We explore the three-dimensional interaction of higher acoustic modes with bias-flow perforated liners in cylindrical and annular ducts. Pressure fluctuations in the vicinity of the liners excite the production and shedding of vorticity from the rims of apertures in the liners. An effective liner compliance is used which accounts for this transfer of acoustical into vortical energy. The investigation is facilitated by a Green's function solution of the Helmholtz equation in a lined section of duct, allowing calculation of the amplitudes of exiting wave modes due to incoming acoustic disturbances. A system containing an arbitrary number of concentric liners and the hollow cavities formed between them can be modelled. The results for an incident plane wave are compared with those from our previously developed one-dimensional model, with excellent agreement. We demonstrate that results for all modes that travel parallel to the liner, including higher circumferential modes in narrow annular gaps, exhibit self-similar behaviour, and that liner design rules developed for planar duct modes can be adapted accordingly. The acoustic absorption can be strongly enhanced by downstream duct reflection for wavelengths larger than twice the liner length, but is less affected at higher frequencies that allow persistent pressure minima along the liner. Across larger frequency ranges, the liner systems are shown to permit two types of resonance associated with the duct and the cavities, respectively, and a third of Helmholtz type, associated with the system as a whole. The effect of these resonances on incident modes is demonstrated, and, in particular, we explore their enhancement of acoustic absorption.

The presence of the free surface adds an element of difficulty to the development of numerical and theoretical methods for the performance prediction of surface-piercing hydrofoils. Existing methods of analysis for two-dimensional surface-piercing hydrofoils or blade sections of a surface-piercing propeller solve either a linear problem, assuming a thin section and ventilated surface along with linear free-surface boundary conditions, or a nonlinear problem in a self-similar setting. Both these approaches cannot be used when the effects of gravity are important, which is the case when a craft is operating at low speeds. A two-dimensional boundary-element-method-based numerical scheme is presented here that overcomes these drawbacks by solving the fully ventilated flow past a surface-piercing hydrofoil of finite dimensions and includes the whole gamut of nonlinear free-surface interactions. The unique aspect of the numerical scheme is that fully nonlinear boundary conditions are applied on the free surface which allows for the accurate modelling of the jet generated on the wetted boundary and the ventilated surface formed on the suction side as a result of the passage of the hydrofoil through the free surface. Moreover, the effects of gravity can be considered to take into account the influence of the Froude number. Ventilated-surface shapes predicted by the present scheme are compared with existing experimental results and are shown to be in good agreement.

The drag on a sphere in a random array of fixed spheres of volume concentration c ([Lt ] 1) at Reynolds number R ([Lt ] 1) is discussed. In the case when c and R2 are of the same order of magnitude, the drag is determined up to terms of O(R).

A spectral scheme is developed to study the mass transport in three-dimensional water waves where the steady flow is assumed to be periodic in two horizontal directions. The velocity–vorticity formulation is adopted for the numerical solution, and boundary conditions for the vorticity are derived to enforce the no-slip conditions. The numerical scheme is used to calculate the mass transport under two intersecting wave trains; the resulting flow is reminiscent of the Langmuir circulation patterns. The scheme is then applied to study the steady flow in a three-dimensional standing wave.

Numerical solutions are presented for steady, axisymmetric, laminar, isothermal, source–sink flow in a rotating cylindrical cavity. These results, which are in good agreement with previously published experimental work, have been used to give a fresh insight into the nature of the flow and to investigate the validity of other theoretical solutions. When the fluid enters the cavity through a central uniform radial source and leaves through an outer sink, it is shown that the flow near the disks can be approximated by two known analytical solutions. If the radial source is replaced by an axial inlet the flow becomes more complex, with a wall jet forming on the downstream disk at sufficiently high flow rates.

A theory is developed for time-dependent coherent structures in a marginally stable atmospheric zonal flow. The coherent structures have the form of solitary waves travelling in the zonal direction. Analytical solutions are found for stationary solitary waves but these are shown to be always unstable. The instability manifests itself either as a fission of the structure subsequently emitting two oppositely directed travelling solitary waves or as an implosion in which the structure becomes increasingly more narrow and intense. Which of the two occurs depends sensitively on initial conditions. These solitary waves are stable in head-on collisions only if their joint zonally integrated amplitude is less than a critical value; otherwise, the implosion instability occurs. General initial conditions can give rise to solitary waves which either split, implode, or break down to form a train of nonlinear wave packets. A scenario for the birth and decay of isolated disturbances is given, utilizing the slow parametric transit of the marginal stability curve of the background zonal flow.

We demonstrate the existence of a chaotic invariant set of solutions of an idealized model for wind-forced quasi-geostrophic flow over a continental margin with variable topography. The model (originally formulated to investigate mean flow generation by topographic wave drag) has bottom topography that slopes linearly offshore and varies sinusoidally alongshore. The alongshore topographic scales are taken to be short compared to the cross-shelf scale, allowing Hart's (1979) quasi-two-dimensional approximation, and the governing equations reduce to a non-autonomous system of three coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. For weak (constant plus time-periodic) forcing and weak friction, we apply a recent extension (Wiggins & Holmes 1987) of the method of Melnikov (1963) to test for the existence of transverse homoclinic orbits in the model. The inviscid unforced equations have two constants of motion, corresponding to energy E and enstrophy M, and reduce to a one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system which, for a range of values of the constant G = E − M, has a pair of homoclinic orbits to a hyperbolic saddle point. Weak forcing and friction cause slow variations in G, but for a range of parameter values one saddle point is shown to persist as a hyperbolic periodic orbit and Melnikov's method may be applied to study the perturbations of the associated homoclinic orbits. In the absence of time-periodic forcing, the hyperbolic periodic orbit reduces to the unstable fixed point that occurs with steady forcing and friction. The method yields analytical expressions for the parameter values for which sets of chaotic solutions exist for sufficiently weak time-dependent forcing and friction. The predictions of the perturbation analysis are verified numerically with computations of Poincaré sections for solutions in the stable and unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic periodic orbit and with computations of solutions for general initial-value problems. In the presence of constant positive wind stress τ0 (equatorward on eastern ocean boundaries), chaotic solutions exist when the ratio of the oscillatory wind stress τ1 to the bottom friction parameter r is above a critical value that depends on τ0/r and the bottom topographic height. The analysis complements a previous study of this model (Samelson & Allen 1987), in which chaotic solutions were observed numerically for weak near-resonant forcing and weak friction.

The nonlinear temporal-spatial modulation of a near-planar Rayleigh instability wave is studied. The amplitude of the wave is allowed to be a slowly varying function of spanwise position as well as of time (or streamwise variable in the spatial evolution case). It is shown that the development of the disturbance is controlled by critical-layer nonlinear effects when the linear growth rate decreases to O(ε⅖), where ε is the magnitude of the disturbance. Nonlinear interactions influence the evolution by producing spanwise dependent mean-flow distortions. The evolution is governed by an integro-partial-differential equation containing history-dependent nonlinear terms of Hickernell (1984) type. A notable feature of the amplitude equation is that the highest derivative with respect to spanwise position appears in the nonlinear terms. These terms are associated with three-dimensionality. The possible properties of the amplitude equation are discussed. Numerical solutions show that a disturbance initially centred at a spanwise position can propagate laterally to form concentrated, quasi-periodic streamwise vortices. This qualitatively captures the phenomena observed in experiments. The focusing of vorticity may be associated with a localized singularity which can occur at a finite distance downstream or within a finite time. It is noted that the amplitude equation is rather generic and applies to a broad class of shear flows which is inviscidly unstable.

The hydrodynamic stability is examined of liquids in which the viscosity varies with distance below a free surface. It is assumed that the viscosity becomes indefinitely large with distance from the surface, and that there is an ‘effective depth’ within which most of the motion occurs; but, otherwise, the viscosity distribution is arbitrary. The particular cases of wave-generation by a concurrent air flow at a horizontal liquid surface, and the stability of inclined flow under gravity are treated. It is shown that instabilities may occur which are similar to those known for thin uniform liquid films.

We address the problem of the potential motion of an ideal incompressible fluid with a free surface and infinite depth in a two-dimensional geometry. We admit the presence of gravity forces and surface tension. A time-dependent conformal mapping $z(w,t)$ of the lower complex half-plane of the variable $w$ into the area filled with fluid is performed with the real line of $w$ mapped into the free fluid’s surface. We study the dynamics of singularities of both $z(w,t)$ and the complex fluid potential $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}(w,t)$ in the upper complex half-plane of $w$. We show the existence of solutions with an arbitrary finite number $N$ of complex poles in $z_{w}(w,t)$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{w}(w,t)$ which are the derivatives of $z(w,t)$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}(w,t)$ over $w$. We stress that these solutions are not purely rational because they generally have branch points at other positions of the upper complex half-plane. The orders of poles can be arbitrary for zero surface tension while all orders are even for non-zero surface tension. We find that the residues of $z_{w}(w,t)$ at these $N$ points are new, previously unknown, constants of motion, see also Zakharov & Dyachenko (2012, authors’ unpublished observations, arXiv:1206.2046) for the preliminary results. All these constants of motion commute with each other in the sense of the underlying Hamiltonian dynamics. In the absence of both gravity and surface tension, the residues of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{w}(w,t)$ are also the constants of motion while non-zero gravity $g$ ensures a trivial linear dependence of these residues on time. A Laurent series expansion of both $z_{w}(w,t)$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{w}(w,t)$ at each poles position reveals the existence of additional integrals of motion for poles of the second order. If all poles are simple then the number of independent real integrals of motion is $4N$ for zero gravity and $4N-1$ for non-zero gravity. For the second-order poles we found $6N$ motion integrals for zero gravity and $6N-1$ for non-zero gravity. We suggest that the existence of these non-trivial constants of motion provides an argument in support of the conjecture of complete integrability of free surface hydrodynamics in deep water. Analytical results are solidly supported by high precision numerics.

In this paper we look at the problem of an undular bore entering still water. The effect of the boundary-layer at the channel bottom is considered. The motion is assumed to be laminar and inviscid, apart from the thin boundary layer, where the normal boundary-layer approximations are used to find the velocity components. The effect on the main flow then appears in the equations of motion as a shear stress.

Considered below is the plane, high-Reynolds-number (Re), flow of an incompressible fluid through a channel suffering a severe non-symmetric constriction, ‘severe’ meaning ‘of typical dimensions comparable with the channel width a*’. The (mainly inviscid) flow description is governed by free streamline theory, to be consistent with the viscous incompressible separation from the constriction surface and with a relatively slow eddy motion beyond. Separation also occurs far ahead of the constriction, at a distance $O(Re^{\frac{1}{7}} a^{*})$ upstream. Attention is given primarily to the flow features for a particular class of slowly varying severe constrictions, from which however the features for the probably more useful classes of slender (i.e. of large length but O(a*) height) and moderately severe (i.e. of O(a*) length but small height) constriction follow, as do those for curved or cornered channel flows. In all these cases a long-scale flow response is induced upstream and downstream and in many cases remarkably simple universal formulae for the separation and reattachment positions result. The corresponding O(a*) corrections to the upstream separation distance above are also derived.

Adiabatic disturbances propagating as transverse waves in an inviscid fluid rotating as a Rankine vortex about the axis of its cylindrical container are considered. The propagation of the first mode of the first two harmonic waves has been investigated. Relative to a fixed co-ordinate system, for each harmonic, there are three waves. Two waves are rotating in the same direction as the fluid, one faster and the other slower than the core of the fluid, and one wave rotates in the opposite direction. The latter is stable and relative to the core of the rotating fluid it is the fastest wave. Relative to the container, the other two waves are speeded up by rotation. However, relative to the rotating core, the angular velocity of the fast wave decreases when the fluid is speeded up, and when it is zero the wave breaks down. As the region of potential flow decreases the angular velocity of the slow wave increases and its amplitude decreases, and in the limit of vanishing potential flow, the wave rotates as fast as the fluid and its amplitude tends to zero.

The onset of thermal convection in a finite rotating cylinder is investigated using direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations with the Boussinesq approximation in a regime in which spatio-temporal complexity is observed directly after onset. The system is examined in the non-physical limit of zero centrifugal force as well as with an experimentally realizable centrifugal force, leading to two different paths to Küppers–Lortz-like spatio-temporal chaos. In the idealized case, neglecting centrifugal force, the onset of convection occurs directly from a conduction state, resulting in square patterns with slow roll switching, followed at higher thermal driving by straight roll patterns with faster roll switching. The case with a centrifugal force typical of laboratory experiments exhibits target patterns near the theoretically predicted onset of convection, followed by a rotating wave that emerges via a Hopf bifurcation. A subsequent Hopf bifurcation leads to ratcheting states with sixfold symmetry near the axis. With increasing thermal driving, roll switching is observed within the ratcheting lattice before Küppers–Lortz-like spatio-temporal chaos is observed with the dissolution of the lattice at a slightly stronger thermal driving. For both cases, all of these states are observed within a 2% variation in the thermal driving.

When traditional linearized theory is used to study gravity–capillary waves produced by flow past an obstruction, the geometry of the object is assumed to be small in one or several of its dimensions. In order to preserve the nonlinear nature of the obstruction, asymptotic expansions in the low-Froude-number or low-Bond-number limits can be derived, but here, the solutions invariably predict a waveless surface at every order. This is because the waves are in fact, exponentially small, and thus beyond-all-orders of regular asymptotics; their formation is a consequence of the divergence of the asymptotic series and the associated Stokes Phenomenon. By applying techniques in exponential asymptotics to this problem, we have discovered the existence of new classes of gravity–capillary waves, from which the usual linear solutions form but a special case. In this paper, we present the initial theory for deriving these waves through a study of gravity–capillary flow over a linearized step. This will be done using two approaches: in the first, we derive the surface waves using the standard method of Fourier transforms; in the second, we derive the same result using exponential asymptotics. Ultimately, these two methods give the same result, but conceptually, they offer different insights into the study of the low-Froude-number, low-Bond-number problem.

In this work the thermocapillary-induced motion of partially engulfed compound drops is considered. This phenomenon occurs in many natural and technological processes in which heat is exchanged between such hybrid drops and the medium around them through the interfaces. Two types of thermal fields and the resulting motions are studied; flow induced by an external temperature gradient and spontaneous thermocapillary motion. For the first flow type, it was found that, in general, the motion is induced in the direction of the temperature gradient. However, under certain physical conditions and drops' configuration a motion against the temperature gradient may be observed. In the second case, spontaneous thermocapillary motion, the compound drop moves due to surface tension gradients which result from the geometric non-uniformity of the system. Results are presented for several parameters such as configuration of the compound drop, viscosity, thermal conductivity ratio, the dependence of the various interfacial tensions on temperature and the volume ratio of the phases within the drop.

The changes in discharge in pressure-driven flows through channels with longitudinal grooves have been investigated in the laminar flow regime and in the turbulent flow regime with moderate Reynolds numbers ($Re_{2H}\approx 6000$) using both analytical and numerical methodologies. The results demonstrate that the long-wavelength grooves can increase discharge by 20 %–150 %, depending on the groove amplitude and the type of flow, while the short-wavelength grooves reduce the discharge. It has been shown that the reduced geometry model applies to the analysis of turbulent flows and the performance of grooves of arbitrary form is well approximated by the performance of grooves whose shape is represented by the dominant Fourier mode. The flow patterns, the turbulent kinetic energy as well as the Reynolds stresses were examined to identify the mechanisms leading to an increase in discharge. It is shown that the increase in discharge results from the rearrangement of the bulk fluid movement and not from the suppression of turbulence intensity. The turbulent kinetic energy and the Reynolds stresses are rearranged while their volume-averaged intensities remain the same as in the smooth channel. Analysis of the interaction of the groove patterns on both walls demonstrates that the converging–diverging configuration results in the greatest increase in discharge while the wavy channel configuration results in a reduction in discharge.

Recent experiments have revealed the existence of very long streamwise features, denoted as very-large-scale motions (VLSMs), in the thermally neutral atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) (Hutchins et al., Boundary-Layer Meteorol., vol. 145(2), 2012, pp. 273–306). The aim of our study is to elaborate the role of these large-scale anisotropic patterns in wind-energy harvesting with special emphasis on the organization of turbulent fields around wind turbines. To this end, we perform large-eddy simulation (LES) of a turbine row operating under neutral conditions. The ABL data are produced separately in a very long domain of $240\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$ is the ABL thickness, to ensure a realistic representation for very large scales of $O(10\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$. VLSMs are extracted from the LES database using a cutoff at streamwise wavelength $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{x}=5\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$, or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{x}=50D$ in terms of turbine diameter. Reynolds averaging of low-pass filtered fields shows that the interaction of VLSMs and turbines produce very-long-wavelength motions in the wake region, which contain approximately $20\,\%$ of the resolved Reynolds shear stress, and $30\,\%$ of the resolved streamwise kinetic energy in the shear layers. To further elucidate these statistics, we conduct a geometrical analysis using conditional averaging based on large-scale low- and high-velocity events. The conditional eddies provide evidence for very long (${\sim}10\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) and wide (${\sim}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) streak–roller structures around the turbine row. Although all of these eddies share the same streak–roller topology, there are remarkable modifications in the morphology of the conditional eddies whose cores are located sideways to the turbines. In these cases, the turbine row pushes the whole low- or high-momentum streak aside, and prevails as a sharp boundary to the low–high-momentum streak pair. In this process, accompanying rollers remain relatively unaffected. This creates a two-way flux towards the turbine row. These observations provide some insights about the high lateral spreading observed in the large-scale Reynolds stress fields.

This work is a parametric study of the fluxes of heat and salt across unsheared and sheared double-diffusive interfaces using one-dimensional-turbulence (ODT) simulations. It is motivated by the need to understand how these fluxes scale with parameters related to the fluid molecular properties and background shear. Comparisons are made throughout with previous models and available measurements. In unsheared interfaces, ODT simulations show that the dimensionless heat flux Nu scales with the stability parameter Rρ, Rayleigh number Ra and Prandtl number Pr as Nu ~ (Ra/Rρ)0.37±0.03 when Pr varies from 3 to 100 and as Nu ~ (Ra/Rρ)0.31Pr0.22±0.04 when Pr varies from 0.01 to 1. Here Ra/Rρ can be seen as the ratio of destabilizing and stabilizing effects. The simulation results also indicate that the ratio of salt and heat fluxes Rf is independent of Pr, scales with the Lewis number Le as Rf ~ Le0.41±0.04 when Rρ is large enough and deviates from this expression for low values of Rρ, when the interface becomes heavily eroded. In sheared interfaces, the simulations show three flow regimes. When the Richardson number Ri ≪ 1, shear-induced mixing dominates, the heat flux scales with the horizontal velocity difference across the interface and Rf = Rρ. Near Ri ~ 1 the heat and salt fluxes are seen to increase abruptly as the shear increases. The flow structure and scaling of the fluxes are similar to those of unsheared interfaces when Ri ≫ 1.
