relevant and strongly coupled modes where a standard pk-type (p being eigenvalue and k reduced frequency) flutter analysis fails. With the complementary computation of adjoint eigenmodes, the core of the instability is pinpointed to a relatively small wing area which may help to effect the control and delay of this detrimental transonic unsteadiness. We contribute to the question on how the presence of the elastic wing structure impacts on the otherwise pure aerodynamic three-dimensional shock-buffet dynamics.

We present experimental evidence of multifractality and scale-free network topology in a noise-perturbed laminar jet operated in a globally stable regime, prior to the critical point of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and prior to the saddle-node point of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. For both types of bifurcation, we find that (i) the degree of multifractality peaks at intermediate noise intensities, (ii) the conditions for peak multifractality produce a complex network whose node degree distribution obeys an inverse power-law scaling with an exponent of $2 < \gamma < 3$, indicating scale-free topology and (iii) the Hurst exponent and the global clustering coefficient can serve as early warning indicators of global instability under specific operating and forcing conditions. By characterising the noise-induced dynamics of a canonical shear flow, we demonstrate that the multifractal and scale-free network dynamics commonly observed in turbulent flows can also be observed in laminar flows under certain stochastic forcing conditions.

Numerical analysis of a steady monatomic gas flow about the point of the regular reflection of a strong oblique shock wave from the symmetry plane is conducted with the Navier–Stokes–Fourier (NSF) equations, the regularized Grad 13-moment (R13) equations and the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In contrast to the inviscid solution to this problem completely defined by the Rankine–Hugoniot (RH) relations, all three models predict a complicated flow structure with strong thermal non-equilibrium and a long wake with flow parameters not predicted by the RH relations. The temperature $T_y$ related to thermal motion of molecules in the direction normal to the symmetry plane has a maximum inside the reflection zone while in a planar shock wave the maximum is observed for the $T_x$ temperature. The R13 equations predict these features much better than the NSF equations and are in good agreement with the benchmark DSMC results. An analysis of the flow with the conservation equations was conducted in order to evaluate the effects of various processes on a fluid element moving along the symmetry plane. In contrast to the shock wave where effects of viscosity and heat conduction are one-dimensional with zeroth net contribution to the fluid-element energy across the shock, the flow across the zone of the shock reflection is dominated by two-dimensional effects with positive net contribution of viscosity and negative contribution of heat conduction to the fluid-element energy. These effects are believed to be the main source of the wake with parameters deviating from the RH values.

A numerical investigation of turbulent flows in straight pipes with a cross-section in the form of a circular sector at different values of the apex angle ${\alpha }$ is carried out. Main attention is paid to the cases ${\alpha }>{\rm \pi}$ when the cross-section boundary contains a convex external corner. An analytical solution to the problem of laminar flow in the geometry under consideration is given. The law of resistance is determined, and velocity distributions over the pipe cross-section are obtained. The singularity of wall shear stress $\tau _w\sim r^{{\rm \pi} /{\alpha }-1}$ at ${\alpha }>{\rm \pi}$ is shown which persists in turbulent flows as well. Turbulent flows are simulated at $Re=2000$ and four apex-angle values ${\alpha }=5{\rm \pi} /4$, $3{\rm \pi} /2$, $7{\rm \pi} /4$ and $2{\rm \pi}$, as well as at a larger $Re=4000$ and ${\alpha }=3{\rm \pi} /2$. The characteristic features of the mean-velocity distributions are outlined, and their relationship with secondary flows is shown. The velocity of the secondary flow in the vicinity of the external corner reaches the value $6.3\,\%$ of the bulk flow velocity at the maximum ${\alpha }=2{\rm \pi}$. A characteristic feature of the considered flows is the presence of intense transverse velocity fluctuations in the region above the apex corner. It is hypothesized that the cause of these fluctuations may be the linear instability of the mean flow field. The studies of linear stability confirm this hypothesis. Considerable attention is paid to the study of secondary flows in the vicinity of the external corner. In general, the formation of these flows fits into the scheme proposed earlier (Nikitin, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 917, 2021, A24; Nikitin et al., Fluid Dyn., vol. 56, issue 4, 2021, pp. 513–538), according to which the main mechanism is the centrifugal force arising from the fluctuating flow over the corner in the transverse plane. It is shown that the shape of secondary flows is reproduced to a certain extent by the vortical part of the Reynolds-stress force field. The latter may be found from the Helmholtz decomposition. The features of the mean pressure distribution associated with the secondary flow and with the presence of a region of concentrated fluctuations above the external corner are explained.

The statistics of breaking wave fields are characterised within a novel multi-layer framework, which generalises the single-layer Saint-Venant system into a multi-layer and non-hydrostatic formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations. We simulate an ensemble of phase-resolved surface wave fields in physical space, where strong nonlinearities, including directional wave breaking and the subsequent highly rotational flow motion, are modelled, without surface overturning. We extract the kinematics of wave breaking by identifying breaking fronts and their speed, for freely evolving wave fields initialised with typical wind wave spectra. The $\varLambda (c)$ distribution, defined as the length of breaking fronts (per unit area) moving with speed $c$ to $c+{\rm d}c$ following Phillips (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 156, 1985, pp. 505–531), is reported for a broad range of conditions. We recover the $\varLambda (c) \propto c^{-6}$ scaling without wind forcing for sufficiently steep wave fields. A scaling of $\varLambda (c)$ based solely on the root-mean-square slope and peak wave phase speed is shown to describe the modelled breaking distributions well. The modelled breaking distributions are in good agreement with field measurements and the proposed scaling can be applied successfully to the observational data sets. The present work paves the way for simulations of the turbulent upper ocean directly coupled to a realistic breaking wave dynamics, including Langmuir turbulence, and other sub-mesoscale processes.
