The parallel expansion of a dense, pellet-produced plasmoid is modelled with parameters relevant to pellet fuelling experiments in the Wendelstein7-X stellarator. Good agreement is found between the analytical theory and more detailed modelling. In particular, much of the energy deposited in the pellet by the ambient plasma is transferred to the pellet ions by the ambipolar electric field during the expansion. The validity of the hydrodynamic treatment of the plasmoid and the ambient plasma is discussed.

The tertiary instability is believed to be important for governing magnetised plasma turbulence under conditions of strong zonal flow generation, near marginal stability. In this work, we investigate its role for a collisionless strongly driven fluid model, self-consistently derived as a limit of gyrokinetics. It is found that a region of absolute stability above the linear threshold exists, beyond which significant nonlinear transport rapidly develops. Characteristically, this range exhibits a complex pattern of transient zonal evolution before a stable profile can arise. Nevertheless, the Dimits transition itself is found to coincide with a tertiary instability threshold, so long as linear effects are included. Through a simple and readily extendable procedure, tracing its origin to St-Onge (J. Plasma Phys., vol. 83, issue 05, 2017, 905830504), the stabilising effect of the typical zonal profile can be approximated, and the accompanying reduced mode estimate is found to be in good agreement with nonlinear simulations.

Explanations for the long lifetime of spherically symmetric objects in nature and the short lifetime of laboratory plasma are given. A qualitative description of the relativistic model of ball lightning is also given, which is a spherical electric region with strong electric and magnetic fields. The plasma temperature in the zone of the ball-lightning generation is measured by the spectroscopic method. A large ball lightning, the maximum diameter of which is equal to one meter and which stands in the region of its generation, is also registered after the formation and departure of a high-energy ball lightning. The reason for the low emissive power in the optical range characteristic for the atmospheric ball lightning is explained by the absence of electron transitions in the outer proton-containing shell. The absence of electrical breakdown at ultrahigh electric field between the core and the outer shell of the ball lightning and its destruction at the moment when the resulting force becomes nonzero are also explained.

Lane formation dynamics in externally driven pair-ion plasma (PIP) particles is studied in the presence of external magnetic field using Langevin dynamics (LD) simulation. The phase diagram obtained distinguishing the no-lane and lane states is systematically determined from a study of various Coulomb coupling parameter values. A peculiar lane formation-disintegration parameter space is identified; lane formation area extended to a wide range of Coulomb coupling parameter values is observed before disappearing to a mixed phase. The different phases are identified by calculating the order parameter. This and the critical parameters are calculated directly from LD simulation. The critical electric field strength value above which the lanes are formed distinctly is obtained, and it is observed that in the presence of the external magnetic field, the PIP system requires a higher value of the electric field strength to enter into the lane formation state than that in the absence of the magnetic field. We further find out the critical value of electric field frequency beyond which the system exhibits a transition back to the disordered state and this critical frequency is found as an increasing function of the electric field strength in the presence of an external magnetic field. The movement of the lanes is also observed in a direction perpendicular to that of the applied electric and magnetic field directions, which reveals the existence of the electric field drift in the system under study. We also use an oblique force field as the external driving force, both in the presence and absence of the external magnetic field. The application of this oblique force changes the orientation of the lane structures for different applied oblique angle values.

Between the base of the solar corona at $r=r_\textrm {b}$ and the Alfvén critical point at $r=r_\textrm {A}$, where $r$ is heliocentric distance, the solar-wind density decreases by a factor $ \mathop > \limits_\sim 10^5$, but the plasma temperature varies by a factor of only a few. In this paper, I show that such quasi-isothermal evolution out to $r=r_\textrm {A}$ is a generic property of outflows powered by reflection-driven Alfvén-wave (AW) turbulence, in which outward-propagating AWs partially reflect, and counter-propagating AWs interact to produce a cascade of fluctuation energy to small scales, which leads to turbulent heating. Approximating the sub-Alfvénic region as isothermal, I first present a brief, simplified calculation showing that in a solar or stellar wind powered by AW turbulence with minimal conductive losses, $\dot {M} \simeq P_\textrm {AW}(r_\textrm {b})/v_\textrm {esc}^2$, $U_{\infty } \simeq v_\textrm {esc}$, and $T\simeq m_\textrm {p} v_\textrm {esc}^2/[8 k_\textrm {B} \ln (v_\textrm {esc}/\delta v_\textrm {b})]$, where $\dot {M}$ is the mass outflow rate, $U_{\infty }$ is the asymptotic wind speed, $T$ is the coronal temperature, $v_\textrm {esc}$ is the escape velocity of the Sun, $\delta v_\textrm {b}$ is the fluctuating velocity at $r_\textrm {b}$, $P_\textrm {AW}$ is the power carried by outward-propagating AWs, $k_\textrm {B}$ is the Boltzmann constant, and $m_\textrm {p}$ is the proton mass. I then develop a more detailed model of the transition region, corona, and solar wind that accounts for the heat flux $q_\textrm {b}$ from the coronal base into the transition region and momentum deposition by AWs. I solve analytically for $q_\textrm {b}$ by balancing conductive heating against internal-energy losses from radiation, $p\,\textrm {d} V$ work, and advection within the transition region. The density at $r_\textrm {b}$ is determined by balancing turbulent heating and radiative cooling at $r_\textrm {b}$. I solve the equations of the model analytically in two different parameter regimes. In one of these regimes, the leading-order analytic solution reproduces the results of the aforementioned simplified calculation of $\dot {M}$, $U_\infty$, and $T$. Analytic and numerical solutions to the model equations match a number of observations.

In this work we study the undesired effects of electron density fluctuations (in the form of blob structures which may exist in the edge region of tokamak plasmas) to the electron-cyclotron wave propagation and current drive in connection to the efficiency of neoclassical tearing mode stabilization. Our model involves the evaluation of the driven current in the presence of density perturbations, by using a combination of a wave solver based on the transfer matrix and electromagnetic homogenization methods for the propagation part prior to and inside the region of these structures (where standard asymptotic propagation methods may not be valid due to the short-wavelength limit breakdown), with a ray tracing code including island geometry effects and current drive computation for the propagation past the perturbed region. The computed driven current is input into the modified Rutherford equation in order to estimate the consequences of the wave deformation (driven by the density fluctuations) to the mode stabilization.

Type III radio bursts are radio emissions associated with solar flares. They are considered to be caused by electron beams travelling from the solar corona to the solar wind. Magnetic reconnection is a possible accelerator of electron beams in the course of solar flares since it causes unstable distribution functions and density inhomogeneities (cavities). The properties of radio emission by electron beams in an inhomogeneous environment are still poorly understood. We capture the nonlinear kinetic plasma processes of the generation of beam-related radio emissions in inhomogeneous plasmas by utilizing fully kinetic particle-in-cell code numerical simulations. Our model takes into account initial electron velocity distribution functions (EVDFs) as they are supposed to be created by magnetic reconnection. We focus our analysis on low-density regions with strong magnetic fields. The assumed EVDFs allow two distinct mechanisms of radio wave emissions: plasma emission due to wave–wave interactions and so-called electron cyclotron maser emission (ECME) due to direct wave–particle interactions. We investigate the effects of density inhomogeneities on the conversion of free energy from the electron beams into the energy of electrostatic and electromagnetic waves via plasma emission and ECME, as well as the frequency shift of electron resonances caused by perpendicular gradients in the beam EVDFs. Our most important finding is that the number of harmonics of Langmuir waves increases due to the presence of density inhomogeneities. The additional harmonics of Langmuir waves are generated by a coalescence of beam-generated Langmuir waves and their harmonics.

Recently, the energization of superthermal electrons at the Earth's bow shock was found to be consistent with a new magnetic pumping model derived in the limit where the electron transit time is much shorter than any time scale governing the evolution of the magnetic fields. The new model breaks with the common approach of integrating the kinetic equations along unperturbed orbits. Rather, the fast transit-time limit allows the electron dynamics to be characterized by adiabatic invariants (action variables) accurately capturing the nonlinear effects of electrons becoming trapped in magnetic perturbations. Without trapping, fast parallel streaming along magnetic field lines causes the electron pressure to be isotropized and homogeneous along the magnetic field lines. In contrast, trapping permits spatially varying pressure anisotropy to form along the magnetic field lines, and through a Fermi process this pressure anisotropy in turn becomes the main ingredient that renders magnetic pumping efficient for energizing superthermal electrons. We here present a detailed mathematical derivation of the model.

Part 1 described a wide range of analytic tokamak equilibria modelling smooth limiter surfaces, double- and single-null divertor surfaces, arbitrary aspect ratio, elongation, triangularity and beta. Part 2 generalizes the analysis to further include edge pedestals and toroidal flow. Specifically, edge pedestals are allowed in the pressure, pressure gradient and toroidal current density. Also, an edge-localized contribution to the bootstrap current is treated. In terms of flow, analytic solutions are obtained for two cases: a $\gamma = 2$ adiabatic and a $\gamma = \infty $ incompressible energy conservation relation.

The mechanism of harmonic generation in both O- and X-mode configurations for a magnetized plasma has been explored here in detail with the help of particle-in-cell simulations. A detailed characterization of both the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic radiation propagating in the bulk of the plasma has been carried out for this purpose. The efficiency of harmonic generation is shown to increase with the incident laser intensity. A dependency of harmonic efficiency has also been found on magnetic field strength. This work demonstrates that there is an optimum value of the magnetic field at which the efficiency of harmonic generation maximizes. The observations are in agreement with theoretical analysis. For the O-mode configuration, this is compelling as the harmonic generation provides for a mechanism by which laser energy can propagate inside an overdense plasma region.

We derive the local dispersion relation of energetic-particle-induced geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) for both trapped and circulating ion beams with single pitch angle slowing-down and Maxwellian distributions, as well as a bump-on-tail distribution in tokamak plasmas. For slowing-down and Maxwellian particles, the solutions of the local dispersion relation give the spectrum, growth rate and thresholds of excitation as functions of the pitch angle, beam density and frequency of the energetic particles bounce motion. For circulating ions there is only one unstable branch with frequency below the GAM continuum and a threshold of excitation in the pitch angle, for both the slowing-down and single pitch Maxwellian distributions. Trapped particles cause no excitation of a mode for neither slowing-down nor Maxwellian ion beams, but they can excite a mode with a bump-on-tail distribution when the mean velocity of the beam is larger than the threshold and the energetic particle bounce frequency is high enough.

In this article, the electron trapping and acceleration in the wake field driven by an ultrarelativistic hollow electron beam is studied. When the hollow driver injects into plasma, there is a doughnut-shaped electron bubble formed because of the existence of a special ‘backflow’ beam in the centre of the electron bubble. At the same time, there is a transverse convergence of the hollow driver, which leads to the weakening of the backflow beam. This results in a local electron density transition at the rear of the bubble. During this process, there is an expansion of the longitudinal electron bubble size, and a bunch of background electrons is trapped by the wake field at the rear of the bubble. The tracks for the trapped electrons show that there are two sources: one is from the bubble sheath and the other is from the unique backflow beam. In the particle-in-cell simulation where the driving beam has initial energy of $1.0$ GeV per particle, the trapped beam can be accelerated to energy of more than $1.5$ GeV per particle and the corresponding transformer ratio is $1.5$. With the increase of driving beam energy up to $40.0$ GeV, a transformer ratio of $1.4$ still can be achieved. By adjusting the hollow beam density, it is possible to control the trapped beam charge value and beam quality, such as its energy spread and transverse emittance.

The interaction of radio-frequency (RF) waves with edge turbulence modifies the incident wave spectrum, and can significantly affect RF heating and current drive in tokamaks. Previous lower hybrid (LH) scattering models have either used the weak-turbulence approximation, or treated more realistic, filamentary turbulence in the ray tracing limit. In this work, a new model is introduced which retains full-wave effects of RF scattering in filamentary turbulence. First, a Mie-scattering technique models the interaction of an incident wave with a single Gaussian filament. Next, an effective differential scattering width is derived for a statistical ensemble of filaments. Lastly, a Markov chain solves for the transmitted wave spectrum in slab geometry. This model is applied to LH launching for current drive. The resulting wave spectrum is asymmetrically broadened in angular wavenumber space. This asymmetry is not accounted for in previous LH scattering models. The modified wave spectrum is coupled to a ray tracing/Fokker–Planck solver (GENRAY/CQL3D) to study its impact on current drive. The resulting current profile is greatly altered, and there is significant increase in the on-axis current and decrease in the off-axis peaks. This is attributed to a portion of the modified wave spectrum that is strongly dampened on-axis during the first pass.

Thermal effects on the properties of four electromagnetic waves propagating in the pulsar magnetosphere are analysed. It is shown that thermal effects change only quantitatively the dispersion properties of superluminal ordinary O-mode freely escaping the pulsar magnetosphere; whereas properties of the extraordinary X-mode remain unchanged. The research shows that for two subluminal waves propagating along magnetic field lines thermal effects result in essential absorption. However, this attenuation occurs at considerable distances from the neutron star, and there is no doubt of their existence.

In order to predict and analyse turbulent transport in tokamaks, it is important to model transport that arises from microinstabilities. For this task, quasilinear codes have been developed that seek to calculate particle, angular momentum and heat fluxes, both quickly and accurately. In this tutorial, we present a derivation of one such code known as QuaLiKiz, a quasilinear gyrokinetic transport code. The goal of this derivation is to provide a self-contained and complete description of the underlying physics and mathematics of QuaLiKiz from first principles. This work serves both as a comprehensive overview of QuaLiKiz specifically as well as an illustration for deriving quasilinear models in general.

A three-dimensional fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation strategy has been implemented to simulate the acceleration stage of a magnetically enhanced plasma thruster (MEPT). The study has been performed with the open-source code Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software (SPIS). The tool has been copiously modified to simulate properly the dynamics of a magnetized plasma plume. A cross-validation of the methodology has been done with Starfish, a two-dimensional open-source PIC software. Two configurations have been compared: (i) in the absence of a magnetic field and (ii) in the presence of a magnetic field generated by a coil with maximum intensity of 300 G at the thruster outlet. The results show a reduction of the plume divergence angle, an increase of ion speed and an increase of the specific impulse in the presence of the magnetic nozzle. The simulations presented in this study are representative of the operative conditions of a 50 W MEPT. Nonetheless, the methodology adopted can be extended to handle the magnetized plasma plume of several other types of thrusters such as electron cyclotron resonance and applied field magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters.

A first-principles method to calculate the critical temperature gradient for the onset of the ion-temperature-gradient mode (ITG) in linear gyrokinetics is presented. We find that conventional notions of the connection length previously invoked in tokamak research should be revised and replaced by a generalized correlation length to explain this onset in stellarators. Simple numerical experiments and gyrokinetic theory show that localized ‘spikes’ in shear, a hallmark of stellarator geometry, are generally insufficient to constrain the parallel correlation length of the mode. ITG modes that localize within bad drift curvature wells that have a critical gradient set by peak drift curvature are also observed. A case study of near-helical stellarators of increasing field period demonstrates that the critical gradient can indeed be controlled by manipulating the magnetic geometry, but underscores the need for a general framework to evaluate the critical gradient. We conclude that average curvature and global shear set the correlation length of resonant ITG modes near the absolute critical gradient, the physics of which is included through direct solution of the gyrokinetic equation. Our method, which handles the general geometry and is more efficient than conventional gyrokinetic solvers, could be applied to future studies of stellarator ITG turbulence optimization.

While the front of a fluid shock is a few mean-free-paths thick, the front of a collisionless shock can be orders of magnitude thinner. By bridging between a collisional and a collisionless formalism, we assess the transition between these two regimes. We consider non-relativistic, non-magnetized, planar shocks in electron–ion plasmas. In addition, our treatment of the collisionless regime is restricted to high-Mach-number electrostatic shocks. We find that the transition can be parameterized by the upstream plasma parameter $\varLambda$ which measures the coupling of the upstream medium. For $\varLambda \lesssim 1.12$, the upstream is collisional, i.e. strongly coupled, and the strong shock front is about $\mathcal {M}_1 \lambda _{\mathrm {mfp},1}$ thick, where $\lambda _{\mathrm {mfp},1}$ and $\mathcal {M}_1$ are the upstream mean free path and Mach number, respectively. A transition occurs for $\varLambda \sim 1.12$ beyond which the front is $\sim \mathcal {M}_1\lambda _{\mathrm {mfp},1}\ln \varLambda /\varLambda$ thick for $\varLambda \gtrsim 1.12$. Considering that $\varLambda$ can reach billions in astrophysical settings, this allows an understanding of how the front of a collisionless shock can be orders of magnitude smaller than the mean free path, and how physics transitions continuously between these two extremes.

The quantum effects in plasmas can be described by the hydrodynamics containing the continuity and Euler equations. However, novel quantum phenomena are found via the extended set of hydrodynamic equations, where the pressure evolution equation and the pressure flux third-rank tensor evolution equation are included. These give the quantum corrections to the Coulomb interaction. The spectra of the Langmuir waves and the spin-electron acoustic waves are calculated. The application of the pressure evolution equation ensures that the contribution of pressure in the Langmuir wave spectrum is proportional to $(3/5)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$ rather than $(1/3)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$, where $v_{\textrm {Fe}}$ is the Fermi velocity.

Quasi-periodic plasmoid formation at the tip of magnetic streamer structures is observed to occur in experiments on the Big Red Ball as well as in simulations of these experiments performed with the extended magnetohydrodynamics code, NIMROD. This plasmoid formation is found to occur on a characteristic time scale dependent on pressure gradients and magnetic curvature in both experiment and simulation. Single mode, or laminar, plasmoids exist when the pressure gradient is modest, but give way to turbulent plasmoid ejection when the system drive is higher, which produces plasmoids of many sizes. However, a critical pressure gradient is also observed, below which plasmoids are never formed. A simple heuristic model of this plasmoid formation process is presented and suggested to be a consequence of a dynamic loss of equilibrium in the high-$\beta$ region of the helmet streamer. This model is capable of explaining the periodicity of plasmoids observed in the experiment and simulations, and produces plasmoid periods of 90 minutes when applied to two-dimensional models of solar streamers with a height of $3R_\odot$. This is consistent with the location and frequency at which periodic plasma blobs have been observed to form by Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronograph and Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation instruments.
