Recent studies have demonstrated that large secondary motions are excited by surface roughness with dominant spanwise length scales of the order of the flow's outer length scale. Inspired by this, we explore the effect of spanwise heterogeneous surface temperature in weakly to strongly stratified closed channel flow (at $Ri_\tau =120$, 960; $Re_\tau = 180$, 550) with direct numerical simulations. The configuration consists of equally sized strips of high and low temperature at the lower and upper boundaries, while an overall stable stratification is induced by imposing an average temperature difference between the top and bottom. We consider the influence of the width of the strips (${\rm \pi} /8 \leq \lambda /h \leq 4{\rm \pi} $), Reynolds number, stability and upper boundary condition on the mean flow structure, skin friction and heat transfer. Results indicate that secondary flows are excited, with alternating high- and low-momentum pathways and vortices, similar to the patterns induced by spanwise heterogeneous surface roughness. We find that the impact of the surface heterogeneity on the outer layer depends strongly on the spanwise heterogeneity length scale of the surface temperature. Comparison to stable channel flow with uniform temperature reveals that the heterogeneous surface temperature increases the global friction coefficient and reduces the global Nusselt number in most cases. However, for the high-Reynolds cases with $\lambda /h \geq {\rm \pi} /2$, we find a reduction of the friction coefficient. At stronger stability, the vertical extent of the vortices is reduced and the impact of the heterogeneous temperature on momentum and heat transfer is smaller.

In this paper, we numerically study the wave turbulence of surface gravity waves in the framework of Euler equations of the free surface. The purpose is to understand the variation of the scaling of the spectra with wavenumber $k$ and energy flux $P$ at different nonlinearity levels under different forcing/free-decay conditions. For all conditions (free decay and narrow-band and broad-band forcing) that we consider, we find that the spectral forms approach the wave turbulence theory (WTT) solution $S_\eta \sim k^{-5/2}$ and $S_\eta \sim P^{1/3}$ at high nonlinearity levels. With a decrease of nonlinearity level, the spectra for all cases become steeper, with the narrow-band forcing case exhibiting the most rapid deviation from WTT. We investigate bound waves and the finite-size effect as possible mechanisms causing the spectral variations. Through a tri-coherence analysis, we find that the finite-size effect is present in all cases, which is responsible for the overall steepening of the spectra and the reduced capacity of energy flux at lower nonlinearity levels. The fraction of bound waves in the domain generally decreases with the decrease of nonlinearity level, except for the narrow-band case, which exhibits a transition at a critical nonlinearity level below which a rapid increase is observed. This increase serves as the main reason for the fastest deviation from WTT with the decrease of nonlinearity in the narrow-band forcing case.

In this work, a semianalytic solution for the acoustic streaming phenomenon, generated by standing waves in Maxwell fluids through a two-dimensional microchannel (resonator), is derived. The mathematical model is non-dimensionalized and several dimensionless parameters that characterize the phenomenon arise: the ratio between the oscillation amplitude of the resonator and the half-wavelength ($\eta =2A/\lambda _{a}$); the product of the fluid relaxation time times the angular frequency known as the Deborah number ($De=\lambda _{1}\omega$); the aspect ratio between the microchannel height and the wavelength ($\epsilon =2 H_{0}/\lambda _{a}$); and the ratio between half the height of the microchannel and the thickness of the viscous boundary layer ($\alpha =H_{0}/\delta _{\nu }$). In the limit when $\eta \ll 1$, we obtain the hydrodynamic behaviour of the system using a regular perturbation method. In the present work, we show that the acoustic streaming speed is proportional to $\alpha ^{2.65}De^{1.9}$, and the acoustic pressure varies as $\alpha ^{6/5}De^{1/2}$. Also, we have found that the growth of inner vortex is due to convective terms in the Maxwell rheological equation. Furthermore, the velocity antinodes show a high dependency on the Deborah number, highlighting the fluid's viscoelastic properties and the appearance of resonance points. Due to the limitations of perturbation methods, we will only analyse narrow microchannels.

Following Fjørtoft (Tellus, vol. 5, 1953, pp. 225–230) we undertake a spectral analysis of a non-divergent flow on a sphere. It is shown that the spherical harmonic energy spectrum is invariant under rotations of the polar axis of the spherical harmonic system and argued that a constraint of isotropy would not simplify the analysis but only exclude low-order modes. The spectral energy equation is derived and it is shown that the viscous term has a slightly different form than given in previous studies. The relations involving energy transfer within a triad of modes, which Fjørtoft (Tellus, vol. 5, 1953, pp. 225–230) derived under the condition that energy transfer is restricted to three modes, are derived under general conditions. These relations show that there are two types of interaction within a triad. The first type is where the middle mode acts as a source for the two other modes and the second type is where it acts as a sink. The inequality indicating cascade directions which was derived by Gkioulekas & Tung (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 576, 2007, pp. 173–189) in Fourier space under the assumptions of narrow band forcing and stationarity is derived in spherical harmonic space under the assumption of dominance of first type interactions. The double cascade theory of Kraichnan (Phys. Fluids, vol. 10, 1967, pp. 1417–1423) is discussed in the light of the derived equations and it is hypothesised that in flows with limited scale separation the two cascades may, to a large extent, be produced by the same triad interactions. Finally, we conclude that the spherical geometry is the optimal test ground for exploration of two-dimensional turbulence by means of simulations.
