We have studied steady flow in a two-dimensional channel in which a section of one wall has been replaced by an elastic membrane under dimensionless longitudinal tension $T$ but possessing no bending stiffness. The dimensionless upstream transmural pressure takes a value $P_{\hbox{\it\scriptsize ext}}$, the membrane section is assumed to be long compared with the channel width and its deformation is assumed to remain within the viscous boundary layers. Standard high-Reynolds-number asymptotic methods are applied to arrive at a coupled boundary-layer-membrane problem. A non-zero cross-stream pressure gradient, leading to flow perturbations upstream of the membrane, is included in the analysis.

Linearization of the boundary-layer problem yields firstly an analytic solution at non-zero $P_{\hbox{\it\scriptsize ext}}$ and asymptotically high $T$. This takes the form of an expansion in $T^{-1}$ for which the membrane shape and the flow decouple at each order. Extension of this solution branch to smaller values of the tension suggests a singularity at finite tension, where the deformation of the membrane becomes very large. Secondly, when the upstream transmural pressure is zero the trivial solution is valid for all values of the tension. However, we also obtain eigensolutions where the membrane tension plays the role of eigenvalue. There are thus non-trivial solutions of the problem at these particular values of the tension.

The nonlinear coupled boundary-layer–membrane problem is then solved numerically. A finite-difference, Keller-box, marching scheme is used, together with a shooting algorithm to satisfy the boundary condition at the downstream end of the membrane. This reveals a variety of different solutions, showing the relation between the two cases captured by the linearized analysis and demonstrating the existence of parameter ranges for which no solutions exist under the specified constraints. Such parameter ranges appear not to exist if the downstream, rather than the upstream, transmural pressure is held constant.

The relation to our results of solutions obtained by solving the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations directly is discussed. Reasonable agreement between parameters is obtained, once allowance is made for the finite Reynolds number and membrane length in those computations.

Three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry is applied to particle-laden turbulent pipe flows at a Reynolds number of 10 300, based on the bulk velocity and the pipe diameter, for developed fluid flow and not fully developed flow of inertial particles, which favours assessment of the radial migration of the inertial particles. Inertial particles with Stokes number ranging from 0.35 to 1.11, based on the particle relaxation time and the radial-dependent Kolmogorov time scale, and a ratio of the root-mean-square fluid velocity to the terminal velocity of order 1 have been used. Core peaking of the concentration of inertial particles in up-flow and wall peaking in down-flow have been found. The difference in mean particle and Eulerian mean liquid velocity is found to decrease to approximately zero near the wall in both flow directions. Although the carrier fluid has all of the characteristics of the corresponding turbulent single-phase flow, the Reynolds stress of the inertial particles is different near the wall in up-flow. These findings are explained from the preferential location of the inertial particles with the aid of direct numerical simulations with the point-particle approach.

Steady methane/air laminar premixed flames stabilised on a cylindrical bluff body subjected to a continuous rotation are analysed using joint direct numerical simulations (DNS) and experiments. DNS are carried out using a 19 species scheme for methane/air combustion and a lumped model to predict the cylinder temperature. Rotation of the cylinder induces a symmetry breaking of the flow, and leads to two distinct flame branches in the wake of the cylinder. DNS are validated against experiments in terms of flame topologies and velocity fields. DNS are then used to analyse flame structures and thermal effects. The location and structure of the two flames are differently modified by rotation and heat transfer: a superadiabatic flame branch stabilises close to the hot cylinder and burns preheated fresh gases while a subadiabatic branch is quenched over a large zone and anchors far downstream of the cylinder. Local flame structures are shown to be controlled to first order by the local enthalpy defect or excess due to heat transfer between the cylinder and the flow. An analysis of the local wall heat flux around the cylinder shows that, for low rotation speeds, the superadiabatic flame branch contributes to wall heat fluxes that considerably exceed typical values found for classical flame/wall interactions. However, for high rotation speeds, fluxes decrease because the cylinder is surrounded by a layer of burned gases that dilute incoming reactants and shield it from the flame.

This paper examines changes in the mean velocity profiles of turbulent boundary layers subjected to system rotation. Analysis of the data from several studies conducted in the large rotating wind tunnel at the University of Melbourne shows the existence of a universal linear correction to the velocity profile in the logarithmic region. The appropriate parameters relevant to rotation are derived and correlations are found between the parameters. Flows with adverse pressure gradients, zero pressure gradients and secondary flows are examined and all appear to exhibit the universal linear correction, suggesting that it is robust.

It is a new concept for porous media flow that a hydrodynamic lifting force is generated inside a highly compressible porous layer as a planing surface glides over it. The concept originated from the observation of the pop-out phenomena of red blood cells over the endothelial glycocalyx layer (EGL) lining the inner surface of our blood vessels (Feng & Weinbaum, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 422, 2000, pp. 282–317). In the current paper, we report an experimental study to examine this concept. A novel testing set-up was developed that consists of a running conveyer belt covered with a soft porous sheet, and a fully instrumented upper planar board, i.e. planing surface. The generation of pore pressure was observed and captured by pressure transducers when the planing surface glides over the porous sheet. Its distribution strongly depends on the relative velocity between the planing surface and the running belt, the mechanical and transport properties of the porous sheet as well as the compression ratios at the leading and trailing edges. The relative contribution of the transiently trapped air to the total lift was evaluated by comparing the pore pressure to the total lifting pressure measured by a load cell mounted between two adjacent pressure transducers. For a typical running condition with a polyester porous material ($k=h_{2}/h_{1}=5$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=h_{2}/h_{0}=1$, $U=3.8~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$, where $h_{2}$, $h_{1}$, are the porous layer thickness at the leading and trailing edges, respectively; $h_{0}$ is the un-deformed porous layer thickness; and $U$ is the velocity of the running belt), over 68 % of the local lift is generated by the pore pressure. The results conclusively verified the validity of lift generation in a highly compressible porous layer as a planing surface glides over it. This study provides the foundation for the application of highly compressible porous media for soft lubrication with minimal frictional losses. It also sheds some light on the biophysics study of the EGL.

A theory to explain the initial stages of unsteady separation has been proposed by Van Dommelen & Cowiey (1990). In the present paper, this theory is verified for the separation process that occurs at the equatorial plane of a sphere or a spheroid which is impulsively spun around an axis of symmetry. A Lagrangian numerical scheme is developed which gives results in good agreement with Eulerian computations, but which is significantly more accurate. This increased accuracy, and a simpler structure to the solution, also allows verification of the Eulerian structure, including the presence of logarithmic terms. Further, while the Eulerian computations broke down at the first occurrence of separation, it is found that the Lagrangian computation can be continued. It is argued that this separated solution does provide useful insight into the further evolution of the separated flow. A remarkable conclusion is that an unseparated vorticity layer at the wall, a familiar feature in unsteady separation processes, disappears in finite time.

A short-wave asymptotic analysis is undertaken for problems concerned with the radiation and scattering of surface waves by a cylinder whose cross-section S intersects the free surface normally. It is assumed that S is locally smooth and convex at the two intersection points with the fluid, which may be of infinite or finite depth. For both the scattering and radiation problem, a matched expansion technique is used to provide asymptotic estimates, in terms of relatively simple wave-free limit potentials, for the amplitudes of the surface wave trains that propagate from S. Explicit details are given for some particular geometries, confirming and extending earlier results. The method can, in principle, be extended to deal with other geometries.

The flow field around pairs of small particles moving and rotating in a shear flow close to a wall at low but finite Reynolds number (Re) is computed as a function of time by means of the lattice-Boltzmann technique. The total force and torque acting on each particle is computed at each time step and the position of the particles is updated. By considering the lift force and the disturbances induced by the particles, the trajectories of the pair of particles are explained as a function of the distances from the wall and the Reynolds number. It is shown that when particles are positioned in a particular form, they collide forming strings. In particular, we are interested in particle-bridge formation in shear flows, and two collided particles (a string) can be considered as a nucleus of a particle bridge.

The lift on a solid sphere moving along a wall in a parabolic shear flow is obtained as a regular perturbation problem for low Reynolds number when the sphere is in the inner region of expansion. Comprehensive results are given for the 10 terms of the lift, which involve the sphere translation and rotation, the linear and quadratic parts of the shear flow and all binary couplings. Based on very accurate earlier results of a creeping flow in bispherical coordinates, precise results for these lift terms are obtained for a large range of sphere-to-wall distances, including the lubrication region for sphere-to-wall gaps down to 0.01 of a sphere radius. Fitting formulae are also provided in view of applications. The migration velocity of an inertialess spherical particle is given explicitly, for a non-rotating sphere with a prescribed translation velocity and for a freely moving sphere in a parabolic shear flow. Values of the lift and migration velocity are in good agreement with earlier results whenever available.

In this paper, a multi-layer model is developed for the purpose of studying nonlinear internal wave propagation in shallow water. The methodology employed in constructing the multi-layer model is similar to that used in deriving Boussinesq-type equations for surface gravity waves. It can also be viewed as an extension of the two-layer model developed by Choi & Camassa. The multi-layer model approximates the continuous density stratification by an -layer fluid system in which a constant density is assumed in each layer. This allows the model to investigate higher-mode internal waves. Furthermore, the model is capable of simulating large-amplitude internal waves up to the breaking point. However, the model is limited by the assumption that the total water depth is shallow in comparison with the wavelength of interest. Furthermore, the vertical vorticity must vanish, while the horizontal vorticity components are weak. Numerical examples for strongly nonlinear waves are compared with laboratory data and other numerical studies in a two-layer fluid system. Good agreement is observed. The generation and propagation of mode-1 and mode-2 internal waves and their interactions with bottom topography are also investigated.

Clarifying the mechanism of particle removal by megasonic cleaning and multiple-bubble dynamics in megasonic fields is essential for removing contaminant particles during nanodevice cleaning without pattern damage. In particular, the effect of the interaction of multiple bubbles on bubble-collapse behaviour and impulsive pressure induced by bubble collapse should also be discussed. In this study, a compressible locally homogeneous model of a gas–liquid two-phase medium is used to numerically analyse the multiple-bubble behaviour in a megasonic field. The numerical results indicate that, for bubbles with the same equilibrium radius, the natural frequency of the bubble decreases, and bubbles with smaller equilibrium radii resonate with the megasonic wave as the number of bubbles increases. Therefore, the equilibrium radius of bubbles showing maximum wall pressure decreases with an increasing number of bubbles. The increase in bubble number also results in chain collapse, inducing high wall pressure. The effect of the configuration of bubbles is discussed, and the bubble–bubble interaction in the concentric distribution makes a greater contribution to the decrease in the natural frequency of bubbles than the interaction in the straight distribution.

Quantitative mathematical models describe planar, spontaneous, reaction wave propagation (Zeldovich, Combust. Flame, vol. 39, 1980, pp. 211–214) in a finite hot spot volume of reactive gas. The results describe the complete thermomechanical response of the gas to a one-step, high-activation-energy exothermic reaction initiated by a tiny initial temperature non-uniformity in a gas at rest with uniform pressure. Initially, the complete conservation equations, including all transport terms, are non-dimensionalized to identify parameters that quantify the impact of viscosity, conduction and diffusion. The results demonstrate unequivocally that transport terms are tiny relative to all other terms in the equations, given the relevant time and length scales. The asymptotic analyses, based on the reactive Euler equations, describe both induction and post-induction period models for a fast heat release rate (induction time scale short compared to the acoustic time of the spot), as well as a modest heat release rate (induction time scale equivalent to the acoustic time). Analytical results are obtained for the fast heating rate problem and emphasize the physics of near constant-volume heating during the induction period. Weak hot spot expansion is the source of fluid expelled from the original finite volume and is a ‘piston-effect’ source of acoustic mechanical disturbances beyond the spot. The post-induction period is characterized by the explosive appearance of an ephemeral, spatially uniform high-temperature, high-pressure spot embedded in a cold, low-pressure environment. In analogy with a shock tube the subsequent expansion process occurs on the acoustic time scale of the spot and will be the source of shocks propagating beyond the spot. The modest heating rate induction period is characterized by weakly compressible phenomena that can be described by a novel system of linear wave equations for the temperature, pressure and induced velocity perturbations driven by nonlinear chemical heating, which provides physical insights difficult to obtain from the more familiar ‘Clarke equation’. When the heating rate is modest, reaction terms in the post-induction period Euler equations exhibit a form of singular behaviour in the high-activation-energy limit, implying the need to use a nonlinear exponential scaling for time and space, developed originally to describe spatially uniform thermal explosions (Kassoy, Q. J. Mech. Appl. Maths, vol. 30, 1977, pp. 71–89). Here again the result will be the explosive appearance of an ephemeral spatially uniform high-temperature, high-pressure hot spot. These results demonstrate that an initially weak temperature non-uniformity in a finite hot spot can be the source of acoustic and shock wave mechanical disturbances in the gas beyond the spot that may be related to rocket engine instability and engine knock.

The unsteady laminar flow from a point source of momentum is considered. Dimensional considerations lead to a formulation of the problem which is self-similar in time. Three limiting cases are examined. In the limit t → ∞ the solution corresponds to the classic steady solution first discovered by Landau (1944). The limit t → 0 was examined recently by Sozou & Pickering (1977) and was shown to correspond to the flow from an unsteady dipole of linearly increasing strength. More recently Sozou (1979) determined an analytic solution for the creeping flow limit Re → 0. In the present work, unsteady particle trajectories for each of these cases are examined by reducing the particle path equations to an autonomous system with the Reynolds number as a parameter. Transition of the jet is examined as a bifurcation of this system. In the case of the creeping-flow solution, the particle-path pattern exhibits a structure which is not easily discerned in any of the other variables which govern the flow. For sufficiently small Reynolds number the particle paths converge to a single stable node which lies on the axis of the jet. At a Reynolds number of 6·7806 the pattern bifurcates to a saddle lying on the axis of the jet plus two stable nodes lying symmetrically to either side of the axis. At a Reynolds number of 10·09089 the pattern bifurcates a second time to form a saddle and two stable foci.

The motion of a slender body near a flat interface between two immiscible fluids of different viscosities and densities is considered. The force distributions along a slender body are derived for the two cases when the instantaneous motion of the slender body is parallel to, and normal to, the interface. In some cases the slender body will rotate, the magnitude and direction of rotation being a function of the ratio of the two viscosities and the distance from the interface. For a narrow band of viscosity ratios the direction of rotation for a normally oriented slender body will change with distance from the interface. Two mechanisms for the interface-induced rotation are discussed.
